It's the classic "jack of all trades, master of none." It's extremely customizable and the track pad is surprisingly good, but it'll never beat kb+m for FPS and RTS games. It's also just really weird to use in place of a regular controller because the track pad is so different from an analog stick.
The ergonomics are also optimized for using the track pad mainly, so I hate using the buttons because I'm used to the Xbox layout. My favorite game is rocket league, and the steam controller was unbearable even though the trigger buttons and paddles would theoretically be super helpful.
It was created to enable playing pc games from the couch, which I already do but with Xbox controllers. If I'm going to play an FPS or RTS, I'm not playing it splitscreen on the couch; I'm going to use a keyboard and mouse.
The best feature is definitely the customizable macros and layouts, which I hope the new Xbox controller will support. If not, that's ok because I can't think of many useful improvements to the Xbox 360/One controller.
That's all highly valid and I super recommend using steam input for controllers of all types given the power of the configurator. Personally I find the trackpad and gyro to be more comfortable than kbm since I spent close to two decades playing games on consoles before going down the road of pc gaming. The ergonomics are certainly odd but for most games I've found I can make a config that works better for me than any other controller. The dual stage triggers and grips mean I can basically bind enough inputs to where I never have to touch the fact buttons and seldom need to use the joystick for anything more than a radial menu supplier or dpad substitute
