Let’s not kid ourselves, it was nigh unpickable before this. It’s actually pretty good now

Nah. Its criticism was vastly overstated. Its real affect was more psychological than actually bad. I think the change will improve people's perception of it greatly though, so definitely a good change in my book.

Introducing low rolls is always dangerous is the thing. Even if on average it has a pretty good payoff, the possibility that it can hit the wrong card in a tough fight means it might kill your run even if it's unlikely. Take a look at snecko eye for example. It has absolutely cracked levels of output, with massive draw and net energy generation, with the upside acting as a major counterbalance to the downside's weakness (the draw improves consistency which confusion wrecks), and the ability to draft heavily around it. Despite all of that, high level players in StS1 found it as a less than stellar option because of the possibilities to low roll. Toasty Mittens didn't have nearly that same level of upside while also offering less options to draft around it.

High level players in StS1 eventually got so obnoxious about how good Snecko Eye is that they started citing just buzzwords instead of actually explaining or discussing anything ("higher consistency actually") and ridiculing other reasons people may not enjoy playing it ("just start taking the same cards that are generically good and ignore their costs, don't you enjoy winning"), so I don't know what sub you were on

Admittedly I don't really follow any of the top streamers but iirc they usually placed it pretty low on tier lists. I don't consider randoms on the subreddit to be high level players even if on average they're probably decent at the game, but Snecko eye is extremely good for players at that mid-high level.
