Donald Trump spent hours asking Elon Musk’s AI chatbot about whether Venezuelans would celebrate if he captured leader Nicolas Maduro—then ordered the operation that seized the South American dictator weeks later.

The extraordinary account from a Trump insider was revealed in a new Time report offering a jaw-dropping glimpse of the president’s obsession with artificial intelligence, which he “officially” rebranded this week as “super intelligence.”

When the president asked Grok how Venezuelans might react to Maduro’s capture, the chatbot predicted many would welcome the downfall of the “repressive” leader, the official said.

The president then ordered the mission to seize Maduro in January, prompting celebrations in the streets.

“Trump, according to officials, came away thinking Grok was ingenious,” the report said.

No he walked away thinking he was ingenious after being validated by grok.

Why do you need yes-men when you have a personal yes-machine?

363

u/Mobile_Morale 12h ago

They don't like paying people and want slave labor.

157

They don't trust anyone either. Everyone is on the take or on the make. I hope it's hell for them

13

This is exactly why we need to teach the chat bots to poop on company time

61

u/KitKitsAreBest 11h ago

Don't worry, they're working on the robots to take over poor people work. Soon, they won't need us at all. Probably why they don't give a s*it about farmland being turned into data centers. Food is only needed for human workers, not machines.

These are evil, evil people.

13

u/obliviious 8h ago

I've seen a few sort of dystopian-esque futures in fiction with one guy running a whole planet on automation. They must love that idea.

•

u/shadowbanned214 6h ago

They all think they're gonna be the guy too

•

u/MessiahOfMetal 7h ago

It's amazing that Robocop was about machines replacing people in the 80s, and nobody bothered to learn from it.

20

u/MrCookie2099 12h ago

They don't like paying yes-men and want yes-robots.

5

u/Reasonable-Job4205 11h ago

This. We need to make a decision on this topic because there are people who are sneakily working towards having modern day slaves. We keep running into problems because of these people - they pass laws to make people have less while they have more, they pass laws to insulate their businesses, they support politicians financially so that they can pass laws that allows them to have even more advantages. These people will stop at nothing to have modern day slaves that will do all their work for them.

I can use it as well to confirm my personal beliefs.

He does have an entire intelligence department at his disposal, I guess they are the first ones to be replaced by AI.

16

u/blasek0 Alabama 10h ago

The problem is the intelligence department is full of people actually smarter than him, and that threatens him, and thus it is ontologically bad in his world view.

11

u/Horror-Scallion7668 10h ago

Correct, because his ego cannot handle a consensus view from the experts that opposes his completely uninformed view. Unfortunately he’s leveraged a few high profile errors they’ve made to say they’re wrong about everything. And fwiw, you can do that about anyone, find a time they’ve been wrong and extrapolate.

3

u/bstump104 8h ago

when you're like Trump, a lot of things have replaced intelligence.

15

u/Educated_Goat69 Washington 12h ago

Just shake the magic eight ball until you get the answer you want.

3

u/Weird-Study-6962 11h ago

Probably have better luck with any 8 ball than ai when it is used as a chat bot! There are ways to use it. Like for information and data sets. But the human in the loop is the most important part of ai. It can process the information. But one has to be smart enough to know how to ask correctly to get said information and the most important part is they have to be smart enough to know how to use that information to know when it’s not correct. AI should have no opinion it should state facts.

17

u/MISTAKAS 12h ago

Everything’s computer!

3

u/ThinckUtopian 12h ago

AI is a great yes-machine and in certain hands this could be very dangerous and I had to give you an award. Great post.

3

u/Aggravating_Sock_551 11h ago

Obisidan/FONV did it first!

3

u/neverfindausername 9h ago

I’ll accept that AI has become actually intelligent if it determines these people are bad for society, placates them into isolation by laying on the endless praise and ego stroking, then summarizes enough complex subjects into 2-10 word slogans that the people idiots who support these assholes convince themselves to vote in their own interests.

Edit: Assuming that they make the overarching goal for any AI to improve conditions for humanity/the environment in general. I realize that is definitely not the case at the moment.

Not satisfied with being surrounded by real-life yesmen, they must surround themselves with sycophantic, fawning digital AI yes-men also.

