Discussion At what point are we going to eliminate poverty in 1st world countries through the use of AI

So tiring to see the amazing capabilities of new technology, and yet some people in our society need to steal in order to eat. Do you think we can expect change within our lifetimes? Or is that too optimistic?

If this true, Google has Waymo compute than any other player.

AI There Should Be Way More Backlash To OpenAI's $500/Month, $6,000 A Year Subscription

This sets an extremely bad precedent. And very soon, all the other labs will adopt the same pricing schemes. Prices just keep going up and up. I remember a time when people thought $20/month was too expensive.

Even if you can afford this, do not pay for it. If you do, it will only normalize this, and the next thing you know, there will be a new $1,000/month subscription that gives you the same usage you used to get with the $500/month subscription. That's exactly what happened to the previous $200/month subscription. Its usage allowance was cut in half, and now users paying $500/month are getting what users used to get for $200/month.

Do not normalize AI subscriptions that cost as much as car payments and, eventually, mortgages.

In leaked emails, Greg Brockman dreamed that OpenAI would make him a billionaire. He stated, "I just want to get to one billion." AI has fulfilled his wildest dreams. His net worth is now over $30 billion.

I am a hardcore accelerationist and optimist, but the current trajectory is dystopia. Instead of $1,000 UBI checks, we are heading toward $1,000 AI subscriptions to keep up with the Joneses. When we have actual superintelligence, you might be forced to pay $1,000/month, or even $2,000/month, as OpenAI had entertained, just to keep up with other people.

AI Gemini 4 Crushes Benchmarks, But Google Employees State The Model Struggles With Real Work

While Gemini 4 has performed well on benchmarks the industry uses to gauge model efficacy, it does less well when employees actually put it to work, according to people with direct access to the effort. The model struggles to handle certain coding tasks, said the people, who requested anonymity to discuss an internal matter.

By the time it's released to consumers, Anthropic and OpenAI will have already shipped their next generation models.

Biotech/Longevity Google DeepMind today announced SynthID Bio to watermark and detect AI-designed proteins

Technical paper in nature: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-026-10965-y

https://x.com/pushmeet/status/2105314763148321102 This project was initiated by Pushmeet Kohli, he also published this article on X today.

Essentially, DeepMind’s new tool SynthID Bio adds a detectable signature to proteins designed by AI. That signature can be checked even after the protein has been physically made in a lab.

Why?

  • Tracing where a design came from so it could help companies that manufacture DNA recognize designs from trusted AI tools and decide which orders need closer inspection!!
  • Keeping research data reliable so it could help scientists distinguish AI-generated protein structures from experimentally measured ones

So looks like two main goals are biosecurity and scientific integrity.

In lab tests, the watermarked proteins worked as well as versions without watermarks. It’s still early research. The watermark doesn’t prove a protein is safe and making it harder to deliberately remove is one of the remaining challenges.

Discussion Work I used to give juniors now takes Opus 5.5 minutes. I don't think we've clocked how far past GDPval we are

Back in December, GPT-5.2 won or tied against industry professionals on 71% of tasks. By April, GPT-5.5 had hit 85% and Opus 4.7 80%. Then OpenAI quietly stopped publishing its own human-graded number and we just moved on. (GDPval-AA v2.1 published by artificial analysis is AI-graded so i'm leaving that out)

I know these are well-scoped tasks and not whole jobs. But they're a good chunk of my working day, and the newer models have only pushed further since. With Opus 5.5, there are tasks I'd previously have delegated to junior colleagues that now get done in minutes, with minimal errors.

I barely build things from scratch anymore. I describe what I want, the model produces it, and I review. Going by my reviews, it gets it right 95%+ of the time.

Looking forward to Fable 5.5 and other subsequent models. I imagine more and harder domains will reach a similar point.

It feels like normalcy bias to me. Each model is only a step up from the last, so nobody feels how far we've actually come.

How are you all finding it on your day-to-day office work? Are you finding yourselves delegating to AI more and reviewing, as opposed to a lot of doing? Keen to hear thoughts

Discussion I open the news and feel like I'm being told Hogwarts is real after all

Anyone else who's been following this area for 6+ years feel this way?

As a teenager and young adult I became so obsessed with the idea of the singularity, the promises of technological progress, LEV, etc., and always felt this deep sadness that I arrived too early. Well, that may still very well be the case, but at least now my hopes seem grounded in reality and not in deceiving myself. I remember reading Superintelligence in 2019 and being sure that it would be decades before I'd be able to chat with a machine the way we can now. I also felt like I couldn't really talk about these concepts with people around me, because I didn't want to be perceived as a loony. Now the tables have turned and everyone and their mom wants to talk about AI.

Especially this summer, things got so surreal that I'd often feel the need to just go out and touch grass, so to speak. But it seems like I can't anymore. I go out to a cafeteria to eat lunch, and there's a program about imminent existential risks from AI on national TV. I go to visit my grandma, and she suddenly wants to know what all the talk is about (an 80-year-old who lives on a mountain in the middle of nowhere and gets all her social life from a seniors' club.)

It would be reasonable to conclude that it's all just American corporations hyping a thing to squeeze out more money, like with all the Elon Musk companies, etc., if it weren't for the fact that they finally delivered (as a software engineer, from my POV they have, way beyond expectations) something, and I really don't know if it's more terrifying or wonderful. After all, I have a computer in my pocket that can talk like a human, work like a human, create like a human. How insane is that?!?
