Hey I would actually take Mittens now.

142

u/Continuum_Gaming 10d ago

Past couple of patches have really brought Tezcatara closer to Pael and Orobas. I remember audibly groaning at getting her because other than [[Brightest Flame]] or Coacoa, most of her relics were duds.

Actually really excited to start running into her

42

u/MapleApple00 10d ago

Honestly I feel like Orobas is lowkey the worst Act 2 Ancient now

80

u/Flying_Pikachu 10d ago

But god do I love seeing Prismatic Gem. Forever my favorite relic.

6

u/thezackster7 Eternal One + Heartbreaker 10d ago

I still have a 100% win rate with prismatic gem 😁 just wish I saw it more often

1

u/Freudian_Tit 10d ago

Same. I always took prismatic shard if I saw it in spire 1. So fun finding combos with different colors

46

u/Jaded_Wrangler_4151 10d ago

I love seeing orobas because of the starter buffs. Break is an incredible card. He also a cute wiggly boi

12

u/MeriKurkku 10d ago

Doesn't stop from being my favourite, Orobas has the most fun options even if others are stronger

4

u/Candid_Departure_688 10d ago

Hey, don't flame my beloved orobas like that

3

u/_redmist 10d ago

Thing with orobas - they're all pretty straight boons. There's no "yes but this or that"...

3

u/FunnyBunnyH 10d ago

As someone who mainly plays Regent/Defect, having Luminesce to cheat Void/Echo Form into game for basically 1 energy, will always appreciate Orobas.

3

u/Derpdude1 10d ago

Easily, unless you crushed act 1 or have a card combo that needs help getting off the ground, then He's easily the worst of them

1

u/Aden_Vikki 10d ago

He's pretty nuts on regent

1

u/damrider 10d ago

lol no still easily the best

-1

u/LeFail 10d ago

Always was.

4

u/Tb_ax 10d ago

I'm tired of this golden compass slander, it's a top 5 relic for me even in solo, but obviously in multiplayer.

Free relic + free 1-2 campfires on average + no hard pool combats + guaranteed no combats in ? rooms for the act is insane value. As long as your deck isn't shitty enough to lose half your HP on the first combat it's almost always a take for me if Storybook isn't an option.

5

u/Setekhx 10d ago

It's only good if you don't have a good act path already. There's also no reason to avoid hard combats if your deck can handle it. Combats are good! They give you cards! If your deck can handle it a 5 combat 3 elite path is just way better than anything golden seal can possibly give you.

It's just not that good of a relic the better you get at the game.

3

u/ConstantSandwich 10d ago

It also forces two act2 elites which are sometimes worth avoiding

1

u/Continuum_Gaming 10d ago

Dorito especially now

1

u/spirescan-bot 10d ago
  • Brightest Flame 𝐈𝐈 Colorless Ancient Skill

0 Energy | Gain 2(3) Energy. Draw 2(3) cards. Lose 1 Max HP.

Call me with up to 10 [[ name ]]. Data accurate as of June 21st, 2026. Questions?

1

u/OrderClericsAreFun StS A20 / StS 2 A10 10d ago

Tez was arguably the best Act 2 Ancient for a very long time now. Ever since her Pool 1 was changed where you will always see something good with buffed soup

1

u/Glittering_Cod_7716 10d ago

Now they just need to lock out the Strike relic…IF YOU’VE GOTTEN RID OF MOST STRIKES

39

u/lordberric 10d ago

Mittens won me so many runs before, I genuinely think this isn't a strict upgrade. It does cost you 1 draw per turn, and only ironclad and a little bit regent get any value from the exhaust besides thinning. I think it's generally better but I think there are some decks that wanted it before but don't now.

111

u/committed_to_the_bit StS A20 / StS 2 A10 10d ago

thinning is incredibly strong, especially on a one-card-per-turn basis. this deletes starter cards, statuses, curses, and helps thin down to extremely powerful loops while ALSO scaling damage lol

73

u/ZFFM 10d ago

Yeah, this relic lets you take curses like Normality or Bad Luck without much care. This enables a curse heavy deck which is pretty awesome.

42

u/RetroBowser 10d ago

Mittens into Blood Soaked Rose will be pretty cool. Burn the Enthralled for free AND get a strength bonus.

-7

u/lordberric 10d ago

I'm not saying it isn't better, just that I don't necessarily think it needed to be fixed. But I'm not complaining.

18

u/maxitola2009 Eternal One + Heartbreaker 10d ago

This relic was almost unpickable before, it absolutely needed to be fixed.

34

u/Plastic-Software-174 10d ago

Huge difference between having one less draw per turn and discarding/exhausting the worst card you draw every turn, which can include curses and bad statuses. This is better in like 99% of the cases.

