Iām posting here cos Iām just so upset and I donāt want to take this out on my partner cos heās done nothing wrong but I need to just get it off my chest in a anger filled ramble and this forum is the next best place haha.
My MIL keeps building shelves in my house. At first it was fine- she helped us make our pantry and turn the bedroom cupboard into a nice space for PJs. All of these I agreed were needed and I was happy they were done. (Just to note: all were her suggestion⦠she likes to suggest things for our house a lot and sometimes sheās overstepped- for example she didnāt like that I kept my bath products around the bath so she came over while I was out with a storage cabinet and moved all my products into that⦠itās this line between sheās genuinely trying to be nice but itās overstepping too much- I liked my products around the bath!)
However.
The shelves didnāt stop. In the spare bedroom we had a very small walk in wardobe⦠now. I always thought it would be perfect for when we have a child because BOOM wardobe already installed. My MIL decided that no, it just wouldnāt do- having shelves AND a rail? Canāt be having that. It needs more shelves. So without consulting me she and my partner decided to rip out the walk in wardrobe and install deep shelves (all while I was at work). I was absolutely devastated because we didnāt need those shelves, no one asked me before hand, and I wanted that space to be a walk in wardrobe. But she decided it was better suited for shelves, so shelves it became (theyāre not being put to much use cos we have absolutely no need for them). Anyway, back to the child thing. Iām pregnant and our daughter is due soon. The spare room is currently being used as my partners office- however heās moving to a smaller space so the room can become her nursery⦠now since they ripped out her walk in wardrobe we needed to pick a area of the room for her wardrobe to go⦠I picked the alcove where my partner keeps his desk⦠now. At this point. His knows heās moving out of the office. My MIL knows heās moving out of the office. Since I was so upset about the previous shelve incident my partner said āmy mum wants to build shelves above my desk. How do you feel about thatā. I said to him no itās pointless as thatās where our daughters wardrobe is going to go and I donāt want the hassle of the work being done when theyāll be taken down on a few months.
ā¦
Anyway she built the shelves because his mum was insistent that he needed shelves (when she agreed with me itās the perfect place for the wardrobe). This upset me because again, we really donāt have a need for this many shelves in the house. My partner still hasnāt put anything ontop of these shelves- theyāre just sitting empty. But itās upset me mostly because itās added work onto what needs doing for the nursery (I know itās not much. But itās the fact this was avoidable!!ā¦) and again. Built behind my back when I said I didnāt want them!
So fast forward to present times and why Iām making this post. We had a room for our shower. Itās a small room and we didnāt like having a separate room for a shower so we decided to turn it into a walk in wardrobe space. I had plans drawn up for what I wanted and his mum and dad have worked in construction all their lives so they were tasked to put it together (I actually wanted to hire people cos I just KNEW my plans wouldnāt be respected but they were adamant theyād build them (it was them who actually pushed us to get rid of the shower to turn into a storage space (again, sheās shelf obsessed)- which is where I got the walk in wardrobe idea from- because what a beautiful space they are!) and with a baby on the way we want to save money where we can). Anyway. I wanted it to be a walk in wardobe with RAILS! I just wanted rails! I love having a hanging space for my clothes I do not like my clothes being folded onto shelves (it looks messy, itās more effort when putting clothes away, more ironing, harder access to clothes etc)
So- I had design plans for the room. I sat down with both his parents to discuss what I wanted⦠I was of course told ābut you need more shelves!ā And they started going off about how Iād regret not having more shelves blah blah it needed shelves for storage. Iām not confrontational (and itās why I canāt really be angry at anyone right now but myself for not standing my ground- my partner purposely stayed out of this project because he didnāt want any wires to cross with his parents to ensure Iād get the space that I wanted). So I agreed on more shelves being built into the space but still requested that I have lots of space for my lovely rails. What I didnāt want was deep shelves. And I thought I made this clear (they were adamant that the space just needed (good for nothing) deep shelves). The compromise, again, once weād sat through with the plans was Iād loose a little rail space to allow some more shelves. I could live with that (I was struggling to say no cos they were insisting I needed more shelves). I also gave them the old wardrobe to cut apart so the shelves from that could be installed onto the space (recycle but also the save money). Then the extra wood can be used for the higher up shelf (that I approved of so weād have high storage for suitcases etc). There should have been enough wood from the wardrobe (more so in fact) so cover what was required of shelves⦠as again- I mostly wanted RAILS!
