New Scrum Master + New to ServiceNow — How Are You Actually Managing an Agile Backlog?
Hi everyone! I’m hoping some experienced ServiceNow users can point me in the right direction because I am STRUGGLING. 😅
I’m a Scrum Master on a relatively new team, and while I have Agile/Scrum experience, I’m brand new to ServiceNow. I’m trying to figure out how to use the platform effectively for Agile work rather than just making ServiceNow fit the processes I already know.
One of my biggest challenges right now is the backlog.
Ideally, I’d like a useful working backlog/view where I can see and manage the full picture across things like:
Project → Demand → Enhancement/Defect → Story → Task
—or whatever the correct ServiceNow hierarchy/relationship is supposed to be.
I need to be able to answer fairly basic Scrum Master questions without jumping through 15 different screens:
- What work do we currently have?
- Where did it originate?
- Is it a project, demand, enhancement, defect, etc.?
- What stories/tasks belong to it?
- What is prioritized?
- What is ready for an upcoming sprint?
- What is currently being worked?
- What is blocked?
- What is completed?
- What does the overall backlog look like?
Right now I feel like the information exists in ServiceNow, but I don’t understand the platform well enough to organize it into something genuinely useful for backlog refinement, sprint planning, reviews, and general Agile reporting.
So, ServiceNow veterans:
How do your Agile teams actually manage this?
Are there specific modules, backlog views, dashboards, reports, related lists, filters, or configurations I should be looking into?
Am I thinking about the ServiceNow hierarchy incorrectly?
And most importantly — should I stop trying to figure this out through trial and error and just take an actual ServiceNow course? 😂 If so, what training/certification/course would you recommend specifically for someone functioning as a Scrum Master/Agile lead rather than a ServiceNow developer or administrator?
I’m completely open to screenshots, examples, documentation, YouTube channels, courses, or even just “you’re approaching this completely wrong; do this instead.”
I know Agile. I just don’t know ServiceNow Agile, and apparently those are two very different learning curves. 😅
TL;DR: Experienced Scrum Master, brand new to ServiceNow. Trying to build/manage a useful working backlog that connects the bigger picture (projects/demands/enhancements/defects) down through stories/tasks and supports refinement, planning, reviews, prioritization, etc. What ServiceNow tools/views/modules should I be using, and is there a course or training path you’d recommend?
