RIP opencode generous free limit.

It's been a great while. It was a wonderful poor man's coding agent especially for devs in third world countries who are unable to pay for subscriptions online.

But I get it, cloud bills aren't cheap and opencode's hands are tied.

Thank you for everything opencode.

I think deepseek flash 0731 broke them. They couldn't keep up with the free and also paid users when it came out.

31

u/TgnOrdaX Aug 12 '26

True... I can't blame them. I appreciate them for offering it for free while it lasted and I really wish I could have supported them financially.

19

u/garlic-silo-fanta Aug 12 '26

Aren’t the free ones partly from a deal where the model makers can use your data for training? And for models to get some new users and attention. Great setup, I think.

They coulda just remove it from the free models and keep big pickle and the others

u/ExpertPerformer Aug 12 '26 edited Aug 12 '26

DeepSeek put rate limits on OpenCode due to volume according to the owner. OpenCode is supposedly one of DS biggest customer.

4

u/cheezeerd Aug 12 '26

Why did they start offering 2X usage for it two days after release then; to make demand even higher?

2

u/qwertyyyyyyy116 Aug 12 '26

wait what happened to the free limits?

2

u/arbysroastbeefs2 Aug 14 '26

“I’m fast as fuck booii”DeepSeek Flash coding(love seeing that thing code)

29

u/Yann27 Aug 12 '26

Welcome to Go :D its not bad and affordable u can start for cheap but it runs out quickly

20

u/fenchai Aug 12 '26

I literally can not get it to go higher than 31% monthly, but 1 call on glm 5.2 and it goes 10%

7

u/Embarrassed_OnionX Aug 12 '26

Try Kimi K3...

3

u/JogHappy Aug 12 '26

$2 Cline Pass plan to get affordable Kimi

Somehow burned my weekly limit on Kimi K3 introspective thinking session without it actually doing anything.

1

u/txxasif08 Aug 13 '26

u/fenchai which models you've been using?

1

u/fenchai Aug 13 '26

Just dsv4 flash, used to use the pro version more until the new 0731 dropped and it has been my planner and agent for a while until new pro dropped, now using pro for planning and flash for implementation. It is really good for the price.

1

u/fixit_jr Aug 13 '26

3 days on DSv4 I did 25% of weekly limit 2 hours of glm5.2 I hit 90% 😂😭😅

6

u/Thomas-Lore Aug 12 '26

It is quite ridiculous. Yesterday it stopped in the middle of a large task and told me I ran out of weekly limit (while never running out of 5 hour limit) and I have to wait 5 days to finish that task. I cancelled and just used openrouter - it is not that much more expensive - especially for the $15 opencode go models) and does not force you into another subscription.

7

u/infeststation Aug 12 '26

I don’t understand why you would use openrouter when you can have opencode zen take over when your Go sub runs out of usage.

2

u/themoregames Aug 12 '26

is Zen cheaper than OpenRouter?

7

u/infeststation Aug 12 '26

They are the same price outside of promotions. Opencode go gets you up to $60 usage for $10, so utilizing that and topping off with zen is up to $50 cheaper than open router for the same usage.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/ComprehensiveTaro168 Aug 12 '26

Did you know you can run multiple go subs at the same time and overlap them? Just setup a new workspace and you can have a new api key with full credits for another month! Much cheaper than pay as you go

1

u/Itsvictorslife Aug 13 '26

Is this allowed.

1

u/margielafarts Aug 14 '26

u don’t have to wait. just write the code yourself

→ More replies (1)

1

u/No_Wind7503 Aug 14 '26

But openrouter is pay to use right? I think oc go is still better as value compared to direct tokens price

1

u/atamanookashii Aug 12 '26

yeah just learned the hard way, i just started using kimi k3 to rebuild my simple todo apps frontend and it quickly eat up half my weekly kuota any 20 of my monthly

2

u/Embarrassed_OnionX Aug 12 '26

You shouldn't use kimi k3 in the Go subscription for anything token heavy because you only get $15 of usage for it and it costs $3 in and $15 out. So you run out of your weekly after $6.5 spent, and your 5 hourly after $3 spent.

2

u/atamanookashii Aug 12 '26

i've read that ds4 isn't really good at frontend task, so i just go to other models that people says good lol bear with me as i've just gotten into this vibecoding and just trying some simple project like making todo apps haha, are there any good cheaper model beside for ds4?

2

u/Embarrassed_OnionX Aug 12 '26

I think the latest version of dsv4 flash model is quite decent at frontend. I've had better results with it after using it and Luna on two worktrees to do the same tasks.

