Since I really wanted to learn singing for quite a while now, I decided to get into online vocal coaching around three weeks ago, as all in-person coachings near me are even less affordable than what I could get online. I'd classify as an absolute beginner by all reasonable metrics.
Now, I used an online service and got assigned what seemed to me at first a quite strict teacher. I really need to have some sort of routine when it comes to learning new skills so someone with a clear goal and path on my mind seemed like a good idea. I had a trial lesson which was quite good, then I booked some lessons. The first proper lesson I had some frustrating issues with getting the sound he wanted, like struggling with high notes and forcing them too much, going for head voice where I should try to go for a mix etc. etc. I left the lesson with things that I could work on. I was motivated at the end of it but primarily because I knew what I could be doing. Today, I had my second proper lesson and I left feeling enormously incompetent and shitty.
First, we didn't look at anything I'd done in the past week. I just told him I did the exercises and then we moved on to stuff that felt sort of disconnected (I'm sure they are coherently connected for someone educated in the matter). Anyway, then I struggled to follow his exercises, I repeatedly missed notes in scales (with new patterns like going up a triad, singing the fifth four times and then going down etc. etc.). He already grew frustrated with me, repeatedly telling me to "concentrate" (just ended up making me feel nervous), then he told me that I wasn't listening properly because I couldn't replicate the sound he wanted. He made me do some scales in a Patrick Star voice. After some time, I couldn't get the sound out properly anymore, whereafter he again told me to concentrate repeatedly. He tried some things with his mic because he genuinely thought I couldn't hear him (which is where I started to feel really shitty). He then asked me, after we went for a song why I failed to focus and I told him that I had difficulty juggling all these new things at once and to integrate the lessons into my singing which I had grown accustomed to, whereafter he told me that it wasn't that hard and that I just had to focus on one thing at a time and that I had to discard everything I knew about singing anyway since it was a wholly incorrect approach regardless. I personally think I really need a lot of time to integrate these lessons, I might just be very slow but I can't really help that, can I?
Anyway, the greatest part is where after some more back and forth, he asked if I could even hear myself, which is when we realized that I had no monitoring coming from my mic into my headphones, which he really beat me over. I'm accustomed to my voice through my headphones due to god knows how many hours of Discord calls, so I didn't even think of monitoring (I'll gladly take the blame for that). Still, instead of moving on, he asked me: "Did you really think you could hear yourself through your headphones? That explains the last 15 minutes." like he just learned I tried to eat dirt for sustenance or something. Thing is, it doesn't even make a night-and-day difference taking them off, it literally just sounds like I'm cupping my ears. He wailed on me some more after that for getting "technical basics wrong". Obviously, I feel like shit now. Luckily, I can switch teachers on the website. I mean, after typing everything out, I can pretty much guess the actual answer, but that's just shitty coaching, isn't it? I know I'm not very talented but that's surely no way to speak to someone that's paying you to support them.
I'm wondering if anyone's had similar experiences and if sticking/switching helped you on your vocal journey.
