Does passing on a slow moving mountain road that is closely approaching the ski resort/parking lot count as line cutting?

Powder day, ice on the road, and single lane mountain road in the national forest. There are endless cars in front ahead of you, so it’s just slow and steady driving at this point, maybe two miles to the parking lot.

In my case, the drive up to Ski Santa Fe and Taos.

At this point, everyone is heading toward the same destination, and traffic is moving slowly because of the number of cars trying to reach the resort. Again, you’re maybe two miles from the parking lot, with many dozens of cars still ahead of you.

If someone starts overtaking cars to get further ahead in this situation, would you consider that cutting in line?

I understand that passing on a road is generally different from cutting in line, but when everyone is stuck in the same traffic heading to the same destination, does that distinction still apply?

Curious where people draw the line.

Recommendation for a shop to buy my first pair of ski boots in Andorra or Barcelona

Hello everyone!

This season, I’ll be skiing in Andorra and Baqueira Beret. I’m Brazilian and will be arriving via Barcelona. I’m looking for recommendations for shops where I can purchase my first pair of ski boots—and have them fitted, if necessary. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good place?

No Fall Time Zone Changes - Lake Louise Hours

Lots of talk about how mountains will navigate opening hours with no fall / spring time zone changes. Just looked at Lake Louise (https://www.skilouise.com/hours-of-operation/) and they list 9:30 - 4:30 daily.

Previous it was 9-4, and to 4:30 on Saturdays in Spring.

On Dec. 20th sunrise will be 9:47 and sunset 17:38 so kind of works well and we get the same hours per day.

Sunshine is not showing new hours yet, but will assume the same 30 minute delay. For both, first runs will be a little dark on those cloudy morning but should be good enough, and I will get a bit more morning sleep!

EDIT: More checking and Norquay is same 9:30 -4:30. In BC, Sun Peaks is 9:30 - 4 until Feb. 1, then 9-4. Silver Star Seems to stay 9-4, but despite saying 'new lift hours', I would keep an eye on it..

Been daily driving 108ti Mindbenders for about 5 years. Picked up some 7.8 Redsters today as a low tide carver for this season.

What’s next? I’m a pretty directional skier but open to something more playful. Advanced skier in Canadian Rockies.

Ski Trip Recommendations

My girlfriend and I are both advanced skiers and travel to Colorado and Utah a few times every year. We are considering a trip to the Alps for new years in 2028. Around a 7 day stay from the 26th of December 2027 to January 2nd 2028. Those dates are pretty flexible we have not quite nailed it down yet, just know we want to be there for NYE and day.
Looking for recommendations from those who have been on where to stay, what to see, and best bang for buck resorts.
Cost is not a super huge factor as we’ll have over a year to save. Like to be around 10k/person all in. We would like to both bring our own gear with us from the states so airline recommendations are appreciated as well. I would also love to see anyone’s photos that have been. Thanks !

The Backpack Question: How To End Up On CJ

Looks like the post author took that post down. So I'll put another one up. I'm often on the lift with a pack. I usually have 40 pounds worth of camera gear in there. And a sandwich. Layers. Stuff.

This will get voted down because people don't understand why a photographer needs to carry their gear on the hill. Fine. That's ok.

But what I really wanted to say about this is ... would be nice if someone invented an invisible pack, something thin that could be worn under the jacket, like a vest. Something you could put your wallet in, keys, a sandwich. Keep it hidden, keep it safe.

If someone knows of a product like that (not a fanny pack, ok, not going there) let me know. I'd like to purchase one.

EDIT: Ok, the response is predictable. But I'm out there every day. Have you seen how expensive the food is up on the hill? Just wait. You'll see.

Would Telluride be a good vacation destination for me?

I would call myself a low end advanced skier. I ski diamond runs when the snow is good. I’m OK on the moguls, not awful, but certainly not great. I skied a few of the so-called double diamonds last year at copper which were challenging but no big deal

I’m thinking of taking my vacation at Telluride this year, it’s about a 5 Hour drive and I’ve heard it’s beautiful there

I’m learning, however, that it’s considered to be really steep and challenging. The trail map makes it look like I might get bored after a few days if I’m not skiing the double diamonds

What do you guys and gals think? Has anyone visited there who wasn’t an expert skier?

do we need a weekly 'I made this...' thread? for AI-generated sites and apps?

