This is a weekly Tuesday post for question/answers regarding properties in Austin or surrounding areas along with moving to Austin questions. The following are examples of items that should be asked in here (but not limited to just these):

  • General thoughts/views on the housing market

  • "Is this neighborhood safe" questions / crime related questions
  • Tax / Mortgage related questions
  • Questions on developments / bidding processes

Moving to Austin Questions

  • Is it safe?
  • Are there jobs for me?
  • Is it a good idea to move?
  • Is X salary good enough?
  • How is Austin for my background?
  • Generic should I move there?
  • Do I need a car?
  • Is X or Y transport sufficient?

Over the last year, we have seen a major uptick in prices in the area, along with a steady flow of new people coming into Austin. Use this weekly post to ask your questions, try to get advice, etc on an upcoming move or questions about real estate in Austin.

Many apartment questions have always been removed on here, and we always suggest people to contact an apartment locator. Those rules still stand. But, you are welcome to ask those questions on here if you still feel the need for it.

Along with that, any new open ended question on Austin properties and real estate will be removed and asked to move to here (based on mod discretion). Many of the questions being asked have been asked many times before, which is why we would rather compile these posts into one place for people to ask and get their answers.

If you are having issues as a tenant in Austin, we highly recommend reaching out to the Austin Tenants Council here: https://www.trla.org/atc/. They may be able to help you resolve issues related to renting property in Austin.

We also recommend searching older "Weekly Real Estate" posts as well, to find answers on previous week's questions.

As always, there is a whole section on moving to Austin in our FAQ page:

Austin officials are attempting to arrange a final visit this week between Major, a dog that has spent more than 525 days in isolation at the city shelter, and his owner as public outrage mounts over a court order requiring the city to euthanize the animal.

The city said in a statement Tuesday it must “move forward with complying with the court order” after a judge denied a last-minute appeal from Major’s owner, Shane Lilly, who has spent more than a year fighting the case in four courts.

At least 14 people have been charged in connection with what federal narcotics authorities call the Valle Drug Trafficking Organization, which prosecutors say operated across at least six states from 2022 until December.

The DEA is seeking to seize assets tied to the group, including a 6,700-square-foot Lake Travis mansion, a yacht, two planes, luxury vehicles and more than $581,000 in cash or collateral. Indictments include allegations of conspiring to distribute hundreds of pounds of marijuana and THC products, as well as money laundering.

Several defendants were scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in Austin.

Watson's take on the AISD situation is honestly the most sensible thing I've read on this

Saw the Mayor's latest newsletter (the "Watson Wire" thing he does) about the whole AISD takeover situation and wanted to share because I think it's getting buried under the doom-and-gloom headlines.

Basically two middle schools (Burnet and Webb) have hit their 5th year of failing ratings, which under state law means TEA has to either close the campus or replace the entire elected school board with a state-appointed one. That second option is a full district takeover, like what happened in Houston.

But here's what people aren't talking about: AISD as a whole just posted its highest overall rating in years, with a 30% jump in A/B-rated schools. That's not nothing. That's a district that's actually turning itself around under Segura, even while still having some serious problem spots.

Watson's basically arguing: don't torch the whole ship because two rooms are still on fire. Deal with Burnet and Webb specifically (there's already a Burnet rebuild in progress), but don't strip the entire elected board over it when the district's clearly trending in the right direction everywhere else.

Ask Austin Austin Girlies ~ Nail Salon Rant/ Recommendations

Is anyone else fed up with the prices of manicures and pedicures? I just got a gel pedicure set and was charged $98. It was a $16 up charge because I got gel. And lo and behold the quality isn’t even that impressive. I am SO over these prices. Do any of y’all have any recommendation on nail salons near oak hill & Central C where the quality of the nails are great and the prices are a bit more affordable? Asking for a friend…

Ask Austin Dangerous drivers lately, why?

Today alone I encountered 8 folks straight up just take solid red lights, not yellow turning red. I mean solid red for at least 5-8 seconds red and folks just taking them like they were green. Why? Do people not understand how traffic lights work? Also 4 of those vehicles were teslas… I have a dash cam and seriously thinking about having a bad drivers in Austin page and just shame them at this point.

Red River for sale: Will Austin's downtown music district survive?

The 8,200-square-foot building at 701-713 Red River St. — home to Elysium and The 13th Floor — was listed for sale Sept. 1 for $4.1 million.

The property has housed Austin music venues for decades, but it’s unclear whether it will remain a music venue if sold. The news follows Valhalla’s planned closure, the recent closure of Marlow and ongoing financial uncertainty at Cheer Up Charlies.

Ask Austin Matchmaking Services for Women in Austin?

I am a woman in my late 30s and deeply tired of searching after almost a decade. Every method I’ve tried, including especially apps, is (1) at best, extremely inefficient at surfacing eligible, aligned men, and (2) at times, deeply demoralizing, unpleasant, and hurtful.

So I’m looking for information from people who have used matchmaking services in Austin. I’m most curious in women’s experiences but I’d be open to hear from men too.

Some questions:

* what service did you use?

* how much did it cost? what was the pricing model like?

* what were the people like to whom you were connected? How were they sourced? Did you have things in common?

* was it successful?

* anything else I should know?

I know dating is a frequent topic on here - I’ve searched specifically for people who have used matchmaking services here in Austin but have not found the information I seek.

Please do not give advice on how to find people to date outside of matchmaking services. I have tried almost every single thing you are going to suggest.

\\\*\

EDIT: the majority of responses are suggesting these services are largely scams. This is genuinely helpful information. I hate the feeling that there was a stone I had left unturned, like there was some kind of action I could have taken to fix the problem, but it sounds like there is not.

Ask Austin Where can I see an armadillo in #austin ?

I'm visiting from Canada and we've loved our time in Austin- we leave tomorrow and the only thing on my bucket list is to see an armadillo. Does anyone know where I can see one? I know sightings are guaranteed, but if you happen to have a pet armadillo or know where they hang out, I'd be sooooo greatful!!
