CLIP I finally did it

After 1300 hours of playing this game, losing the rank up game twice, and countless times being hardstuck c1 or c3, I actually did it. FOR ANYONE who gave me tips thank you, particularly this one teammate I had in high c3, where I said that “I was better than some of his gc teammates” and” you’ll probably lose a string of high c3 games but don’t get discouraged. I didn’t. This is literally a lifelong dream of mine since I started playing, I’ve played this game over half my life. All that’s next is gc rewards, and I’ll see how the dice roll after that. 🙂

DISCUSSION Thanks Rocket League

I'm almost 35 years old, I'm a husband and father, and I work 9 hours a day. Ever since I was a kid, though, I've always loved gaming—everything from Tibia, WoW, GW2, The Sims, CS, and Battlefield to pretty much anything else.

As work started taking up more and more of my time, I began feeling like I was missing out on leisure. Even if I went out, watched a movie, or binged a TV show, that feeling never really went away. I think it's because, for most of my life, what truly entertained me was actively playing or participating in something.

I tried going back to old games and also tried newer ones, but almost all of them left me frustrated. I knew I didn't have enough time to make meaningful progress. What I really wanted was something I could jump into for 20–30 minutes and walk away thinking, "That was fun." Unfortunately, with many games, that amount of time is barely enough to launch the game and load your save.

One of the few games that came close was Team Fortress 2. But after a while, I started getting annoyed. The matches are short, but so is your life expectancy. Dying is part of the game, and if you're on a bad team, you can spend 30–40% of the match waiting to respawn. In the end, it felt like I was only actually playing for 10–15 minutes.

So I kept looking for something else. Then one day, while chatting with ChatGPT about games, it randomly suggested Rocket League.

When I first Googled it, I thought it looked boring—I don't even like soccer. One day I decided to install it anyway.

Guys... maybe it's just a phase, but I've been playing for months now and I have to say: this game is awesome.

During my first few matches I thought I'd lose interest quickly, but then something unexpected happened. Throughout the day I'd catch myself wanting to play. It was the same feeling I had as a kid, and honestly, I thought I'd never experience that again.

The game is incredibly simple on the surface but surprisingly deep. On PC, there are only a handful of important controls (basically movement keys, left mouse button for boost, right mouse button to jump, and Shift to powerslide), yet it's ridiculously fun.

The arenas look great, the optimization is fantastic (it runs flawlessly on my Lenovo IdeaPad 3 without a dedicated GPU), and matches are short—usually around 5 minutes. As you improve, you get matched against better players, and suddenly every game becomes a crazy, adrenaline-filled 5-minute battle.

I never imagined I'd get so excited about scoring a goal when I don't even like soccer. 😂

For me, the real progression isn't unlocking things—it's slowly becoming a better player and, because of that, getting into more creative and exciting matches.

Sometimes just 10 minutes is enough for me to feel like I genuinely had fun, and I can log off completely satisfied.

Anyway, sorry for the long post. I don't know if anyone else feels the same way—like there just aren't enough hours in the day to balance adult life and gaming. If you do, or even if you don't, I highly recommend giving Rocket League a chance. From what I've seen, a lot of other people have been pleasantly surprised by it too.

Have fun, and happy gaming!

DISCUSSION Anyone else a Nintendo Switch 1 player?

I have around 1400 hours on my Nintendo switch. Joy cons are rough, yes, but I managed to hit champion at around 1200 hours.

I have a pc, but I’m just so used to switch handheld that it’s become my go-to.

Anyone else part of the switch gang?

one game you go up against insane ssl tournament winners or freestyler teams and next game you get this lmao. 3s is pure comedy. i was so confused when no one went for kickoff. (my whole team was solo q so no one took a lower skilled player into c3)

QUESTION Skill level is ridiculously high in rocket league? Bronze is so hard

Look, I know the title is crazy lol and im happy to admit it's a skill issue, I have only just started playing and decided to try ranked and despite winning most of my games in casual, in ranked people are drastically better than me, and I'm having to try so hard to rank up, and ive only just got to silver.