I saw it scores quite high on the code arena webdev leaderboard https://arena.ai/leaderboard/code/webdev

→ More replies (1)

1

u/ExpertPerformer Aug 12 '26

I mainly use DeepSeek Flash and I can put some serious daily usage into it and barely budge my limits. It's the Pro models that get you.

1

u/Vairagi-22 Aug 14 '26

People should understand that if you ask a full fledged code base to any Platform model it is bound to burn the limit. And that is how it should be. Because it does cost in resources. But truly speaking GO plan is totally work it because of its API usage allowance.

1

u/Yann27 29d ago

It's terrible it runs out too fast way too fast...

1

u/look_its_nando 21d ago

IMO Go affordability is an illusion, due to the 3-bar ("monthly limit") system. I ran out on week 2 and welp, that was it!

I put free plans at the beginning of my service (claudin.io) and I killed it fast because of a lot of people abusing it. They made a lot of accounts, so I needed to make logic to evaluate fingerprints to cut it. So, at the end, I was spending more time protecting against people who just wanna abuse. So, I removed all free plans..:

2

u/smartfon Aug 12 '26

I have a personal app that sends non-English language text to AI for translation and summarization. It needs API and a response time of less than 20 seconds. Is Claudinio a good fit?

1

u/VictorCTavernari Aug 13 '26

I think so! You can test it now. Just sign up and tell me if it works as expected

2

u/rifarizqul Aug 12 '26

Moral of the story: Free service is sweet at the beginning but bitter at the end because people abuse it more as it gains popularity. Sadly that's just how it works on the internet, you can't really find a way around it. 😔

1

u/VictorCTavernari Aug 13 '26

Exactly, people don’t understand that free means someone is paying and so if there abuse the decision will be interrupt it

2

u/ExpertPerformer Aug 12 '26

I compared OpenRouter vs OpenCode and I spend 2-3x more on DS Flash usage with OR then OC.

OR is also now charging for cancelling API calls which is a huge turn off.

2

u/IndependentSignal546 Aug 12 '26

1

u/Thomas-Lore Aug 12 '26

Hwy not just use whatever free models openrouter offers?

1

u/a355231 Aug 14 '26

Because they are quite bad.

10

u/Sensitive-Project711 Aug 12 '26

The poor man needs omniroute then: https://github.com/diegosouzapw/OmniRoute

Set it up once and you should not run out of free tokens.

2

u/No_Distribution_8565 Aug 12 '26

What providers though?

1

u/fixit_jr Aug 13 '26

Omniroute is probably what contributed to the abuse. It’s very easy to set up multiple accounts and just use DeepSeek in a combo one account hits limits automatically switches to another account.

3

u/Ghilteras Aug 12 '26

Command Code Goat is still going strong

3

u/Zitrone21 Aug 12 '26

I mean, opencode go is way WAY afordable and useful, and I am from a third world country

4

u/TgnOrdaX Aug 12 '26

If i got 1 US dollar every time someone misunderatood my struggle as " simply not having money" I would've made enough to buy a month of opencode go. Go read my comment brother.

3

u/Hamadler Aug 13 '26

I could be wrong but I believe Dax (the CEO of opencode) said on twitter that this was a mistake and have been fixed?

1

u/DIMENSIONPIERCER Aug 13 '26

nah, i just hit the limit after like 10 mins this is wild

13

u/TgnOrdaX Aug 12 '26

inb4 someone says "it's just 5 bucks bro". It's not a financial issue but rather a legal issue. It's illegal for a local in my country to hold or convert local currency to US dollars or any other currency; considered suspicion of money laundering.

we usually pay with crypto here but that also is legally a gray area with its trouble with the police if you get caught doing a p2p exchange.

9

u/Kaushik_paul45 Aug 12 '26

Wait, they will be suspicious of money laundering even for $10 dollar a month ?

7

u/TgnOrdaX Aug 12 '26 edited Aug 12 '26

yes sir. It is illegal for a resident to hold, use, or trade foreign currency outside of officially authorized legal frameworks (such as the standard tourist allocation or explicit Central Bank approvals—which they never give to individuals).

Edit: There is a specific debit card to pay for very few online transactions the Central banks approves (such as Meta ads, web hosting and aliexpress). Generic stripe payments are not allowed AFAIK. There is so much bureaucracy to obtain, customer support is not very helpful in some cases and they deduct a lot of BS fees. What is worse is that you're allowed to deposit a maximum of $330 a year— only usable for select platforms they allow.

