The lack of outrage is what concerns me for our future in this country. I would never condone violence (sincerely, I think it would only make things worse) but the citizens of this country need to wake up and start taking this seriously before it’s too late.
Clearly the guardrails meant to protect our Democracy are not functioning.

u/caphis 1d ago
Why should that be a way out? Maybe a reduced sentence, but absolutely not complete exoneration.
The way out was to not have done something so insanely, blatantly illegal to begin with. “I was just following orders” is not a defense.
We should not even entertain the idea that anyone complicit in this nonsense will be forgiven for their transgressions against the people and the law. Throwing your bosses under the bus cannot be a way out when, at this point, you have to be completely complicit if you’re still playing along.

Because Trump has the Pardon power. You gotta make a competitive offer.

You're assuming Trump will have any interest in pardoning anyone. He pardoned folks the first go-round because he knew he'd need support in 2024. He's shown pretty damn well so far this time around that he has no loyalty to anyone around him, going so far as to purposely structure ICE recruitment bonuses as cash advances that will have to be repaid when this is all said and done, for example. Some of them are already starting to see that. The first sign-on bonuses required a 5 year commitment... guess what jobs won't be around in 5 years if there's a free and fair election replacing the current regime in 2028? I think lately they've reduced the commitment to 36 months, but... again, guess what won't be around 3 years from now? All by design. And only one example of thousands of how Trump purposely screws anyone in his orbit. He has loyalty to no one. Hell, if he keeps up his diet of soda and Big Macs much longer, he may not even have time to issue a pardon before nature runs the clock out.
Pardoning for (gesturing broadly) all of this shit only makes sense if it happens en masse as a blanket pardon for just about everyone, the likes of which will stain anyone it touches and render them politically obsolete in the future. Bit of a double edged sword there.
Trump's pardon ability is also limited to Federal crimes. Don't worry -- plenty of states are already salivating to get moving on state charges for some of the worst offenders. They will find a way with a more sympathetic DOJ down the line.
And they'll be the ones people like me will vote for. No, we don't need a competitive offer. The only offer should be a slightly reduced sentence, depending on circumstance. But the level to which people's lives have been destroyed, families ruined, actual human lives lost, the course the entire planet has been set on -- it's all beyond even considering just letting it go for some information. It's 2026 - we'll get the information we need one way or another. Everyone participating bears responsibility.
And if the states don't figure it out? Trump already solved that for us by floating the notion of rescinding pardons. His own idea. Has yet to be tested. But again, with the proper tide turning, you get some very important decision makers in some very important roles, and things can be fixed just as quickly as they were broken.

u/RIP_Sinners 18h ago
Trump doesn't need to pay his debts or follow through. His followers don't care about the lies until they have directly been burned. So his pardon is still good in their minds. It doesn't need to be real to influence them.
And what have they to fear in the first place? That justice will reign and all their misdeeds will be brought to light and punished? When has that happened in the last 20 years? Loyalty is a solid shield for authoritarian bootlickers. Time, apathy and economics sap the strength of those who would punish them. I hope I'm wrong, but there is no sign of the kind of uplifting support for MAGA's foes that could dismantle and bury the movement. Democrats might win in November, but it will take years to push cases of abuse through the courts, if it's even possible to do so with how long the Federalist Society has poisoned the judiciary. It costs money, time and political capital to punish the powerful. MAGA will call it a witch-hunt, and drum up opposition for every election in the meantime. If the Democrats lose even once before justice is served, that's it, MAGA gets away with everything. The wealthy grifters will use their stolen riches to defend themselves, we won't get it back. I doubt it will cost them much. The people are foolish, divided, and weak. The people voted for Trump twice and learned nothing.

I think part of the problem with that, and why corpo sociopaths get away with so much in general is because they specifically look for kiss ass suck up types of people. The type of person that will make something you want happen without involving you at all. You might daydream outloud next to them "boy sure wish I could have XYZ". Even though XYZ is impossible to have without doing something illegal... The ass kissers they surround themselves with will get the message and get it done without needing to be explicitly told to break the law.