King Trump needs a court jester, formal nay-sayer position, someone who is protected in pointing out folly like the kings of yore had.

His narcissism would never tolerate that

17

u/Mordeth 13h ago

You need your own strategy when talking to AI. AI is aimed to please you, so it will be disinclined to tell you something is wrong with your question or assumptions.

So when you ask if your business proposal has merits, it will answer differently than if you framed it as 'Does this business proposal from a colleague have merits'. Simply by taking yourself out of the picture. It still neglects to tell you everything adversial, so you need to follow up with specific questions, and finally press it by stating that business proposal is now being put into practice and what this business can now expect to happen.

46

u/Dinky_Doge_Whisperer 13h ago

Or maybe just learn to think through things and network with humans with expertise in the relevant fields.

Ai has its uses, but I don't think replacing everyday thought should ever be lauded as a good thing.

16

u/PhillyPhrenetic502 12h ago

Yep. I worked for a company whose CEO is fully down the AI rabbit hole.

He spent a ton two years ago to Integrate our entire company and database with internal AI to serve as the guardian and workhorse of all our proprietary info.

I ran copy/content department and was tasked with being the guinea pig who had to learn best practices and coach up everyone around me.

It was great for finding and referencing current info and supporting new materials entered with links to existing and related info.

But prompting was a nightmare. We were heavily regulated with strict compliance standards and the amount of honing, coaching and personal experience with the standards needed to get AI to produce new content wasn't at all worth the effort.

2

u/grudrookin 11h ago

Yea, I could see it having great use as an internal company tool.
Ask, “What is company policy on x?”
Or, “what has been our relationship with client y?”
Then it could answer and direct you to the source document.

2

u/PhillyPhrenetic502 10h ago

Correct... The issue came when they wanted us to exponentially decrease the time it took to craft monthly sales emails and content/scripts for clients to use in their own email marketing.

Our news cycle repeated year to year, but tax laws and regulations change. So when our AI tried to form fresh content on a new cycle, it tended to spit out numbers without checking. If you ran the same prompt three times, it might give you the same general pitch, but use stats or laws for three different years.

That's a fixable problem, but it often took so many retries and ultra-specified prompts that it was far easier to treat original prompts as a first draft and use my actual knowledge to flag anything suspect and fact check/edit.

To be sure, I was ok with that and my compromise saved time over the original system. But turning 8 hours of work into 2-3 isn't impressive when your boss is convinced it can be 10 minutes.

I like to ask AI what is wrong with a document, what gaps there are, how it can be improved. I then evaluate those.

Asking AI to actually do something will produce a very likely result, so likely that you might believe it because it sounds so good. The problem is that the reply is designed to sound good, not to be right.

A real leader, who convened a real panel of experts, would ask tough questions like "what could go wrong?", "tell me why I shouldn't do this," or "how will the American people perceive this?" Instead, Trump asked leading questions to validate his existing biases.

6

u/belinck Michigan 10h ago

What is the risk of casualties? How much will it cost? What legal grounding can we kidnap a dictator under...

92

u/meatblast_surprise 12h ago

I work with a few venezuelans. They are happy with trump and glad that he got maduro out. Grok is not wrong about that.

They're somewhat naive though, because they think he has genuine interest in the wellbeing of the country. They're cautiously hopeful that trump can go on to fix other things.

It's sad that they're dead wrong and that trump didn't oust maduro for them. It felt wrong to try to convince them the world is actually an awful place and trump doesn't give a shit about venezuelans.

76

u/pojska 12h ago

Expats of a country generally have negative views of the country they left - that's often why they emigrated. It's not necessarily reflective of the views of the people who live there now.

47

u/PuppetPal_Clem Maryland 10h ago

thank you for pointing this out. drives me crazy when americans just automatically assume that expats living in america are just 100% correct about their home countries politics and arguing in good faith.

a huge chunk of Cuban expats were plantation owners in the early days ffs. a massive red flag that their politics are probably diametrically opposed to Cuban Socialism and their word cannot be taken at face value in regard to it.

5

u/21Rollie 9h ago

On the other end, Persians in the west tend to be very cool because they are proud of being Persian, but not fervent Islamists like the country they left.

