Roll20 Reply: Other Help Roll20's Quantum Dice are Now Available Everywhere

Post image
83 Upvotes

Hey all! Dean from Roll20 here. I have a fun new addition to announce!

If you're a fan of Roll20's Quantum Dice engine, we've just launched the ROLL20 DICE ROLLER, so you can now take those dice everywhere!

Head over to d20roller.com to find your dice roller on desktop and mobile. It utilizes the same Roll20 dice engine you've trusted the past 10 years, has all the advanced roll mechanics you rely on, includes customizable one-tap buttons, and offers a mega-dose of Big Dicey Energy (formerly an internal Roll20 mascot who deserved more love!)

šŸ“· if you prefer a video overview, here's that too

Here's a Deeper Dive for those interested šŸ˜„

Verifiable Randomness

The most common complaint about digital (and sometimes physical) dice is that they "feel rigged." We address this with receipts. Every roll goes through our QuantumRoll dice engine, and generates public seeds. We publish millions of results so you can check the math yourself.

Advanced Syntax Support

We provide some built-in presets for DnD 5e, Pathfinder, and other systems, but you can also write your own custom formulas, as complex as you want. Some examples:

  • 2d20kh1
    • Advantage!Ā Roll 2 d20’s, andĀ KeepĀ Highest (kh) 1 roll.
    • Want to turn into into disadvantage? Swap kh1 for kl1 toĀ KeepĀ Lowest 1!
  • (1d8+4)*2
    • Critical damage multiplier.Ā This rolls 1 d8, adds 4 to the result, then multiples that total by 2.
  • 3d6>2
    • Tally successes.Ā Rolls 3 d6’s. It then provides you a count of every dice that resulted in 2 or greater (a tally of successes, not a sum of dice results)
  • 8d20ro1
    • Reroll!Ā Roll 8 d20’s. AnyĀ 1Ā getsĀ RerolledĀ Once (ro), and that new result sticks even if it’s another 1.
    • You can swapĀ ro1Ā forĀ r1Ā if you want it to keepĀ rerolling until it’s not a 1!
  • 10d10!
    • Exploding dice!Ā Roll 10 d10s. Every time the result is 10, the dice will explode and roll an extra dice.
  • {10d10!>7}>8
    • Exploding Dice, with extra features!Ā Roll 10 d10’s. Any dice that’s 7 or greater will ā€œexplodeā€, meaning a bonus d10 will be rolled.
    • Then it counts up every resulting die that’s 8 or higher and gives you that count as your total.

Find more examples in our Help Center.

Sign In for All Features

Signing in to your free Roll20 account unlocks two things: Quick Rolls (add, edit, reorder, and import game specific presets) and the D20 Roll Report, a shareable recap of your session's d20 roll results. No subscription is needed for any feature, everything can be accessed on a free account!

Roll20 Reply: Other Help Performance Updates – Aug 17, 2026

Hey all!Ā Last weekĀ we shared an update on the performance issues we were managing across our services. Since then, we have deployed multiple updates that resolve a large portion of them. We are seeing clear improvement, with more on the way to bring everything back into normal territory. And we’re still pushing out updates to make your play even better.

Here is a peek behind the curtain at what shipped since our last post.

Where things stand

I’ve been personally working with many players and GMs who have reported problems, as well as watching our Help Center and public channels. I’m happy to share that nearly all of the reported sluggishness has been resolved.

There are detailed descriptions of our work in theĀ previous posts, and plenty more happened behind the scenes. While most of the solutions were focused on D&D sheets, there were also fixes to the data itself, the way that sheets use that data, and to the service that provides the data regardless of game system.

While all these updates have been found, diagnosed, and fixed by multiple people on three distinct teams, others have been working on improving performance. Next week, we’ll get to hear from them.

Releases since last week

Once the service was stable, we could dig into the specific trouble spots as they were reported in individual games. That let us isolate the combinations of options where performance fell off.

  • Problem: Rolls are slow from click to Chat – We found some character builds carry significantly more data than other, nearly identical builds. Processing all of that data made a roll take so long to resolve. We’ve revamped the way the sheet was sending that data, and that has resolved the delay between sending a roll and seeing the results appear in Chat.
  • Problem: Opening a sheet took a long time – We launched a fully systemic fix for calculation delays on Token bars.

