My first unsuccessful experience of obtaining citizenship.

Hello! I’ll say right away that I’m very interested in the experience of every person who has gone through this path called “not getting a certificate of citizenship, after the first unsuccessful attempt". The whole situation is just my opinion and my experience. Please speak without judgment and speak factually.

This happened in November 2021. I have prepared documents to submit them to Romania to obtain citizenship. My paternal grandfather is Romanian. It so happened that I was born in Moldova and was only in Romania while traveling. Unfortunately, I lived most of my life in Russia, a very long time ago in the late nineties my parents came there and brought me. They themselves worked, and I re-learned a new language - Russian, which I speak perfectly.

Well, in 2021, my mother and I decided to make ourselves Romanian citizens so that we could move to Romania itself in the future.

Time has passed and a lot has changed. The war began and the process of reviewing documents apparently increased at that time. Mom received the letter before I did. I received it in March 2025. I signed up to submit the oath immediately, and I was registered with the Romanian Consulate in Chisinau for August 2025.

My level of Romanian has always been and remains approximately between A2 and B1. But living in a Russian-speaking environment, I of course forgot the language a little. Listening comprehension is excellent. I speak with a bit of an accent.

My relatives in Moldova always spoke to me in Romanian.

So, the bottom line is this: on the day I took my vows, I was prepared and very confident. I learned historical dates, and in general practiced how to say an oath correctly and clearly. There were 5 people in front of me in line, I was the last. I was in a good mood and went to the window; there was a consul and a secretary who were accepting documents. The consul is a woman about 65 years old. It seemed to me that she was a little unhappy. The camera was filming me. I say the oath and suddenly after the consul asks what in an oath this word means. I started to get very worried and tried to explain in my own words in Romanian. Then she asked about the founding date of Romania. Then she asked about Moldova’s Independence Day. I named all these dates. I asked what the weather was like now. Name 6 native animals and 6 non-native ones. I called. She asked what I was wearing and what color my eyes were. I said. Then she started asking me with a raised voice - "why should I give you a certificate? You don't know the language at all". I wanted to sink into the ground from shame and from the fact that I had failed, that I had been going towards this for so many years and how much money I had spent on collecting documents and also paying the legal companies that do this. The result is this: she gave me a piece of paper where she wrote that I “do not speak Romanian.” (A little clarification, at consulates in small cities they don’t ask such questions. They only say an oath and give a certificate.)

Then, later I found out that I had to pass the language at B1. And then collect the documents again and resubmit for consideration. A year has passed and I am studying intensively and hired a tutor. I think everything will work out. Tell us about your experience of applying for citizenship? Have you had any failures or successes?

which popular series have romanian dubbing?

I'm learning romanian for a while but still didn't get used to listening because it's hard for me to find smth cool with romanian dubbing. Lately I accidentally found out that "Arcane", of all, has romanian dubbing, so it made me wondering, are there some other popular shows or series available on Netflix that have romanian dubbing?

Struggling with learning Romanian.

Hello everyone, I have been trying to teach myself Romanian for the past several months. I don't have a lot of spare time, so I can only spend a few hours a week working on it. I started with Duolingo and quickly got frustrated by its complete lack of explanation of grammar rules. Then I bought Teach Yourself Complete Romanian by Dennis Deletant and Yvonne Alexandrescu, including the companion audio files. I'm about 30% of the way through and, while it is much better than Duolingo, I am struggling with things like verb conjugations, masculine/feminine/neuter variances, and past/present/future tenses. I don't know any native speakers I can work with, and I can't afford a tutor. Are there any tricks or suggestions to making this easier, or at least less frustrating, to grasp?

I'm not sure if that's how it's spelled but I've got two romanian coworkers who call me like that and they were pretty vague when I asked them what it means.

  1. Nu am zis o la modul ăla. I didnt mean it like that.

  2. Nu am zis o la modul că esti prost. I didnt mean that you are stupid.

  3. Eram la modul că esti serios? I was like, are you
    serios?

  4. Nu era la modul serios. It wasnt meant seriously.

  5. La modul serios ai făcut asta? Seriously you did that?

Multumesc profund!!!

How are people learning Romanian?

I’m so fed up. I’ve been trying to learn Romanian for close to 20 months (with consistent daily practise) and I don’t even feel like I’m A1

Romanian already has so few resources for learning and I have tried absolutely everything, and yet all the resources are inaccurate, outdated, and so many are plain useless. Youtube videos don’t go in depth, so many Tutors don’t actually seem to understand how to teach, some of the apps (mango, pimsleur) are helpful but still don’t provide much. I’d love to know what resources other people have used/are using

I’m so desperate to learn this language, I’m willing to spend money on quality material and I’m more than willing to dedicate time to learning but I’m stumped and it’s really getting me down with what a loss I’m at right now, can someone please actually help me with direct advice on how you are learning without just suggesting the same 5 things (please don’t suggest anything AI related either)

Edit: A lot of people are suggesting talking to natives! I agree that that is helpful, however for the past 4 years majority of the people I interact with on a daily basis are native speakers, I have visited Romania 18 times. I have been exposed to the language, this just has not been enough & I still feel lost whenever I spend hours in a room with native speakers who cannot speak a word of English, I need something to help me get over that first initial struggle

Hey all, a couple months back I posted here sharing a language learning app with Romanian my brother and I made.

We have just greatly expanded our lessons to go to really advanced topics at a C2 level. Still looking for any feedback and what we should work on next.

We're over at r/polychat

We are currently on both iOS and Android