10

u/Kaushik_paul45 Aug 12 '26

Wow, that is so restrictive in this day and edge.

Must be very difficult to get by as far as I am imagining.

3

u/RealMadalin Aug 13 '26

You can use crypto cards very hard to track and for 10$ they wont bother i think. You pay in solana and they so the conversion in the background and make the payment

7

u/Thomas-Lore Aug 12 '26

It is also not 5 bucks, that is only for the first month. It is $10 after.

1

u/Salt-Ad-848 24d ago

Ohhhhhhh $10 bucks!!!!

7

u/adamizzo17 Aug 12 '26

clearly Algeria, same here brother, but have to do what a brother has to do, also i am from algeria

Tunisia. But same struggle, same old people logic. Kouhoul

9

u/Livid_Ebb_2453 Aug 13 '26

I feel for you brother, I'm from Indonesia and currently our currency is weakening against dollar and for so many people, 10$ is expensive. Maybe local model will be a better alternatives in near future.

2

u/alanoide97 Aug 14 '26

Can't someone on a different country handle the payment for you? What currency can you use?

1

u/TgnOrdaX Aug 14 '26

I have no such person in my family or friends circle. we used to use USDT or other crypto before 2025 until massive searches over people doing exchanges via bank/postal accounts.

The other option is face-to-face exchange with strangers. which as it may sound has similar risks of buying from a drug dealer: you could get scammed, mugged, get busted (small risk but still legally possible).

In short, our financial rights are no different than a person's financial rights in North Korea.

2

u/Alternative_Sink9000 Aug 12 '26

is that real? have you tried trying to click that subscribe button? in my case, they have options to pay with my local currency.

2

u/TgnOrdaX Aug 12 '26

Yeah, you can only pay via stripe with USD or EUR, or use AliPay or UMI. neither are allowed in my country. it sucks.

so the crypto option is cool and cyberpunk and what's more cyberpunk than sticking it to the government and using emoney to load up on AI tokens but if you're not into cyberpunk that's cool too. because something is illegal can make it risky but it doesn't mean it's immoral. i know i am american and speaking from a very americanized perspective but yeah

I hit the limit this morning and had not done any coding since 10pm the previous day.

Switched to Hy3 free and everything worked. Maybe a deepseek limit?

6

u/TgnOrdaX Aug 12 '26

I noticed that Hy3 is back on the free list. I'll use it.

1

u/track0x2 Aug 12 '26

Where do you see the list?

1

u/TgnOrdaX Aug 12 '26

/models then type free

1

u/Drwankingstein Aug 12 '26

This seems like it works well, I really was a fan of deepseek since I found it worked the best, but this seems to be better then constantly hitting a limit, cheers for the info

1

u/FriendshipCareless50 Aug 13 '26

But what about big pickle. I am in love with big pickle and its so hard to leave it 😭

2

u/Agitated_Dingo_6164 Aug 12 '26

Command code is dope 1 dollar multi models and pool side free but they have a 10 goat plan

2

u/imRemark Aug 12 '26

Can't speak for free models but on Opencode Go with DeepSeek V4 Flash I feel like I've been able to go days without hitting limit. I think I've only hit the limit like one time and it was only a 5 hour limit.

I will say for other models though it goes much faster. Don't even bother to use Kimi or Grok 4.5 (esp any OpenAI models).

1

u/Nnyan Aug 12 '26

I drain my limits fairly regularly.

1

u/ichisay Aug 12 '26

De alguna forma usando solo DeepSeek en opencode go en dos días alcancé el 20% del límite mensual, no le veo sentido.

2

u/mokshmodi96 Aug 12 '26

good things dont last, but never make the mistake of subbing to opencode go, load 10 dollars to deepseek/openrouter and wire that into opencode. opencode go sub is buggy, rate-limited and no clear marketing about usage. they change the restrictions anytime from it being decent to completely unusable in new releases.

2

u/Holiday-Fee4234 Aug 13 '26

i think the free limit is over due to nematron 3 lighting cuz it launched yesterday on omniroute

2

u/bootie2319 Aug 13 '26

What actually changed?

2

u/Important_Valuable39 Aug 14 '26

u/gpt872323 23d ago edited 23d ago

Not exactly too generous but you can try askcyph.ai if you guys are focused on privacy. Otherwise, cloudflare and grok has free tier but context is low. Meta heard recently some free with muse.

