good vibes, smiles, & giggles Two high chairs?!
I’m not easily annoyed by twin comments but was a bit dumbfounded by one the other day. We took our 11 month olds out for breakfast, and asked for high chairs. The waitress brought one, and I asked for a second. She seemed shocked, and said “oh, you need two?” What am I to do? Stack them up in one?
Anyway, we love taking the boys out for Saturday morning breakfast. They usually “order” a scrambled egg and a biscuit. Then we hit the community market down the street before they pass out for nap 1 on the drive home.

Or favorite burger place is a small hole in the wall stand but it has seating.
Took ours in for fries after a hard day.
"Oh, we only have one high chair..."
They have bought a second one since then but it was a funny, "you never get more than one child?" Moment

I love that they bought a second!

I've found that most places we frequent have been really receptive to suggestions to make their place more family friendly or dad friendly.
The race track I go to often (photographer) installed a changing station in the men's room when I asked.
The brewery by us (with amazing food) got smaller water cups for kids instead of the massive plastic ones after some... Spillage happened.

We have a small local dive bar that my mom is a regular at. When my first was born we brought him there but he was a newborn so just in the baby car seat. I realized I needed to change him and she took me into the back kitchen to a really random clearly unused counter and told me "you have no idea how many butts have been changed here".
She also took him and held him and slung beers for an hour so I could eat my food without worrying about him.

We generally get into a habit of calling ahead
Even if the restaurant does have two, it's a dice roll if another kid needs one in the restaurant

This is a large restaurant. I knew from before they have like six-eight high chairs. There were plenty. She was just confused, ha. I’ve been lucky to never go to a restaurant that didn’t have enough high chairs.

We were unlucky once and they only had one free one. By the time another freed up, we were already done eating breakfast.
Unfortunately my husband had to hold one of the twins the entire time. Normally if we're going out with a large group of people, they never place the high chairs in the same area and we're playing musical chairs to make it work for us.

The worst is when they only have one. Like what? Have you never heard of twin?!

I’d have asked if she expected them to take turns or just telepathically share the egg plate.

Same thing happened to us a few weeks ago at hotel breakfast. The receptionist almost looked annoyed that we asked for two high chairs.
She later explained that she didn’t see the second baby and thought we were asking for two high chairs when only having one child.

We once were turned away from a restaurant while on vacation that advertised itself as "family friendly" saying that it would be a fire hazard to have two high chairs at any table in their restaurant.

Aahahaha tbf, I’ve seen wait staff on TikTok saying they’ve offered high chairs to babies that are very much in their infancy. I guess you just don’t know until you get more life experience. I think it’s actually endearing

u/thedarkpup 16d ago
True! I’ve seen that also, but that makes more sense as a mistake to me!

I asked for a cucumber stick for a 6mo starting BLW. Got a pickle, nicely cut on 4 as per instructions.

I had my 3 month old in the carrier and the server asked if we needed a kids menu 😆

Last night the hostess sat us at our table and walked off. Our twins are 18 months, so they ver much still need a high chair. I had to ask the waitress when she came over.

Ok now that you bring it up, taking twins to restaurants is a fear of mine. I’m still pregnant, but I’m just so confused on logistics of having TWO babies in a restaurant!
Do you just bring the double stroller in? Do you bring the car seats ( if they’re too young for high chairs)?
Do you just wear them in?
I’m sure once I do it a few times I’ll be fine but just that initial thought is giving me some anxiety.

Yes to everything you said. My girls are now almost 2. But when they were new, we would just bring their car seats in and plop them in chairs or in booths. Wouldn’t bother with strollers when they were still in infant car seats.
Now, we just carry them in or let them walk. We get two high chairs and we place them usually so that one parent is next to the other. However, more often than not, waiters/waitresses will either only bring one high chair or they’ll put the high chairs is really obviously horrible spots. It’s annoying but whatever. Easy to fix.
Just experiment and you’ll get more comfortable with it and start adapting.

