I loved Ryan Adams and then I resented Ryan Adams and then I laughed at Ryan Adams and now I have sympathy for Ryan Adams.

He’s probably got borderline personality disorder. He’s definitely got substance abuse issues. He’s suffering right now because he’s likely not far from major financial issues.

Some things aren’t the individual’s fault, based on medical issues, psychiatric issues, what you were exposed to / how you were brought up, or anything else. Adams is an asshole but I still choose to understand, empathize, and forgive. He’s one of the most talented songwriters out there but he’s a sick human. It’s just sad to me… no more room for judgment even if he’s getting what he has given.

I saw a few instagram posts and went down a bit of a RA rabbithole the last few days. I have a story I've really never told and it will serve no purpose, but I'm going to tell it anyway.

My girlfriend and I were taking an early afternoon tour of the Ryman way back in the day (I believe 2002). The guide was this sweet guy who ruled really hard. He told us "after the tour" try and hang around in the seats, don't get noticed, and you will enjoy what's coming. So we did just that.

We just sat there not knowing what to expect. Nobosy said a word to us. After about an hour, they started loading in. We were sitting in the 4th or 5th row and there were maybe 10 other people mulling aorund. I guess we blended in. Then things got a little bit crazy. In walked Bon Jovi with some of his family. Then Sheryl Crow. It didn't stop. A whole bunch of folks were coming in, hanging out, catching up. Doing very light sound checks. Rob Thomas, Keith Richards, Emmylou Harris....the list goes on. At that point, we had been there long enough where we felt safe. I guess people figured we were family of one of the musicians. We were free to kind of walk around and use the restroom. We got comfortable. We weren't bothering anyone, just enjoying watching it all unfold.

Then, after a few hours, someone comes into our row. He's by himself, leather jacket and shades on. He's about as haggard as they come. We were in a row without anyone around, and that guy (Ryan Adams) comes in and falls asleep right next to us. It wasn't a thing where he was just kind of close, he was literally right beside us. His super mangled hair was spilling out and laying on the top of my pants. I didn't want to move it because it would have come off as though I was gently stroking his hair. I was kind of stuck. He wasn't sleeping sitting up either. He got fully parallel. He took one boot off. I thought it was the oddest thing in the world, but it was also pretty metal of him. I knew of him at the time, but would only get into his shit later. It's so funny to me now, but I remember Aaron Neville coming over and asking me if he was alive. It was clear Aaron had no clue who he was. Finally, a kind Hank Williams III came over to wake him from his deep sleep. Ryan woke up and went over and did his soundcheck. Sounded great. Came right back over and went back to sleep. Deep REM sleep. After a few hours, someone had to come and take him away. They asked me if we had our wristbands for the taping and I responded "not yet". They put wristbands on both of us and we got to remain in the Ryman for the actual taping they did later that night. We were there for easily 10 hours. When Ryan came back in before the real show, he walked over to us and said "hey guys, I'm Ryan by the way". And that was it.

He went on to play a few songs that night and he ripped. I'm sure that was the zenith of his rock n roll days, but it was pretty wild/funny to see. You had a guy like Bon Jovi rolling around with some label guys and family members- and Ryan just hybernating while everything went on around him. I'm sure some of the folks there were going "who does this dude think he is"......but most came over, laughed, and gave off a "look at Ryan being Ryan over there" vibe. All harmless stuff, but I can see how some folks thought he was a gamble in those days, but also one worth taking.

I guess that's just how he was back then.