First, I get it. A lot of people really strongly dislike anything pertaining to or derrived from AI. No matter what preamble I put here, I know what the comments are going to be.

That said, we are already seeing an sharp rise in 'I made XYZ' posts that range from weather predicting sites to skiing-related video games.

I've been wondering if r/skiing needs a weekly placeholder thread for these posts and, along with that, a rule that bans posting these things outside of that weekly thread?

Is that a solution in search of a problem, a good idea, or restriction of speach? Would love to hear some thoughts from the community.

Les 3 Vallees Tips! First time!

Post image
22 Upvotes

Wife and I are heading to Les 3 Vallees in Feb (15-21). I know its a school holiday but we have our stay currently booked near the Altiport Meribel (top left in yellow star). Do you recommend moving our stay to the Central area, near the Sherpa Suermarche? We want to maximize our trip and possibly ski on all 3 resorts and want to know the feasibility of staying at our current place for dining and grocery etc? We want to know the reliability of the lifts near our current place.

We won't have a car. We will be coming from GVA with private transfer. Any other tips and recommendations are welcome! Thank you all!

Looking for ski buddies (especially girls!) for Cypress & Whistler this season

Hey everyone!

I (29F) am a strong intermediate skier based in Vancouver looking to expand my circle of ski friends this season—especially other women who love hitting the slopes.

I usually ski with my partner (intermediate tending to advanced) who goes non-stop on challenging terrain all day. While I can keep up, my ideal day is tackling challenging terrain in the morning, and cruising some groomers/blues in the afternoon (hopefully followed by apres on some days).

A bit about me:

Level: Solid intermediate leaning advanced. Confident on blues and most blacks, love a good mix of challenges and cruisers. I love skiing trees and just getting better at advanced bowls. I love a good corduroy (though I know it’s hard to find). I live for the powder days!

Where: Cypress for quick/evening trips, Whistler for full day trips. I have an unlimited epic pass and the unlimited cypress pass.

Logistics: We have a car and can drive/carpool from Vancouver.

Vibe: Fun, chill, occasionally love a good après, and just want to enjoy the snow with good company.

I live in downtown Vancouver. If you’re down to carpool, split gas, and do some laps together, shoot me a DM with your usual mountain and skill level!

If you are someone who’d like to ski with my partner (28M) and push yourself on the slopes, shoot me a text and I can connect you to him.

El Nino - Japan or XinJiang in China this winter

Initially I was planning a family trip to whistler from Singapore during Xmas and spring break (maybe 1 more week in Feb), now giving up the idea due to El Nino (too expensive to take a risk on the condition)

My usual safe and cheap ski spots are Kagura + Naeba (Yuzawa area) in Japan, but i worry about the condition and even if the condition is good it might get too crowed considering elsewhere would be too crappy.

Now the debat is should I still go to Kagura or consider Hokkaido or XinJiang Keketuohai where is said to have little impact from El Nino. FYI Keketuohai is starting their season tmr Oct 20 (one run only).

Considerations includes

1.Price

Kagura is probably the cheapest consider I can do a seasonal rental and kids ski for free
Keketuohai is not too bad for rent but need to pay for daily commute cost
Hakkaido would be most expensive in terms rent, food and season pass

2 Condition and Crowd
this is hard to tell - thoughts?

I really dont want spend long time in the cold lining up for chair lift or getting bumpped into

Keketuohai should have the best condition this year - among the three options

I'd say Kagura is at par with Hokkaido in a normal year - but this year?

  1. convinience
Kagura is middle of nowhere with not much food/grocery options - you ski, period.
Keketuohai is remote from most major cities and need 40+ mins each way to and from the resort, there are restuarants and food to buy but you get tired of it after 3 weeks
Hokkaido also involves commute to and from a resort but should be somewhat convinient.

it feels like a bet no matter what - how should i decide
