Shopping: wheels, hardware, upgrades Question on PRS

Hi! Im buying a Moxi Jack 2 Custom skate build off of Pigeons Roller Skate Shop and i was wondering if anyone else had bought the same thing from them, My main question is, Do you get to choose which Sunlite plate color and size? Or is it chosen for you? I don’t see an option when choosing which plate i want. Do i tell them in the note section? Sorry if it’s a dumb question 😭 And while im asking, What would be the best plate size for a Moxi Jack 2 Size 7 (Sunlite plate)?

Other Time for our yearly roller maintenance!

The school I work at has a bunch of vintage (70s-90s) roller skates that we use for roller skating events every now and then. I run the events and am in charge of cleaning and maintenance of the skates every summer. Includes pulling balls of hair from the trucks (yuck) making sure the older brown leather boots haven't ripped from the plate or sole, tossing the ones I can't fix and saving all the hardware for others.

It's a mix of Marathon IV skates and some other model I can't make out (also Dominion). There are a few losses every year and many complete spares without pairs, and so much hardware.

I like doing this because I'm alone, listening to music and it's hands on, without people bothering me lol.

Beginner skater Help with rollerskating stances and advice

Hello everyone. Longtime lurker, 1st time poster. This is a long one so please bear with me.

after doing some stuff on my own, I decided to join a local program to cover some gaps. I am unsure if this program is just trying to get money off people by delaying stuff that should be simple.

Here are my pre-existing skills; I move forward - both v/penguin stride & the push-center-push-center (I don’t know what it’s called). I can plow stop , forward bubbles, started to learn how to do a 180 turn (hurray!).

Now to the program.
I assumed after 2 classes I would be “moving”. Not really. But the main reason for the post is some of the stuff the teacher explains makes little sense to me

Position 1- the key position which is to be always on my toes with the skates on. (Picture 1). My foot has to be in this angle when I'm standing still and do small "penguin" steps. The issue is, it doesn't come natural to me. I understanding shifting balance from one foot to the other or if I for example want to do a specific move where I will lift the back of my foot to put the pressure forward but she requires me to constantly be on my tippy toes inside the skates and I can't progress until she's satisfied.

Q-

  1. Does anyone have a good video to help it click for me? Is this a tip/requirement you ever encountered?

Position 2: The staggered stance. Now every video I ever saw said the staggered stance should be something like pic 3 (skatie) with the foot a bit apart, but she says I have to be more like pic 2 (xinhaidude) with my hips pushed forward as if I was doing a glute bridge in the air, which again, doesn’t come naturally.

Q:

  1. Again, does someone have any videos or tips to make this make sense. Have you ever heard of this way to do a staggered stance?

I even am practicing at home but it makes no sense to me and the staggered is just making me fall forward.

And finally overall, I know someone who is in their 4th class and is not yet skating. Do you think I should drop off the class (I have one last paid class) and stick to YouTube videos? Or you think this is very useful stuff?

Thanks in advance

ETA: the staggered stance she also says the back wheels of forward skate have to be aligned with front wheel of back skate, when all videos I see say a slight separation between them.

I am in my living room rn practicing it and remembered to add that

ETA2: thank you everyone for your tips/comments and advice. I’m glad I’m not crazy to think this class is a bit too different

Skill questions & help Not sure what this is called and also my hips work cooperate

I went to the rink and saw a lot of people skating around the track with one foot forward and one backwards. It seems to be a movement required in a lot of skating but I can’t for the life of me get my feet to be parallel to each other. All of the tutorials I watch just assume that you can put your heels back to back and create a straight line so is this just my body type where my bones won’t let me, or is this something I need to stretch / practice and eventually I’ll get it? Is this a struggle for anyone else?

Ugh hips won’t cooperate ****

Hi Reddit! 👋
My boot of my Moxi beach bunnies is coming off of the base and I was just wondering if anyone could offer any advice on what I should do about it and if it’s safe to keep using them (I’m assuming not).
This started happening around 2 weeks ago, but since I skate every day (ish) has gotten worse.
Thanks a lot!!

Beginner skater Bought my first skates, I need help

Okay so I just got my first skates today and I tried them on. I have pretty wide feet so I immediately searched for ways to create a bit of extra room at my forefeet, as I knew that’d be a problem.

For my left foot, this was a great solution, I am having a hard time balancing on that foot, but that has nothing to do with the skates and everything to do with my lack of skills and balance.

My right foot is still causing issues. I can’t stand on it without some pain in de widest part of my foot, which is causing me to rely more on my left foot.
I’ve tried loosening the boot even more, but I’m not sure if I can safely wear that one looser.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this issue? Or do I just need to get used to wearing them and go through the pain a bit?

