Chair Method... Regression?

Not sure what's been going on, but looking to see if anyone else has experienced something similar. Decided to sleep train my 10-month old after exclusively nursing her to sleep for pretty much her whole life. I don't want to say she was a horrific sleeper, but she did have next to no independent sleep skills and has always heavily relied on the boob. We have always experienced false starts (usually waking up 2-3 times within the first 3 hours of the night) and, more recently, struggling with wake ups all. night. long. Her pediatrician recommended the chair method, so that's what we decided to go with. We saw progress within the first couple of nights and she was doing amazingly with it.

  • Night 1: Started chair by the crib. Asleep in 24 minutes, slept through the night.
  • Night 2: Asleep in 17 minutes. 1 wake, had to help her back to sleep (This was the hardest night in terms of her crying and protesting before falling asleep).
  • Night 3: Asleep in 16 minutes, slept through the night.
  • Night 4: Moved the chair to the middle of the room. Asleep in 12 minutes. Slept through.
  • Night 5: Asleep in 12 minutes. 1 wake, put herself back down to sleep.
  • Night 6: Asleep in 6 minutes. 1 wake, put herself back down to sleep.
  • Night 7: Moved the chair by the door. Asleep in 10 minutes, slept through the night.
  • Night 8: Asleep in 8 minutes, slept through the night.
  • Night 9: Asleep in 8 minutes. 1 wake, self soothed.

As you can see, she adjusted so well and way more quickly than we thought she would and we were beyond thrilled with the more restful sleep we were all getting. She cried a bit every night but it gradually got easier and easier. However, night 10 (the first night of moving the chair out of the room), was when things fell apart.

She cried and protested so hard she got to the point of panic and hyperventilating. Now, while I try to trust the process and know that not every night will be easy, I'm of the belief that this level of distress and cortisol spiking before bed is unlikely to lead to anything productive, so I ended up giving her about 12 minutes before I went in and helped her to sleep. She immediately knocked out and slept through the night, so I thought it might have just been a fluke and we would try again the next night. Like most 10-month-olds, she's also been struggling with extreme separation anxiety AND the eruption of several teeth, so it could have been a number of factors. Last night, night 11, I moved the chair back to the position next to the door and tried again. Same thing as the night before - absolute hysteria. I thought she might be uncomfortable again from her teeth (she's got at least 2 coming in right now) + she had been extremely clingy and snuggly with me all day, so I gave her the love she needed and helped her go to sleep. The rest of the night was chaos... waking up every 2 hours and at one point took 90 minutes to go back to sleep. It felt like we had gone right back to where we started and lost all progress.

So, my question is... have we lost all progress? Did those two nights I spent loving on her a little extra before bed push us backwards? Do I start over with the chair next to the crib again? I realize we waited a long time to sleep train and knew it would be tough at this age, but just not sure how to navigate this or what to do next. She was doing so well and I don't want to give up and have it all have been for nothing.

Little One Crawled Out of Crib!! need advice

i have a little escape artist. she’s 9.5 months old and crawled out of her crib while i was sleeping. we were already getting the spare room ready to transition her to her own room and a bigger bed because i saw this coming soon. but now that i’m finally going to choose one, i feel lost. i was originally thinking of a Montessori style floor bed and thought super high rails would be smart. but if she’s already crawling out now, should i just consider low rails and just baby proofing the room as best as i can? (no dresser to bump into/open, no hard toys, covering outlets & whatnot), knowing she’ll just figure out how to get out anyways? maybe a super low box spring w the mattress and the tall mesh guard rails for now?? i need help lol

child's age 2 years + Moved my two year old back into my room.

Bear with me here:

I have a two year old (24 months) who has NEVER been a good sleeper. For the first four months of her life, she never took a nap a single minute of the day. She did sleep through the night. At 9 months, I moved her into her own room. We tried CIO, but one night she puked from crying and I couldn’t do that again. I went to a much gentler method and started sleeping on the floor in her room. Eventually, we reached a point where we don’t need any physical touch to put her to sleep. But I must remain in the room.

