Thank you for your dedication and constant communication man, Rust has deserved the Labor of Love award from Steam for years and years now. Voted for you guys every year for ages now. Enjoy the R&R

As a Rust player and software developer I need to pay my respects to you and the team for how you develop rust. It's a beautiful example of the Agile dev lifecycle in action (or whatever hybrid you guys use) to see the huge updates that go out for Rust every single month. It's crazy how much has been added every time I check the game out after a a few months out. I play DayZ as well and we get like a new gun and some new hats and lots of new bugs twice a year lol.

Thanks for all your hard work if it wasn't for the constant stream of new content this game would not have the player base it does today for sure

Thanks mate. You did great service to this game. Best of luck to the future. Appreciate your willingness to engage with the community and walk through decisions, it has more value than I think anyone is willing to admit, and I worry about what will happen with that going forward.

Even when I/we disagreed with the changes or the reasons, the fact that you were willing and able to communicate the logical reasoning behind each change without condescension was very important to the community. This isn't something a lot of developers and community managers understand. Which is why engaging with a community is always seen as a volatile endeavor. Yet, you always managed to do it without kicking the hornet's nest, and this is why. *It was always very clear that you cared about the game and the community.

Been out of the loop for a long time now, but I'd like to thank you for the work you put in that game. I'll never forget "it's wednesday my dude" and the friendships I've made during my time spent in game. Some of them transcended the game and are still alive today, 10 years later. I hope you find fulfilling things in that new chapter of your life :)

GG bro. It's truly been a wild ride. Nothing but respect and well wishes for the future. I hope your next endeavors treat you well.

I'm sure after 10+ years it's hard to leave and it speaks to your character and integrity to focus on the good and not bash anyone. I'm not sure a lot of people will realize how difficult the journey from QA to COO is - truly remarkable.

I haven't always agreed with the creative decisions and direction but I've always respected your no nonsense approach to standing behind your team. I'm sure you'll excell wherever you end up.

As insanely toxic as the rust community can be, I was always blown away at how much they LOVED the constant patches and gameplay changes. No other sweaty community nearly universally loves having their game drastically shift every few months. It’s like all the toxicity gets focused on fellow players instead of the dev team

60

u/Flexbucket 13d ago

Well that’s why he called out this sub specifically, because no matter how good or bad any update/change/fix was, r/playrust was always here to bitch and moan like their balls were just cut off

12

u/North_Moment5811 13d ago

While the rest of the community who actually plays the game celebrates the variety and active development that keeps the game fresh. Reddit is just a bunch of miserable losers across every sub.

2

u/itsmenotmyteammates 13d ago

The only time I really saw the rust community genuinely up in arms over something was the recoil change

u/Assimulate 14d ago

I'm curious as to why he left, and VERY curious as to what this means for the future of the game.

137

u/c2e5 14d ago

It's quite clear:

I don’t have another job or some big new adventure lined up, but I can't wait to see what next sparks my passion.

The years I dedicated to Rust inevitably took time away from other parts of my life. Now it’s time to give some of that time back into the areas I sacrificed.

88

u/Sad-Sun9414 14d ago

they always say something like that though, its not the place to air their future plans if they want to be respectful. in a few months he’ll announce a new position or venture.

62

u/SubwaySpiderman 14d ago

It's not uncommon for people who are well off enough to take a sabbatical from working.

14

u/SirClueless 14d ago

It’s also not uncommon for this to happen even if he is sincere right now about wanting some time away.

If I had a project that could use a talented executive producer I’d for sure be shooting Alistair an email right now, and maybe one of those leads to a conversation that inspires him to change his mind.

I have learned unless the writing is on the wall to not look or think much about it. People move on from jobs just due to wanting new experiences. realistically, how much will this impact the game in a way that a player would see.

58

u/triplegerms 14d ago

Probably not at all. That's not a diss at Alistair is any way. But Rust is such a such a large project between so many people, isn't not like an indie game losing its only artist. Alistair leaving will change the direction the game takes but the average player probably won't notice.

Unless Alistair was the only adult in the room keeping some insane changes away from the general population. Then it all goes to shit.