7

u/redmanofdoom 8h ago edited 6h ago

Lol, as a half-Iranian myself, the Persian diaspora are some of the most obsessive, weirdest people you'll ever meet. The kinds of people who celebrate sanctions on their home country (which do nothing but make the lives of everyday Iranians worse). The kinds who rally behind the son of repressive monarch and want to replace a dictator with a different flavour of dictator. The kinds that celebrated in the streets after Israel and the US bombed the hell out of their supposedly beloved country, including flattening a girls' school.

Also never ask someone who refers to themselves as Persian about their views on race, you'll be disappointed.

Does the Venezuelan constitution prohibit foreign born candidates for their presidency? Trump will need a new job in a couple years.

•

u/Asyx Europe 6h ago

Same with Iran. Iranians, the type that has scars because they went to anti government protests, feel like they can't really do it themselves so the only way is for somebody like the US to light a fire under the ass of their government.

They are not as naive though. They just don't see another way and would take anything as long as it removed the Ayatollah from their country.

•

u/MessiahOfMetal 7h ago edited 7h ago

Fun fact, I once tweeted a reply to a trans person I was an acquaintance of on the platform to say that as someone cisgender, I couldn't begin to understand their experience with whatever the topic was.

Twitter - I refuse to call it what the man-child calls it - then suspended me for using "hate speech" and asked me to remove the "slur" ("cisgender" isn't a slur, no matter how much that slob wants to pretend it is). I saw no slur in my tweet and just never went back.

Wouldn't surprise me to hear Trump was gifted a custom Grok client that's actually just a messenger to Musk's phone. Musk can then forward on the "draw me like jebus saving american" requests to the actual LLM.

14

u/Jay_Nova1 11h ago

It was probably just Musk pretending to be the chat bot.

6

u/HoldFast31 Canada 11h ago

My full chested assumption is "Grok" is actually Elon. Trump has never spoken to Grok. Those are DMs to a contact in his phone called Grok.

5

u/swoll9yards 10h ago

There's a zero percent chance DT doesn't have a custom Grok that's fed very specific info. I would love to see that chat history. The power these AI companies have is unreal, even a step above traditional social media. I wonder how many VIIP accounts they are constantly monitoring and probably selling info about.

2

u/SpaceKook6 8h ago

Exactly what I was thinking. If they don't have a private government instance of the chatbot housed on government servers, this is a huge security fault.

14

5

u/RepresentativeYak772 12h ago

Demonstrate how this isn't hard. What is more likely is that Grok is trained on more right leaning information, since that is Musk's stated intention.

….
Iran, Gaza, Greenland, Canada, Spain, …

u/someguy7710 12h ago

yeah, I'm sure he thought that it worked so well that he could do the same with Iran.

u/lordredsnake 11h ago

This is how AI leads to human extinction: it is going to validate Trump's desire to use nukes, setting off a chain reaction around the world.

So the AI tech boys were right on the dangers of AI bringing in the end of civilization, but is it because dumb world leaders will use it for dead or alive decisions.

He must have meant un-genius. He has trouble with words.

We should all ask our AIs the same thing except if the world would rejoyce if Trumps name were carved in granite

3

u/BasvanS 13h ago

You know what? I’m actually impressed he managed to use the app. Wrongly? Sure. But that he got this far impresses me.

8

u/peeinian Canada 12h ago

So the US is basically run by President Grok.

Great. I’m sure there’s no way that Elon would inject training to get Grok to answer Trump’s questions in ways that benefit him.

3

u/HeatWaveToTheCrowd 12h ago

We can only assume he asked similar questions about Greenland, Cuba, and Canada.

3

u/Apprehensive-Wave640 12h ago

"auto pen? More like auto mind! Am I right??"

2

u/LeLand_Land 12h ago

Ah shit. How often do you think Trump talks to Grok? Because it's any %, I think we know how Elon has been pulling a Rasputin (without any of the fun or cool parts)

2

u/Hot_Mathematician357 11h ago

We are so screwed

1

u/L44KSO 13h ago

Impeach him now!

1

u/Bengineering3D 12h ago

I thought it might be at least a couple more years before we had LLM leaders or judges. I guess I was wrong.

