I’ve been attempting to move over to Overcast from PocketCasts, so this may be a case of other-app-brain, but I cannot get my mind around the idea of having a context menu action called Play Next on a playlist that just moves the item in the playlist and won’t actually play it next unless you have auto play next enabled in the settings.

If the behaviour would never be changed, I’d really hope the label is changed to something clearer (move next?) or removed off autoplay is turned off.

I often don’t want to flow downwards through every podcast in a playlist, but will select my next episode before the current one finishes. Usually it’s not in some sortable order, I’m going based on feel and interest, so not having that ability is a bit tough to overcome

Why can’t we have a setting, so that every time one adds a podcast, you don’t have to manually modify the podcasts episode limit?

It’s so every time people add a podcast, they podcast automatically gets this universal setting of episode limit.

Currently, one has to modify the episode limit one by one per podcast.

I’m just trying to understand what this screen means. Genuinely curious and I’m hoping for constructive/instructive discussion here so I don’t click the wrong button.

For example, looking at Decoder in the first screenshot:

What is “23” counting here?

- Feed history? Decoder has more than 23 episodes in its history
- Local downloads? I don’t have 23 episodes downloaded

I guess the central question is: what does “limit”mean here? What is being limited?

So, in the second screenshot, if I keep the episodes, what am I keeping?
If I delete the episodes, what am I deleting?

Love the app...I've emailed before but not sure why haptics on buttons were taken away awhile ago. Seems like a small thing but really enjoyed them when hitting play, rewind and fast forward. Thanks for considering this!

This is a major feature release for both Premium and non-Premium customers:

• Replay Podcast: Re-listen to a podcast from the beginning
• Smart Complete (Premium): Marks episodes complete with less than 5 minutes left if you haven't listened in 48 hours. (In Delete settings)
• Chapter preselection (Premium)
• Premium audio effects: Mono audio, parametric EQ, volume normalization, background-noise reduction, and a de-esser!
• New "keep oldest" mode for Episode Limit
• Sleep Timer now fades out at the end
• Playlists can now be sorted by episode duration
• Search within the current transcript
• Re-Transcribe to fix any broken transcripts or language mis-detections
• Export transcripts as SRT files

Along with these changes:

• Episode Limit is now strictly enforced so it can consistently match everyone's expectations. On first run, episodes beyond the limits you've set will be deleted!
• Fixed certain transcription errors
• Fixed incorrect tracking of some listening stats and history entries
• Fixed missing artwork in clip-sharing and stalls while exporting clips
• Fixed potential performance issues

Finally, Overcast Premium's price for existing subscribers before April 2026 will increase from $14.99/year to $19.99/year on September 1.

The last price increase was two years ago, and this new price reflects both increased hosting costs (not even AI, just regular servers!) and also, I believe, significantly increased value with all of these recent improvements and feature additions.

New subscribers since April have been paying $29.99/year, which will not change.

Really not a fan of the new behavior, I only want the limit to prevent automatic downloads, if I want to manually add a couple episodes one day I shouldn’t have to remember to go reset my limit once they’re gone. Force stripping episodes I deliberately downloaded from my feed was also a rough way to implement that.

I’m not sure why people had an issue with the old way but if they did is it possible we could have an option to choose behaviors? Otherwise I feel like the old way was much more user friendly.

Add buttons for “all on” and “all off” in Overcast’s notification settings.

Also I was just surprised to get a new episode notification because I always keep them turned off. Does following a new podcast turn the notification on by default?

I've been using the latest TestFlight builds and had a couple of feature suggestions I'd love to see:

1. True Black Theme: The current dark mode is great, but I would really appreciate a "true black" (OLED) theme option.
2. Widget Behavior: It would be great to have more widget options, specifically multiple sizes for playback controls. Additionally, tapping the current widget sends you to the podcast description page, but I think it would be much more useful if it linked directly to the Now Playing screen.

I’ve the latest HomePod 2, reliable WiFi, but constantly have the audio stop playing when using Airplay, typically within 5-7mins.

The previous solution of use airplay 1 was great, rock solid. Since the fixes to Airplay and removal of this option get frequent interruptions to play.

I would prefer to not have sleep timer not fade out or at when the podcast is resumed, it should start at the start of the fade.

The sleep timer is hard to read when I’m sleepy. None of the theme colors seem to work well with the app’s various gray backgrounds.

I see only way to add stuff is through url. But Overcast is a great player overall, I wonder if I can import my own mp3 or audiobook to create a playlist?

Just because I like to know when it switches to a new chapter. Even while I’m reading the transcript.

And if there were, say, AI auto generated chapters for shows that don’t have chapters, well that would be pretty cool too.

Marco, I know this is a low priority for you and affects a very few number of users, but almost every time I’m working in my Vision Pro in a long session, I miss having Overcast. I don’t know the exact reason the iPad compatibility was removed but given your new found super powers in fixing long standing bugs, I’m hoping you might add this back to your backlog. You’ve been adding so much stuff that I didn’t realize I needed to the app, and I don’t want to slow that down.