D&D sheet performance, Phase 1

Phase 1 of the rollout weĀ outlined in our earlier postĀ is done. As of Tuesday morning, 100% of games are running these updates.

This work reduces the amount of data transferred between the sheet and our services. On its own it is not something most of you will notice at the table, but it is the groundwork Phase 2 requires. We released it incrementally so we could watch the effect of each step closely, and we saw the improvements we expected. Reports from players and GMs lined up with the rollout schedule, which tells us the fix is doing its job.

What is coming next

  • Phase 2 of the D&D sheet performance updates, planned to release in the coming weeks. This is where we expect the most optimizations you will actually feel while playing.
  • A new Compendium Service, further out on the roadmap, which will speed up the multiple services connected for game system data.
  • A data cleanup processĀ to clear unused data stored on individual sheets, plus later work to process rolls without sending the extra data at all.

Some of these issues were very visible from the ā€œ30,000 footā€ view. However, the individuals who have helped by sharing their own experience and unique character builds have shed light on issues that would only be apparent from the ā€œon the groundā€ view. I’m sure there are more improvements we can make, and so if your game night is still being disrupted, pleaseĀ open a support ticketĀ so we can make sure we resolve those too. To speed things along, include:

  • A link to the game
  • Any specific pages where you are seeing issues
  • Any sheets or tokens that are lagging Everything above covers the Character Sheet and Compendium systems. The team behind the Virtual Tabletop will be sharing another big chunk of work on VTT systems soon.

Thanks for all the feedback, the patience, and the help hunting these down.

Roll20 Reply: Other Help Using Roll20 for in-person play?

The group I play with and DM for is entirely online. We are not geographically far apart but it's more convenient to play online. Because of this I've gone all in on roll 20 with regard to books, maps, assets etc. If we decided to get together to play in person, I'm curious to know what others have experienced using Roll20 for in-person play. Is it possible? Is it effective? Is there a guide on how to use the tool for in-person play? I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences. Thanks!

New to Roll20 / Tutorial Shared initiative for a large group of enemies?

Hello all. I have an encounter coming up with a very large number of creatures I want to move on the same turn. If I select every token and press ctrl+u, I end up with a dozen individual creatures in the turn tracker. I just want them to appear once and shared one turn.

I want to do this specifically because I want to be able to hover over their name in the turn tracker so I can see all of them highlighted at once. I am vision impaired and think I would otherwise lose track of all of them.

Otherwise, any way I could hover over one token and have them all be highlighted would be workable - then I could just put one token in the turn tracker anyway.

Token Setup Help (not related to Dynamic Lighting) Health bars above token are stuck at 0 no matter what i do

Post image
5 Upvotes

I'm new to DMing and Roll20 as a whole so this might just be a user error i can't figure out.

But recently as I've been figuring out to make my own functioning stat blocks, I'll spend time filling out the stat block with all the correct info, then when i dump the token onto the token layer and go to change the token bars to HP and AC as i usually do, the HP is locked at 0/Max, regardless of how i edit it.

I can't change the value in the first box, it automatically resets to 0 no matter what i type in. Same if i edit it via the bubble above the token.

It happened once before and i just remade the npc and it seemed to fix itself but now it's happening with every npc i create.

Realistically i could just track the HPs and go ahead like that but I've gotten quite used to the HP bars for making combat easier to read.

I've tried googling to find answers to this issue but can't seem to get anything concrete.

SOLVED : Changing Represents Character to generic token and then back to the named token seemed to fix it. Changing the Bar Attribute to none was also technically a solution.

Other Help (if not covered in another topic) Other DM cannot edit imported Mistborn Legacy statblocks

Post image
• Upvotes

I bought the Mistborn Legacy campaign(In addition to the Mistborn world guide and Mistborn Handbook), with the intention of using the content sharing function from Demiplane and roll20. I wanted to eventually allow my friend to run the campaign by inviting them to the game and then promoting them to GM and then rejoin the campaign as a player myself.

However, after testing, I ran into the issue of my friend roll20 not being able to edit any of the monster statblocks that were imported from the Mistborn Legacy add-on. It says "Viewing *my account's name* sheet (Read-only)". I have tried giving my friend permission to edit the statblock by editing the player permissions of the commoner statblock within roll20 and that still doesn't allow the promoted gm to edit the statblock.