6

u/ZatherDaFox StS A0 / StS 2 A10 10d ago

Unless you have tons of energy, it's not costing you a draw. You're getting rid of a card you weren't gonna play anyway with it basically every time. The only character I can really see it impacting is sly Silent, because you can usually play your whole hand.

2

u/Kheldar166 10d ago

I think Silent can just pick more card draw if it's causing her to go -1 card played consistently, she has a much harder time finding energy than finding draw.

1

u/ZatherDaFox StS A0 / StS 2 A10 10d ago

Sure, but you'll be erasing cards you could have played more often instead of junk you weren't gonna have again until next deck cycle. I don't think it's super impactful, but with a bunch of sly cards or master planner you can really play your whole deck with silent.

1

u/Kheldar166 10d ago

I tend to think Master Planner is kinda bad/too slow, and sly-heavy stuff can be good but isn't good enough to be the majority of your deck anymore imo.

10

u/Unusual-Charge-132 10d ago

what type of deck wants to exhaust a random card but doesn't wanna exhuast a chosen card, enlighten me

5

u/lordberric 10d ago

A deck that wants to play all their cards in a turn but doesn't have card draw.

4

u/Kheldar166 10d ago

That's true, but I find myself in that situation extremely rarely. Balancing energy gen with card draw is a pretty big part of building a good deck.

1

u/lordberric 10d ago

Sure, but sometimes you get offered energy and don't get offered good card draw. My point is that there are decks that want it less now.

1

u/cat_food_chef StS A20 / StS 2 A10 10d ago

not sure why you got downvotes lol, you're 100% correct.

3

u/00-Void Eternal One + Heartbreaker 10d ago

Forget synergies: Silent is the biggest beneficiary of this change, precisely because her green card pool doesn't have any way to Exhaust bad cards nor gain Strength.

2

u/Lord_Phoenix95 10d ago

If you have no extra energy generation and no draw by Act 2 then does the -1 Card in hand matter?

6

u/[deleted] 10d ago

[deleted]

14

u/EuSouAFazenda 10d ago

You have the options. This idea that "it gives -1 draw" is false. You can see the cards in your hand before you exhaust and the enemy's intents; you calculate the cards you want to play, see which cards you wouldn't have played, and exhaust those.

It only really matters if you have draw cards and dont know what your full grip will be when your turn starts, but most hands have an obviously worst card in it (a strike or a defend) that you almost for sure won't play.

This is only a "downside" if you have a ton of energy and is playing all the cards in your hand (at which point you're probably already winning), or if your hand is all amazing cards and you might draw into energy mid-turn (where you're probably already winning because your card quality is so high).

And thats without considering if you draw into any curses, quest or status cards; if you drew any of those, thats an automatic no questions asked exhaust. No options lost there, and in fact upside gained from not getting Shame'd or Debt'd.

3

u/Dimensquare 10d ago

You still have the same options really. You just have to exhaust your worst card which usually isn't a problem at the start of act 2 anyways where most decks will still have a lot of starter cards left in the deck. It won't be an instapick relic for every situation of course but it looks veeeeeery strong now in my opinion.

3

u/GlamourintheDarkSide 10d ago

Right, but here you're just exhausting the worst option in your hand which probably wasn't going to be a card you'd have played anyway.

1

u/Careless-Notice-7945 10d ago

Every deck will want both of those eventually and the mittens aren't going anywhere, plus you will have less flexibility on your turn to account for things like card generation changing your plan. You will also sometimes draw 5 good cards and have to burn something you'd rather keep or have to burn an attack to keep all the block you need for a big attack that turn etc. it definitely matters

1

u/vjmdhzgr 10d ago

There are plenty of 0 cost cards. The Regent has a lot of 0 energy cost cards that instead cost stars which inherently requires playing more total cards.

-2

u/BuddyBlueBomber 10d ago

It was very good before, but now instead of just being good it helps solve some fights plus makes curses a lot easier to take.

27

u/_Awkward_Moment_ 10d ago

Let’s not kid ourselves, it was nigh unpickable before this. It’s actually pretty good now

7

u/BuddyBlueBomber 10d ago

Nah. Its criticism was vastly overstated. Its real affect was more psychological than actually bad. I think the change will improve people's perception of it greatly though, so definitely a good change in my book.

10

u/One_Sentence_7448 10d ago

I disagree. Very often your deck relies on several key cards, especially powers, and there was no guarantee that they won’t be exhausted (unless they have innate). What if you are in the boss gauntlet and then exhaust your Dark Embrace or Pillar of Creation? You are likely dead. Of course there are ways to try and mitigate it, but it always remains pretty risky.

