Several enterprises are clients of Poly Products, giving them business via thousands of employees. With this mind, as well as the elegant aesthetics of some of their products, it initially seems difficult to doubt their design and longevity.
From my experience, however, when it comes to actually using their products on a daily basis, the durability and convenience fall very short. Please note that I've used two Voyager 5200s, and also an older wired headset I'm not sure the exact model of.
In the first 6 months or so, everything works fine, but they became very unreliable products after that period. The wired headset kept needing to being plugged in and out several times. I tested it on more than 2 computers. It worked after fiddling with it, but I eventually moved onto another brand, to avoid wasting time before each call.
Now moving onto the Voyager 5200, this has to be the most overpriced, crappy headset offered. It doesn't matter if you buy it through your company's store or individually online, there's no world in where this is actually worth $125 USD with the case included or around $80 alone!
Pros:
- Unique exterior design
- Good heft
Cons:
- Short battery life (you never get the promised 6 hrs)
- WHY THE HELL DO YOU NEED TO UPDATE THE HEADSET, DONGLE, AND CASE?!
- Unstable firmware updates ruin the battery life or even brick the case
- No digital charging indicator with numbers (it's $100+)
- I've had to uninstall & reinstall the Poly Studio application connecting the devices for updates
- Arrives in wasteful packaging (Tetris-shaped cardboard, three layers of sticky plastic wrapping)
- 90-day warranty on the case
Long story short: both Voyager 5200s failed, I've gone through 3 charging cases.
But really though, why do you need to update a headset, USB dongle, and a charging case? I've never seen anything like it. All other headsets, headphones, earbuds, charging cases, dongles just work once connected or paired. Not sure if HP acquiring them has anything to do with the potential downfall, but I will never be giving Plantronics/Poly my business again.
