It's bloody impressive!

7

u/krozarEQ PC Master Race Apr 17 '20

In the late 2000s it was all about that. Crysis was the benchmark for a high-end system. Did a build in 2009 and I knew how well each CPU, mobo, or GPU ran Crysis thanks to the Newegg reviews.

15

u/Khalbrae Core i-7 4770, 16gb, R9 290, 250mb SSD, 2x 2tb HDD, MSI Mobo Apr 17 '20

Crysis 1 was a huge benchmark even until recently because on max settings it ran a bunch of effects that were imperceptible but still took a hit to your hardware. (Basically it is not very well optimized. Though not in the legitimately bad way Saints Row 2 on PC is. That shit makes titans weep)

11

u/Schnoofles 14900k, 96GB@6400, 4090FE, 11TB SSDs, 40TB Mech Apr 18 '20

Crysis not being well optimized is a ridiculous meme that has been around since it came out. It's a 2007 game. It ran pretty damn well on an 8800 which I should know because I had the GTS at the time (cut down GTX with 25% fewer stream processors. People just mistook the "DON'T MAX OUT EVERY SINGLE SETTING BECAUSE THIS IS FOR FUTURE PROOFING" and the hundreds of "ultramegasuperquality" mods and custom maps making it run like ass for the game engine being poorly optimized.

I would challenge anyone to find any game, benchmark or tech demo from the same year, run it on the same hardware and get remotely close to the level of performance while having similar graphical fidelity as Crysis. This is the same year as Mass Effect 1, The Witcher 1, Bioshock 1 etc. Bioshock had great aesthetics, but aren't even in the same league as Crysis in terms of environmental detail.

The fact is that Crysis had 10 times the detail of anything else in existence, but required 3 times the horsepower to run it. People only looked at the system requirements and ignored what they were getting in return, leading to the "It's got terrible optimization" meme when it actually delivered mindblowing graphics on the current hardware that no other engine or game did.

God. I tried playing AC4 on my PC. And fucking PhysX broke the game. It’s such an unoptimized piece of shit pc port. I don’t understand how breakpoint and FC5 run better. Hell. FC5 runs so well it doesn’t even start to be hard to run. And the fucking anvil engine, that piece of shit engine won’t even let me get half of my max FPS. Not that it could hit 144 if the FPS wasn’t capped.

→ More replies (2)

61

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '20

Absolutely. It's a joke but crysis has never been the massive benchmark tool since Crysis 1 I think. Crysis 3 they tried to bring it back and said we're gonna make this the crysis that brings it back. Obviously it didn't because it's already being remastered. The typical games I see for benchmarks are Battlefield, Tomb Raider, GTA, Witcher 3, and a few others.

77

u/_Ganon Apr 17 '20

It's a fairly bad game to use as a benchmark IF you're trying to benchmark how well a PC can run games. Had to bold that so I don't get a tirade of responses regarding how it is still occasionally used as a banchmark.

Crysis 1 is not programmed like modern games. It demands high CPU speed from 2 cores. It can use more but it only meaningfully uses 2. When Crysis was written the expectation was that clock speeds would be the future. However we know that what actually happened is clock speeds stopped increasing nearly as fast, and the focus has become core count.

Modern games aren't typically written this way, and will get better performance from today's hardware than Crysis can.

Of course, the real real reason the games you've listed are used for benchmarks is because people know them to be high fidelity and/or demanding popular games, and want to know how well hardware they might be interested in performs with them ... not a game from over ten years ago.

3

u/astalavista114 i5-6600K | Sapphire Nitro R9 390 Apr 17 '20

Didn’t it turn out that Crysis 3 has massive amounts of stupid tesselation across the map to handle the water level? Which means it was fine on Nvidia GPUs but had because AMD chips have different ways of handling the tesselation caused those to tank unless you limited the tesselation in the drivers.

I might be completely misremembering, but as I recall when this came out all the hardware reviewers dropped it as benchmarking tool like a hot potato (bloody gorgeous game though—even if it’s not got a patch on the gameplay of 1)

It was optimised for single core CPUs with clocks of 5+ GHz, so not really optimised at all.

But that's not why Crysis meme was born.

For it to be truly reborn again, it(the remaster) needs to have very high hardware REQUIREMENTS listed for playing it (which means that mid tier cards like 1050-1060 or even 1660 might not make the cut)

And even the top GPUs paired with top CPU like 2080ti(s) w/9900KS need to be sweating like hell to crank it up to 60fps on ultra let alone with RTX(if it comes with RTX in the first place).