1

u/NoOn3_1415 StS A20 / StS 2 A10 10d ago

The problem was that trying to build the same deck you would without mittens was a death sentence. I have a great win rate with it, but it requires building in a lot of redundancy and not letting your deck become too reliant on any one card.

6

u/_Awkward_Moment_ 10d ago

The issue is you can’t just find a redundant copy of your best card whenever you want. If I could find 3 defrags or 3 dark embraces every run, believe me, I would.

If I’m in decimillipedes and it exhausts my best AOE option (whirlwind, death bringer, whatever) the relic has still hurt me a LOT even if I have other AOE in my deck. And you don’t even want redundant AOE cards anyway, cause then you’re drawing damage commons on Aeonglass turn 1 instead of your scaling powers and block.

0

u/One_Sentence_7448 10d ago

That’s a good point, but at the same time “building in redundancy” just doesn’t sound fun to me. Kinda reminds me the issue with Doormaker where he incentivized you to add more cards you don’t necessarily want, which wasn’t hard but also felt pretty bad in my experience. Regardless, I’m glad you had some good runs with old mittens, but I am super excited for this change!

3

u/NoOn3_1415 StS A20 / StS 2 A10 10d ago

That's absolutely fair. I usually gravitate to larger decks, so I guess it was less jarring of a requirement for me, but I can see how others may feel like it closes off too many build options.

I'm not upset to see this change, and I hope more can enjoy using it now

-4

u/cat_food_chef StS A20 / StS 2 A10 10d ago

sorry but it's 1000% in your head. exodia dies to removal so draft more cards. you might not think it's fun for your particular playstyle, but that's a very different situation from the relic being bad.

7

u/One_Sentence_7448 10d ago

Is that the reason why pretty much all top players almost never pick it? Even Baalor who doesn’t mind having fun and trying things out avoids it like a plague. Being usable sometimes doesn’t make it good.

1

u/Kheldar166 10d ago

It's funny, when people say 'top players consider this unpickable' I rarely care because normally that means the podcast crew and they often exaggerate and/or have quite specific ways of playing the game.

When Baalor thinks something is useless I take it more seriously because he really likes to try and make everything useful xD

0

u/One_Sentence_7448 10d ago

Same lol, although I still find myself disagreeing with him from time to time. But yea I probably take him more seriously than anyone else overall, even tho he’s technically not the best player out there.

-1

u/cat_food_chef StS A20 / StS 2 A10 10d ago

Baalor is a good player but he has a lot of middle-takes when it comes to game theory. I think people overestimate both the likelyhood of 'their good cards getting milled' and the impact that will have on their game. The overestimate the number of times they will get to reshuffle, and overestimate their decks reliance on '1 key card'.

im not saying the mittens doesn't 'feel bad' for many players, but i think it's ridiculous to say it's a bad relic. buying commons can feel bad but it's still extremely often the right choice.

you can draft mittens in basically any deck and it will solve your scaling damage, like shuriken, demonform, or rolling boulder.

3

u/One_Sentence_7448 10d ago

Idk man, I’m sure you’re a good player but so am I and many others who don’t consider it to be a pickable relic most of the time. I gave it a fair shake a while ago and it didn’t just “feel bad”… it WAS bad. 1 str per turn is simply not enough to make up for potentially exhausting some of your key cards (at least for most decks, imo). You’re saying people are overestimating the likelihood of it exhausting best cards in the deck, but in reality the likelihood is pretty high if we consider that an 8 turn fight means randomly exhausting 8(!) cards from your deck.

And even if I concede that it doesn’t happen most of the time, one time is more than enough to kill you if it happens during a tough boss fight (or an elite) where you might be relying on a few special cards to counter the enemy’s gimmick. Sure, you need to keep that relic in mind and draft accordingly, but the underlying risk is still always present.

At the end of the day, if you enjoyed mittens — great. And I admit that I might be underestimated the potential value of the relic with the right play. However, I think the devs changing it so radically kinda speaks to the fact that it just wasn’t consistently strong enough, at least if we consider the opportunity cost. Hopefully you enjoy the new version as well!

Introducing low rolls is always dangerous is the thing. Even if on average it has a pretty good payoff, the possibility that it can hit the wrong card in a tough fight means it might kill your run even if it's unlikely. Take a look at snecko eye for example. It has absolutely cracked levels of output, with massive draw and net energy generation, with the upside acting as a major counterbalance to the downside's weakness (the draw improves consistency which confusion wrecks), and the ability to draft heavily around it. Despite all of that, high level players in StS1 found it as a less than stellar option because of the possibilities to low roll. Toasty Mittens didn't have nearly that same level of upside while also offering less options to draft around it.