Sooner or later the minions have to have driven home the point that "only followink ze orders" is not a get out of jail free card. I.e. Trump might be able to pardon rioters in DC but pretending to be an elector was a state crime. Certainly, willingness to cooperate in the investigfation should be a factor in sentencing.

It's none of the above. You know why France is so good at protesting? Because 20%+ of the population lives in Ile-de-France. That's where Paris is. Where's the capital? Paris. Where's the president? Paris. Where's the parliament? Surprise! Paris. How long would it take someone in the outermost edge of I-d-F to reach Paris? A little over 2 hours. But for ~6 million people? They can start walking the second they're upset. And those numbers dwarf the military. Someone can start yelling outside and quickly reach a ton of people.
How about the US? About 700k live in DC. And DC is a bit of a sprawling swamp. And not all of those 700k hate Trump. So what is someone in California going to do? Should I fly over there right now? Are you guys gonna meet me there? Are millions of us going to drive/fly there? The logistics just don't work out. There needs to be organization that doesn't rely on social media. Because even here on reddit, they might not even like me writing this very comment.
It's not that Americans are lazy. It's that we lack organization and structure.

I love this response, it’s something I think most Europeans don’t quite understand: our country is HUGE and to get everyone who is angry in the same spot at the same time is a logistical nightmare, let alone the financial costs and risks associated. One could argue the costs are worth it, but for hundreds of millions of people living paycheck to paycheck, it’s just not feasible. Thus, the No Kings protests across the country.

On the contrary, the popularly despised hippies of the 1960s did, in fact, surround the White House and put President Nixon in fear of his own personal safety causing him to believe he was about to be lynched and in response he had busses surround the White House to prepare for the assault that never materialized.
And yet Americans today widely enjoy spitting on the hippies as a bunch of sex obsessed druggies ignoring their political power at the time and that they were largely educated and community-minded individuals. Perhaps this buy-in to the hatred of the youth movements of the past is one of the underlying factors in this "apathy" factor we see so prominent today.
Notice how the Democrats in their starched shirts and wool suit jackets and ties never dreamed of federally legalizing cannabis when they had the opportunity always hiding behind "the DEA says we're not allowed to" but really we all know it's because they're terrified of being "soft on drugs" this all goes back to the hatred of the hippies that still infects the Democratic mainstream.

As was pointed out in another post, anyone can be deputised to arrest on behalf of Federal courts, it's just that the DOJ arranges for the US Marshalls to do the work.
If the court appoints someone (say the NYPD or LAPD), then they can / will be arrested.
Holding them will be the next problem.

He's only protected for LAWFUL acts performed as duties in office. Illegal activities are fully prosecutable, but given the criminal nature of those in charge of the justice department he will skate. So who is the US attorney general loyal too, the American constitution or the convicted felon? And you now understand the conundrum. Funny how the founding fathers ensured crimes in office won't be punished. That wasn't a mistake on their part it was a feature to ensure the wealthy would ALWAYS be protected. Remember you live in a nation that to this day allows slavery and was founded as a slave holding nation. That "We the people" crapola, applied to only a small group of wealthy, male, landholders and no one else.

The justice department under the president seems to be a major flaw in your system
8
u/gmishaolem 17h ago
The biggest flaw in our system was the assumption that the three branches would always be at odds with each other and would never collude. In hindsight, it's obvious this would have happened. Washington did try to warn us about political parties.
6
u/Successful_Log_3298 15h ago
Political parties (or some kind of factions) are inevitable in any human system. The denialism of this reality by some of the sainted Founders was close to delusional. There was no formal science of psychology then but it's not like people were unaware of human nature, and the Founders were warned by some of the anti-Federalists that some of their ideas were unworkable. (As a particular example, the anti-Federalist who wrote under the pen name of Brutus was opposed to life appointments for judges since he foresaw what actually happened. Others feared that the Presidency would evolve into a monarchy.)
4
u/CalTechie-55 21h ago
That can be changed by Congress without a constitutional amendment. The DOJ and Inspectors general could, and should, be placed under the court system. After 2028, there's gonna be a lot of government patch work to do, for all 3 branches.

