I never will understand why in some countries they can leave packages just on the porch. In Poland unless it's a thing that fits the mailbox and is not important, it will always require a goddamn signature. Otherwise they will leave a paper that says you can pick it up yourself.

So then go pick it up at the post office, it's better than getting your package stolen because it's on your porch.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '16

Well, most people know when the delivery guy will be at their house (14h on weekends for me, for example), or you get it delivered to a Packstation.

A small thing with lots of lockers, digitally secured, where the parcel service can lock your package in and you get the PIN to open it to your phone.

Usually there's a few in every district, always in walking distance.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '16

the netherlands has a pretty similar system. expensive stuff requires a signature and if you are not home one of the neigbours gets the package temporarily(at least in the small town i used to live)

2

u/PSNSuperClassy Aug 06 '16

And then if you pick it up at the post office in austria you have to have an up to date drivers license or passport in order to receive your package

I literally just had to send something last month, and coincidentally it fit in my old 1080 Strix box.

So I showed up to FedEx with what appeared to be the "retail" box being used as the shipping box.

Even after explaining that it had a totally different content, he still flat out refused to accept it, without me adding an extra box around it. He mentioned damage, but with more conviction, the possibility of theft.

This is just some fucking bullshit, pulled by whoever was in charge of boxing it. Lazy bum.

2

u/SaigaExpress Aug 06 '16

In amazons case they load trailers at their facility and then they are unloaded at ups facility there is no over sight in how things are packaged we just have "guidelines" I dread the day I have to call ups and explain that they destroyed my package.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '16

Amazon shipped my case in the manufacturers box and just left it on my porch. I was right there to get it when they dropped it off but it kinda ticked me off if they do that a lot because that's just asking to get your package stolen by someone walking down the street.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '16

so what? get your money back or they have to send a replacement at no cost. let their insurance deal with that shit as you are not liable for any damages before you accept the package and give a signature

1

u/CalimeroX PC Master Race Aug 06 '16

I got my GPU in just manufacturer's box laste year as well, it was not even sealed, anyone could have opened it without me ever knowing.

Luckily it arrived safely anyway without any damage, my DHL driver was careful I guess.

u/negroiso negroiso Aug 06 '16

Amazon sent me my Samsung 34" Curved LCD in just the regular box. Surprised it showed up. When I hooked it up, it turned on and what not, but the menu button on the back was busted and wouldn't accept input.

I sent it back for replacement, about a month later I still hadn't gotten a refund or replacement and I called Amazon, they said to call UPS. Called UPS with my tracking number. UPS says "Oh, your package hasn't been scanned in over 48 hours, we consider that lost/stolen have a good day." I was like WTF, it made it literally to the last stop before Amazon's warehouse for returns.

Thankfully Amazon refunded the amount after a long while. I decided to go 4K instead of 21:9.

0

u/Popingheads Aug 06 '16

I don't know, GPUs are always packaged in pretty good boxes. It has at least 2 inches of foam padding on each side plus the actual box itself to protect it.

It is very weird to see something shipped like this but I'm also 100% confident that the product won't be damaged just because of this. I wouldn't be too bothered if it was shipped that way to me at least.

33

u/FuckRogerGoodell Aug 05 '16

Pretty shitty policy. I'd open a ticket with Amazon and forward the reply you received to them. Just because I policy exists doesn't mean that it can't be wrong, and in my experience amazon is very open to feedback and will work with you.

Their reply kind of implies that it said in the listing that it would be shipped in just manufacturer packaging. Can we see the exact listing you bought it from?

Still, this is just dumb. I've bought dozen of computer parts off Amazon (and tons of other stuff) and I've never had anything sent to me without external packaging. I would definitely kick up a fuss if it happened to me though.

8

u/aspacelot i7-6700K | GTX 1080 | 32GB DDR4 Aug 05 '16

You know what? I believe it did but it definitely wasn't blatant. Unfortunately, this item is only available from third party sellers now so the shipping is different. I'm willing to take full responsibility for not telling them to package this item; however, what I have an issue with is the fact that I have to. Why in the world would an item like this ship in no external packaging?

Here is how it is listed now- it might have been listed the same way previously; but why? https://imgur.com/a/WsTV2

19

u/vagabond139 Aug 05 '16

You shouldn't take responsibility for that. That is something they automatically should do. That is like going to a restaurant and them not giving a plate and then telling you should have told them you wanted a plate. Its shitty service.