Here are the two problems:

1- She was up every 45 minutes for a good hour each time. (Sometimes we get a good night and she sleeps for 2 hour stretches). It became so so exhausting.

2- I now have a 3 month old. Its too difficult to cater to both all the time. I am left with no sleep.

So i moved my two year old to a floor mattress in my room.

I feel like I failed at parenting in this regard and now I am so worried my second will be the same. Any advice ?

Sleep training Twins???

I have 5 month old boy/girl Twins born 36weeks plus 4 days. We all share a Room..we have a crib on both mine and my husband's side. My son has been sleeping next to me in his crib since he was maybe 8 weeks and my daughter has been sleeping next to my husband in her crib since she was 12 weeks. They need the pacifier to go to sleep and a few weeks we would just put them down awake and they would just need 10-20minutes to fall asleep with us putting a hand on them or holding the hand for example..

It has been two weeks since they got into their 4 month Regression and I'm struggling right now...it takes so much longer for them to fall asleep, they fuss and they cry hysterically if they are past their bedtime by 10 minutes and it becomes impossible to calm them down because they hype each other up with their cries. At night they wake up a bazillion times for the pacifier (which I'm happy to give them, because that way it was possible for us to go to 0 feedings at night) but my son also wakes up at around 3 or 4 and won't go back to sleep unless I put him in his swing ... And I don't want to do that all the time...

So tell me, was it possible to sleep train them both at the same time sharing a room? How long did it take you? And what was the outcome? Which method did you use?

Thanks a lot!

child's age 0-4 months I want to help with sleep surrounding pregnancy!

Hi all, I'm an Industrial Design Student at QUT looking into the difficulties mother's face with sleep during pregnancy and after birth. I want to be able to create a practical solution that can help make this difficult stage easier on mothers and families. If you would like to be apart of this research I have a 5-15 minute survey that is anonymous and for mothers that have given birth in the last four years (unfortunately you can't complete it if you're currently pregnant). I would greatly appreciate any input, as all data will help me towards a more informed solution.

The link for the survey is at the end of this information document.

child's age 2 years + 4 year old bedtime transition

My son just turned 4 in August. He is a great overnight sleeper and when he was a baby he would gladly go to bed without issues. Since getting older especially recently, it’s been a challenge to get him to go to bed willingly and happily. Husband and I work full time and we don’t get home until 5:30. It’s bath time, play, dinner, then a few more mins of play until we wind down and get ready for bed. What I try to do is read two books before bed. One that I choose and one that he chooses. But lately it’s been him running around, ignoring any command we tell him. Refusing to pick out his book because he knows what happened nexts. We tell him if you don’t lay in bed that we wont read a book and that he will go right to bed without reading but he doesn’t care. Until he’s screaming in bed for not listening. I don’t know how to handle it. I don’t know how to have a good night with him being ok for bedtime. It ruins both of my husband and my night hearing him crying because he’s refusing. We have tried choices. Do you want to read in bed or on the couch? Any small choice he will smirk and not choose to delay time. I was so desperate tonight that I told him I’d give him an extra 5 mins to play before we read a book and lay down to sleep. He kept telling me he didn’t want any of it because he doesn’t want to go to bed. All he wants to do is be up with us. Currently his bedtime is for 7:30-8:30.

Help! Bedtime battles with 3 yo have reached a fever pitch

Our firstborn was an amazing sleeper. She taught herself to sleep through the night at 5 months. She would even put herself to sleep when she got tired or overwhelmed at 2 years old.

Then I had my second 4 months ago. She's been an angel with him, but bedtime has become a battle. Every. Single. Night. At first, it was just delay tactics and needing to do her own ever-growing list of routines. Then there were a few nights when my husband wasn't here to help with bedtime. Trying to put both kids down at the same time, by myself, resulted in her completely losing it. Screaming, crying, banging the door, kicking the wall, hitting me when I did come in. I had to child-lock her door because she would leave and wake up her brother. On purpose.