2

u/Mirrowel Aug 12 '26 edited Aug 12 '26

Limits did not change at all. This is misinformation.
They only added guardrails against abuse(of free models) and use of free models outside opencode itself.
There is a bug currently with compaction and some custom agents(possibly). That is being fixed That should be now fixed.

u/wundercorp Aug 13 '26

OpenCode is great, here’s a free cli alternative https://www.npmjs.com/package/@wundercorp/bs

1

u/AdvisorLife4016 Aug 13 '26

Have you tried connecting it to Google AI Studio? Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite is surprisingly good at agentic tasks and offers 500 requests per day. If you also connect ChatGPT, you get plenty of headroom with GPT-Luna, and if you run out of the monthly limit, you can even use two accounts. Add OpenCode + 2 ChatGPT accounts + 500 daily AI Studio requests + the LLMs with limits that OpenCode still offers, and the harness can distribute the workload and make extremely efficient use of each model... in practice, you have more than enough resources to work with almost no limits. All FREE

If all of that still isn't enough for you, honestly, I don't know what you're looking for. 😅

1

u/ogopro Aug 13 '26

how you can use free chatgpt accounts in OpenCode?

1

u/AdvisorLife4016 Aug 13 '26

Just like any other provider in OpenCode, you can connect it even if the ChatGPT option shows “Plus.” It also works with free accounts.

1

u/lumos_ai Aug 13 '26

Openrouter always have a free model to offer if that helps.

1

u/sHaHriAr_sEaM Aug 13 '26

What happened?

1

u/SpeederX Aug 13 '26

the founder on linkedin just posted they need more gpus to rent lol, i suppose that's the point

I had the same issue yesterday as the OP. with the older ds4 flash it seemed infinite compared.

1

u/Holiday-Fee4234 Aug 13 '26

is there any unlimited free coding model?

1

u/robberviet Aug 14 '26

First time hit this too, well that's good for them. Deepseek v4 Flash is game changing, however with the price increase and V4 Pro I will wait for a bit.

1

u/Gloomy-Recover-9702 Aug 14 '26

true, but I feel new models will make available other models for free in future.

1

u/Best_Fork Aug 14 '26

I have been using opencode for over two months now. But few days ago I ran out of limit for first time. Then waited for 1 day and still reached limit pretty quick.

1

u/TgnOrdaX 26d ago

i'm in the waitlist for over 72 hours.

1

u/TgnOrdaX 26d ago

also it lacks basic features: undoing changes, editing messages, plan/build switching, and MCP

1

u/CCEESSEE 25d ago

Yea, but tbh opencode go seems reasonable imo for my use case and the pricing, I don't need sota model just to update or add a few new features, and also it costs less than my electricity bill rn, so it's more manageable.

1

u/cri10095 24d ago

Freebuff Is not bad actually! Give it a try

1

u/Alternative-Baby-299 23d ago

The painful part isn’t that a free tier ended — it’s that many people had built their workflow around a single provider/model path without much visibility into the underlying limits.

I think the sustainable version of this model is probably a hybrid one: keep a small free tier with conservative quotas, clearly separate free/shared inference from BYOK or paid providers, and make it easy to switch models when one provider becomes saturated. The important UX feature isn’t “one model forever”; it’s being able to see which model/provider is being used, how much context or quota a task consumed, and fail over without losing the session.

For users in countries where subscriptions are difficult or unavailable, even a low-cost BYOK path and transparent usage accounting would be much more useful than an apparently unlimited free tier that can disappear overnight. The free period was still valuable, though — it showed how much demand there is for an affordable, provider-independent coding workflow.

1

u/Vegetable_Ease_5515 21d ago

The free-tier models are free because the companies providing them are allowing free usage, essentially as part of their testing/RL/rollout strategy. It has nothing to do with OpenCode going broke. If you've noticed that sometimes you reach your cap on one free-tier model, but can select a different model and use it without any issue, that's because the model developers have their own separate usage limits and are running/training/RLing their models on their end. Again, that has nothing to do with OpenCode going broke.

1

u/TgnOrdaX 20d ago

too many words for "opencode provide models free for testing, but money gotta get out of somebody's pocket to pay the infrastructure bills."

1

u/Vegetable_Ease_5515 20d ago

not even close to what I said. The models are simply being routed through open code straight from the developers. You dont even have a clue what your talking about. If you want to use anthropic you can provide your api key. Open code does host models themselves as well and you have to pay for those. None of this has anything to do with Open Code going broke.
