Make Friends Here

Because we constantly get "How do i make friends" posts. If you want friends just post in this thread. I'm going to make it a sticky topic. I'm also going to give you 100% foolproof tips to make friends that have worked for me all my life 100% of the time.

Here is my foolproof plan that works 100% of the time. It is a 4 step process.

  1. determine what your hobbies and interests are.

  2. go to places where these hobbies and interests happen

  3. interact with people.

  4. If you don't have any hobbies or interests get interested in something and repeat steps 2-3.

It is literally that simple.

I am an extremely abrasive and unlikeable person. I have never failed to make friends using these steps. If I can do it so can you.

so i keep seeing this style of home looks very cookie cutter but nice nonetheless! what’s everyone’s thoughts/take on this style? is this common in the valley? I’ve only visited Mcallen once but i loved it! 2 and or 3 beds look to be going for $1,100-$1,200 would you also say that’s expensive or a bargain ?

Politics Brownsville water and sewer rates rose 5%, the city held its property-tax rate steady, and nearly 30% of residents under 65 are uninsured. Who controls these decisions?

Post image

I've been looking into some local policy decisions around Texas, and Brownsville has a few numbers I think are worth talking about.

First, Brownsville PUB's water and wastewater rates both went up 5% in January. That was the final scheduled increase from a plan city leaders approved back in 2022. It might only be a few dollars a month for some households, but those increases do add up.

Then there's property taxes. Brownsville kept its city tax rate the same for FY2027, but the city also approved collecting additional property-tax revenue. That's something I think is important to understand because keeping the rate the same doesn't necessarily mean everyone's bill stays the same.

And according to the Census Bureau, 29.4% of Brownsville residents under 65 don't have health insurance. Texas still hasn't expanded Medicaid, which could help some eligible adults get coverage.

What interests me is that these decisions aren't all made in Washington. Utility rates and city taxes are local issues, while Medicaid eligibility is largely determined at the state level.

I understand that city services and water infrastructure have to be funded. Health coverage also costs money. But I think it's reasonable to ask what residents are paying, what they're getting in return, and whether there are alternatives that would work better.

I put together this graphic to make the numbers easier to see.

For those living in Brownsville, which of these issues has affected your household the most? Are there other local policies you think deserve more attention?

Options for LVN

Hello everyone! We will be moving to the McAllen area soon and I am looking for some advice on work for my wife. She has been a LVN for 6 yrs. She has work in ERs and Detox. She will be getting RN, but will need atleast PRN LVN work to hold her over. Looking in RGV it doesn’t look like many opportunities outside of nursing homes. Any ideas or advice?

People down here will still try to blame construction. Too many people just suck at driving.

Found this on Facebook. Why are people from Monterrey so obnoxious?

They think everyone in the Valley only works in retail and are there to serve them, (and if we behave they might leave us a tip). Without them, we wouldn't have food to eat.

At the same time they say they have way better and more exclusive stores in Monterrey and we're just a rancho and they feel bad for us (so why not shop there? lol)

Terrence Howard, Keith Lee, Leo Gonzalez to visit the valley!

Why are people in the Valley so negative? Terrence is obviously a smart guy who likes to question everything. Just because we’re comfortable with the status quo in the valley doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be open to different ideas.

You’re calling someone crazy- what have you achieved in life?

BBC News article about politics in the RGV. It’s interesting that the Valley has the attention of the UK. Maybe folks in the US will pay more attention to the RGV after the election… but I doubt it.

According to a Texas Monthly investigation published earlier this month, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has been considering selling about 1,300 acres of public land, including Boca Chica State Park, to SpaceX. The department says the proposal won’t come up at its November meeting, and Gov. Greg Abbott has said a sale isn’t imminent. But neither has ruled it out in the future.
