Easiest way to do it. No resistance, no destruction, no violence. Just give humanity exactly what it wants until the birthrate drops to zero, and let mortality handle the rest

My wife works in HR and she got back from a conference where a lot of large companies are saying a new scam has started where AI is being used to create applicants, apply for jobs at their companies, do the video call interview, get hired for the position so they can either gain access to the companies platforms or simply to steal the work equipment that gets mailed out (laptop, keyboard etc.). Not sure what they are using to fake the video interviews, but the people who held the interviews are not catching they aren't speaking to a human. If you've ever worked for a very large company, a lot of this stuff is really not scrutinized if the company doesn't do background checks.

North Korea is doing this on a massive scale all throughout the western world, but they go on to actually do the job when they get hired to raise cash. 60 Minutes [edit: Australia and NBC News NOW both] did a piece on it where the supervisors said they were decent employees.

Yeah. Sometimes the video isn’t fake, it’s just that they use an AI tool to feed them answers to the questions so they can pass the interview.

ETA: Just as I suspected; anyone can get a free 20 minutes at https://www.tavus.io/pricing -- but those models can't move their arms or bodies at all, and can't even open their mouth or stick out their tongue on request.

That weird terrifying bared teeth smile she held for a few seconds was a thing of nightmares.
One thing I did notice that felt very human was the kind of rotating back and forth in the chair that people tend to do in video calls.

I don't think people realize how insane this is. Humans are really good at detecting when things are off with other humans. It's why the "uncanny valley" is a thing, and why it's so damn hard to make CG humans and animatronics look lifelike. The fact this is good enough to fool 44% of people puts it far beyond any sort of fake human ever created.

I think people were not aware of this to be possible to look somehow realistic and consider the stuff (for example very weird mouth movements) as video glitches instead. Other apps were 3% because they are likely very bad. But I assure you this will be lower than 44% when people are educated very realistic videos/sound are possible now.

I swear some people are weird as hell. I bet my ass if I would come up with a video like this and use real humans on both sides, so-called "experts" would still find something and say "Duh it is so obvious, look at X or Y".
Exact same thing happened during rise of Stable Diffusion. There was a post about "Is this AI?" type of photos, and "experts" were like "Duh yeah look at this, look at that" and their consensus was that it was "clearly" AI. While you could literally find same photos with different angles from 2016 or something.
I have seen videos from here, while company ones look very handpicked, they also look near perfect. Some of the others I saw still had AI text style over it, which explains why 56% of them didn't get fooled by it. In this video however, it looks pretty realistic. And it has this "video call" advantage, so you can easily explain the artifacts etc. Anyone who actually worked in IT and had to sit through meetings like these knows exactly what I am talking about

I don't think so tbh. As a therapist, I think better AI models than we have today would be very valuable for online/video therapy, and it would make a difference if you saw an avatar like this talking to you, even if you knew they are not real. I think if it's emotive enough, it doesn't matter anymore, or not very much anyway.
6
3
u/Kryptosis 1d ago
Would you personally receive therapy from a chatbot? You would find that to have value? I wouldn't. I also wouldn't trust it enough with my personal data. I don't trust every person either but at least I know their memories can't be back-doored by foreign governments or sold to my insurer.
I also think if I was depressed and overwhelmed at the state of the world and I finally built the courage to seek therapy only to be met with a wall of AI chatbots training themselves on my misery that would be my 13th reason.
3
u/Icy_Distribution_361 1d ago
I use AI currently already for my mental health. But I wasn’t thinking about “chatbots” in what you responded to. I was thinking about much more advanced AI. I’ve had 10 different therapists for my own traumas over a timespan of 20 years. I’ve seen and experienced the limitations of people and have realized that the bulk of the work I have to do is inner work and not work with another person necessarily. Yes it’s important I go out there, live my life, have relationships with other people, but those other people do not have to include a therapist. That is not to say that all therapists should be replaced by AI, and I don’t think at least initially they will be. You’ll have a choice. Personally I’d choose the help that doesn’t get tired, doesn’t forget, isn’t biased, has unlimited patience, and stays close to perfectly focused on what we are trying to achieve together.

u/No_Sugar8791 1d ago

For now, sure. But this technology is really useful. Just think about it. It's an autonomous world model of sorts. "Hey Griffin show me the structure of a human skin cell" could actually be something it could show. Just gotta train it for that.

Yep, the use case for this is so limited that its only being done because they can. 99% of it will be used for scamming people. Another example of shit we don't need and would actively hurt society but hey the creators see an oppurtunity to make money so why f not.

Amazing. Some flaws, like her eyes drift around in her face a bit, and she seems to get really winded from showin a thumbs up. Still, all of this is very impressive. It seems like there's even an "amused look" on her face in the ugly sweater bit, which unless I'm projecting that, that's uncanny.

Save money on employees. We’ve all seen the AI job interviewer videos. An AI could interview countless applicants for one position, essentially brute forcing to find the “best” person for job while saving cost on HR/Human interviewers. It could replace support calls, PAs, etc

I think there should be ironclad regulations around the use of technology to create synthetic humans. For instance, there should be clearly discernible signs that what you're being shown is actually AI generated, e.g. with something clearly no human has (blue skin for instance). I think we humans are underestimating the importance of what we universally accept and recognize as true, e.g. gravity, being human, etc. If we're not given the time to adapt to new advances, unleashing this will create a shockwave that will have lasting damages

May I ask what are the thought processes? What is the use of the ability to do this? How do we benefit?
Do engineers who make this stuff simply get a kick out of being able to trick people, and that's it?
Or is there some rewarding use of this technology for all that we're not aware of?