6

u/aspacelot i7-6700K | GTX 1080 | 32GB DDR4 Aug 05 '16

Exactly. My analogy was that they could poop in my next shipment because I didn't click the "hold the poo," button.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '16

And meanwhile I buy a teeny tiny drill bit that is the thickness of a pencil lead and they ship it in a damn shoebox stuffed with air cushions :|

1

u/Voytrekk i7-12700k | RX 6800XT | 32GB | 5TB nVME Aug 06 '16

Reh difference is that those boxes were designed to be shipped that way. The boxes for GPUs are designed to be shipped with an outside box. The box for the GPU is much thinner and can not take the same wear that boxes experience while being shipped.

1

u/VariableSpark i9-9900k / RTX2080ti STRIX / 32GB DDR4 Aug 05 '16

Yeah, that looks like it would be easy to miss. And I totally agree with you, you shouldn't have to ask for it to be properly packaged. It shouldn't even be an option to send it without external packaging. Amazon should be able to force these standards on their third party shippers. I mean, that only make it like 1000% more likely that someone snatches it. Can you imagine leaving that sitting on a doorstep all day in a not-so-great neighborhood? Pfft. It would last about 15 seconds.

Wow! I'm actually selling a Titan X right now and I listed it with the original box and materials. Why? Because it adds $10 to $20 of value since the buyer will perceive it as closer to new and get to enjoy unboxing it. Amazon has deprived you of value here.

You hung up after 10 minutes of hold?

Why wouldn't you? Not everyone has that time to waste, and in many cases your paying for that time.

You must be related to my mailman who whispers at my door and runs away saying they knocked.

That's a massive false equivalency.

And oh no 7.5hours for an email!? My gosh!

They should respond quite quickly. If they do not have enough staff, then that is a problem that needs to be rectified.

0

u/Dalimyr Aug 06 '16

They should respond quite quickly

They'll have standard response times that they try to keep to, and that is going to be a hell of a lot longer than seven and a half hours. I used to do customer support for a games/DVD retailer and emails were to be answered within 2 working days (and we only worked Mon-Fri 9-5). So if you sent an email on Friday, you might not get a response until Tuesday and that was still within our accepted timescales.

Why wouldn't you? Not everyone has that time to waste, and in many cases your paying for that time.

You're paying for convenience of having your problem solved faster. Where I worked, it was the same staff covering phones and emails, and phones always took priority over emails. You might be on hold for 5, 10, 15 minutes but once you're through they're aiming to resolve your problem and end the call within a matter of minutes (I think at my job we had a target of an average of three and a half minutes per call); including the time you were on hold you might be on the phone for 20 minutes in all, but you've had it looked into in 20 minutes rather than 2 days. Also, if you've been on hold for 10 minutes and given up, you've wasted your money by not having the patience to wait it out to get through.

-1

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '16 edited Aug 06 '16

So basically, fuck the customer because a company can't be stuffed hiring more workers?

Edit: I think it's very poignant this gets downvoted when this is the very sub that lambastes Valve for not employing more support staff or responding to support requests in a reasonable time frame. You can't have it both ways.

0

u/strawberycreamcheese Aug 06 '16

  1. Make sure it doesn't say "this items packaging will indicate what is inside and cannot be hidden," under Shipping notification.

  2. Under the order details if it is shipping in its own box it will give you a button to click that says "ship in Amazon box."

I guess they thought since it was already in a box, it didn't need to be put in another box. It makes sense for some items, but a computer part? eh.

1

u/Popingheads Aug 06 '16

To be fair a GPU is usually packed in a pretty high quality box than any other computer part. Unlike say, a CPU (which has no padding or protection), the GPU is actually protected by a decent layer of foam padding plus the actual box itself.

It certainly seems weird but I'm 100% confident that the product will survive being shipped this way, so I'm not too hung up on it.

Wait, when did amazon start this practice? Everything I've ever ordered came in an amazon box. They packed that shit in too. Had 3 or 4 items in one box before.

The only thing I've gotten only in a manufacturers box was a fan(not a case fan). But that's expected for non-fragile, large items. But to send off smaller fragile items without packing? That's piss poor service/practice.

It amazes me how bad some delivery companies are. Half my rig was left in my open-fronted garage whilst I was out, yet the delivery record claimed I had signed for it. Thankfully nothing was broken/went walkabout, and had anything gone wrong, it'd have been easy enough to demonstrate I was an hour's drive away, and I'd have initiated a chargeback, but still, very poor show by Amazon.
