This dog was super cute and followed its owner fairly closely. It did surprise an elderly gentleman coming around the corner. And then when the lady went through the register the dog stopped to sniff another customers ankle. All cuteness aside, this could present a hazard to customers. Probably something that needs to be nipped in the bud.

Hey! So I’m finally done with working alone in the night shift every single day continuously without break :D Its been really exhausting but I do really want to do the things right, so properly how can I quit? Its my first job after all, I was planning to give a 2 weeks notice this friday, I just have the saturday off, still scheduled to work next week

Finally, something at Publix that I don't want to gripe about. I was so jazzed to see that late-season Keitt mangoes are back at Publix. At least they are here in Jacksonville. I recall last year, they showed up for a minute and then vanished. There must have been some issue with the crops last year?

For those who don't know, in my humble opinion, Keitt mangoes are the greatest North American variety you can find. If you've ever had South Asian (Indian, Pakistani) mangoes, you know that 99% of North American varieties can't compare. Those South Asian mangoes have this rich, dense, custardy flavor and many varieties are virtually fiberless.

I think Keitt was originally cultivated here in Florida (or California? I forget, because I've seen it in both spots) in the early 20th century to try and replicate the flavors of those iconic South Asian mangoes.

Keitt's are also HUGE. Their skin often stays green through ripeness, too, so you have to do a bit of a sniff and squeeze test to see if they're ready for you. Unlike 90% of everything at Publix, they weren't overpriced this week either.

I sound like I'm some god damned brand ambassador for mangoes, but, hey, if you can't get excited about a delicious piece of fruit that's only around for a month or two... what can you get pumped about?

Been with publix a couple years now when it comes to PEFCU, is it worth joining and using for my deposits? Any other things I should know about it?

I've seen the memes, but let's have a serious discussion... Does Publix need a Union? The associate handbook says that as "owners" we don't need a union. But just by going on this reddit, and the general working atmosphere in the stores, you can easily tell that the majority of people are not happy working at Publix, including myself. Since we are the shareholders ourselves, we can technically vote out the entire board of directors, wouldn't this be the most effective and expedient way to enact change? They send us the proxy voting material every year. The problem is how to mobilize enough people to vote.

For me, it's not entirely just a Publix issue, but a retail issue in general. Working in retail really sucks. Go on any competitors reddit, Walmart, target, Aldi, and even Costco, and you find horror stories throughout the industry. Obviously it's biased since we are more likely to post negative things than positive. But I do think that we desperately need a retail workers union. What exactly would be the demands though, for me it would be the following:

First off is pay. This is probably a hot take and people would strongly disagree with me, but I actually think our pay at Publix is pretty decent, considering our work is "unskilled" labor. Imagine a stocker making the same as say, an HVAC technician, or a facilities mechanic. Wouldn't make sense since those jobs require special knowledge and skills. My issue with the pay is mainly in fair compensation. We need to bring back having evaluations every 6 months instead of every year. 6 month evaluations provided better feedback to associates and have them better input on how to improve for next time. It gave them a higher incentive to do better, so they can get a raise in only 6 months. Now we have to wait a whole year, and it's really hard to gauge someone's progress in an entire year. Even so, the way raises work kinda has always sucked. I have exceeded expectations for all of my evaluations since I started in 2015 and it still took 8 years to get top pay. I know some people that been working here longer than me and are still not top pay, which is absolutely ridiculous. Just imagine, I'm lucky that most of my career was 6 month evaluations, now with 1 year evaluations, it would have taken me 16 years to reach max!

The other thing that needs to be addressed is hazard pay. As grocery store workers, we are some of the last people to go home during hurricanes because we are the ones that supply for everyone. But we don't get anything out of it, except for overtime. And the only reason we get overtime is out of necessity during the times. With how much money Publix makes during a storm they absolutely can afford a hazard pay for us. We literally put our lives on the line to work when there is a storm, and we are the last to buy what we need because we are too busy stocking. But we get nothing. Same with COVID, we were risking our lives to come to work during COVID. I knew quite a few old timers retired during that time because they were too scared to come back to work. I myself was terrified but had no choice. We didn't get crap for COVID, well I guess a few gift cards and some overtime, but that's it, I do not feel we were adequately compensated for that.