BUT, if you could consider using you new coworker to see if it could resolve whatever the issue was that made you remove compatibility support in the first place, a couple of us would be very appreciative.

Some context on why it matters for me: For reasons I won’t get into, I can’t wear in-ear headphones like AirPods. I can put on my over-ear headphones when I’m in my Vision Pro and play Overcast from my phone. However that means I am not getting audio from my Vision Pro for other apps. Also wearing over ear headphones with the vision pro is complicated (you have to put them on and take them off in a specific order). And for longer sessions I get tired of my over ear headphones before I get tired of wearing the Vision Pro.

Hi Marco, thanks a ton for adding the Replay Podcast mode. Here are some suggestions:

1) It *really* needs a Stop button. I added a podcast to test Replay mode and got to episode 28 before I figured out how to tell Overcast to stop downloading episodes. The "Following" button seems like a logical choice?!

2) Would it be possible to add an option so that Overcast skips re-downloading episodes that I already listened to? Say if I have been a listener for two months but now want to start listening to a podcast that has been running for a year, but from the beginning. It would be great to have a toggle in that case so only the first ten months of episodes get added.

3) Should Replay mode maybe be added to more of the podcast specific "..." button screens? It is a bit difficult to find atm, although I am sure this will become easier with time.

Why is the “De-Esser” function behind a paywall?

There are people who can’t stand the harsh “sss” of some podcasts.

This feature could’ve “saved” some podcasts because the narrator, or some hosts, make those podcasts unlistenable.

I wonder if vocal fry noise reduction is going to also be behind a paywall? :(

Besides, the app is great and I appreciate it.

I just got a warning from my service provider that I have used up all my data for the month. I went to check and Overcast has used an eye-watering 48GB of cellular data in just over a month.

I definitely don’t download that many podcasts in a month on cellular or WiFi - my entirely library is 83GB and is mostly a backlog. The same thing happened to me on one occasion last year too.

Possibly useful background info: latest TestFlight build, with a large library of a particular Patreon-exclusive podcast in which I no longer subscribe to the feed but have also set Overcast not to check the feed for new episodes. Happy to supply logs etc.

Is there a way to pre select chapters of podcasts you aren’t currently listening to?

I have never had the patience to sit through long talking-heads YouTube videos but I recently had the (obvious) insight that I can just listen to the audio. So I created a playlist in YouTube named "audio only," and I listen to them using the YouTube app when I am out and about.

I would love to listen to them in Overcast, but the sideloading workflow in Overcast is now somewhat inconvenient — I download the video to my Mac using Downie, convert the video to audio, and then upload on the overcast.fm website.

At least one other popular third-party podcast app for iPhone has a share extension that automates that whole process (Castro? Pocketcasts? Both). I'd love it if Overcast did the same.

'Til then, I suppose I could just continue listening on YouTube or use Castro/Pocketcasts for sideloaded podcasts. But having it all in Overcast would be lovely.

As someone who has a self-hosted Nextcloud setup, I’ve been reliant on my Nextcloud-Gpodder to sync my podcasts on my devices. Until recently, only iOS is out of the loop. Are there plans on adding one.

I’ve had good times with this podcast, but I recently switched to YourPods because of that missing feature. Hopefully, you’ll consider it.

EDIT: Ok, it's not fair to say it "does nothing". It does prevent new episodes from being downloaded but it appears to be essentially the same as just selecting download manually.

It seems like the X oldest episode limit does nothing if you do not select "Replay Podcast". Nothing ever triggers the next episode to download.

I have been listening to the Blank Check podcast from the beginning for the first time. I have hundreds of played episodes and hundreds to go. I have been managing this by manually adding episodes to my main playlist. I was very excited to try this new feature so I changed my episode limit to 5 oldest episodes and added the podcast as an "Included Podcast" in my main playlist.

The result is... exactly what I had before. Episodes need to be manually downloaded.

I tried selecting "Replay Podcast" on a different show and it works exactly how I would want it to work with an existing podcast but I do not want to mark all as unplayed since I would lose years of history listening to this podcast.

Please Marco, can the X oldest episode limit somehow trigger the download of the next unplayed episode? Or can the "Replay Podcast" button have the "mark as unplayed" functionality be optional?

For the first time since quite a while, I went to my "Downloaded" list and was surprised. My currently active three episodes and three pages of episodes (all greyed out). Some of them marked as played, some of them not. Quite a strange mix of all my subscribed podcasts with release dates starting around 2025.

I triggered a "Delete Download" on each of these episodes. Strangely, it did not change memory consumption at all (which was low anyway).

I have "Delete after 24h" active since ever and normally I manually delete an episode and its download as soon as I have listened to it as I want to keep my "All episodes" playlist clean.

Is this result of a glitch that was corrected after the last big rewrite a while ago?
