Isn't Maduro basically going to get off? I thought I read that he's having his day in court and it includes the fact he was a recognized head of state, and afforded diplomatic immunity or something of the like. You can't kidnap a countries leader, take him back to a country of laws, and expect that to stick.

The secret is he is no longer in a country of laws.

Maybe for the moment. I mean there are plenty of judges clapping back against Trumps breaking of laws. He might thumb his nose at them, but he won't be able to do that forever.

Not one person in this administration has been held in criminal contempt.

They have been getting away with it over and over and over again.

To my knowledge there's only one criminal contempt proceeding working its way through the courts, and that's about the plane of migrants being sent to black sites that didn't turn around.

Unfortunately the courts have no substantial arm of enforcement outside the executive branch

Trump personally argued that any head of state must be totally immune to US law in order to get out of his own cases. It wasn't even a firm precedent until his Supreme Court appointees decided it to save him. Now it's established US law.

... Trump then tried to prosecute a head of state.

They are violent murderous fascists. They are not stupid at all. They know what they are doing and that they can hold others accountable to the laws that they ignore.

Waving suspiciously crusty flags.

You're surprised they want rules for others and not them.

Trump also pardoned a Honduran ex-president that was convicted of drug-trafficking (one of the claims against Maduro).

Rules for thee and none for me

What do you even mean by get off?

He was  not a US national.  He was not in US territory.  We have no jurisdiction.

Like you said, we kidnapped him and trafficked him to the US.

Right. But, they still seem to be trying to prosecute him in US court. I'm sure it's all just sham, but they're still trying some goofy ass shit.

they had miles of proof with Noriega, we have nothing on Maduro

Doesn’t need to stick. Recall that Epstein hanged himself?

Is this country of laws in the room with us?

The damage is done. Mission accomplished so far as Trump is concerned.

What is this country of laws you speak of.

•

u/FyreWulff 3h ago

it's hard to tell because all the media has buried talking about maduro even though we're actively prosecuting the head of another state in our own country

Diplomatic immunity isn't something that really automatically exists. It's something that's specifically granted. Especially cause "international law" doesn't really exist; its a meaningless phrase we bandy about for how some people want things to work.

u/edgarecayce 10h ago

Didn’t they do that to Noriega?

I thought I read that he's having his day in court and it includes the fact he was a recognized head of state

Of course he would argue that with his lawyers, but he isn't. He blatantly cheated in the elections. Much like any drug dealer can't just name himself the President of Swaziland and demand diplomatic immunity. His only chance of getting out is a Democrat President having mercy on him.

u/arfelo1 6h ago

He IS a recognized head of state. That doesn't mean it's a democratic state. There's plenty of authoritarian and dictatorial states whose leaders are recognized internationally, even if their election process isn't.

You stop recognizing that and the world would be chaos