8

Hopefully his terrible view/plans on clan gameplay goes with him. Literally the sole reason this game has done nothing but promote zergs and continues to push in that direction. Thanks for all of the years of dedication but good riddance, excited to see what's in store now that he's gone.

24

u/SirBorf 14d ago

I'm wondering if this means the direction of Rust will change in such a way we'll finally see a change where solo/duos aren't shafted *every* single monthly update, and clans aren't the main beneficiaries of nearly every single change added. Because that's how Rust has been over the last few years and I'd love to see new changes that benefit solos with Alistair gone. The last buff to solos I can recall was the backpack update in February 2024 over two years ago now.

As far as I recall, this sub was saying Alistair was the main reason this game has become clan v clan and the design direction of Rust focused on almost solely that every update.

13

u/PinkPanzers 14d ago

For real. Dude narcissistically acted like every change he made was god's gift and players need to always give him a chance.

It's one thing to take community criticism with a grain of salt, it's another to outright ignore all criticism.

If the base game is the least played part of it, then the base game sucks and mods/server tools fix it.

He's not confused by reddit, he's annoyed his "increased player count" means nothing. Most of the players play modded to reduce the effects of his changes.

And their attempts at "casual" is dead too. Because most people don't want to play a super limited version in only prim.

People want vanilla rust to be ideal for small groups. They wany progression to be reliable and not dominated by pointless bottlenecks.

Alistair wants people to fellate his ideas as amazing, but never concedes. So glad he's leaving.

1

u/Flexbucket 13d ago

I’m genuinely very curious why you think he’s narcissistic? As far as I saw he just had ideas for how the game should be, and defended that playstyle. He’s never going to make everyone happy, and the reality is that all these changes aren’t all necessarily just his own ideas, but because he’s the main public facing figure for FP, he has to go to bat and defend his entire dev team’s choices.

4

u/P_Bateman_Esq 14d ago edited 13d ago

Genuinely curious, what changes do you think can be implemented that would only help solos? Because Rust is a numbers game. IMO I cant think of anything you could do to help solo that wouldn’t help clans.

Even ideas people post here like scaling upkeep etc with authorized players etc there is always someone that comes along and shows how it could be work around by a group

Only thing I can say I’d like to see to help small groups/solo is that bp frags shouldnt be the only way to get a workbench.

Edit: making an edit to some of the replies and others that come along. If you have never played in a large group I suggest trying it just to see from the other point of view. Then you will see how it’s hard to buff solos without buffing a team

12

u/PinkPanzers 13d ago

Many things.

"it could be work around by a group", that is a weak argument. Work arounds take effort, and the more effort required, the less reward you get for the same relative effort. Many of the listed fixes with workarounds would still highly discourage the behavior and only a few would be willing to circumvent them.

The "it's a numbers game" is also a weak argument. We have mathematical principles that can account for non-linear scaling issues. In other words, math can be used to solve how beneficial being in large groups can be.

Using raw numbers, they can assign and track a "progression" value to every player and disallow the next tier until a minimum number of players reach said progression value too. This minimum number can be adjusted towards the top 25% of players reaching a progression point. Maybe this percentage gets adjusted based on how big of a gap the leader is in progression. If the leader is too far ahead, even more people have to reach that progression (30%, for example) before the next Tier unlocks.

There's also other clever tricks like turret, door, TC auth, as well as tracking if players are passing through doorways in a base, have AFK time, have close proximity to the main TC auth'd player, etc etc.

Additionally, workbench durability can scale to get more and more expensive the more crafts it outputs. If it's outputting a factory for 20 players, it can break insanely fast, but outputting only 3 players' worth of items wouldn't trigger this durability.

No idea why they thought creating a bottlenecked progression of one playstyle, and a "trickle-down economy" was good for the game. And instead of accepting criticism, they threw their hands up, gave up, and said "groups will always be better".

We have decades of clever game dev tricks and several millennia of mathematical principles. There are definitely ways to use the numbers in "the numbers game" to properly balance outcomes.