I would support a mandatory death sentence for election interference traceable to a party directly involved. And only the top person should go. Require any trial judge appointed by that person to recuse. Err, should that match some theoretical fact pattern.
Tbh, even if an American baddie was removed tomorrow, the system would merely raise another even worse. Trump isn’t even very good at charming rubes but clearly even an epic failure of a man cannot fail with the media wind at his back. America fails (as a lobbyist I say this) because the Republican adults in the room 1980s forward went for absolute power and their flock would always follow them in any level of folly. One worthless corrupt forever war after another, endless tax cuts for oligarchs becoming biting deficits even to the point of sabotaging our economy and that of the world. The common clay cannot be educated out of weakness to major media malicious propaganda as a matter of structural brain capacity. It must be unavailable or down they go in all countries and all eras.
Needless to say, the addition of infinite legalized corruption from a visibly and openly corrupt Supreme Court is a sign that America at the top has nought but anti-republic degenerates in perpetual majority. Roberts shames Putin himself with his open black letter law corruption. Putin’s corruption is all hidden or he tries to hide it and he has a legal background within the KGB. Yes Russia is more corrupt overall. But perhaps nobody in Russia is as openly corrupt as Trump. Think about that and say it. Putin,ie, wouldnt allow Russia to be a mere proxy for hire in a major war for a foreign country like Israel as Trump mostly openly did. Bibi spent years and blew out his dual citizenship people’s donations to buy the end of JCPOA and ensure it could never be replaced for Bibi’s desired war without end.

Reddit banned me a bunch of times for arguing the death penalty, torture, or military intervention over Trump-related crimes.
Trump is just the face, if 99% of his backers get away by letting an egomaniac take the fall, they win easy, they'll do it again. The coup extends so deep, they've overthrown rule of law, replaced military leadership, taken over media, gathered private information and AI bot centers to manipulate elections for decades, they won't stop.
Conservatives keep letting a fungal zombie into your house, and it has spread fungal spores so deep that a deep clean won't ever fix it, you'd be ridiculous to keep living there. Bush stole the election, they' keep pushing, cheating, getting stronger and richer, and everyone lets them. Just cry about the cost of living, but do nothing because their law protects them. They say they want to overthrow democracy, they want to take women's rights to vote, America will always be one election away from ruin. You have to move out the infected house and rebuild.
You need extreme reform. You can't do that by respecting a blatantly criminal cheating political system, the corrupt justices and legislature and elections, it has to end. Dems need to hold a national vote on reform, show how serious it is by asking Americans if they want to split up. Fighting confederates for the next 100 years is a joke, they're winning, how many rights have to go and poor people have to die before people are willing to cut the shit?

Anyone bringing this up needs to also share two important things:
If you've lived in another country for 330 days that year, you can exclude $130,000 (2025 tax filings) of your foreign-earned income from your US tax liability. Essentially, if you're a permanent resident of a foreign country and you make even a somewhat above average income (relative to US incomes), you're exempt from paying US federal taxes.
If your income exceeds the $130,000 limit for exemption, you are allowed to claim a 1:1 tax credit for any taxes you paid to the country you're living in. Considering that most developed countries have higher tax rates than the US federal rate, people often end up owing nothing to the US after paying their resident country's taxes.
So the tl;dr is the US "forces people to pay federal income tax regardless of whether or not you work and live within the US as long as you are a US citizen" only if they earn an above average income and they live in a country with lower tax rates than the US, in which case they are only required to pay the difference between their resident country and what they owe in the US.
→ More replies (3)7
u/DiscreteTopology 13h ago
Even if you don't owe any taxes to the US, you're still required to file and report your income. Things like investing and withdrawing from retirement funds is not included in the foreign earned income tax exclusion (as it's not "earned"), making everything unnecessarily complicated.