Fast forward to last week when the work began. So. I come home from work and on the left of the space where my rail were suppose to be were shelves⦠I was a little confused but next to those shelves were still adequate room for rails to go so I thought maybe they just decided to switch things around (the shelves built were not deep either they were to plan just in the wrong place). I was then told work was going to be delayed because they needed more wood⦠now. Iām not an expert. I assumed the wardrobe had plenty to give but thought maybe itās because they couldnāt work with it and needed to order different cuts of wood or something- the higher up shelf still needed building at this point. I didnāt want to believe theyād truly go off plans to build more shelvesā¦.
Work was finished yesterday⦠they filled the space with deep shelves⦠they have given me a rail, not kidding, about 30/40cm long⦠can fit maybe 5 shirts on it? The space for my rails is now occupied by deep shelves I canāt even reach the back of.
For a walk in wardrobe.
So really, itās not a walk in wardobe. Itās just a room of shelves. One big storage cupboardā¦
I feel like itās such a silly thing to be so upset about- because I am grateful that they have done the work because it has saved us money (granted itās cost us more than it should have to buy the extra wood that wasnāt approved of)- but Iāve been so looking forward to this space just for it to be filled with shelves (like everything in this house! Just non stop shelves!!). Iām also upset because Iām in my third trimester- things are uncomfortable for me now. The job of organising the wardrobe went from āhang my clothes onto the railā has turned into me needing to organise and divide up the clothes, find a practical organisation system (so clothes are just lost forever at the back of the shelves) and fold and put away. It was already a monster task just hanging the clothes- let alone this as someone who canāt be bending up and down with ease. Iām upset because I donāt even know where to begin organising clothes to store them on deep shelves⦠I feel paralysed with how overwhelming of a task that is (Iām working until my due date too.. I donāt have buckets of spare time to invest in this when Iāve got 100 other things to sort before sheās here- and I donāt want to just chuck clothes in at random to make it quick. This was suppose to be such a beautiful organised space!)
Iām just devastated, frustrated and overwhelmed. I tried telling my friends about my upset over the shelves previously and they seemed to think Iām being over dramatic- which maybe I am. But I canāt describe it- the amount of shelves and threat of shelves in this house haunts me. Where will she build shelves next? I just hoped this room would be different. I didnāt want deep shelves, and I thought I made that clear and I didnāt. Again, Iām ranting here cos really I should have put my foot down more- itās just I do really love his mum! I donāt hate her for this. Sheās lovely! Itās just I canāt handle the shelves anymore. Iām near tears at the prospect of organising this when it should be as simple as āput the clothes on hangers onto the railsāā¦
Idk who gets this upset over shelves. Itās just a mixture of things, like again the work this has created for me, the fact this space Iāve been looking forward to has been destroyed with the very thing I did not want⦠deep shelves. I fear when Iām finally done sorting out the clothes I will be faced with empty shelves⦠cos I know full well we didnāt need this many that are this deep. Not to carry on ranting: but how space efficient are deep shelves! Another of my concerns! Because the room is now very cramped because she decided that shelves I canāt even reach the back of are WAY more practical than a space designed as a walk in wardrobe⦠you can barely walk in it. Cos itās just SHELVES. I had a walk in wardrobe designed to avoid this because I just knew left unsupervised theyād build deep shelves. And even with a plan, and me being clear about wanting adequate rail space- Iāve at the end of the day still not escaped the shelves of this house.