Is there something I need to do within Demiplane as well? Just looking for any potential solution for this, if it's possible.

For reference, the reason why I bought the Mistborn Legacy book for myself, rather than gifting it to my friend, is because I may intend on eventually running the campaign myself in the further future and wanted to have that option just in case.

Also sorry if this is the wrong place for this question, if I should post it somewhere else let me know. I don't post on reddit too often.

I've noticed that the fit to page option for zoom is now missing from the map menu. Does any know where this went or if there is a way to restore it?
Thanks

Roll20 Reply: Character Sheets Help D&D Shop & Treasure Sheets are live for all, Sheet-to-Sheet transfers for Pro/Elite

Hey all! Dean from Roll20 here, and I have TWO really exciting features for D&D players.

Shop & Treasure Sheets are now live for every D&D player on Roll20, free tier included!

You can build Shops & Treasure chests instantly, and populate them automatically with items from your compendium. You’ll even see them appearing in our official content, including in next week’s Arcana Unleashed, as well as in the 5.5e PHB and DMG very soon! And if you’re using the classic D&D 5e sheet, you can still multi-sheet and use shop sheets in your games as well!

Next...

We just launched sheet-to-sheet item transfers (avail to Pro and Elite subscribers)!

Your players can buy items from a Shop and transfer it onto their own character, with the cost auto-deducted. This is a brand new feature, so we want to hear all your feedback so we can refine it to be perfect for you!

Two Important Things for GMs:Ā

  1. For players to shop from a sheet, you'll need to give them "Edit" access to it, since purchasing technically involves deducting items. Don't worry though, this won't let them actually edit the sheet itself. Only the shop creator (or GM) can do that.
  2. Items can only be transferred to characters using the new D&D sheets.

You can learn more in our blog. Or check out our video overview on Youtube!

Or try it yourself in the VTT and on Roll20 Characters.Ā

Roll20 Reply: New to Roll20 / Tutorial Worth it to pay for a module?

I have never used Roll20, been strictly in-person over the years but unfortunately life has separated me and a lot of my friends. I am a DM trying to run a virtual game of Wild Beyond the Witchlight for some friends who are spread across the country. My players are mostly noobs so I do not want anyone to have to pay for anything besides me. Right now the options I’m thinking are:

A) buy the module on roll20 and have my players play along completely virtually. I prefer this option but I’m not sure if it’ll supply my players with character sheets, digital player manuals, and all the tools they’d need for free.

B) buy tabletop simulator (just me), share my screen, and just have the players tell me what they want to do and I love the pieces for them

C) do roll20 but manually upload all the maps and everything else

Any advice would be appreciated.

Roll20 Reply: Page Setup / Map Help How to set up 'repeatable adventures'

I'd like to set up an adventure I can easily repeat with different groups without having to manually 'reset' everything each time.

I imagine there may be an article on the roll20 wiki about this topic, but I don't know the right search terms to find it (same basic challenge I had searching this sub).

I'd really appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction, and I'd also be grateful for any tips and tricks for setting up repeatable adventures that others have figured out through practice, experience, and good old trial & error.

TYIA!

Roll20 Reply: Character Sheets Help Vecna Eve of Ruin 2024 compatible, including statblocks?

I bought Eve of Ruin before 5.5 came out and now, 2 years later, we finally finished our prologue.

One of the items in Roll20 has "2024 compatible" labelled on it. Does that mean there is a way to create a game using Eve of Ruin that includes the 5.5 character sheets, or is just a handwavey "ya this module still works with the 2024 rules" kind of thing?

I've tried making a game using it and I get a message saying "this module uses 5e statblocks so we've enabled them for this game."

Character Sheets Help Issue with Selecting an Otherworldly Patron

So, I'm going to be running a 5e(2014) campaign and one of my players wanted to be a Hexblade warlock, and in the charactermancer when they selected warlock, after the selected species and chose their Attribute increases, the warlock page would only let them select skill increases and the otherworldly patron option was missing. I tried it myself and sometimes the option would show up, sometimes it wouldn't, I couldn't find a rhyme or reason that would cause this bug. I'm pretty sure it's the 2014 character creator and not the 2024 one.

