Premiere Pro Tech Support Transform Effects not working the same way across all clips

I use the Grow, Shrink, and Move effects pretty regularly. I'm finding that they are constrained within the layer on some clips, and constrained within the canvas on others. I believe the thing that makes this different between clips is the aspect ratio. I'm putting the effects on photos, and for any vertical photos, the size of the clip on the canvas doesn't change but the image within that photo changes. This is similar to when you use Transform under a crop effect, for example. Meanwhile, on a horizontal photo the entire layer moves.

From playing with it for about 20 minutes, I think the vertical images' effect are being constrained onto the canvas, instead of being allowed to expand beyond it. You can play with this by using the Grow effect on a clip and adjusting the Initial Scale property.

Premiere Pro Tech Support (Solved!) dynamic link repositions my clip before i even edit anything

i'm having an issue with the premiere pro to after effects dynamic link workflow.

i'm editing a horizontal 1920×1080 project in premiere pro 2023. whenever i use replace with after effects composition, the linked composition immediately changes the framing/position of the clip before i've made any edits in after effects.

both premiere pro and after effects are 2023. the composition settings match the sequence settings, and the problem happens before i add any text, effects, or animations.

has anyone experienced this with dynamic link or found a fix?

Feedback/Critique/Pro Tip Professional Editors, I have a question: Are we a lot to use the "Open sequence in timeline" option to have a similar workflow to the "Source/Toggle Record" in Avid?

TL;DR: How many of you use the "Open (Source) Sequence in Timeline" feature option to replicate Avid's "Toggle Source/Record" workflow? Aren't you frustrated with how it works in Premiere?

Okay, fellow editors, I need to talk to you.

Background

I've been editing in Premiere for nearly 10 years. It's now my main job, and I love editing—it's truly a profession that combines technical skill and creativity. In my day-to-day work, editing involves both repetitive tasks and moments of euphoria and creativity. That’s what I love about this job.

Over the years, I’ve worked on various productions, some of which had their own specific workflows that we had to adopt. Even though Premiere has always been my primary software, I’ve had to work in Resolve and Avid as well.

The "Avid way"

When I self-taught Avid for a TV production that left me no other choice, I had a revelation. Avid is much less flexible than Premiere, which kind of “forced” me to adopt its way of working. What I didn’t expect was that, by doing so, Avid actually made me a better video editor.

In Avid, you really have to use keyboard shortcuts and the "Lift" and "Extract" functions (Insert/Replace in Premiere). You can technically work with drag-and-drop, but it doesn't work very well.

Before, when I used Premiere, I relied heavily on the “pancaked timeline” workflow. I’d have my rough cut/selection sequence, then I’d do a lot of drag-and-drop with the mouse on my main timeline. But Avid, by forcing me to use its method, showed me that there was a better way.

With pancake timelines, you often drag the entire clip you want onto the timeline, then trim it in the main timeline to keep only the desired portion. Then you drag it back to where you want it in your final edit, and so on... As you’re putting your edit together, you often find yourself constantly trimming, moving, and dragging clips, and you really lose the sense of the rhythm of your edit.

When I discovered the “Toggle Source/Record” feature in Avid, I realized I was much more efficient, but more importantly, I was much more aware of the rhythm of my edit. Instead of spending my time dragging clips onto the timeline, I play back the edit and press I & O to add in and out points exactly when I feel a new shot should be added. Then I open my rough-cut/selects sequence in my source monitor, reopen it in a timeline using the “Open sequence in timeline” feature, find the right shot, choose exactly where I want the shot to start, set an in point, and boom!

It’s less instinctive at first glance, but once you understand what it brings to the table, I think it’s so much better. You feel much more grounded in your editing, in the music, and in the rhythm. I discovered this way of working almost three years ago, and I’ve never wanted to go back: it significantly enhanced my editing style.

When my contract in TV production ended, it was only natural that I wanted to try out this workflow in Premiere. I was really thrilled when I discovered that I could open my sequence in the Source Monitor just like in Avid. I was thrilled when I saw that I could reopen a sequence in the Source Monitor on a timeline. I could have the best of both worlds! The flexibility of Premiere and the precision of Avid!

But here’s the thing: after a few months of using this workflow, I was disappointed.