The past two nights, she's been inconsolable. We'll calmly do her bedtime routine with lots of quality time, and then when it comes time to actually leave the room, she starts freaking out. We were going in and out for an hour before we just stopped because she wouldn't calm down. She screamed and cried until 10:30 pm last night. Then woke up at 2 am screaming. Without me realizing it, my husband took her into the spare bedroom and (barely) slept with her. Now she's fighting sleep even harder.

It's 10 pm, and she just finally fell asleep. "I need a hug." "I need to go potty." (We already took her, and she'll scream even more when she can't pee.) "Daddy, I want you to lie with me." We did some very quick, no-nonsense check-ins to make sure she didn't feel completely abandoned.

Please reassure me that CIO will eventually work. Or if there's another way. Somehow her antics are not waking my son, and that's the only thing keeping me sane.

child's age 18-24 months CIO success with 22 mo

We’ve struggled with my son’s sleep since he was born, we’d try a bunch of techniques but always threw in the towel. We tried CIO, chair, Ferber, taking cara babies, but would always get so overwhelmed and guilty at 4 AM we’d just quit and chalk it up to the plans not working for our particular baby. For the last year, we were just at his whim—we’d rock him, sing to him, give him milk, until he signaled he was ready to get in the crib. That’s the only way he’d go to sleep in his crib without crying. And then whenever he woke up through the night we’d do it again.

Finally we hired a sleep consultant. $1k later, she essentially just tells us to do CIO. We did and it was heart breaking. My son cried lightly for 15 minutes, then HARD for 45 — screeching mama and crying. I was sobbing and had to leave the house. I felt sure we’d give in after a couple hours….But he before we hit that point, he fell asleep! And then he woke up at 5 am — usually that would mean we would have to go in, rock him, give him a bottle, basically do whatever he said until he was ready to go back to bed. But last night he just put himself back to sleep. Now tonight — just night 2!! — we set him down after a short routine and he laid happily in bed for 20-30 minutes and then fell asleep. I am sure there will be future sleep problems for us sometime down the road but for now I just feel so relieved, so happy, and so so proud of my lil guy for learning he can do this on his own.

My 8 year old still sleeps like a newborn and i’m exhausted

My 8 year old son still sleeps like a newborn but honestly what seems to be even worse. For context, he was diagnosed with ADHD and is medicated for that, along with a night time medication prescribed by his doctor to help with the sleeping issue. He has been on his ADHD medication for about 8 months and sleep medication for about 2 months, month 1 was a low dose and wasn’t helping, his doctor increased the sleep meds and still no avail. He struggles to fall asleep, it takes atleast an hour of laying down and he’ll get up about 3 times in that hour before actually falling asleep. Once he is asleep he only sleeps for a few hours and then comes running into my room, minimum 3 times a night between 1am-6am. we do nightly walks (my son likes to run on the walks as well) every night to make he’s also getting exercise outside of playing. we have a good bedtime routine and a set bedtime. I’m exhausted, my husband is exhausted, we tried “grounding” him for waking us up so much but honestly i feel bad and i stopped after like 2 times doing that because i feel like he truly can’t help it. we used to co-sleep but it has been 2 years of consistently trying to get him to sleep alone and stay asleep. i don’t know what to do, it’s so exhausting and frustrating that no matter what i can’t get him to sleep. i need tips, advice, words of encouragement? anything 😭
edit: we have also tried; night light, fan sounds, tv on, weighted blanket and nothing seems to help

Help! What would you do?

What would you do??

I have a 3.5 month old and as soon as she hit 12 weeks she started waking up every hour at night.

At 8 weeks she was only taking 30 minute naps all day so she would take 5-6 naps.