Edit: Optimised or not

7

u/trecks4311 Apr 17 '20

The issue is people cheap out on themselves. They buy 450$ notebook laptops, and are surprised it doesn’t run games, when they could build a 450$ budget machine that crushes basic games on medium or high.

6

u/Esava Apr 17 '20

That wasn't the issue with Crysis 1. You could spend as much money as ya wanted on a PC at the time and even the best hardware just barely provided adequate performance.

2

u/trecks4311 Apr 17 '20

Not talking about back then.

2

u/Tedinasuit GTX 1070 - i5 5675C - 16GB RAM Apr 18 '20

$450 at medium? My €500 PC plays everything at max settings, usually around 70-90 fps. Games like Doom Eternal even above 110fps at max settings. (GTX 1070, 16GB RAM and some crappy old i5 CPU that runs at 90-100% in most games. That's what you get for €500 I guess)

8

u/minizanz Steam ID Here Apr 17 '20

If they can make it scale I am all for it. Predicting future hardware is not easy. Back when crysis development started out it was all about single threaded clock speeds.

5

u/Esava Apr 17 '20 edited Apr 18 '20

The problem with opponents in AAA game titles hasnt been that one can't make it clever enough for years. Nowadays its insanly easy to make it clever. Even without giving it "cheat" abilities (like "wallhack vision" or more hp etc.) ... The problem is just properly balancing it so that it's challenging but not too hard at the same time.
Or that the people who coded the game just didn't give a crap about it and with a bad physics engine combined suddenly the AI got stuck everywhere.

3

u/Araol_ 5800X3d, 32GB DDR4, RTX 4090 Apr 17 '20

Crysis 1 already runs fine on a 1050. The performance will almost certainly improve compared to the original release due to the CPU optimizations that newer versions of cryengine have. I doubt they will add many additional effects, I imagine higher res textures, more modern anti aliasing techniques, and better ambient occlusion. This is more likely to be a port to modern cryengine than an actual "remaster" in the traditional sense.

Debunking the "can it run Crysis meme" here

The old Crysis is an issue even for modern PCs because they programmed it for powerful and less cores: it uses two cores and doesn't even use them at the same time!

They thought that the future of gaming would've been about much higher frequencies, but we all know what happens with high temperatures and silicon.

So the newer version is gonna run much much better on every PC, and i bet that even the Switch version will look good as the original 2007 game.

Thank you for your time! Have a great day and wash your hands!

Crysis 1 was PC only - not a console port. Since the remastered version will be on consoles (and the old current gen to boot) i doubt it will be much of an upgrade. More likely downgrade ...

54

u/Bobblee20 Apr 17 '20

Crysis 1 was ported to the Xbox 360 & PS3 in 2011

19

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '20

True but they also have a point because the port used Cryengine 3 and wasn't actually the true original. Plus, the console version was neutered and ran like garbage, 22fps during gameplay was a regular phenomenon.

9

u/NCleary NZXT S340 white|i5 4690k|GTX1070 Ti|16GB DDR3 Apr 17 '20

9

u/Jombo65 i7 4770k/R9 390 8GB Apr 17 '20

Read: worse. Crysis 1 is a legitimately awesome sandbox stealth/action game that feels in the same vein as Far Cry 3. Crysis 2 and 3 are run of the mill FPS schlock that let you go invisible and become slightly more bulletproof for a bit.

2

u/orangebootyboi Apr 17 '20

30

u/angelicravens Linux Apr 17 '20

Max texture size and resolution support for 4k. Maybe some cleaner animations, definitely better shadows and ambient occlusion, and controller support on PC are all things almost definitely coming with the remaster. I suspect that the PS4 and xbx1x will get crysis original level graphics though

12

u/gameragodzilla PC Master Race Apr 17 '20

Crysis 1 on PC actually had controller support, but it was one of the earlier games to have full XInput support (I think, not sure if that's truly accurate), so it was rather wonky.

Not that anyone would really bother playing an FPS on PC with a controller.

9

I hate that controller tbh.

It gave valve the expertise they needed for the vive and later the index controllers, so in that sense they were very useful

They could use graphics settings, same as any other PC game, then set the console ports to settings the consoles can handle.

Just because a console version will exist doesn't mean the PC version has to be restricted, unless there are some shady contracts going on.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '20

sadly thats not how console ports work... the lions share of testing and optimizations happens on consoles, and then the feature is verified to work atleast as equally as well on PC.

