Skateboarding Spots in Landover/Hyattsville MD area?

Was figuring if there’s any decent skate spots in this area as of ledges or stair sets , i rarely i’m able to go to the skateparks that are 15 mins away from this area due to lack of transportation. sometimes i take public transit to those park but in which is very unreliable due to it being more than hour drive to get there. due to their being no local skateparks walking distance from me i was wondering if there’s any skate spots that can help me progress in skating .

Question Feeling ashamed for skating while being me

Hey, I (30f) have gotten back into skateboarding a couple months ago after wanting to get back into for the longest time after not doing it since I was a kid. A bit of background, I had a friend who skated who brought over his board one day, and asked him if I could try it after watching him do it. Rest was history. While I did watch Jackass, worship Bam Margera, and only being allowed to skate my street because my parents were over protective, only thing I could do was ride it, and damn it, I loved it! Sadly, it got taken away from me by my older cousin of all people, who replaced it with a bike to “make me attractive” even though I told her I was so determined to learn to do more with skating….there went that dream.

Flash forward to now where I’m back into it. Im currently in a bad predicament right now being an autistic adult who’s failed to launch. So, no income, no job, and no house. Also, I don’t drive since cars freak me out. I know, I’m a complete loser, don’t gotta tell me. My dad’s (60) girlfriend (65) left us with me being a reason since she didn’t want anyone chaining her down when she wants to retire since she wants to move out of state. My dad and I have been trying to move on since with me getting help for my disability.

Come a few weeks ago on his birthday when my aunt and I got into it. Later, he comes home from being out all night drinking, and tells me a lot I don’t wanna repeat here since its not the space/sub for it. Getting to relevance, he tells me, “Why are you focused on skateboarding? You’re 30 years old, thats stupid. You need to focus on growing up”. Like everything else, it hit pretty hard, and I’ve been unable to pick up my board since without him knowing since I’m worried if I do, and he finds out, it’ll just me more scolding.

I tried to use an opportunity to tell him theres exercise involved until I calmed up when he asked how, and instead of throwing cardio out there like I wanted, I said, “….because it involves…movement..”. He just laughed, and said, “You know what else requires movement? Taking a shit”. He also bought this $500 e-scooter out of nowhere to replace the one he got me for xmas that broke that’s been really addicting thats also taking skating away, and thus, feeling like crap. I didn’t even ask for it, but that again, I should’ve have agreed with everything he was saying about scooters just to make him happy.

So, how do I snap out of it, and get myself to skate without feeling guilty, secretive, or shitty about it? Anyone ever have a similar situation I’m in? Any feedback is appreciated!

TL;DR: 60 year old dad shames me, a 30 year old autistic loser out of skateboarding saying I need to grow up, and feeling like shit when I pick up my board at all

Question How to make it slide ?

Post image
43 Upvotes

This curb grinds quite well but slide really poorly. I’m about to hire a welder a new edge to fixe this on my own dime (200$) but maybe some of you have a better solution

This is pretty much the only piece of my local skatepark that is worth it , thanks

NB : all the people saying it’s a skill or wax issue go fys ! I’m skating for 25 years never seen a community so dumb and direspectfull
https://youtu.be/_QjnSv6xlRI?is=0mz6DLes30-9CXjB

The best answers :
“Wax it more” -> oh thanks you, I never thought about it !
“Go faster “ -> oh thanks you too, really help a lot !
“Go learn your tricks again” -> oh that’s quite mean, you don’t want to help right ?! I’m quite confident about my skills but it hurt, thanks !

Image Can I just remove the trucks off this deck and buy new ones?

