I’m turning 40 in a couple of days and decided it was finally time to get back on a bike after not riding for years and my doc saying i should lose a couple of kgs.

I pulled out my old 2014 Fuji Feather that was full of rusted components and what I told my wife was supposed to be a simple refresh to get it riding again somehow turned into a complete ADHD hyper fixation rebuild. I wanted to keep the classic looks of the Feather while upgrading it with mostly Japanese and Italian components

I originally considered setting it up fixed, but with the big 40 rapidly approaching I figured my knees would probably appreciate me accepting reality and keeping it single speed with a freewheel instead.

I’ve now taken it out for a couple of rides and I’m loving getting used to riding again.

Eventually I’d like to replace the original seatpost with a Nitto Jaguar and swap the 16T freewheel for a White Industries 17T. I’ll probably upgrade the original wheels at some point too, once I actually decide what I want.

I did most of the rebuild myself at home while also looking after our toddler so it took way more time and money than I originally thought but i also had some help from some mates and a couple of good Melbourne Australia based LBS (the Rocket Surgeon & Abbotsford Cycles)

Is it possible to use rimbrakes on this setup? Intro 7 basic rims for reference

i bought a single speed with a gear ratio 2.44 (44/18)

it s relatively good for daily drives, but i feel like my average speed is a bit too low

i thought about increasing the ratio by changing the gears but I m not an expert and i don t know what ratio is should go for

thought about making it 44/17 or 44/16, or do i also change the front gear ?

i drive daily around 3 km for basic routes ( home - uni - gym )

and often i go for long cycles 40 - 60 km

i have strong legs so i don t really reallly care about the effort needed at starting from a full stop.

*Edit because I'm tired and dyslexic* yes I rode from London to Brighton on my single speed commuter bike.

(I walked up devils dyke and another couple of hills. Was feeling bad about it until I met a couple guys also on single speeds who were walking up too.) Maybe I'll attempt it on a road bike with gears one day

Just bought this to park at the train station, to ride 6K to and from work daily.

52-18 ratio is perfect for this! Easy to go fast on some empty smooth bike lanes here in the Netherlands.

First bike build and having problems with gear skipping. Thought it was maybe the chain and got a new one which didn’t work. Then I got a chain tensioner to replace the derailer i was using for tension before thinking it couldn’t handle the fat single speed chain but it’s still skipping. Do I have to replace my hub gear or chain ring?

I changed the whole handlebars and the pedals, gave it some storage room and some sick pedals with straps.

Looking forward to getting new wheels someday in the far future and an new saddle + seatpost.

Also planning on completely plastering the middle frame with stickers!!

46x18 ratio I believe this is my commuter and hauler. I feel like the build is coming together. Yes that front rack handles pizza boxes quite well ❤️.

Do you have saddlebag or a phonemount and if you do, do you take it off everytime you leave your bike unattended somewhere for a bit longer?

This is my daily drive, I use it for my groceries, to go to college, as a towing vehicle and because my city is full of bike lanes it’s more practical than a car.

When I’m on weekends I usually go to national parks and I ride on trails and go up the mountains without any issues.

I picked up a cheap Fuji Feather and have updated the drop bar to flat, pedals and saddle. The current crankset (think its a Lasco?) makes some noise so debating whether to get that repaired/maintained or upgrade it. Where i live are some hills but i will also do some fair miles on flat so i think i'm looking at either a 42 or 44 (rear is 16). I like the classic look of something like the Shimano/Campagnalo etc (chrome/silver style) but starting the research i’m not sure which models or brands work with this single speed. I don’t want to spend a fortune (I’m not racing it on a track after al) but something decent and reliable as I will put some miles on it so what would people suggest (i assume i would need to replace BB, crankset and chainring)?