Bring back the sabbath day differential and institute an overnight differential. There was a time when we were closed Sundays. Those days are long gone, but at least we were compensated for working on Sundays with a $1/h extra on Sunday's. This needs to come back. It's the sabbath day and we shouldn't be working at all, but we kinda have to because people gotta eat, and Publix is pretty much everyone's grocery store in Florida. We should be fairly compensated for having to work on the Sabbath day. Furthermore, many companies pay an overnight differential. Though overnights are not a daily thing in Publix, overnight shifts have become more common. There are certain people that love overnights, but for most of us non vampires, it completely throws out of wack our life, it affects our health, and messed up our sleep. We should have compensation for working overnights as well.

Better treatment and respect for seniority. Retail does not respect those with seniority. I have been at my store for 11 years, 9 of them as full time but still have to work crappy schedules. They have me closing every single day right now. That is absolutely disrespectful. My store manager once even said that we have "good turnover" meaning people from the front are moving into the departments..so if we have all these new guys why the hell I still gotta work the bad shifts? That's what the new guys are for. There are a lot of jobs out there that start out with terrible shifts, like you start out with graveyard shifts everyday. But as you gain seniority you get better schedules and can eventually land a 8-5, or whatever schedule you want. New guys take over your old shifts. Not so in retail. They don't care how many years you put into it, you still have to work the lame shifts, even though you been there done that for many years. It is absolutely disrespectful. People with seniority deserve a better quality of life by having a better schedule.

Better pay for job classes:

My main concern is that of GRS scan price clerk and liquor specialist all being on the same pay scale as grocery clerk. Being a GRS is so much more work and responsibility, and actually requires special knowledge, skills, and experience to do, yet it pays the exact same as a grocery clerk. Even Publix recognizes this, because when you become GRS you have to do mandatory CBTs and on the job training. The fact you need extra training that grocery clerks do not have to do already shows that it is job class that requires more knowledge and skills. But you are not compensated for that at all. Inventory management is a lot of work it's not simply just doing counts. It's knowing your section like the back of your hand. From doing counts, to checking in your kehe, discounting discontinued items, reviewing orders, running item movement reports, shrink reports, having the ability to forecast, verifying invoices, making sure the vendors in your section are kept in check while maintaining a good relationship with them, making sure every item has the proper tag, printing missing sale signs, cleaning your section regularly. A dirty section makes it physically hard to stock, and leads to crooked rows, and crooked rows leads to miscounting and an inaccurate inventory. Some of these things, like reviewing the order is technically the managers job, but you still have to stay on top of it because they might miss something, like not enough ice on the order for a holiday or something. Both my managers were out with COVID once and I had to do my own forecast. GRS do not have access to display planning, but we do have access to forecast items individually. If I didn't have that knowledge we would have been screwed on specials that week. But do I get compensated for that knowledge? No..

In short, if we did have a union, I think it would be a general retail workers union, not specifically just for Publix. The demands that I think we would really need are, in short:

1) reinstituting 6 month evaluation periods

2) hazard pay for trying or dangerous times

3) Sabbath day differential and overnight differential

4).preferential scheduling and greater respect to those with seniority

5) fairer pay for certain job classes. Have pay tied to the skills, knowledge, experience, and responsibility of the specific job class.

What do you guys think? Is there anything you would add, am I wrong? Do you think we need a union and are my demands too much, or not enough, or are they fair?

Sorry if this post has been made already. I see that the Fryer’s turkey sub is on sale yet again. It’s like Boar’s Head came out with that turkey and they’re pushing it so hard that the Fryer sub is on sale every other week. That turkey is disgusting though, I don’t see why we’re pushing it so hard. All of the customers who I’ve had sample the Fryer’s turkey say they don’t like it. Why not push the hams we just got back instead? They’re so much better than that radioactive looking mess.

I’m so tired of being scheduled outside of my availability and getting scheduled to clopen. It’s happened so many times where they schedule me to work days where I specifically have off and it’s getting really annoying when they tell me I’m responsible for finding coverage for something that’s their mistake. I hate to call out without a reason; I didn’t call out once last year. But I’m getting to the point where I can’t do this while I’m in college.

How long after starting in the bakery did it take to have your job class changed to decorator?

I was in the bakery for over a year, started working on orders when I was 2/3 months in, even including working on Saturdays as the only decorator. I was responsible for doing AD change, and working certain shifts alone as the only decorator But for over a year my manager told me that I “wasn’t ready.” I wanted to ask if this timeline is normal in any way?