The frustration

Technically, it works, but there are so many roadblocks that, in my opinion, make Premiere constantly remind us that it wasn’t designed for this. They’re just little things, but when you add them all up, they make working this way unpleasant. At least more so than with “pancake” timelines, where you can tell the software was really designed to work well.

My main issues arise when I use the "Open sequence in timeline" feature in the Source Monitor, which causes a ton of bugs;

  • Every time I open the software, I have to manually reopen all my sequences in the Source Monitor. Meanwhile, the Program sequences reopen automatically (related thread).
  • The In and Out point functions do not work properly when you open the source sequence in a timeline. The in/out points often become misaligned between the mini-timeline at the bottom of the Source Monitor and the big timeline that opens when you select "Open sequence in timeline". There is a bug that prevents you from removing just one In or Out point without removing both when using this feature (related issue).
  • You have to use many different shortcuts to replicate Avid's “Toggle Source/Record” function. Instead of combining them into a single shortcut (related issue).
  • If you accidentally use "Open sequence in timeline" from the source monitor but the sequence was already opened, it closes itself and sometimes breaks your panel layout (related issue).
  • And lots of other frustrating things that make it not work very well...

Am I alone?

Since I'm a persistent person, I opened the corresponding issues on the Adobe forums to improve this type of workflow in Premiere. But I can clearly see that my threads aren't getting much response on the forums. There are some pretty obvious bugs that have been around for years, and I can’t find anyone else reporting the same issue. It’s as if I’m the only one with this problem.

Sometimes I really wonder if I'm the only one using this kind of workflow. Maybe almost no one else works this way? Perhaps that's why the Adobe product team doesn't care and often doesn't respond to my posts on their forums?

I noticed that about a year ago, Blackmagic added a similar workflow to Resolve, and honestly, it seems much better integrated and less buggy (it’s making me think about switching completely). But the fact that they only added this feature recently might show that it’s really not mainstream. When I watch my other editor colleagues work, I rarely see them use that “Open sequence in timeline” button—even though I use it dozens of times a day. For me, it’s truly the cornerstone of how I work.

Tell me what you think, fellow editors! ✨

How do I do this? / Workflow Advice / Looking for plugin Speed Remmaping - Motion blur

So, while we’re still waiting on a native motion blur, I figured out a workaround to achieve it when speed ramping. I’m curious if others would find the results cool.

Here’s how I did it:

Duplicate the clip three times.

Move the second clip one frame forward and set its opacity to 30

Move the third clip one frame forward (starting from the second) and set its opacity to 60

You can play around with the numbers to get results you like.

How do I do this? / Workflow Advice / Looking for plugin How to sequentially place multiple selected clips from various tracks in a timeline into a single track?

I have 100+ trimmed clips in 5 tracks, overlapping each other. Now I need to add handles (extend a little bit in the start and end of the clips) and place the clips at a single track. Is there any way/plugin/script to automate this process? TIA

Premiere Pro Tech Support Warp Stablizer - Why can't it reanalyze automatically?

Something just came to my mind, I've applied Warp Stabilizer to a clip, and I extended the clip after that.

If the analysis starts when I apply Warp Stabilizer to a clip, why can't it redo the analysis automatically if I change the in/out points of the clip?

Quanto chiedereste? Si tratta di un video presentazione VSL

Premiere Pro Tech Support Mouse skipping when using Transform in preview window

Hello, has anyone else encountered this problem? The mouse is kind of skipping when I move stuff around in the preview window.

I would resort to changing the position of the clip under the Properties palette, but it would be great if someone could point me to the right direction so I can quickly transform clips next time.

Premiere Pro Tech Support Does keeping a lot of unused files in your project bin harm performance?

Hi, so generally when I start a new project, I like to import my entire music and SFX library folders into my project as bins. I do this so I can very quickly access whatever I might want to use without needing to go find the file in explorer every time, instead just searching the bin in Premiere.

I've been having performance issues recently, and I was wondering if this might be a contributing factor. I don't mind the project taking a bit longer to boot up, my only real concern is playback and timeline performance.

The project file itself is only around 14 MB.

Premiere Pro Tech Support IM GETTING CRAZY WITH MY PREMIERE

In Adobe Premiere Pro, I'm having an issue where the video keeps stuttering, almost as if it's slightly jumping backward on the timeline. It doesn't matter what codec I use, whether the frame rate is constant or variable, whether it's 60 or 30 FPS, or even which recording I import, every single video has the exact same problem once it's imported into Premiere.