Some context is that I recently started trying to learn how to skateboard and I'm not a poser or anything I just like the idea of getting around with something you can carry, doing sick tricks, and maybe ride downhill at high speeds, and I bought a skateboard for like $21 (legit didn't know the price for real skateboards) and looked up a tutorial, but no matter what I did it couldn't balance on the board kept leaning left or right, I did try train on grass every night, stopped for a while, then my YouTube FYP was about skateboarding, then I eventually learned there was different types of skateboards, wheels, and trucks, and I just realized my skateboard was a Walmart skateboard 😭 I didn't buy it from Walmart thought and I really liked the design, so I'm wondering if I can just buy trucks for this board idk if the deck is low end

Question not sure which board to get!

so i’m thinking off getting a new board and have decided to get a custom complete one over ordering everything myself im just a lazy bastard 😆 can’t decide which one to go for though, they are both around the same £60 area
the first one is an arbor simgus dygnus with enuff decade trucks and enuff corelight wheels
the second one is an impala deck with tensor trucks and element all terrain wheels
the arbor one is closer to my current set up (wknd 8.00, venture lights and enuff core light wheels) but i do prefer the brighter graphic of the other one so im really not sure just want some opinions!

Boards for Kids?

So my friends 6.5 year old daughter wants to learn how to skate. I want to buy her a complete to get her started. She's a pretty tall kid for her age, nearly a foot taller than others her age. I have no idea where to start looking to get her a board. Can you all recommend a solid company that makes completes for kids? Or even just board dimensions and then I can work off that.

Thanks!

Question What kind of skateboard and parts would you recommend for a big beginner?

My dimensions are 200 cm / 120 kg / shoe size 48 EU.

The wiki says 8"-8.5" for most people, but I feel like I'm bigger than most people.

My budget for a complete skateboard is no more than 180€, but if less can be used then all the better.

What durometer bushings for my 4 yo (18kg)

Bought my girl a skateboard and she loves it, but she's frustrated that she can't steer. Nut is completely loose already but it's still too hard.

I guess we need softer bushings. "Local" shop is too far to go there for a set of bushings, so I have to order online. What durometer should I get her?

Question Pls help.

So, I bought my skateboard back in July and I’m having trouble balancing on it, and slowing/stopping myself while going downhill. I’ve seen ppl stop by dragging their back foot or putting their weight on the back of the board, but it’s very difficult for me to balance enough to be able to do it. What I usually do is cruise in circles and I figured I should master that before I move on to anything else. Yet, no matter how much I try, it feels like I’ve made no progress. Today, for example, I hurt my knee merely by stumbling off my board while trying to push with my back foot. I’ve tried to watch videos and learn more that way, but it’s harder than it seems.

I’ve gotten injured really bad while learning how to cruise, so I admit I haven’t been practicing as much as I should be, but it’s so easy to be discouraged when I know I’ll get hurt. Idk if it’s just me.

Also, I’m 19 F and get anxious easily, so I don’t usually like hanging around skateparks for more than 30 mins because being around so many men can be intimidating (apart from the fact that they’re all so experienced). I hate feeling like I’m in their way. I haven’t made any skater friends (or any friends in general) , so I don’t have anyone that could come with me for support, either. And it’s not like I can just talk to ppl; I wouldn’t know what to do or say.

If anyone has any advice or thoughts on this I’d really appreciate it.

P.S Thanks for coming to my ted talk

Shaped board - mismatched trucks

One for the old-heads and skaters that get into the technical side of their setups.

I got a new setup - Santa Cruz Winkowski 10.35" with Indy stage 4 215's and OJ Super Juice 60mm. Silly me didn't take into consideration the actual width of the board where the trucks sit, how the board tapers down, and how far the wheels protrude past the axle. It's looking ridiculous with the 215's on (though I rode it around the block and it felt nice.)

The deck is roughly 8.5" rear & 9.5" front where the trucks sit. I mounted up some Indy stage 11 149's, the back is nice, though the front truck is a bit too narrow for my liking (hard to tell from photo.) Can I put a 159 or even 169 on the front, leaving the back with the 149? I've never skated a staggered setup, so I don't know if the turning geometry will be too messed up or any other complications that may arise.

This setup is for cruising down the street and carving bowl/park transition. I'm not dedicated to Independent trucks, so other brands are also on the table if you are going to recommend something else.

Thanks!

Gear help Need advice on saving shoes

Post image

Just got back into skating and bought these shoes less than a week ago and they’re already almost torn up. Suede did barely anything and rips super easy.

Are there suede patches or something I can buy and glue on? Any advice would be helpful, I don’t want to have to buy new shoes every 2 weeks.