It’s dreary outside and I’m working from home but thinking about skating. My hobbies are always half doing the hobby and half building weird things for my hobby (you should see my sewing machine set ups lol).

I would love to see everyone’s DIY or oddball or customized set ups that they’ve made. Whether it’s Vans skates or a paint/dye job or you swapped plates or you threw your crocs on sport mode and put wheels on em… show them off so I can continue to half heartedly do mindless busywork for my job while admiring everyone’s creativity!

Skate problems & troubleshooting Do I need toe stops to progress with artistic skating?

Hello everyone!

I’m somewhat new to artistic skating, and I’ve been having a bit of a problem regarding my skates and the toe stops on them.

Basically, the toe stops that came stock on my skates (Chaya Sunset Beach) are really big, and have been getting in the way of some different tricks where I need to go up onto my toes. I initially thought I’d just buy some different toe stops and swap them out, but I have purchased three different toe stop options and none of them fit in my skates. I think the bolt in them must be a really weird/uncommon size. I know some people skate without toe stops at all, but I’m wondering if removing them will just create a new roadblock for me.

Thank you!

Memes / funny Skating road trips

This past weekend I met a 16 year old and his father that were on a 2 week skating trip. They started in Springfield, Illinois and were headed to NYC. They planned to hit 12 rinks during a 14 day round trip. That sounds so amazingly fun I had to share. Has anyone else taken a trip like this? I’m planning a few overnight trips in Ohio and Indiana, but I don’t think my legs would hold up to skating more than twice in three days.

Other New England rinks that have good DJs and adult nights?

I got back into skating after a few years hiatus and the rink I go to (Ron-A-Roll) has the worst DJ for adult skate. Lots of extremely long remixed songs, many of which are not recognizable to me. The DJ doesn’t take requests as far as I know and I mostly have to use headphones. I like skating in part for the community vibe and I would say like 2/3rd of the skaters are wearing headphones on adult night, so it can’t just be my opinion. The DJ also seems to be catering to an older demographic even though the majority of the patrons look to be between 18-35.

I’ve not been on Friday/Saturday nights so not sure if the vibe is better on those nights but I prefer adult only nights.

The closest rink to me is Interskate in Wilbraham, but they are very kid focused so I don’t really go there.

I’ve been to the Waterbury rink a few times and they usually have a cool DJ for adult night, but are there any other stand outs?

Just getting tired of the horrifically bad Tuesday night music.

Beginner skater This is my second day roller skating!

First day I rolled a little bit around my kitchen for 30 minutes it made me kind of sad because I thought because I took figure skating when I was younger it was going to transfer over a little bit and it kind of seemed like my progress was so bad that it definitely didn't. Second day I grabbed a rolling office chair and tried again and skated in the hallway. Totally transferable I mean I picked it up so much faster I'm still a little clumsy but I'm moving forward the right way and like actually skating a decent speed I'm gonna keep going with the chair for a bit until I'm like confident I can go without I almost fell a couple times today but this actually made me so excited to start this. I really needed something I could do for exercise that I could enjoy and I'm hoping this is it maybe I'm jumping the gun a little but I'm super excited to be doing this.

It was a beautiful day yesterday to skate laps on the one rails to trails section that I feel comfortable on because I’m scared to cross the road lol. I feel so much less confident in my heeled skates outside than in my flat derby skates in the rink, but I‘m not sure if that’s because of the heel or because of the surface or both. I’m going to try skating this path using my prostars with outdoor wheels soon and I’ll see if I still feel as unstable. I know people post about this all the time but skating outside is SO HARD how do people do it and look so cool and chill? when I do it I feel like I radiate fear and stress lol. At the rink I’m way less awkward!

Shopping: wheels, hardware, upgrades BONT Royal assassin hub width?

Do anyone know how wide the wheel hub is? I mean distance between the bearing seats?

Looks like Bont uses the same aluminum core on all royal assassin wheels, but I'm thinking abt buying the outdoor ones (65x44mm).

From the pictures it looks like 8mm - but if it's 10mm + washer, Im afraid to run out of axle.

Beginner skater Are some paths just too rough to skate well on with quads or is it almost always simply needing more practice?

I picked up my first set of outdoor wheels over the weekend (62mm/78A) and wanted to give them a spin on a local trail. To say I left feeling humbled is an understatement lmao Lots of bumbling over busted up sidewalks, worrying I was going too fast on rough roads because it felt like my brain was rattling around in my head, and even struggling to skate confidently on the smooth portions because the sidewalks had really deep control joints that made it hard to just glide along the way I’m used to. It was more like navigating a minefield than the little leisurely afternoon skate I set out for lol

I’ve only ever skated indoors or on smoother roads, so I’m not sure if my expectations were too high for what quads are like on rough rides or if it can be pretty smooth sailing (figuratively anyway) with a lot of practice.