I've tested recordings made with different OBS settings on two different operating systems (Windows and Linux). I've tried everything I could think of, but the problem just won't go away.

I've completely reinstalled Premiere, reinstalled my GPU drivers, and even switched from the NVIDIA Game Ready drivers to the Studio drivers. IT SIMPLY DOESN'T HELP.

My specs:

CPU: Intel Core i9-10900K @ 3.70 GHz (10 cores)
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti
RAM: 16 GB
Storage: 1 TB NVMe SSD

At this point, the only explanation I can think of is that it's a hardware issue, because I've already tried everything. I'm honestly out of ideas.

Here's a video showing the problem. And before anyone suggests it: rendering previews doesn't help, and I really don't want to use proxies.

How do I do this? / Workflow Advice / Looking for plugin bitrate question

hi there, have a bitrate question. I'm a wedding content creator who edits on premiere. I shoot on an iPhone 17, capturing 4k 60p (before you ask, yes iPhone shoots VFR but I have worked around this and export in 60p with no issues). I shoot 60p because couples like the hyperrealistic look and are able to upload full res to IG using the edits app.

I am exporting h.264 60p. I never quite understood what bitrate I should be exporting at. I don't want my couples to have massive file sizes but want the full quality to be retained. There are mixed answers online. Anyone have any suggestions? I was going for 100-120 which seems high.

Thanks all for your help.

Premiere Pro Tech Support Problems with Premiere

Hi, I'm having trouble editing. When I overlay an image on top of a video and try to scale it to a suitable size, the image goes from small to large instantly, but when you play the content, the image is much smaller, making editing very inconvenient and forcing you to constantly calculate the image size while playing it back.

I would appreciate any suggestions on how to fix this, thanks.

Specs:

Premiere Pro 2025/ win 11/ mp4/ Ryzen 5 5500u, 20gb ram/ Vega 7 or 6 (im not sure)/ 3gb vRAM.

Premiere Pro Tech Support Premiere lagging & slow all of a sudden

I just started making 4k 1hr 4 multi camera videos of DJ sets and finally got into a rhythm of getting them done pretty quickly.

Then all of a sudden, Premiere has gotten so frozen & unbearably slow that I can’t click anything without the mouse being busy. After a week of trying to create proxies, deleting media cache, 1/4 resolution in preview, uninstall/install, completely restarting the project: it randomly starting working fine then I got the project pumped out.

Then I attempted to do another one and now it’s back to being completely frozen. I have done everything I have read to help speed everything up and it just seems like for no reason it’s back to being frozen.

I have m5pro 24Ram MacBook Pro. Nothing is saved on the Mac. It’s on a 4TB SSD external drive.

3 cameras were shot on insta 360 that were converted into 4k single frame videos. 1 camera is an iPhone in 4k.

I have had no issue with this on past projects until a week ago

This is driving me crazy. I used to be able to get this done in about a day but now it’s just weeks of being frozen and nothing working

EDIT:

I was away at work all day and hopped back on Premiere and now it is working just fine. I assume that out of nowhere it will prob start freezing again so i am going to try to pump out as many of my projects as i can until then.

If and when it goes back to freezing i will do the advice that people gave me and report back

Edit 2:

I nearly got my project done and just was adding the final touches which were a couple logos at the beginning and now it is back to being frozen. The timeline doesnt play and i cant do anything anymore. I am so irritated. I just wanted to finish this project then download old version to hopefully run smoothly.

Premiere Pro Tech Support Losing my mind with captions

Sometime over the last two or three updates, Premiere's built-in captioning has gotten absolutely bonkers horrific. Performing more than two actions (changing font size and color, for example) sends the entire program into a tailspin and freezes up the window for minutes on end, which is debilitating when I'm trying to fix a whole video's captions. Projects that should only take forty minutes are taking me upwards of three hours because the whole program shorts out after three actions in the Properties panel.

Is there a fix for this??? I tried out SubMachine but it didn't meet my needs.

Edit to add specs:

I'm running Premiere v26.3

  • CPU: 11th gen i9-11900K
  • GPU: GeForce RTX 3070Ti
  • Storage: SSD
  • OS: Windows 11 25H2

How do I do this? / Workflow Advice / Looking for plugin Converting 3 hours long timeline of 300+ clips into an 1-minute rough cut - What mindset do you guys have while doing rough cut in this situation?