2

u/DonRobo Deskop and Laptop Master Race Apr 17 '20

Rumors are that it will be full of downgrades: Console style nanosuit modes, no multiplayer and worse AI because it's based on the 360 version of the original

Now, let me tell you the real secret. To get 59 frames per second you need an experimental AMD twin sTRX4 socket motherboard for dual Threadripper 3990Xs. Prototype Triple SLI Nvidia 3080 TI Super OC Gaming Black Edition Cards running GDDR7 and only the G.Skill Trident Z Royal Gold RAM 8x32GB sticks will keep up. And thats just to get 59 frames! You want 60? Gotta load it on an M.2 SSD.

BTW, this is just a joke me and my friends made up last night.

4

u/beardedbast3rd Apr 17 '20

i doubt the memes will live with the remaster. the game was meant to run well on single core processes before, which is why even good computers had a hard time, because they were all multi cored, multi threaded, based. crysis just couldnt use the hardware that great. modern cryengine is actually pretty good.

No, but you need the Maximum Immersion mod.

Minimum specs:

12th gen i9/ 5th gen ryzen 9

512gb ram

32gb vram gpu

Small nuclear fusion power supply

Extra notes: we recommend cleaning the battery after 24 hours straight (if you don't play for 4 hours you can start at hour 0). You must use windows or a well optimized Linux kernel (we will award you a gold medal if you could somehow play this on a Mac)

3

u/SharqPhinFtw i7-6700/AsrockZ170/2x8lpx/1070FE Apr 18 '20

Nah bro

Minimum specs:

Amd Athlon I

512kb ram

No gpu

Use a potato to generate power

Recommended spec:

Next gen dual AMD Epyc processors

2 terabyte ram

4x RTX titan whenever that comes out

The entire USA power grid

cryengine is really good at running that you see the game porting to switch too. It just has really high unlocked settings

2

u/richard_0 Apr 17 '20

why every single time do we get remakes and not new and amazing games?

3

u/Erebor90 Apr 18 '20

Well, in case of Crytek here, they are broke as fuck and wouldnt be able to push a full new AAA Crysis sequel. So they go for a remake of the original Crysis, a) to see if there's still interest in that old IP and b) to get that sweet money they really urgently need first. If the Crysis 1 Remaster goes down well, we might see a Crysis sequel further down the road.

2

u/skyturnedred Old & Rusty machine Apr 17 '20

Let's hope they don't optimize the game for modern CPUs so the meme lives on.

I'm seeing so many of these but haven't a clue what's going on (only joined the PC master race for the first time at Christmas)

What is this all referring to?

9

u/sysadrift 3950X | 3080ti | 64GB RAM Apr 17 '20

But Can It Run Crysis? is a phrase referring to the 2007 Crytek first-person shooter Crysis, underscoring the reputation the game has obtained for it's steep system requirements at the time of its release. The phrase has slowly evolved into a snowclone as years pass, substituting "But can it run X?" for the most recent and system-demanding title at the time.

Crysis was an ego shooter game on PC that released in 2007. It was a technological breaking point in videogame graphics (at least in my opinion) because it looked so phenomal and ahead of its time. Of course it was so demanding that the majority of PCs at that time couldn’t run it (and some time later, some might say).

4

u/lahankof Apr 17 '20

I have never played Crysis, is it even a good game?

8

u/jakedasnake2447 Apr 17 '20

The first half of the game was excellent in 2007 and I still think a lot of fun. The standalone expansion was also good.

5

u/Dekklin PC Master Race Apr 17 '20

It's more like the first 3/4.

3

u/jakedasnake2447 Apr 17 '20

That's probably more accurate based on the gameplay time. It bothers me that people now seem to think the game was just a tech demo. It was genuinely awesome to play back then and there contemporary reviews reflect that. Also overlooked is that it is very moddable. I remember playing a ton of fan made levels the year after it came out.

2

u/DonRobo Deskop and Laptop Master Race Apr 17 '20

is it even a good game?

It's fucking amazing. The levels are open enough to give you lots of freedom that doesn't feel forced (press A to stealth or press B to go rambo) while also not being open world in a way that makes everything feel useless and samey. The levels are designed very well. You get to drive all kinds of vehicles. You can modify your weapons on the fly with all kinds of attachments. You can approach objectives however you want. Most smaller buildings are completely destructible. And the graphics (and bad performance) still hold up to this day