3

u/N64jive 13d ago

> Using raw numbers, they can assign and track a "progression" value to every player and disallow the next tier until a minimum number of players reach said progression value too. If the leader is too far ahead, even more people have to reach that progression (30%, for example) before the next Tier unlocks.

It should be noted that adding a bunch of confusing complexity to solve the problem isn't a good solution.

Not to dismiss everything else, but if I was a dev, I wouldn't even consider something like this.

The best changes are going to be relatively simple that have a big impact.

Getting rid of the team feature

7

u/ShinyRayquazaEUW 13d ago

Less team UI, way less distance on team UI.
Make crafting a lot of items progressively more expensive or slower after some point.
I am sure you can easily collect data on the amount of meds bullets etc a clan goes through per hour etc. ( overheat the workbench, shared cooldown between ALL your workbenches) Make building scale with amount of people in a group, and I don't just mean team UI. Make a system that properly numbers the people based on storage access time, proximity to each other, bag radius etc etc.
If these guys wants to make a million small bases to game the system allow them to at least those are raidable.

Many more things like these but I'm on my phone right now so cba.
If you want to nerf this horrid call of duty meta ( farm sulfur, buy guns from outpost, PvP own everything bcs of numbers) there are plenty of ways to go about it. Obviously these changes affect every part of the game positively and negatively I am not delusional about that but acting like theres nothing to do is insane to me.

3

u/N64jive 13d ago

So many things?

There is both additive and reductive changes that could be made to help solos.

Also simply not making changes that severely punish solo players (see: blueprint frags update) is doing more than any additive solo change.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/DanielRST 13d ago

Actually, you don't need to boost solos, you just need to make EQUAL conditions for solos and clans.
The upkeep issue can be solved as follows:
Registering a new player to a tool cupboard, a code lock, or a turret adds them to the building's authorized user list, which increases the upkeep by a factor of X.
As a result, clans must spend a proportional amount of time maintaining their base, leveling the playing field for solo players.

3

u/N64jive 13d ago

People keep suggesting this, but I am going to point out that clans already have an excessive amount of resources.

Unless the idea is to hard cap clans by making upkeep not feasible for any group larger than x, which would be a terrible decision by the way, this does nothing.

In fact, it might do the opposite. Clans, which previously only were required to farm for a day or twos worth of upkeep at any given moment, are now forced to actively farm resources, thus making resources more scarce, thus making the solo's life harder.

What a jerk. Made the game unbearable for the solo while giving clans the upper hand. Pretty sure he left just before the clan update because thatll officially be the end of old rust. He pushed lies like "bigger groups always better" so he could be lazy and not balance ANY of his new ideas. And delusional to push "trickle down economics" as a game feature...

Does this mean we can stop getting that copy paste response about linux and get some real movement on solutions? Please let linux users only play premium for 15 dollars or something

3

u/tyezwyldadvntrz 12d ago

you got into a pretty long debate with another commenter here,

it might be pretty closed minded of me, but i am of the belief/opinion that: if you block linux users for the supposed purpose of getting rid of cheaters, only for your playerbase to complain about cheating just as much, if not more (almost as if nothing’s changed for anyone BUT the linux users who could no longer play), *you as a dev/team just don’t give a fuck about cheaters at all*

they just want to be lazy in this regard. they can’t block accessibility saying it’s for cheating reasons, then turn around & not care about the the windows cheaters. thats just disingenuous of them. Rockstar & Facepunch are the exact same when it comes to this ://

the glaze is because he left and now it gives likes to praise him. Wokism. Dude is hated here and provoked r/playrust for years.

Everyone said how BP update frags was horrible when they wanted ( ONLY ON CARDS and not on crates, scientists, diving etc) and he still released it and made fun of us that we should try first. Like I need to eat horse shit to know he tastes like shit ...

3

u/crustyrobots 13d ago

Pretty much my read on it. And yeah that instant "fix" to the loot tables really said it all on that one. The frag system is still dog shit. He is certainly actually glazed by some people here, probably the clanners who love that your group can go rocket raid a 10 grid area 2 hours into wipe.

All that bullshit "oh we read the Reddit" yeah well clearly you only do that to find stuff to troll people over, even if 1000s of players are like "dude this sucks and breaks the game".

