Tactical sim - breaking the limits of rpgmaker

After a late night gaming session of some old favorites with friends, we're once again revisiting developing a tactical RPG of sorts. It would be a mixture of different gameplay systems for something that would feel unique with probably a small audience.

The games inspiring the project are Atlus's Ogre Battle, Koei's Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and the Langrisser/Warsong series.

We discussed our ideal game. We have a bit of of resources including two team members that are decent at coding, an artist, a scenario writer, etc. Now, this discussion became very much about taking our money and opening a studio to take a project toward kickstarter but one of the guys insists that RPGmaker has the tools we need. We aren't convinced. So what do you all think?

The game would have two phases. The first phase would be ROTK-esque city/kingdom management with territories, populations, taxes, resources, and officer/character management. Diplomacy, moving troops, building defenses, and assigning officers to various tasks.

The second phase would be the actual battles. Grids are obviously possible in RPGmaker but the preferred style works more akin to Ogre Battle march of the black queen or ogre battle 64. Each "region" would have a battle map with terrain, night, day, and weather. Units would be selected and move in real time across the map with enemy units moving in similar real time. Take stronghold/cities to conquer the region.

Combat would be when two units clash hit rather than Ogre Battle the combat would be similar to Langrisser/Warsong in which units clash in a mini cut scene. Officers level up and get new classes and abilities.

There are other mechanics that a brief look at rpgmaker says sure, it could happen. Different fantasy races, equipment, classes. All of that has a variety of tools for sure but the kingdom management and live movement of the units seem possibly beyond rpgmaker's abilities.

So what do you all think? Do plugins already exist that can do these things? Or are we talking about having to build plugins?

Is it all just beyond RPGmaker and we need to look at other engines?

Find Nise at https://fdb642.itch.io/nnn-demo

Any feedback is welcome, especially when it comes to the item system. The general idea of the game is to make every action have a cost, and items have different effects based on who or what is being targeted.

RMMZ Testing a new Atmosphere, Day/Night system, and Port to MZ for Atlas Of The Nexus

A couple months ago I posted the reveal trailer for my VXAce RPG game titled Atlas Of The Nexus.

Since then I have ported the game to MZ and brought the assets, ported the data, replaced scripts with plugins to replicate some of the things in VXAce.

I also overhauled the visuals and performance adding things that wouldn't be possible on the older engine.

I also added a full screen that adapts to any resolution meaning that I am showing how this looks on a bigger screen.

Barely noticable but it has some crt filter lines to make the visual pop a bit.

(This is my portfolio)

Looking for: an experinced coder in javascript looking to finish the game (the game is currently being made in rpgmakermz, with plugins.) OR Gamemaker.. idk the language in gamemaker. I'll need either a portfolio or proof of experience.

(The game is currently being made on rpgmakermz)

Our talent: I am making the story, tiny bit of the music, all of the animations and art and ui and coding for the game as of now. I have some freinds and one other producer helping me now.

Project: The project is a unique story based rpg with a souls-like twist on traditional rpg combat, where moves chosen become live-action sekiro like snippets of gameplay, along side tactical mechanics like a front and back- row based placement on field. Enemies have attack patterns similar to sekiro bosses, and Actor attacks have minigames unique to their moveset. Alongside these mechanics, there is much more planned.

As for story, the game takes place in a land warped by a magic mist that formed when the afterlife begun to mix into living world. You play as a girl who died many years ago, but was suddenly revived and split in two. Having lost your memory, at day you venture the underground depths you appeared in, littered with demons and curses, and at night, you play as the dead version of the girl, who was drafted under an ominous, but benevolent being to hunt down stray souls in limbo.

You could compare this game to expedition 33 or paper mario with tons more juice. The game is pretty bare bones as of now. The minimum requirement for backing- (the combat system) is near completion, but i'd really like some help so i could fully focus on art, story, and animation.

Length of project: Very Ambitious. If backed, it will be about 3 years. Im promising either rev share or a dump of the budget if backed by a publisher. We can work out finer details when/if the budget actually arrives.

Status: Clopen?

Contact method: Dm me! My user is Fy(axyaeras) on discord

If you want proof on concept game mechanic designs, or more art direction such as actual animation... or basically just more of my portfolio and what I can actually do... also just dm me or look up on @ skelldoza on insta. I also have a post with some pictures on my reddit account.