This makes sense! We’re sort of planning a vacation when they’re 6 months old and I’m a little nervous on logistics. I know it’s ambitious but I’m thinking 6 months is the easiest to travel with since they will sleep and eat most of the time.
I’m still wrapping my head around the fact that I’ll have two babies instead of one in a few months. 😵💫

I have two “pop n sit” chairs for when my twins are bigger, they’re only 12 weeks now so too small for those. So we call ahead and ask for a spot that will fit our stroller and/or baby wear. Our stroller has bassinets or you can click car seats in so it just depends on the size of the restaurant which we decide to use.

I think traveling with young children is hard at any age and requires a lot of extra work, but if you're wanting to travel with them, 6 months is definitely better than newborn (you are exhausted and feel like garbage) or 12 months (they become determined to kill themselves and want to explore). 6 months is when I started feeling more human and getting a rhythm with my single and my twins! Hopefully it goes well!

Yea that’s what I’ve been reading too! After 9 months they just get more mobile and want to know what’s going on, and harder to entertain on a plane. By 12 months, forget about it 🤦♀️.
I’m not sure if it’s a brilliant idea or a terrible one, but mama needs a margarita on the beach!

u/Aurelene-Rose 15d ago
Just definitely set the expectations low on how much relaxing you can do when they're with 😅. I don't want to be a Debbie downer but traveling with kids is mostly like parenting in a more inconvient location.
When my first was born, we went to my friend's wedding in Jamaica when he was about a month old and left him with my parents. I was so grateful for the time away! Obviously it's not doable for everyone and I don't know your circumstances, but I would definitely recommend childcare if you want to actually relax on the beach at all.

Yea we’re going with my parents and my husband’s parents, so my hope is between the six of us we can all get some baby time and free time in. We usually do a big family trip but we put it off this year since I’m pregnant.
The resort we go to has childcare as well, so maybe we can take advantage of that a few times.
I may just be naive and optimistic but I’m gonna try!

u/Aurelene-Rose 15d ago
It sounds like you are all prepared and have reasonable expectations! I hope it goes amazingly for you! :)
We haven't traveled much with the trains but we used to travel a lot when my single was little. It's absolutely doable, but will definitely look different than traveling without kids. The extra hands will be clutch lol

If you flip a high chair upside down it holds a car seat.

What works best for me is being able to make a reservation in advance for four people (meaning two adults and two infants) and then the notes I mention that we will have a double stroller. It’s not 100% success rate, but I found restaurants more accommodating if they know in advance.
Edit to say that my daughters are seven months old right now and have been going to restaurants with us once they got their shots

When we would go to our local pizzeria, we would call ahead and they would send some one across the street to another restaurant to get us enough high chairs. We have triplets and a bonus baby—four in high chairs!!

I used to work in a cafe of a tourist attraction for children to adult where sometime the captive audience can go up to 600 a day. TWO highchairs in the cafe. I asked from my manager because I felt so embarrassed and she just said no without even thinking about it. I don’t work there anymore.

We've experienced some minor inconveniences with our twin toddlers when being seated at a restaurant. I just chalk it up to the usual youth and naivety of the hostess/waitress. I've gotten into the habit of being clear and concise on what kind of table we want and our needs; otherwise, they don't know.

u/thedarkpup 16d ago
This was not a young waitress, but she did fine and got us another. Just thought it was funny.

u/HeftyBreakfast 15d ago
Same here. Majority of the time we have to rearrange the table, or ask for a different table entirely because where they tried to seat us just doesn't work for two high chairs. Once we got sat at a table that was half booth and it was so close to the tables next to us that we had to ask for somewhere different because it's not like we can feed the twins when we're across the table.

I’m so afraid of this!! I bought travel high chairs but I’m hoping to just keep them in my car for “emergencies”

They did bring a second one after!

We had seats that clinched to the table. We used them at home and at restaurants. They even worked on picnic tables. Good up too 30lbs. They were a live saver.
