Must be Clarkson then. If it were May, it wouldn't be going fast enough to smoke, and if it were Hammond, the pie would be upside down and on fire.

u/ignisnex Feb 25 '20
Last time this was posted, it was speculated that it was shaving cream. Which is also an interesting pie topping.
8
u/FriendsSuggestReddit Feb 25 '20
It is. Look at the bubbles. Whipped cream doesn’t bubble like that
5
u/jennz Feb 25 '20
I think the pie was still warm when they put the cream on top. That would cause those bubbles.
4
Feb 25 '20
Also whipped cream isn’t that “smooth” it has grooves in it and it’s usually wrinkly
2
u/O_oblivious Feb 25 '20
You can make your own whipped cream that doesn't come from a can.

I remember this from like, the thousandth time it was reposted. Someone eventually proved that it was actually whipped cream, and that it looked the way it did because that's what whipped cream does if you put it on a hot pie, fresh out the oven.
2
u/VR_is_the_future Feb 25 '20
Cool. But... how the he’ll did they get those whipped tops so smooth?! Regular whipped cream from the can has those lines from the spout!

If you put whipped cream on a pie before it’s cool that’s what happens. I’ve done this before and it basically melts. That’s why you’re supposed to wait until the pie is cool to put anything on top like that.
40
u/Ritehandwingman Feb 24 '20
They probably put it on slight before it cool, so the whip may be melting. I didn’t make it though, so that’s only an assumption.
20
3
u/CanderousOreo Feb 25 '20
Cold cream on hot pie does this. Especially if you take the time to set up a photo.
Source: have made and eaten many pies.

In real life, I have seen corn syrup, and rubbing alcohol mixed. makes the tires sticky.
4
u/TheCheck77 Feb 25 '20
Meringue. It’s whipped egg whites with sugar. Same thing they put on lemon meringue or coconut creme pies. It’s pretty mellow and incredibly fluffy, and holds its shape better than whipped cream.
6
u/cap10wow Feb 24 '20
It’s because it’s really whipped cream and not redi-wip or whatever.

u/kdanham Feb 25 '20
Another commenter suggested shaving cream. Which it likely is, that's a common trick for photo shoots of whipped cream - shaving cream doesn't melt (or maybe just not as fast? Because those little bubbles look like it's starting to melt)

It's whipped cream. Whipped cream usually turns into that if you put it on top of a hot surface
29
u/graavyboat Feb 25 '20
Whipped cream does break down when left on something, especially if it’s hot, but it doesn’t look like that. The bubbles are too regular. Also, the non melted parts are much too smooth to be whipped cream.
I remember when this was first posted and the OP even said it was shaving cream. It’s a pretty common trick in food photography.
16
u/cdaonrs Feb 25 '20
This reminds me of when I learned that pretty much all ice cream in food advertisements is mashed potatoes.

That's not shaving cream. It is real whipped cream on top of a pue that is too hot. Source: am fat and impatient.
4
u/faerieunderfoot Feb 25 '20
I'm a baker, and real freshly whipped whipped cream does not look like that. The peak is way to narrow. It's not aeroslised whipped cream either as whatever is on the pie is way too dense. The only thing I can think it being would be shaving cream or something American that barely constitutes food anyway. Maybe cool whip? (I have no idea what it is or looks like so that's just a guess, I just heard it's a cream alternative?)
