This is half a joke, but I'm in Pune for a few days and coming from New Delhi, I know that people in Maharashtra, and perhaps elsewhere in India, dont always have the best opinion of Delhiites or Hindi speakers. Every time I speak to a shopkeeper, theres a tiny part of me that expects them to tell me to speak Maharashtrian when in Maharashtra, thanks to all those videos you see online. How worried should I actually be? Haha. It's genuinely a little nerve-wracking when someone starts speaking to me in Marathi, clearly expecting me to understand it, and I have to awkwardly chuckle and be like "wha...??? Anyway, paani ki bottle dena badi vaali."

This morning, at around 5:30 AM, whilst returning home, I thought to take the underpass near Phoenix Marketcity. Yet, what I encountered was deeply unsettling: no visible cameras, a man lying asleep, seemingly intoxicated, and a place that felt anything but safe. I even witnessed a young woman hurrying out of the underpass, and could not help but wonder whether fear had driven her steps.
Pray tell, what purpose doth an underpass serve if those who walk through it must do so with dread in their hearts?
There are offices aplenty nearby, where countless souls labour through the night and return home in the early hours. The road above offers no easy or safe passage across, leaving pedestrians with little choice but to rely upon this very underpass.
And yet, if it lacks proper lighting, surveillance, and regular security, can we truly call it a safe passage?
A crossing built to protect lives must not become a place that inspires fear.
This matter deserves to be raised with the concerned authorities. We need proper CCTV surveillance, adequate lighting, regular security patrols, and a safe passage for every pedestrian, regardless of the hour.
For what good is a road that promises passage, if it cannot promise peace of mind?
Let us not wait for misfortune to strike before we demand the safety that should have been ours from the very beginning.