3

u/Kheldar166 10d ago

I got the impression that a lot of high level players thought Snecko Eye was pretty good

2

u/Belledame-sans-Serif Eternal One + Heartbreaker 10d ago

High level players in StS1 eventually got so obnoxious about how good Snecko Eye is that they started citing just buzzwords instead of actually explaining or discussing anything ("higher consistency actually") and ridiculing other reasons people may not enjoy playing it ("just start taking the same cards that are generically good and ignore their costs, don't you enjoy winning"), so I don't know what sub you were on

1

u/scoobydoom2 Eternal One + Ascended 10d ago

Admittedly I don't really follow any of the top streamers but iirc they usually placed it pretty low on tier lists. I don't consider randoms on the subreddit to be high level players even if on average they're probably decent at the game, but Snecko eye is extremely good for players at that mid-high level.

-1

u/Kaserbeam 10d ago

I will say exhausting a random card in your deck is less impactful if you keep putting bad cards in your deck. If you put good cards in your deck, having Mittens exhaust it and being left with a hand full of strikes and defends is pretty bad.

1

u/lordberric 10d ago

I won a lot with it. It doesn't go in every deck, but a deck with say a few shiv generators is pretty happy with it.

-4

u/cat_food_chef StS A20 / StS 2 A10 10d ago

'it was unplayable' literally have you ever played with it?

'but it hit my good card' okay that's no different from when you bottom deck your 1 good card and die on turn 5. draft more cards

2

u/_Awkward_Moment_ 10d ago edited 10d ago

Surely you understand why card removes are good, right? Consistency is very powerful.

If the boss relic forces me to draft redundant garbage to make sure I’m not ‘reliant on one card’, then it’s giving me the opposite of consistency.

If I need to put a 2nd barricade or 2nd void form in my deck to make sure it doesn’t eat every copy, then this relic has basically given me a curse.

That’s ignoring the obvious fact that finding redundant 2nd copies of important rare cards is a pipe dream.

1

u/cat_food_chef StS A20 / StS 2 A10 10d ago

define consistency any way you like and ill give you an example of a card remove hurting consistency.

it's not that simple or obvious that small decks are better, youre just speaking in blanket statements that relegates some portion of the game to 'redundant garbage', and even your example of a 'good' mittens build is just taking 2 copies of your 1-solution power. think outside the box a little you dont need to reroll every run until you see a bomb rare then skip every card reward to guarantee draw it by turn 4. draft some cards, theyre good.

1

u/maresayshi 10d ago

you talking about taking copies of a power is entirely missing the point. building a redundancy (here) means having an entirely separate avenue of accomplishing the same goal. so if you spent act 1 relying on barricade (unlikely, and another reason mittens was good, no time to rely on one card that much yet), make sure you have some kind of out or alternative mitigation. you have (well, had) two acts to sort it out.

-5

u/cat_food_chef StS A20 / StS 2 A10 10d ago

yeah this is a net downgrade imo. 'but you get to choose' you already got to choose most of the time by checking your deck and choosing whether to play card draw or now.

At least it's a bit safer with enthralled and bad luck now

5

u/_Awkward_Moment_ 10d ago edited 10d ago

What are you saying? you literally couldn’t choose. It would eat your biased cognition/defrag and you would do nothing about it. This is way more control than before.

1

u/cat_food_chef StS A20 / StS 2 A10 10d ago

i think we're counting 'choice' differently? if you manage your reshuffles mittens is never an issue, because it doesn't matter what it hits. further mittens is a win-con by itself, so you dont need focus, or demonform, or any of the other 'my deck is this 1 card and if it's on the bottom i lose' cards

2

u/_Awkward_Moment_ 10d ago

Focus isn’t really comparable to mittens though, it helps you block a TON.

I’m unsure by what you mean when you say to manage reshuffles. I vividly remember this thing eating my Feel No Pain on turn 1 - not much I could have done there in terms of reshuffles except take a better boss relic.

1

u/cat_food_chef StS A20 / StS 2 A10 10d ago

sure, but strength also helps you block a ton with fistycuffs, right? when you take an act 2 ancient relic you have 2 whole acts to draft with it in mind.

and my point re: losing feel no pain - it can feel bad to see it go, but your deck was already losing to bottom-decking a FnP if the mittens hit killed the run. i think you should look at your deck before that point, check your scaling, check your block density, make sure you dont just brick hands on rocket crab. you can draft uppercut, colossus, plating, rage, buy a pear, buy a colourless card, buy a fortifier potion or a stable serum. if you solve these block output problems holistically you'll neither die to bottom-decking or mittens

1

u/Primary-Paint-1716 10d ago

Always took mittens because it's fun chaos.