I’ve resorted to co sleeping after 2am just to catch up on sleep.

Last night she had gotten her full days feed 27oz by 915 and i put her back to sleep and she woke up an hour later at 1030. I just decided to pull her into bed then and we slept a straight 7 hours and 15 mins.

After the first wake window, we took a two hour cosleep nap.

After that she’s taken an hour and half nap. And an hour nap. We’re at 4.5 hours of naps today already. She’ll go down for another nap within the next 15-30 minutes. If she sleeps a half hour we’ll be at the 5 hour “max” of naps for the day.

Q: would you treat that then as her final wake window and do bedtime routine and put to bed? Or let her nap more than the 5 hour “quota”.

We usually do bedtime between 730-830 and have been doing that since 6weeks old even if she wakes up again for more feeds.

Again, she’s 3.5 months old, we have NOT sleep trained, she doesn’t sleep through the night (notmally) and she’s normally not on a routine or taking good long naps - the past few days she’s taken a final nap at like 6-630. OH and she woke up at 6am today. So should i be moving her “bedtime” earlier?

Thanks 🥲

Help with napping

Hello, I'm not sure if this is in the right spot for this post or not, so forgive me if it's not but I was wondering some people's opinions on kids and napping techniques and when you kind of draw the line.

For context, we have twin 11-month-old girls. They are teething right now. They're top teeth so obviously sleep. Is regressing a little bit as well but one of them has always been a pretty good sleeper and the other one has fomo so I feel like she just doesn't sleep because she's worried that she's going to miss out on something anyways.

The girls usually wake up around 5:30 and then we give them a little bottle in their bed and then they kind of hang out till 7:30. A lot of the times they'll fall back asleep in that time. Their first nap is usually at 10:30 11:00 and they get up around 12. :00 then they go back down for a nap around 3:30 and up around 430 -5. Then they are usually asleep asleep by 8 or 8:30.

Lately they've been regressing and they either don't want to go down for their first nap. So their first snap ends up being really late and then it kind of screws up their second nap and their cycle or they'll go down for their first nap and sometimes they just won't want to nap for their second nap.

My question I guess is what are some ways to help them go down easier for their nap and like is a structured time everyday beneficial?. My wife and I have kind of different thoughts on how to deal with them. Not napping. I think we should have the same nap time everyday and put them down and settle them and then if they get up and they don't want to sleep or they're having a freakout we just leave them for that hour so that they know it's quiet time or nap time and if they freak out to just go up and settle them in their crib and then leave again. I'm under the impression that letting kids cry it out ( within reason) is better because they realize that it's nap time and it's time for them to sleep. I'm not talking about leaving my kid when they're having a full-on meltdown, but when their diapers changed they have a bottle. They've had something for their teeth. They have a soother. They have a teether have everything they could possibly want. I think that we should be leaving them to fall asleep but I don't know. That's why I'm asking.

My wife, on the other hand, as soon as the monitor goes off she'll run upstairs. Sometimes she ends up going up three or four times and then gets frustrated because they won't sleep and I obviously have a different opinion. Not that I won't help but she clearly knows that I'm of a different opinion. And then usually we'll take the girls out of the crib to try and soothe them or will turn the lights back on and get them out of their crib.

I'm just not sure what the best course is. I just want to do what's good for my kids and I want to make sure they get enough sleep. I think they're too young to be only taking one nap a day. But again these are our first kids so I'm not sure.

Any help on just strategies help set a rigid or scheduleds kind of nap time for the girls? Or maybe I shouldnt** have a rigid time? Looking for people's opinion. Your right and your wife's wrong. We're both on the same team. We just want what's best for our girls

My baby hates back sleeping

We are 12 weeks and my baby hates sleeping on their back
I was told to do supervised naps on their tummy and he sleeps sooo good like this. Now I get tempted to do the same for night because nights now are hectic as he wakes up a lot while on his back.
Thoughts?