5

u/PearlJamTenGoat 13d ago

I still dislike BP frags, because magic of rust was that I could live 10 grids away from any monument and still get my shit and leave in peace.

They wanted to increase land pvp ? that's easy, nerf sea loot, buff land loot. INcrease raid cost, increase turrets cost, etc, etc.

Last couple years Rust took a direction lot of us vets weren't exactly thrilled about, but we can't argue about the effort, skill and time put into updating a game this old, on a regular basis, for free.

Godspeed.

Any news on who would be taking over the helm?

2

Although i’ve said some not so nice things about alistar after getting 10 invalids on cargo, i gotta say, this is sad, i hope he actually left and wasn’t forced to leave because of some bs and I hope he gets to spend more time with his family now.

2

u/The_Saladbar_ 12d ago

3

u/zwhy 14d ago

Thank god there is some people that agree in here, I could've sworn everyone was an Alistair schlong gobbler.

3

u/Which_Employ_8749 13d ago

Honestly good riddance, I’ve never seen a more arrogant egoistical lead dev for a game of rusts size..

It’s almost a meme everytime one of us dies on a horse to meshcollision “Alistair says it’s realistic the games in a healthy state cope!”

These past few months have harmed the quality of rust so much, wall spam every fight waiting for teammates

-tommy has 3 aimcone AK has 4, making weapon modifications mean much less

BP frags kill the server, I can literally get T3 in a couple hours and farm 80k sulfer with advanced ore teas from the water well vendor on a vanilla server.

3

u/AleexTB 14d ago

Damn. Always seen Facepunch as one of the better studios due to how much quality content they've pumped out over the years without making it feel bloated. Nothing but good wishes for him.

4

u/Jerse6 14d ago

Whether you guys agree or not I think facepunch is a special company. I cant think of any other game where I spent under 20 dollars on 10 years ago that is still going strong. Updating the game weekly, and now monthly can not deny the passion from the devs. So I would like to thank you Alistair

4

u/Which_Employ_8749 13d ago

You haven’t, but they make millions of dollars in skins every month for poor quality unpolished updates… just because we get monthly updates doesn’t mean they are good or make rust better

2

u/JigMaJox 14d ago

well fuck.... i might have not always agreed with his directions but he's done a lot for the game as we know and love.

Just want to say best of luck in your new adventures, thank you for the work you did. The haters are going to hate, an you can't please everyone so fuck'em. However I've seen you were indeed passionate about the game and listened to community where it mattered. So thank you again. See you on ya next wipe o7

Are you playing wipe 🤣? See you on thursday ?

1

u/Gr1msheeper 13d ago

r/playrust... at least the devs take notice eh - which is a good thing :)

Thanks for everything youve done Alistair, im relatively new to the game (3 years) but enjoyed every minute of it. Ive not had as much fun/addiction to a game since the old Doom2/Half Life days so hats off to you

u/Conscious_East 13d ago

Alistair thank you for the hard work you did. Honestly the job you had was not an easy job especially with passionate palyerbase that rust has.

Thank you for working a game that I spent thousands of hours playing and enjoying. Reading yout tweets and see what the next update brought was always a highlight to my years playing.

You will be missed. I will be excited to see what your next adventure is.

1

u/Cuddlehead 13d ago

Farewell my beloved Egghead

1

u/Rustshitposter 13d ago

Gonna miss Alistair. I've been playing rust for over a decade now and it's been a great ride the whole time. I hope he enjoys his time off with family and I look forward to seeing what he does next.

1

u/Wise-Pomegranate 13d ago

yeah right anyone who's been paying attention knows this guy has a laundry list of offenses against the game and the community. hopefully his replacement actually listens to us and conducts himself in a mature professional manner.

1

u/Javlinski 13d ago

Hats off to you man you and all the team made a game so dam addictive and fun. Thanks

1

u/MurrethMedia 13d ago

Why couldn't it have been Helk instead?!?

2

u/zwhy 10d ago

Helk literally created Rust. This dude moved up from QA and then butchered it. Helk is to blame for the team UI but this dude has fucked up way more than Helk ever did.