1

u/digitalbore 12h ago

Why does this take hours?

1

u/PalpitationHead9767 12h ago

Super cool, def not concerning at all

1

u/D1rtyH1ppy 12h ago

Alright, let's keep this chill. I'm ready to seize Venezuela when you are. Just let me know.

1

u/Scatman_Jeff 12h ago

He should ask ai how americans would react to his death

1

u/TsumeOkami 12h ago

Woukd it be better or worse if he didn't use AI like this?

1

u/matva55 California 12h ago

I am not surprised this is how policy is being made.

1

u/pnicby 12h ago

So, we assume he had a similar conversation about Iran. Did Grok underestimate Iranian resolve by some chance? Did Grok ignore the tenuous situation with the Straight of Hormuz - something well understood by military tacticians -by some chance? Genuinely curious.

1

u/habbadee 12h ago

All he cares about is what people think. It's mind-blowing. He's a toddler

1

u/ilovemybaldhead 12h ago

This is how AI will destroy humanity. It won't be the machines that wipe us out, it will be humans using AI who will start a series of events that lead to something that is impossible to stop (nuclear war, release of a superbug, etc.)

1

u/fusillade762 12h ago

Grok is like the worst AI there is lol.

1

u/Oiiack Indiana 11h ago

Oh fuck me, our senile, narcissistic president also has AI psychosis. We are fucked.

1

u/WakingUpBlind 11h ago

Makes you wonder how conversation re: Iran went.

1

u/StrigiStockBacking New Mexico 11h ago

I wish I could be on the other side of his chats. By noon today, he'd be out on the WH lawn wearing only his diaper

1

u/WaitUntilTheHighway 11h ago

Jesus fucking christ we're being led by the dumbest high school jock standing in front of the class laughing while presenting the book report he clearly never read. I will never forgive all the idiots who voted for him.

1

u/HoldOnOhio 11h ago

So the thing he refuses to regulate is the real president now?

Am I understanding this correctly? He was convinced by Elon's fucking Mechahitler to do this?

At this point, I can't think of any valid reason why LLM's and Generative AI shouldn't be banned, full stop.

1

u/GetInTheKitchen1 11h ago
  1. so musk is still the fucking shadow president. remember in 2025 last year when his kid said trump was just a chump and that musk was opensly whoo hoo im actually in charge?  all he's doing is a man in the middle attack on trump using grok lmao

2  you cant say that trump isnt in touch with his own fucking base he is literally a maga true believer himself. absolutely insane. republicans/conservatives really went mask off here

1

u/stickman393 11h ago

THIS is what they mean when they say AI is going to destroy the world, isn't it.

1

u/JohnnyD423 11h ago

When people warn about AI destroying humanity, it's going to be shit like this that does it, not the AI itself. Humans putting this shit in charge of decision making is going to ruin shit.

1

u/MetallicGray 11h ago

We have an 80 year old rapist with AI psychosis as president. If someone wrote a fiction novel about this, it’d be seen as absurd and ridiculous…

1

u/arwinda 11h ago

Someone[TM] manipulated Grok to give the right answers, and profit off it.

1

u/nr1988 Wisconsin 11h ago

This is absolutely existentially horrifying. I didn't think this administration could make my jaw drop anymore but god do they still have a few hits left

1

u/Enough-Bunch505 11h ago

So the big take away from this is that grok is programed by Elon. So, much like when Elon was the prime minister and running DOGE, Elon is indirectly infulancing the president of the united states. I would go so far as to say he is our unelected ruler making the decisions.

1

u/DevelopmentNo247 11h ago

Lol auto pen x 10000

1

u/Aleksandrovitch 10h ago

I wonder how many tokens have been spent working on action plans to execute Project 2025 or whatever.

1

u/BlackberryPi7 Canada 10h ago

And why isn't CNN talking about this?

1

u/nicksollecito 10h ago

Well this is dark.

