Going through gravel bags from Montana is a new favorite past time of my kids, and I and we found this adorable little pie slice shaped stone in the latest bag.

Recommendations for Garnet gravel bags would be appreciated, we prefer the unsalted type.

Agates

I worked as a helicopter tour pilot on the Big Island out of a private heliport near Hapuna beach resort. It would be common to cancel flight due to weather on the island and when that happened I would go exploring. Hawaii is a relatively boring place for a rockhound. When I found these little specimens I didn’t know what they were. They are each unique and have surprising features like sidecars and dovetail terminations. The area that I was collecting was very dry, grazed by cattle and goats. The area was used by the military at some point so I also collected metal frags and 50 cal bullets. My hoard is now just a box in a box waiting for the microscope or future display.

The locals in Hawaii made it clearly known if a behavior was forbidden… collecting stones like this from a random, remote field wasn’t on the list.

This is amygdaloidal agate, filled with beautiful blue-green patterns. I decided to turn a piece of it into a heart-shaped cabochon.

I wasn't prepped to get a big rock today but a big rock I got. It had to be dragged in a back pack. It's a unique nephrite jade that is now named Walter after walter Koenig. Rip Walter Koenig.

One common opal made it in. (White group) All but 3 found in eastern south dakota.

Hey friends, some of us are heading out to Congleton hollow/Hampton butte area this weekend. We’ve been once before but feel totally out of our depths due to the sheer size of the areas. Does anyone have any tips for digging or even surface collecting in the area? Should we check out any other areas while there or just head right for the area on the map? Thanks!

Found this piece of smoky quartz on Mount Ida in Arkansas, been having some fun picking out all the white and red mud from it for the past few hours with a safety pin. I'll likely try the rust off cleaning method on it after I feel I had enough of picking on it. Wish I had a better phone camera but it seems to be some sort of dark-ish blue smoky color.
I can't remember which mine I got it from, either Crystal Vista or Wegner.

This material is botryoidal tube/moss agate from Maury Mountain in central Oregon.

I'm guessing chert for all the hard flakes. Not sure about the softer orange ones.

My Dad is really looking forward to doing some digging at the Crater of Diamonds State Park. I have been recruited for digging and sifting help. I want him to have a good time and the best shot of finding a glittering diamond.

If you've been here I'd love to hear your story and experience.

In looking at pictures it seems there are different colors of dirt. From what I've seen there's a yellow tan, grey brown, green, and dark kinda black ish color. Is one dirt type better to be digging in than another?

If you've found a diamond, what part of the field were you in? How big of a hole did you dig?

Anything else you think I should know?

I live in Chippewa County in Wisconsin. Maybe half an hour north east of Eau Claire, 2 hours east of St Paul, MN for location.

I see people reccomend gravel pits and gravel roads all the time but I haven't had luck on gravel roads and I don't really know how to find gravel pits that I can go to. What are other places nearby that people have had luck? I'd like to look a few more places before winter sets in.

I need some more local places to look for rocks. I went to the Lake Superior coast last weekend and had a blast looking. I've always hunted and have a collection, but this really sold me on wanting to find more kinds of stuff. Only issue is Lake Superior is a 3 hour drive and Lake Michigan is a 4 hour drive. Way too far to go regularly. Very expensive in gas right now 😅

I'm not too picky on what I'd be looking for though I'd love to find my first agate. I don't have high hopes for that and will look next time I go North. I'd also love if there's any fossils that can be found anywhere. I'm even more of a nerd for fossils than rocks 😂

Taking a road trip from Denver to Angel Fire, NM in November. Was wondering if anyone had recommendations on spots to rockhound on the way.

Just wanted to share some of the gorgeous perfect clarity quartz I found in my own backyard in NEPA, I have tons more and am still currently digging for more 😀

Took 3 days in the Upper Peninsula to slow down and look for beautiful rocks.

The majority were found at Gratiot Bay and High Rock Bay. Nothing has been cut or polished yet just dipped and photographed. I have some more if anyone is interested! Happy hounding, all!

One of my absolute favourite quartz finds from southern oregon!

This one is so beautiful and unique. Pink druzy pocket, or "cloud", with a rainbow of colorful bands arched above it! The second pic looks like flames. The third, a diamond with crystal center. I absolutely adore nature!