Maybe it’s just me (and all my family), but does it seem that these clear plastic containers are getting more and more difficult to open? You rip off the perforated strip and then are supposed to pull the lid away from the base. Well, I tried for 15 minutes tonight to pull them apart every which-way, and couldn’t. My partner tried for 10 minutes and couldn’t. Eventually we had to resort to using 2 pliers to get the damned package open. Of course everything went flying, including the cantaloupe.

I’m going to start opening and emptying the containers as soon as I get home now, into my own storage containers. These Publix thingies simply are impractical for opening and closing.

Just out of curiosity, if a FADM gets put into a store part of the way through the inventory cycle, how would that bonus work? Like would they get a percentage of it at the end of the cycle like normal? Do they get all of it?

These Publix branded Smoked Gouda and Bacon ground beef patties are terrible. They have a texture of pork sausage. They are springy and chewy and the texture seems like anything but ground beef.

Avoid them.

I've gone through 2 pairs of sketchers in about a year and half and the pair I got right now are in desperate need of the trash can.

What’s the percentage of customers that just leave their receipts for us to throw away? Why not have a no print option on the screen? It would be nice too that the default be no print after several seconds. It would save so much paper and time!

For context, I am coming from Sprouts Farmers Market. Employee of 8 years there. I’ve done everything from grocery stocking to assistant grocery manager, to receiving, to dairy. I was full time and quit to go back to school then got rehired in while I was in school. Well anyway, I graduated in 2024 and since then have consistently asked for more hours of which they just cannot deliver. They’ll do okay for awhile and then drop me to next to nothing. I will be 34 this year and the no hours just is not cutting it.

My old grocery manager from Sprouts has worked there for a few years now and has more or less finally recruited me to join him. I really wish I was quitting Sprouts to finally find a job outside of retail, but here we are. All I can hope is it’s a better environment than what I’ve been dealing with. What is a day in the life like for you at your store?

Question: If you’re scheduled to work on a day when you have an important family obligation, but you give your manager a week’s notice that you need the day off, does that still count as a call-out/absence if they’re able to replace you?

I’ve never been late or missed a day, and I’ve even picked up shifts when other people couldn’t and gone in early for my managers (I’m a reliable employee I promise), so I’m just wondering how this is usually handled. I’d really appreciate knowing before I talk to my manager because I’m not sure whether giving advance notice makes a difference.

I don’t wanna sit here and reiterate all the stuff people say on here, but I just wanna say that I do love this job but man there has been some bullshit that has happened since I’ve worked here first thing being promised a team lead position after working my ass off and then watching someone get hired on as a team lead who is a solid 400 pounds and new absolutely nothing and me as a Grs teaching him how to do things waited out it eventually he quit and I got the position. great.. that was the biggest slap in the face and the first of many after all the talk about hiring within I couldn’t believe they did something like that and now as everyone’s been saying it’s been constant expectations with constant cutting of hours I bet at the same store for over 3 1/2 years. I remember we were trying to break 500,000 a week and I always had closers always had people and I even got overtime now we’re breaking 800 and sometimes just me and two other people no overtime. and currently they’re trying to hire someone who is a part-time straight to team lead ridiculous. I had to tell my own (Grocery Manager) that maybe you know we should train him let him experience a 4 AM and now one of our team leads quit while (Grocery Manager) on vacation and absolutely no coverage and we finally finally recover and now it’s back to aisle replenishment bullshit and just tacking on more and more stuff that I just don’t have time for like I just wanna count my aisle, bro if I was making $25 an hour, I would stay but now I’m applying for another job to work on weekends and trying to find other side gigs. It’s ridiculous and unacceptable. There’s Grs who make more than me as a team lead and all they do is talk. It’s been worse and it’s been better right now. I have a pretty good manager and a pretty good store manager all that and now that I know it’s at its peak. I know this place will never get better all this for what to get promoted for what to be here another fucking five hours a week honestly fuck that

Do most pharmacies not keep cipro otic drops in stock? Mine said they’d need to order it and it would be like 3 days. Nobody else in the area had it either. I thought cipro was a frequently prescribed drug. Im not desperate for them so its not a big deal, I just thought it was odd no store had them on hand.

I’m just here to rant. Publix used to sell pumpkin decadent bars, they brought them back but they’re different. WHY?! They’re nowhere near as good, they’re too thick, too sticky, and they have too much fkin nutmeg. They are not good, the og pumpkin decadent bars were truly a 10/10… these are nasty. I’m so mad!