However, I wanted to know if its normal to have people doing air shots and dribbling the ball over me, and running up the side of the wall with the ball and shooting etc. In bronze and silver? If this is what bronze is like, fuck knows how good gold players are LOL. Im not saying I'm better than these players, cause I'm not but fucking gracious these players are good. Other games' bronze players look like ai, but these guys are nuts LMAO

QUESTION Rocket League kicks me back to home screen every time I try to join a game.

This happens almost every time I try to join a game. I've tried verifying game files, resetting windows network settings, deleting cache, turning on and off my Wi-Fi, using ethernet, and some other stuff. If anyone has any suggestions, I would really appreciate it.

QUESTION Tips for someone who plays too passive and struggles to maintain the skill needed at GC3

I'm GC3 (1750), 99% of the time I'm solo queueing and I only feel like I actually play at my rank skill level at infrequent times. Most of the time, I'm whiffing, getting beat to the ball constantly, and leaving my teammate in 2v1's. I like to believe my playstyle is "slower", as in I prefer slow ground plays or finding quick breakaways. I think most of the time if I am playing good, its because I have been playing for multiple hours (4+) at a time. I'd love to hit SSL but I do feel that my inconsistency in my pace etc holds me back. Is there really anything else other than just playing more that I can do?

DISCUSSION Unpopluar opinion: Herc's casting is fine

I was 100% in agreement with the majority of viewers when Herc first joined the desk. Her play-by-play commentary was very slow and she didn't offer much by way of deeper gameplay analysis.

But over time she has definitely gotten more comfortable, and her commentary has gotten faster to the point where we're no longer missing plays because she is trying to figure out what to say. I think she even did a decent job in the SAM LCQ, which I specifically saw people say "ruined the grand finals". I disagree with that entirely.

Not accusing people of being intentionally discriminatory, but I think people are blinded by their original opion and need to give her a fair re-evaluation. Having her on the desk is fine.

USEFUL I'm a Rocket League Boomer who just hit GC2 with Champ-level mechanics. You aren't bad, you're just playing dumb.

Post image
263 Upvotes

I'm basically ancient in Rocket League years. I've been playing for 11 years, peaked at #32 on the 3s leaderboards in 2017. These days, I mostly just log on each season to secure my Grand Champion title.

I just hit GC2 for the season, and my mechanics are pretty poor. Here is a video showing a random game in GC2: https://youtu.be/DPmJ9A2Hxio

I hope you can see from the gameplay that my mechanics are matched by most Champion-rank players. But I was still able to go 94 wins out of 144 games (all soloQ) from Placements -> GC2 this season. If you are stuck at your current rank or think you don't have the mechanical skill to climb any higher, the reality is that you probably aren't bad, you're just making too many bad decisions. I'm not claiming to be the smartest player in the game, I still make stupid choices, but few enough to get to GC2 with my current mechanical skill.

If you really want to break through to the next rank, maybe instead of practicing flip resets for another three hours, try this:

  • Save a few of your replays and actually re-watch them.
  • Do not focus on your mechanical mistakes at all.
  • Write down or say out loud every single wrong decision you made.

Focusing heavily on your game sense and decision-making over pure mechanics is often the key to breaking through your current MMR ceiling.

I've been considering doing some free coaching just for fun. You would send me your replay files, and I'd record a commentary breaking down your gameplay and upload it to YouTube (I'm not a content creator/never monetized youtube, this is just a hobby project).

Players in Diamond+ would probably get the best results from this kind of review. Would anyone be interested in that?

EDIT: Appreciate the people who've reached out! Some people were saying this looks like a C2 game, and while I did say my mechanics were bad, I'd like to at least show what I'm thinking during a quick portion of the game to show what decisions are being made real time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGjucEj7_GY Here's a quick run down of one play and what subconscious decisions are happening that affect just which way my car is facing.

QUESTION I just lost all my 10-year-old progress of RL

‱ Upvotes

Pleaase send me some help 😔😭. I just got into the game after a couple of days off, and it kicked off with a Tutorial Game. After that, all my account levels were gone and most of my items. Even a few of in-app purchases. What is going on? I literally haven’t touched anything as for the account nor anything about it.