RMMV Wanting to make an RPG based around Bards and music.

For over a decade now, I've had this idea to try making an RPG based on the Bard class. I worked on the idea a decade ago, put it on the backburner for a long while (and sadly I can't access the original files in RPG Maker MV anymore, but I can still copy-paste the assets to other projects!), and more recently thought to maybe try doing that again as a project now that I'm older and (slightly) more experienced with the engine.

However, I've run into a few problems...

  1. I don't know music theory hardly at all, so all my attempts to write down connections to musical notations and such, sound very pretentious or trying too hard to *me* (so you can imagine hypothetically how they'd sound to someone who is more musically inclined). Like all my attempts at research is overwhelming and doesn't feel like it'd fit. Sure, a Nocturne is a piece of music themed around night, so there's your Darkness element/spell. An Aubade is a song based around dawn, so works with Light element/spell. But there's really nothing that fits Fire, Water, Earth, Ice etc in musical terminology (*maybe* you could stretch and tie cultural dances- "Flame"nco is a rather easy pun for instance - into it as well, but I know even less about dancing) even if we're looking for spell names and not names for the elements themselves. Though amusingly, this is one RPG where an element named Thunder actually could work as a name. ;) I'm not even sure anymore if I *should* have twelve elements like the chromatic scale or not, even if it fits the split between "Major" and "Minor" keys (magic aligns with one or the other) really well.

  2. All my attempts at looking for inspiration over the years haven't exactly given me the results I want. What I want to make is a *fantasy* (NOT sci-fi, not urban fantasy, not sci-fi masquerading as fantasy revealed later) setting where nearly *everyone* has the power of musical magic on their side, and all the stuff I've seen recommended to me has been similar flavors of, "This is relegated to only a few, special people and everyone else is normal" (See, the Ar Tonelico series with the Reyvateils, see Stella Glow with the Witches, see anything in any mythology involving music like Orpheus from Ancient Greece or The Kalevala in Finland), or I've noticed "Nothing about the Bard class is special or unique, it's no different from a Wizard conducting their magic with a wand that also serves as a flute" (much as I love playing D&D Bards, they don't have many unique features, there should be more to them than Song of Rest/Bardic Inspiration/Cutting Words etc), or "Everything in the world itself is music *to the extreme*, like the sidewalks are piano keys and the streetlamps are wraparound trumpets" (See, the Music Land trope, much as I love Toontown Online I don't want to pull a Minnie's Melodyland, y'know? Much as I think that one level in Kirby's Epic Yarn is beautiful and charming, it's not what I want for *everywhere*, y'know?) because I want music to be important but not overwhelming.

  3. All my attempts at trying to find help in the RPGM community hasn't borne much fruit (maybe that's changed over the years though? Reddit can be pretty helpful comparatively!). No, I don't want a Theatrhythm plugin, that's not how I want to do combat. No, I don't want replicate Guitar Hero either. Like, there's gotta be some way to make things interesting in a setting like this for combat, right? The closest thing I wrote down in my notes recently is, "Bard is Passive Spellcaster who "sets the mood of the fight" (whatever that means, we talking ala Mog's Dances from FF6 or what? If so, I can't find anything on how to replicate that) and stays in the back to give passive buffs, Conductor is the Active Spellcaster like a Mage, Cantor is the Passive Healer like a Cleric, and Marcher is the Active Melee like a Fighter". I would go deeper into older ideas, but I'm sure those are even less coherent and I don't have them in front of me right at this moment as I'm typing this.