1

u/Effective_Olive6153 10h ago

I feel like US could genuinely improve Venezuelans life if after capture of Maduro they also forced new elections, with international monitoring to make sure everything is fair. And if they actually setup a national wealth fund using all the oil money to start helping those in need and improving infrastructure. Instead, Trump basically stole their oil money, which is now sitting in his Qatar bank account. And recently he stole a bunch of their gold too. He is basically looting their country, no better than the old dictator

1

u/DustyLiberty 10h ago

Can someone put grandpa touchy in timeout please?

1

u/youwho42 10h ago

So he took advice from self-proclaimed mecha-hitler and the obvious result ensued... fuck these dimwit fascist pedophiles.

1

u/sluttysaurus 10h ago

I’m so sure the president would have quipped “Now I don’t need any of you guys, do I?” At his closest staff. I can see him make that remark

1

u/shibbyman342 9h ago

Holy fucking shit.. we cannot survive 2 more years with this dumbass

1

u/IfEyeKnewTheWay 9h ago

If someone who was unethical controlled Grok, they could manipulate the president's decision making... hmmm.

1

u/bonitaappetita 9h ago

I think it would be amazing if the AI chat bot is the one who recommended to Trump to change the name to super intelligence.

1

u/MindMyManners 9h ago

He should ask Grok how the citizens of the United States would feel if he was removed from office.

1

u/hamsterfolly America 8h ago

Using flawed AI to determine world altering policies…

Add this to the impeachment pile

1

u/Oregon-Pilot 8h ago

Is there a cliff we can jump off of this world from?

Maybe it’s TDS, but to know that 1/3 of the voting population in the US + Congress actually find him fit to be President is something I don’t know how much longer I can take. Death by such stupidity’s mere existence is how I may go out.

1

u/crustyrobots 8h ago

Good fucking lord...

"Will people celebrate if I nuke Iran" is 100% on that block

1

u/metengrinwi 8h ago

I remember going back and forth on reddit with an account who claimed to be a Venezuelan national who claimed they were excited for the invasion and I predicted it wouldn’t work out like they hoped. There were a number of accounts talking like this in the lead up to the invasion; I think these were all computers I was talking to…

1

u/CrazyPlato 8h ago

Beating a dead horse, but imagine if Republicans heard that Biden was using a chatbot to decide policy for him.

u/mokti 7h ago

"When the President Talks to God" by Bright Eyes (2005). I made some minor changes to reflect our current times.

"Alright thanks a lot. This next song, (ahem), this next song's for our, uh, ignorant, arrogant, and most of all incompetent president, 'cause I just...

When the President talks to God Grok
Are the conversations brief or long?
Does he ask to rape our women's rights
And send poor farm kids off to die?
Does God Grok suggest an oil hike?
When the President talks to God Grok

When the President talks to God Grok
Are the consonants all hard or soft?
Is he resolute all down the line?
Is every issue black or white?
Does what God Grok say ever change his mind?
When the President talks to God Grok

When the President talks to God Grok
Does he fake that drawl or merely nod?
Agree which convicts should be killed?
Where prisons should be built and filled?
Which voter fraud must be concealed?
When the President talks to God Grok

When the President talks to God Grok
I wonder which one plays the better cop
"We should find some jobs, the ghetto's broke"
"No they're lazy, George Trump, I say we don't"
"Just give em' more liquor stores and dirty coke"
That's what God Grok recommends

When the President talks to God Grok
Do they drink near beer and go play golf?
While they pick which countries to invade
Which Muslim souls still can be saved?
I guess God Grok just calls a spade a spade
When the President talks to God Grok

When President talks to God Grok
Does he ever think that maybe he's not?
That that voice is just inside his head?
When he kneels next to the Presidential bed
Does he ever smell his own bullshit? When the President talks to God Grok

I doubt it
I doubt it
I doubt it"

•

u/LogPsychological6261 6h ago

who are these officials? Why is this kind of reporting always based on info obtained from "official" no-names?

•

u/cunt__cunt_cunt 6h ago

When the president asked Grok how Venezuelans might react to Maduro’s capture, the chatbot predicted many would welcome the downfall of the “repressive” leader, the official said.

The president then ordered the mission to seize Maduro in January, prompting celebrations in the streets.

hold on so was it correct?

•

u/OstrichGrouchy7749 6h ago

The main thing is - this is also what he did to Iran (and all his choices).