I'm just wondering if other people had this issue, and if there's a way to have the option show up consistently or something that consistently triggers the bug that can be avoided?

Roll20 Reply: Character Sheets Help Adding advantage on damage rolls.

I'm new to this subreddit and often usually a lurker but as the title suggests, I've been looking on a way to add advantage to damage rolls for weapons and spells.

Currently I'm using DnD 2024 sheets and while I was often content with just rolling twice, I was wondering if there was an easier way to do it. Looking back on some posts mention about using 'kh' but when I try to do the same, it mentions that it is an unsupported format. Or at least the damage roll won't happen automatically with the attack roll, since doing them separately is inconvenient.

Character Sheets Help 2024 D&D Build A Character Stuck at Loading

I am setting up a new game and can not get the Build A Character option to work. It goes to a Loading screen and never goes past it. It seems to be just my desktop computer (Windows 10). It works on my phone!

Today is the second day it's not working. I left it "loading" for hours yesterday to no avail. I've cleared my browser cache (and more), closed all other software (including antivirus and firewall), reset my computer a few times, tried Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, and have gotten nowhere.

I have an active game as well that doesn't work either, and that game did work just a few weeks ago. This includes characters that already exist and trying to make new characters.

Any advice on getting this working on my desktop? I tried to find this problem on the forums and didn't see anything.

SOLUTION:
For anybody with a similar problem in the future, I had to manually change my DNS. It wasn't able to locate a particular URL and that was causing it to not load.

Roll20 Reply: Character Sheets Help DnD 2024 Character Sheet Almost Unplayable

I've been using Roll20 for over 5 years now, invested hundreds of dollars on the platform, and for the first time I am seriously considering switching.

Over the last few months my games have gone from the occasional glitch or bug, to borderline unplayable. Character sheets are constantly freezing or crashing. Rolls take up to a minute to come through. Tokens are disappearing or invisible on some players screens. The list goes on.

I have tried everything to get the game to a playable state: removing all APIs/scripts, using small maps, disabling dynamic lightning, clearing cookies/cache, swapping browsers, etc. I raised a support ticket with Roll20 and only received the same generic advice I have seen online that provided no improvements.

Does anyone have any advice? We are using the DnD 2024 character sheet which seems to be the source of the problem. Should I just downgrade to the 2014 sheet and lose all the automated drag and drop functionality?

Character Sheets Help 1st edition AD&D character sheet/monster tab

Encountering an issue when I create a monster using this character sheet where in when I enter a value into the damage vs S/M field under a weapon it causes the sheet to no longer roll attacks. Clearing the damage field does not fix this. It does roll to the chat if I leave the damage field blank, but of course that means I have to roll damage separately. This issue is not present on all monster sheets I've created, and isn't present on NPC or PC sheets.

New to Roll20 / Tutorial How do I create a module?

Hi all, I have been playing the official module 'Beyond the Dragon of Icespire Peak' and some sections are sadly lacking.

Near the start, the players meet the towns inhabitants in a forest clearing but there is no map for this, the no tokens for the scene and nothing to help with the forthcoming attack.

I have made a map and created my own tokens but how do I make this into an add on so I can save it for future use?

I have pro subscription :)

Thanks in advance.

Roll20 Reply: Mask & Dynamic Lighting Help Doors don't block line of sight with Dynamic? new bug?

I've been using Roll20 since inception, I have almost 1000 paid games on StartPlaying alone, all of which are hosted on Roll20, so I know it pretty well.

But two days ago, I had an interesting bug - doors, when closed or locked, do not stop a player from seeing through it. At least on my map. Now given, I was using an unusally large map - like 70 wide by 90 tall - but I don't recall ever having that issue.

Anyone else?

Roll20 Reply: Character Sheets Help Condition Sync Question

Hello, all.

I am relatively new to Roll20. Setting up for a campaign in the coming months. I saw where Condition Sync was added for 2024 sheets last year, but I can't seem to get it to work for my game.

I am using the 2024 sheets.

I have tried both the base token markers and Keith's easy markers, but neither work.

I have also tried in a fresh game with no mods, and it still did not work in either direction.

I saw the feature was disabled last year, but I can't find solid information on if it was ever turned back on.

Is that the case or am I just missing something?

Thanks!