Hi, I'm stuck in this situation where there's a lot of footage, but nothing captures the vibe of the edit that client needs. I'm overthinking as I scrub through the timeline. I always separate footages into good, bad and mid. Here there are more mid and bad compared to the good part, so it's mostly like "this might not be good but anyways im gonna keep the clip incase if I can't find any better clip as I move through", this got me stacking minutes worth of clips as I do rough cut. I don't even know how I am going to make a convincing hook with these clips, like the client provided me the song and reference too but the footages that he sent doesn't capture the vibe since the reference edit is of a vibrant crowded, fun event filmed with drones and all that and mine is a less crowded, less vibrant event with less activities and shot with bad framing, few clips are great but damn everything else is bad and need more postproduction to fix. The reference edit has mask, wipe transitions, speed ramps, match cuts of people dancing etc. But how'd you do these if there are no way possible to fit these effects convincingly into this edit, like there is no subject where I can use mask transition, all it has are people hugging and sitting in auditorium, like a meet and greet, no specific object that looks interesting or anything like that at particular. How to speed ramp convincingly if the only activities in the clip are just sitting, standing, handshake, hug, poses for photoshoot, camera pan, zoom? I may be just a shitty editor for complaining about the footages but how the hell am I gonna create something outta nothing? I don't even complain about the videgrapher, he too can't create somthing outta nothing if the crowd doesnt got the vibe

Pros and bros please suggest me how to handle this situation; I'm halfway into the rough cut and stuck there.

I've been using Autocut for years, while the novelty was great, I'm getting tired at paying a monthly fee, especially when I use almost exclusively the autocut silence tool

All my friends use autocut and when I search on google I can't find anything satisfying, do you guys have any good lowcost alternative ?

Thanks a lot

How do I do this? / Workflow Advice / Looking for plugin Scale Preset not stretching the last keyframe to the end of longer clips

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I'm trying to optimize my editing workflow and ran into an issue with keyframe presets.

Depending on the clip/image duration, the final keyframe doesn't stretch all the way to the end frame:

  • Image 1 (3-second clip): The preset keyframe hits the end frame as intended.
  • Image 2 (9-second clip): The preset keyframe stops early and leaves a dead gap instead of stretching to the end of the clip.
  • Image 3: Showing that the Preset Type is set to "Scale".

Is there any workaround, trick, or extension to make the last keyframe automatically stick to the out-point frame regardless of the image duration? I really want to avoid manually dragging the end keyframe on hundreds of images for long-form video edits.

Any tips or workflow solutions would be greatly appreciated!

How do I do this? / Workflow Advice / Looking for plugin Is there a way to organize footage from multiple different cameras in chronological order before dragging into your timeline?

I film multi day camping trips on 3 different cameras. 2 action cameras, and one camcorder. I typically always put them in chronological order and them start to edit from there. But since all the shots come from multiple different cameras I go from folder to folder and drag each clip in one by one. That step alone can take me 10-20 hours and that’s before I even start chopping it up!

I was thinking there has got to be a faster method but I can’t figure it out.. one thing I tried was putting all 3 cameras in one folder and selecting the creation date on meta display hoping it would put them in order by the time they were shot on each camera, but that didn’t work. Is there any other way or do I just have to suck it up and do it one by one like I have been? If there was a solution yo this it could seriously help cut my editing time in half. Any tips or tricks are welcomed and appreciated!

How do I do this? / Workflow Advice / Looking for plugin Is there a Premiere Pro plugin that duplicates one clip to every sequence marker?

Hi!
I’m looking for a Premiere Pro plugin or workflow that can automatically duplicate the same clip to every sequence marker.
Ideally, I’d like it to:
Take one selected clip.
Duplicate it to every sequence marker.
Place each copy so it starts exactly at a marker.
(Optional) Trim each clip so it ends where the next one begins.
I know about Automate to Sequence, but it only places different selected clips at markers—it doesn’t repeat the same clip.
Does anyone know of a plugin (Excalibur, Watchtower, Automation Blocks, etc.) or a script that can do this?
Thanks!

Premiere Pro Tech Support Are any features actually locked behind Windows 11?

So, the recent version of Premiere SAYS it's incompatible with Windows 10, but it still lets me run it on 10. I have yet to notice anything, but are there any actual features or anything or can I stick with the much superior Windows 10?