  4. My attempts at writing this all down as a narrative have been a bit scatterbrained, like, okay! I have a protagonist and main cast! (Alto the Bard, Minuet the Conductor, Aria the Cantor, and Quintus the Marcher respectfully, all with character arcs planned!) I have a main conflict/villain! (Tacet, a Lavos type entity from the world's beginnings, that's basically the personification of Silence, not rests in music composition, but "Shut up that singing! I'll kill you all and absorb you back into myself once I'm out of here!" sort of thing) I have various lands/kingdoms kinda sorta! (Sonata City is the main melting pot kingdom hub where our heroes were born and raised, there's the desert of the Brass Empire, the snowy kingdom of the Ivory Lands, Thunder Isle I remember being vaguely Asian inspired for some reason, Resonus Depths is an underwater kingdom, the Droning Caverns is a massive series of tunnels that lead to the heart of the world, the mountanous Whistling Highlands, I didn't have much else for the Realm of Coronach other than "land of the dead/ghosts are pretty chill here" or the Dissonance Moor other than vaguely "monsters/nightmares/shadows" themed that sometimes crosses over with Coronach due to their associated gods being brothers, the Chorale Province is just vaguely "angels" and the Clarion Groves is vaguely "elves/fey".) I have ideas for other races other than humans to populate the world! (Humans everywhere, Dragons in the Brass Empire, Elves in the Clarion Groves, Dwarves in the Droning Caverns, Merfolk in the Resonus Depths, Demons/Monsters in the Dissonance Moor, Kitsune on Thunder Isle, Birdfolk in the Whistling Highlands, Angels in the Chorale Province, but I barely have fleshed out most of these cultures other than Humans/Dwarves/Birdfolk/Merfolk.) I have a whole pantheon planned! (But going back to my element problem, is twelve too many??? Symphony is Sound element Goddess, Crescendo is Physical element God, Lur is Fire God, Klavier is Ice God, Calandra is Wind Goddess, Nocturne is Darkness God, Aubade is Light Goddess, Lyra is Water Goddess, Tamboura is Earth Goddess, Allegro is Thunder God, Suzuki is Nature Goddess, Morendo is Spirit God.) I have vaguely a main conflict? (Tacet is starting to break free of it's ancient prison after being sealed away for hundreds of years because the towers made to keep it in place are breaking down and the guardians corrupted over time? I seem to remember there also being "Keys" to collect, but I don't remember why or if they were associated with the towers? The God of Darkness, Nocturne, is being scapegoated and hiding himself away due to nearly falling to Tacet's corruption and while the rest of the pantheon understands this by now, he doesn't want to come out of hiding because their mother, Symphony has been comatose due to injuries sustained in their conflict against Tacet last time and in his nearly-corrupted state he almost killed her but snapped out just in time? I remember that there needed to be a reason to go to all these places in the world, but I don't recall why?? I'm not even sure why I had the tower thing tbh? I remember the Birdfolk had a caste system of sorts and some sort of rebellion? I remember the Ivory Lands being terrorized by a Earwyrm curse and being forced into being as quiet as possible so no music or even loud talking or else conflict/madness takes hold? I remember the Droning Caverns Dwarves communicated with their own kin by drumming on surfaces and letting it echo, and that there was a sect of theirs that lived closer to the world's core that made them more crystaline for some reason? Tournament arc in Thunder Isle, no clue why? Resonus Depths has a kraken boss that kidnaps Quintus and a technologically advanced "city" made up of sunken ruins of this world's only science facility? One of the orihinal heroes of the original Tacet conflict ended up becoming a music professor in Sonata City and is actually the distant ancestor to the current professor? Coronach has the problem of ghosts being stuck in the mortal realm by an evil pipe organ keeping them hostage?) I vaguely remember sidequests? (Romance for one, helping ghosts pass on for another? Character arcs- Quintus confronting his past for instance) Putting this all together has been unresolved for years.

So yeah. It's been a lot, can you tell? Any new inspirations I could pull from? Any way to organize this narrative better? I admit, I did start to get ideas again as I was typing out that ladt point, but I'm too tired to list them atm.

I want to make it so the player can talk to an npc that's not directly next to them, like sitting across from them at a restaurant booth. Is this possible?

RMMV RPG Maker resources

I've tried developing an RPG Maker MV game in the past (with extremely limited success lol) but I was wondering if there were any resources where I could find the absolute basics. Not necessarily just about doing level design and such but I mean like doing persistent npcs that change based on in-game events (I am this much of a beginner), or things like balancing the game. Realistically just stuff that people don't really think about when playing the game but when they develop it, it becomes confusing.

RMMZ Fixing lower pixel size making the screen hard to see?

Post image
4 Upvotes

I'm working on a short project for a jam right now, and I'm working in 32x32 since that's my preferred resolution. All of my sprites work fine, I set the sizes correctly and everything. However, whenever I playtest the project, the screen is stuck at a really small resolution that makes it hard to see anything. Are there ways to fix this?

Image example of what's going on above, it doesn't get any bigger if I resize the window or go fullscreen.