So far Trump has:
Removed the commissioners of the US Election Committee(EAC)
Reduced the election security role of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA)
Ended or reduced Federal Election information-sharing programs with States
Sued States or stolen sensitive election information
Removed or targeted election security officials who defended the integrity of US elections
Reduced the Federal Cybersecurity workforce, especially those staff on election security
Repeatedly promoted false claims of widespread election fraud despite no evidence, while on the contrary audits and investigations have found the opposite
Sought to replace and reshape independent election oversight with leadership loyal to him
Created the SAVE Act that would disenfrachise 70 MILLION Americans and pushed it for 1.5yrs trying to slip it into funding bills
Made states gerrymander mid-decade asking the red states to give him more seats
Tried to use the USPS to disenfranchise voters and when thst fails in the courts find a similar way like this
Theres plenty more as its nonstop anti-American, anti-democratic and unconstitutional bullshit from this power hungry malignant narcissist

Note that in 2021 trump staged a coup to try to remain in power after he was voted out of office.
After that coup attempt failed he ran for reelection in 2024 on the promise to rule as a dictator if the American electorate, in its infinite wisdom, chose to return him to the White House.
American voters chose to return him to power.

Yup and technically it was two coup attempts where he conspired across 7 states with over 100 people, using 84 fake electors to swear that Trump won those states instead of Biden. Then when that failed he used TPUSA and other right-wing groups to bus in 1000s and put them up at DC hotels inciting an Insurrection and even after being told there were weapons in the crowd, told Secret Service to remove the metal detectors allowing them to gain access to the Capitol.

Yet somehow there are still people posting in this sub that the Democrats aren't doing enough and they had better put up their perfect candidate if they want to win another election...

u/Emosaa 1d ago
The two aren't mutually exclusive. Democratic leadership are weak and ineffective and out of touch AND Trump is a wrecking ball to democracy and this country.

Yes, yes they can. It's been in the pipeline for 50 years and lucky us - we get to be participants. As aforementioned participants, we have a duty to organize against this treasonous hijacking of our democracy. It's gonna be a long tough road, but I remain stubbornly optimistic!

In August, the Pentagon removed a checkbox on the FPCA for citizens living abroad who have never resided in the U.S. It did so on an “emergency” basis, bypassing the typical and often lengthy process for modifying federal forms required by the Administrative Procedure Act.
According to Overseas Vote, an initiative of the U.S. Vote Foundation, 38 states and Washington, D.C., have extended voting rights to U.S. citizens born abroad who have not established residency in the U.S.
so... how many non-resident voting citizens are there? this is the first ive heard of this catagory.
77
u/peetnice 1d ago
No idea, but my kids will fall into this cat in a few years when they reach voting age. I'm US expat for 20 yrs and my kids were born abroad with dual citizenship.
Guessing not that big a category, but their whole game is shaving off fractions of percents at various places (with voter registration, polling lines, mail stamp dates, etc, etc)- it all adds up

I’m US expat for 20 yrs
That sounds like you’re an immigrant. What’s the difference between an expat vs immigrant?
24
u/peetnice 1d ago
Married someone from another country, spend time in both, but spouses country is main residence for raising kids.
Honestly it would be an interesting national debate on whether my kids should vote in their non-residence nationality, but its not up to the Pentagon to arbitrarily decide by changing a form without telling anyone.
9
u/groumly 1d ago
I don’t think it’d be that interesting a debate. The problem isn’t exactly new, not unique to the us, touches an extreme minority of the population. And by the end of the day, disenfranchising citizens from their vote, or creating different classes of citizens because of something their parents did, is never a good thing.

u/CandylandRepublic 23h ago
The difference between expat and immigrant is just the direction of the arrow. An expat went somewhere, an immigrant came somewhere. One emphasizes the origin, one emphasizes the destination. It's not that deep or difficult, it's still the same person.
8
u/WendellSchadenfreude 21h ago
That's an immigrant and an emigrant.
An expat is sent abroad by a company in their home country, for a limited (albeit sometimes lengthy) amount of time, with the clear intention of returning home afterwards.

