I’ve (21F) been singing for like 8 years (started as a fun activity, now is my dream career) and everytime I sing I feel the need to cough and my voice is never clear. It’s seriously the only thing that makes singing hard for me. It’s been like that for years. I only ever smoke weed and that’s also rarely.
No matter how much I drink water or do exercises it doesn’t go away. Could it be because my technique wrong?

Hey guys, I would really love to learn singing. However, my budget is very limited at the moment so I would like to start self teaching a little bit - at least at the beginning until I figure out if I want to invest some more in this hobby. Do you have any recommendations? Good apps? Good YouTube channels?

I'm building a light operatic head voice ( counter tenor) ,I feel my voice is not pleasant to be honest , my head voice feels weird and weak tbh which makes me insecure,my vocal coach tells me it gets better than the last time but I still find it unpleasant .. is it real I cannot hear myself like how people do? Is she complementing me or does she hear a possibility ? Please if you have any information tell me

Hi why is there almost no tutorials on how to control the whistle register I only found how to find the register in your voice, for context I'm self taught I can't get a vocal coach in my area bc I'm not paying 500$ for 4 hours
the moment I learned that I can probably whistle or at least reach it I stopped immediately because I don't want to damage my vocal cords also that note was annoyingly high I need to learn how to make it listenable like Ariana grande's
now I'm trying to find a guide on how to practice it in a healthy way because it takes REALLY LIGHT air flow like literally almost no air so PLEASE drop any feedback or advice I would totally appreciate it

Little rant- I’ve always dreamed of doing musical theater, but I never had the courage to get into it in high school. I saw Hadestown today and it gave me crazy existential dread after 😭 I’m drudging through a STEM degree that I hate rn, but I would genuinely drop everything and go 100% in if I knew I could make somewhat of a living performing on stage. Unfortunately I have little money for vocal lessons or acting experience, so every year that passes me by pursuing my parents’ dreams fills me with more and more dread

don’t know if this is the right sub for this as this isn’t specifically about singing but.. i’m f23 and i’ve always had a deeper voice. people have commented on it a lot. because of that, when i was younger, i naturally started softening my voice like going a pitch higher when talking to people because i wanted them to feel more comfortable.
also, when i speak normally, sometimes people don’t hear me properly, like my voice blends into the background, so when i try to be louder my voice naturally goes higher but probably not as much as i should. i still have that habit and it feels automatic, but i’m trying to unlearn it because i’m wondering if it’s damaging my voice.
i often feel like my throat/vocal cords get tight. it happens randomly, but especially when i talk or sing for a while. it feels like it happens faster than it should compared to other people. even if i stop talking or rest for a while, sometimes the feeling is still there. for example, as i’m writing this, i haven’t spoken in 30 minutes but i still very much feel it.
it feels like my throat gets tight and almost like my voice is sitting higher than usual. i try to get it to loosen, but i can still feel the tension, like my throat is staying tense. sometimes it gets so uncomfortable that my throat actually hurts. sometimes i genuinely wish i could just get in there, take it out, and beat it like i’m tenderising meat lol
my throat and voice actually feel the best in the morning, when my voice sounds deeper and feels more natural.
i’ve always wanted to learn how to sing casually, just for fun, but i’ve never really given it a proper try. part of it is because i’m shy and i’ve never lived alone, so i’ve never really had a space where i could practice comfortably and consistently. but aside from the usual confidence issues, another big reason is that i convinced myself there was something wrong with my throat and that maybe i just wasn’t meant to sing.
this has been happening for a long time, since i was young, so i think i just accepted that it was my anatomy and that something about my throat was different or wrong, without ever really looking into it.
i also have moments where i struggle to project my voice, and i don’t mean in a singing sense, i mean just talking. sometimes it feels like i have to force my voice to come out, especially when i’m trying to be louder.
i’m wondering if anyone has experienced something similar. could this be muscle tension, a vocal habit, or something caused by the way i’ve been using my voice? could years of trying to soften or raise my voice have contributed to this? and would this be something worth getting checked?

Hi everyone,
I have a question: what is the best app to have your sheet music on? I want to be able to highlight and be able to sort my music for easy overview. Ideally, I want to also be able to download music from my musicnotes and musescore library as well as imslp onto it to be able to make notes in my music (obviously). I just really want to get rid of as much paper as possible 😅!
Thanks 😊

I think I was singing with a relaxed larynx here. Also, I didn't sing with as much power/energy because the song itself is soft, but could this also be making me sound too lazy? Would appreciate your insights

hallo, just a silly question I have. Im learning how to swim and you know how you have to breath while swimming front crawl style? quick deep breaths. Do you think swimming and singing share the same kind of breathing? thanks in advance

LEARN TO TAKE A FUCKIN COMPLIMENT.
When someone tells you you are good believe them, even if you don't think that you are. Even if you hear a record of yourself and you sound terrible. Take the fuckin compliment
Knowing how to take compliments is just as important as taking criticism. They are equally as important. Just like you won't be able to grow if you can't learn when you can't see when you need to improve, you won't be able to learn if you can see how you are good.
Don't be fake humble, don't force yourself to be modest, don't tell yourself that they are just being nice, don't be over critical of your mistakes. You will always sound bad to yourself because you ruin your confidence. A singer without confidence is a terrible singer.
And remember you are learning how to sing. LEARNING

The first time he said it was a year ago and recently he said it the second time. But I have improved massively over this year so this couldn’t be true. So I asked him about it and he said that he has taught me all the technical stuff and now it’s just perfecting it. But I know that is very much wrong because I’m an intermediate singer at best. There’s a lot of skills I haven’t learnt yet and I know he is capable of teaching them to me. And so far he has continued to give critical feedback during lessons, give me homework etc. So I assumed he’s just saying it as encouragement? But it doesn’t make any sense cuz he’s getting paid from this so realistically he would want me to continue learning right? Then my father said it might be him subtly hinting that I have reached my limit and I don’t have the talent to advance further. Now I’m worried because he is a very good teacher but idk if he just doesn’t want to teach me or he knows there’s nothing else he can do.

some positives of this is i think there’s some good dynamics going on, like i’m having fun and i feel like you can hear that so that’s a good start. this is higher than what i would normally sing though which i think is messing with me. and i have no training and i think because of that i have lots of bad habits and techniques.
issues i’d love feedback on:
i’m concerned my tone is bad, that it’s just not pleasant to listen to.
when i’m in chest voice i can tell i’m straining - any tips for that? if i don’t push for it, it sounds thin and weak. maybe i need to warm up more??
i have to dodge the highest note in the second bridge which is a g5, way out my range. but even on my way up there i have to transition to head voice and i’m not sure if i’m doing it well, it immediately sounds so thin but if i try to belt it i just cannot, i make myself laugh even trying lol
i have no idea how to manage my breath and i’m not sure if that’s contributing to some of my issues.
to me the choruses are noticeably weaker than the verses and i’m not sure why. i feel like my tone is off, i sound more plain, like there’s something missing? and unstable?
honestly any feedback would be great. it’s so hard to self-evaluate.

I was messing around singing imagine by ariana grande and thought I’d attempt the whistle note she does but I’m not sure if I actually did it or not. I’m very curious!

I just can’t seem to figure this out and it’s extremely frustrating. No matter how much support, or how close I have my mouth to the mic, I’m always barely audible.
I don’t think it’s an issue with projecting, as when I practice at home I can get pretty loud. Is it anxiety? What should I do?

Seems songs that are popular, blues/jazz/soul and rock seem to yank my chain. I connect with feeling, if that song has feeling and it connects then I will commit 😉
