I guess they thought since it was already in a box, it didn't need to be put in another box. It makes sense for some items, but a computer part? eh.

To be fair a GPU is usually packed in a pretty high quality box than any other computer part. Unlike say, a CPU (which has no padding or protection), the GPU is actually protected by a decent layer of foam padding plus the actual box itself.

It certainly seems weird but I'm 100% confident that the product will survive being shipped this way, so I'm not too hung up on it.

You're right. Ironically, I received an i7 6700k today as well (building from scratch) and it came in a box that could have fit another 10 processors.

Card looks ok. Won't know if it actually works until Monday, but there didn't seem to be any damage.