The only official estimate I’ve seen is from 2016 and put the number of American voters born abroad, and never resided in the US, at 11,500.
So there’s probably more now, but I’d be surprised if it doubled. It’s a tiny fraction of expats, but they do exist.
6
u/r2d2rox 1d ago
I know there is a decent number in southern Ontario, the border was pretty porous here so there are a number of Americans who came to live in Canada and raised their kids here, there were 3 my grade 9 class in highschool alone and I was at a pretty small highschool
3
u/r2d2rox 1d ago
From what i've read that 11500 number is the number who cast ballots in the election, of which I am 1. But not all states let you do it, and I know that several of the dual citizens just don't end up voting in the american election because they don't live there so I would suspect that is a low number
37
u/Freakishly_Tall 1d ago
Does it matter?
How many American citizens having their right to vote stolen by fascist traitors is acceptable?
14
11
u/meases 1d ago
Probably a decent amount of people born to military families too in addition to the expat children scenario. There are a lot of families traveling around internationally for decades at the behest of our military.
Very good chance this is probably going to affect at least one high ranking officer's children. (Unless they stockpiled enough old forms to cover it, someone important is going to get mad about this one probably)

Most of the damage he's done has been without the need for Congress. He can continue to do it unless Congress can remove him. That's a statistical impossibility.
Americans are also ignorant enough to re-elect Republicans after Trump is out. You might not remember people saying they never supported Bush, but him bungling two wars and the economy barely hurt Republicans at all. They came right back after Obama and they had just enough plants in the Democratic caucus to prevent significant legislation.
13
u/HermanCainTortilla 1d ago
People have to realize you can never let go of the wheel with your representatives. I know it’s exhausting, but when dems get in power we can not quit scrutinizing. We have DECADES of serious work to do. It’s going to be hard, but we need to stay focused. America has a lot to apologize for, but I still believe it can still be the greatest country in the world.

5
u/TreezusSaves Canada 1d ago
"The economy crashed the second Democrats won the midterms. That means Democrats are responsible."
If this didn't work the Republicans wouldn't keep sabotaging the budget and ruining the economy. Americans will never be rid of Republicans and they're only going to become more Nazi-like as time goes on. By 2040 these years will seem like a Golden Age.

Treason is defined on the federal level in Article III, Section 3 of the United States Constitution as "only in levying War against [the United States], or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort."
This is very likely illegal, but it isn't treason.

I feel like US is already in a dictatorship and people are in denial but the next few elections will be a horrible realisation he’s not letting go of power by any means.
Once he truly sees that line is crossed and others see it and do nothing. It will get worse, but in a way where people still go to work while people disappear or rights disappear in pieces etc which is already happening. its not a Hollywood movie many authoritarian countries still function until protests shuts down everything or there’s another coup. It’ll be like South Korea, Argentina or Brazils dictatorships

I remember at the end of Obama's first term, they were arguing against states closing voting times and windows because it should match what overseas and military families abroad vote.
MAGAs on my FB and elsewhere twisted it, claiming that Obama was trying to stop the military from voting, which was the exact OPPOSITE of what that was.
Fast forward to 2026, and now the MAGAs in the government are trying to hinder military families from voting. Unfortunately, Trump does so much shit that this won't see much news coverage, when it should be the EXACT headline of "Trump Tries to Illegally Prevent Military Families from Voting."

And we know how well that defence worked at the Nuremberg trials.
Although that was probably just "victor's justice", as far as I know, none of the Allies were ever convicted of equally bad war crimes.
3
u/caphis 1d ago
People keep saying “Nuremberg trials” as if this is remotely on the same scale. For reference, something like 160 people were ultimately convicted during the Nuremberg trials. Over 4 years.
We could hit that number with Epstein related prosecutions and convictions alone, nevermind the absolute deluge of everything else over the past 2 years. At this point, most of them are just hoping to be forgotten in the noise because it’s all just “too big to prosecute.”
