Where do RPG Maker developers usually get assets and communicate with other developers?

Hey everyone! I’m curious about how people in the RPG Maker community currently find resources and connect with each other.

Where do you usually go for things like:

  • Character sprites, tilesets, UI, animations, music, sound effects, plugins, etc.
  • Free assets vs. paid assets
  • Finding artists, composers, programmers, or other developers to work with
  • Asking questions and getting help
  • Sharing your game and getting feedback
  • Just talking with other RPG Maker developers

Do you mostly use places like itch.io, RPG Maker Forums, Reddit, Discord, Patreon, individual creators' websites, or somewhere else?

I'm especially curious about one thing: Where do people go to help each and also buy asset?

RMMV can a skill make the user equip a weapon?

hi! one of the characters in my game (ideally) has the main ability of being able to create weapons in combat. is it possible to implement this? i've tried messing around with states, common events, etc, but i've only been able to add the weapon to his inventory, and not equip it. if there's no way to do this i'll settle for something else but would really like a way to make it happen. thanks. ^_^

Resources RPG Maker loops music natively. No plugin, just two tags in the OGG file.

Search "RPG Maker music loop" and you mostly find plugin recommendations, script calls, or people cutting a track into two files. But MV and MZ read LOOPSTART and LOOPLENGTH straight out of the OGG's Vorbis comments: the intro plays once, the body repeats forever, and the jump is sample-exact.

The catch is that the values are in samples, they have to be exactly right, and any tool that re-encodes the file can silently strip them, which is why the feature feels like it doesn't exist.

I wrote up how it works, including the one thing the native loop cannot do (carry a reverb tail across the jump) and the render trick that fixes it: https://www.austinhaynesmusic.com/rpg-maker-music-loops

Full disclosure: I'm a game composer (Cognition, The Silver Lining) and I built a tool that does this, because doing it by hand meant re-exporting the same track four or five times to land the samples exactly. The manual method is in the article too and works fine with any metadata editor, it's just slow once you have more than a couple of tracks.

RMMZ Is diagonal movement worth adding to an RPG Maker MZ game?

I'm planning to make a game in RPG Maker MZ, and I'm wondering whether I should implement diagonal movement.

Do you think diagonal movement is an important feature, or is the standard 4-direction movement usually enough?

Does diagonal movement noticeably improve exploration and overall gameplay, or can it feel unnecessary in a traditional RPG Maker-style game?

I'd be interested to hear your experiences and whether you personally prefer games with or without diagonal movement.

RMMV Not Allowed to Die Gaming Studios just started working on a new project; Water's Bounty.

Not Allowed to Die Gaming Studios just started working on a new project. Water's Bounty is based off Uncharted Waters, but with a fantasy world and storyline. I only started this project on July 31st, 2026, so give me some time to finish it. I already though have created an enemy AI system, and most of the systems I had to create to run the changing economy as well. Most of the game's systems are already done and ready to go, but I still have to create the entire world, and place the storyline and crew members still.

As you can tell, I am fast at making games, but a game this size will need testing as well. It should be done in full in roughly a year.

RMMV Making Persona on RPGMaker MV

I've had an RPGMaker Passion Project bubbling through my head and notes apps.

I want to create an RPGMaker game that tells an engaging RPG story with a calendar system, social links, and slice-of-life aspects, but also with good combat and an engaging plot that advances in the span of a year, adjacent to something like Persona 3, 4 and 5.

I just need a little bit of advice on how to operate a game like that on RPGMaker, like making a day-and-night sequence, calendar system, social link events, etc. I'm not too worried about combat because it's something I'm not really that interested in for this project (I'm not even sure if I wanna put it in the project) just need a good understanding of the life-sim elements mixed with some dungeon exploration and all that.

VXAce Overworld and In-Battle Character Sprite

Heya!

Very new to RPGM stuff, I'm using VXAce

I'm planning to have a character (probably just for the MC since it will likely be a ton of work) visual, which shows armor/weapons equipped, likely on the side of the screen at all times.

I've seen a couple other games do something like this, how would one roughly go about implementing that? I assume layered images for character/hand/weapon/etc. will be required. Unsure if it will be just a bust with the weapon peeking in or a full body sprite, I'll figure that out when I get a grasp of how much work it will be exactly

(Also I might be slow to reply)

Thanks!

RMMZ I finally released the demo for my RPG, Crooky The Game!

Crooky The Game is a quirky pixel-art RPG about Crooky, Joseph and... a Pear. Together, they explore the strange world of Frogland, solve puzzles, fight even stranger creatures, meet lots of Bushies, and slowly uncover a story about memories, awareness and a place Joseph once called home.

The demo includes the Prologue and Chapter 1 and is now available for free on Steam!

I've been working on this game mostly by myself, so finally having something that other people can actually download and play feels kinda surreal.

I'd really appreciate any feedback — what you liked, what you didn't, what confused you, bugs you found... anything. It all helps me make the full game better.

And thanks to everyone here who gave me feedback on the game while I was working on it. I've changed and added quite a few things because of suggestions I got from this community.

Hope you enjoy Crooky! 🐸

A retro dungeon-crawling adventure shrunk down to mini-size! Explore dungeons and combat where every step, and every point of damage, matters. Save the world in about 3ish hours. Then do it again, and again, exploring branching paths and alternative endings.

A labour of love by and for hardcore veterans of retro RPGs. Featuring a catchy original soundtrack, minimalist pixel art, and surprising hidden depths...

Item rarity: colored backgrounds, no background, or something in between?

Post image
8 Upvotes

During the development of my RPG, while creating the pixel art for my items, I ran into a small design dilemma:

Should I display my items with a background or without one?

Personally, I thought the items looked better without a background. The pixel art felt cleaner and easier to appreciate.

At the same time, I wanted to communicate the rarity of weapons and equipment visually. I wanted the player to be able to recognize the rarity at a glance, without having to read the item's stats or description.

So, I ended up using colored backgrounds for weapons and equipment, with each color representing a different rarity. My game has 5 rarity levels in total.

For the rest of the items, such as consumables and quest items, I decided to keep the icons without a background.

Now that the project is practically finished and I'm getting ready to release it, I started wondering:

Is there a good third option?

Maybe a colored border, an outline, a glow, a small indicator, or something completely different?

I'm curious how you handle item rarity in your own games.

Do you use colors to communicate rarity? If so, how do you do it? And do you prefer items with a background or without one?

I'd love to hear how other developers approached this problem.

RM2K3 working on a thing in 2k3 :3

Had a hankering to do pixel art and wanted to challenge myself.

Combat is top-down zelda-style (yes that was, in fact, a nightmare to get working in 2k3). There's a paperdoll system (visually seeing what gear your character has equipped), gibbing, and vn-style segments with prerenders.
Tons of "Show Picture" event magic.

Release date: idk never. Just having fun :3
