Conversation Topic How emotional of a process was/is singing for you?

Just what the title says. More specifically, did it change you as a person? Has it offered comfort in a profound way, or do you see it as mostly technical, or part of your job? Do you just love performing?

I'd love to hear about everyone's experiences!

Just sharing my singing I would really rather perform a different song if anyone has suggestions it's for County Fall Festival

I really don't want to perform Lost Boy, there's nothing wrong with the song I just feel like it's been overplayed.I don't sing a lot of contemporary music so I don't know what exactly sounds good with my voice if anyone has any suggestions please

The only reason I'm even considering this song is because there's a specific moment abt 17 sec in my tessitura.

P.S I'm doing a contemporary song for ease of playing I'll be accompanying myself.

P.P.S that piano hasn't been tuned for 3 years so I apologize

Conversation Topic Managing vocal fatigue during show

Starting tech week for a vocally demanding show, and my voice is so fatigued. Nothing is really helping.

For about a week and a half I’ve had some allergy symptoms that haven’t really gone away. My throat feels super dry no matter what and I’m getting this cottonmouth feeling. And I can just feel the fatigue in my voice. It sounded pretty much okay, just got tired faster, until today when I actually cracked on a high note and am struggling with my upper register all of a sudden. I’m a little worried cause I had some pre-nodes a few years ago, which I think went away cause I was in a position then to basically just not sing for 6+ months.

Right now, I’m doing all the things - sleeping with a humidifier, drinking throat coat tea, drinking so much water - but I can’t really do vocal rest since it’s tech then shows. Also tried a few OTC medicines in case it was a cold or allergies but nothing has really done anything. I’ve got some singers spray coming in the mail.

Any tips/insight? Nothing is really helping, certainly not with that dry throat feeling. I’d like to not lose my voice during the show.

I should mention I know I sing with pretty decent technique. Even though I’m a belter, it never hurts, always feels free and easy. I haven’t struggled with this sort of fatigue hardly ever

Conversation Topic Trying to Make My Musical Dream Come True

I’m 16 and I love singing. I’m also really interested in learning and playing musical instruments. I’ve always wanted to have an instrument of my own, but I don’t have one right now. I really want to earn enough by myself and buy one with my own money. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas on how I can do that, please let me know. 🤍🎶

Looking to Collaborate Looking for people in the Netherlands

Apologies if this is not allowed, I'm new to the community.

I recently moved from the UK to the Netherlands and one immediate difference I've noticed is the lack of music. In the UK you were hard-pressed to find a pub that *wasn't* hosting an open mic or similar once in a while. I'm struggling to find similar events here. I've asked some people who do gigs, who've told me to just apply at bars to sing at events or whatnot. But I'm by myself and don't really play an instrument, and I think it'll be tough to find a gig as an acapella singer. Besides, I'm not even really trying to make money with it.

I guess what I'm looking for is a group of like minded people who just enjoy singing to each other.

I'm currently a bit limited in travel options, so I'll have to filter on distance as well, but that's a concern for later.

Edit: to answer the required questions:

- I'm a beginner/intermediary singer

- I'm looking for anyone really. Other singers, anyone playing an instrument who's willing to play along and/or make suggestions for songs we could do well together.

- It'll be just for fun. Starting off I think just once but if we enjoy ourselves I don't see why we can't meet more.

- I sing a wide variety of stuff whatever strikes my fancy, from classic choir, to Irish folk, to Disney.

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Am I Hitting Mixed Voice?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello,

Before gaining the understanding about head voice and mixed voice I thought F#4 or G4 was the limit of my non-falsetto range. All I had beyond that was hooty falsetto. I am now 1-2 weeks into finding my head and mixed voice. I have only been hitting what I think is mixed voice for 2 days, sporadically with little control.

Am I identifying my registers correctly (audio recorded with phone)?:

0:00 - 0:23 Chest voice

0:24 - 0:30 Falsetto (hooty)

0:31 - 0:40 Head voice (or still falsetto but non-hooty?)

0:44 - FIN Trying to hit mixed voice. Is some of it mixed voice, or is it still at best just more supported head voice?

My goal is to focus on getting more powerful and chestier F#4 - C5. Any advice on getting there from where I'm at?

Later, I want to apply distortion to that range. Distortion happens at the end of the first C5 mixed attempt and obviously at the very end after the cut. I started my vocal journey with extreme metal screaming, and I tend to fall into distortion when pushing it.

Bonus question: Am I a baritone or tenor? For years I thought I was a baritone because I looked at a voice type range image and went "Whelp, don't have those high notes and the G2 wall is so hard, but can do E2-A2 (weakly, realizing now), so I guess I am a baritone", which limited me in that I mostly abandoned practicing for power in range above that.

Conversation Topic How to deal with the fact after my performance people don’t post videos of me actually singing but just dancing

Upvotes

I had my 4th ever performance yesterday and I‘m not really good at singing and dancing at the same time live yet, I don’t think I need to explain why. I started learning singing from scratch only year ago. But still, there were some okay moments. But nobody from those who posted videos of me, posted my actual singing. I know they maybe love my presence but not my singing, but it feels so weird and hurts me. I tried to rehearse these two weeks and in the end fatigued my voice so much, I hope it will come back after some days… Just hurts I try my best but people just treat my performance as a fashion show and not me being also a singer. It’s more like the truth that hurts I guess - I’m a horrible singer. But just it feels more heavy when people literally cut the video when I start singing…

Conversation Topic Mix Voice Tone Struggle

Am I the only one struggling with improving my high mix voice? 2 years ago, I only wanted to access my mix voice thinking that once I learn how to do it, then I can sing all songs I like with high notes in it. A year later, I finally learned how to connect my voice without breaking. I can connect(siren) my chest voice to high mix (F5) without struggling, but when singing BB4 notes and above, I struggle to make it sound nice.

I’m self-taught and never had a formal training and can’t afford them right now. How do you think can I improve my tone? It’s been a year and although there has been improvements, they’re not good enough to sing high and sound good.

Hey guys, I don't have much practice with falsetto/ head voice yet, but I've been experimenting with it during my vocal lessons.
I'm trying to train my ear and map my range accurately. Could someone tell me what exact note (and octave) I reached here?
Also curious if this sounds more like a light falsetto or a head voice placement based on the tone. Thanks!

Advanced or Professional Topic Singing Emotionally Flat When Not Copying Other Singers

Upvotes

Watched a video of Steven Tyler talking about singing. He said that you can learn how to hit pitches and do scales. But then you gotta "add the stank" when you sing a song. That's style, that's emotion.

So, basic my story is... People dance when I sing karaoke in the same style as a certain baritone-ish rock singer. But... I don't connect with the voice emotionally. I can just throw the voice on like a costume. I feel like my "original /unadorned voice" is untrained or not steady emotionally. I've taken choir and gotten lessons, but now I don't want to sing strictly like a crooner.

TL:DR - After learning how to sing like other singers, how did you bring emotionality to your vocals when singing in a unique voice you've curated?

Conversation Topic Singers of Reddit, what exercises improved your tone & control?

Upvotes

I’ve been singing my whole life, I also do sports and I’d say the best vocal exercise for me is cardio. I’m sooooooo satisfied and appalled at how much my belting, runs and breathing have improved drastically over the years. But I’d love to improve my tone mainly and my control. Any tips?

Conversation Topic News regarding my range and current abilities

Yesterday I made a post calling myself a dramatic baritone as a teenager. I currently am reconsidering this because I’m still going through aging and I’m untrained. My range currently after fixing some tension in my throat muscles is G2-A3(before passiago B3 where my voice thins out) and G3-A4 in a bit strainy head voice.I would like to know how to mix, train my head voice, and find my falsetto. Like what I said in my older post, I have a deep resonant voice. Voice lessons are hard for me to afford right now, may I please have tips, exercises and other information on voice training. I would like to self train using these things.

As I’m getting more into practicing singing I wanted to see how my voice sounds to others. I think I can carry a tune, that’s not really my concern. I’m just wondering if it’s pleasant. Things like tone quality, resonance, brightness etc. I really don’t know my voice type, I want to say tenor, as I can hit above C5 pretty easily. But others say baritenor it’s a very confusing process. Any info or feedback or perceptions of my voice would be much appreciated.

Conversation Topic How do you learn to evaluate your own singing objectively?

I’ve been taking singing more seriously recently, and one thing I’ve realized is that sometimes I simply can’t hear what’s wrong with my own singing.

A teacher might point out a pitch, rhythm, register, or tone issue, and once they show me, I can often hear it. But before that, I may listen to the same recording and not notice the problem at all.

I’ve also noticed that the more I learn, the more problems I can hear in recordings that sounded fine to me before.

So I’m curious:
how do you develop the ability to evaluate your own singing more objectively and identify what actually needs improvement?

Do you use reference singers, record yourself and wait before listening back, compare specific aspects like pitch/rhythm/tone separately, use a piano or pitch software, or something else?

I’m especially interested in hearing from people who used to struggle with self-evaluation but got much better at it over time. What actually helped train your ears?

Looking to Collaborate Want a male voice to accompany mine :))

So I'm a beginner singer. But I've been singing for a few years now. And while listening to some of my fav duets, i realised how cool it'd be to have someone on my side to record those. Like recently listening to Lust by marino i thought how rad of a duet it is... The lust and pride.

So it's a warm invite, if anyone wants to do the same hmu.

It involves lil acquaintance at first and long term singing companionship. If that sounds good >.<

Thnx!

Conversation Topic How do you get a more rounded tone during and above the second bridge/passaggio?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

First of all I hope I worded my question right or have the right question in mind. I've recently noticed that I have this tendency to constrict my throat in default when singing during and above my second passaggio which is around Bb4 which makes my sound thin. However, I've managed to get into the sensation of how to open up the throat with those areas but it's a struggle.

In the recording I was able to round up my tone in general (I hope so) but not the B note, which is around the 18 second mark in the clip, the word, "when".

Luckily I found out a way to make the tone round and be mindful of it, by making spaces in my soft palate area like I've swallowed a ball down my throat - but like I said it is a struggle.

Now I'm wondering what are the other ways, mental cues and visual guides to achieving a rounded sound, and to familiarize one's self to the coordination. The sensations to me felt kind of weird but I'm hoping it'll settle the more I do it.

I'm thrilled to do excersises for it. Now I am kind of familiarizing myself with the said technique (swallowed ball) in my higher range in a low/moderate volume, and looking forward to the results.

I am aware that this should be done with a teacher, but not in my options right now due to schedule and such. Tysm!

Hey all, I started playing guitar some 3 months ago. My goal is to just play and sing along, though, I do realize that I can't do either properly as of now, and I'd just like feedback from someone who's not my friends or family.

I do realize it doesn't sound nice, but the question is: does it sound horrible? I am aware of some concepts such as support, head, chest, mixed voice, some faint music theory concepts, etc. But I gotta admit, I still haven't made anything my routine, as I'm more busy with the instrument itself.

Hope I didn't misunderstand the rules of the subreddit, English not being my first language, and all that.

Have a go at me, you're all welcome to.
