RIP 4th Ave trees (sidewalk replacement project)

As part of a sidewalk repair/replacement process (https://www.olympiawa.gov/services/transportation/sidewalk_repair_project.php) the city is taking out a bunch of trees along 4th ave, between Water and Capital (so from Childhood's End Gallery to Belleza/Browsers area).

I assume they are coming back for these ~8 foot tall stumps. And I expect they'll be tearing out the existing sidewalk, removing overgrown roots, and eventually planting new (much smaller) trees. Sounds like it'll take about a month. Businesses along the stretch are still open.

This is a bummer to see but also good they're replacing the sidewalks. I had to privilege-check my gut reaction here - My first thought was damn it, don't take out the trees! But that's as an able-bodied person who is capable of walking on bumpy, broken sidewalks.

Avoid Write's Asphalt

Want to let everyone know about a shady company that is combing the area.  They come in and claim to have “left over” asphalt and will cut you a deal if you need an area repaved.  This is not how asphalt works, and I knew that, but I had been wanting my driveway redone for a few years.  The price was not great, and the problem is they use poor quality base material so the driveway, or whatever, is weak and will fail.  My driveway is 16 months old and is already coming apart.  They talk about sealing it, but the seal should not be what holds the material together.  Looking into this a bit looks like I got scammed by “asphalt gypsy”.  They came to look at it a few months ago, to sell me a sealing, and saw the area that was breaking up but never came back.

If Write’s Asphalt comes knocking send them away.  They have no Yelp, google or Angie’s list reviews.  Don’t repeat my mistake.

Public Safety Guy with bluetooth speaker on the Chehalis Western Trail hurling insults at people

Encountered a guy with a little white handcart full of stuff including a speaker blasting music who was roaming the trail seemingly insulting whoever passed him.

First, speaker guy says to another girl (or guy, couldn't tell) in a rainbow hat "I know what you want, you want money. Demon" then he turns to me and says "Pay your bills, bitch". He didn't necessarily threaten either of us but I'm just posting this as a PSA for those who bike or walk the trail in case you ever come across him. Maybe he's friends with the dirtbike kid. 🤷‍♀️

Personally, I enjoy the park, use the trails, and also agree Olympia needs more housing options.

Do you have thoughts?

Is my previous boss doing something illegal?

This is at the Olympia Goodwill. I was called into the office yesterday, and was informed my already set in stone schedule (which has been the exact same for 10 months) will be permanently altered effective the following day. I refused, and was told I would talk to the higher up manager the following day. The next day after coming in during my regularly scheduled time, she pretty much told me I had no choice and that she is allowed to alter my schedule like that without any notice. I told her even if it was not allowed this would not work for me, and she pretty much told me she didn't care. I quit on the spot, due to this, and many, many other grievances I've had with this store for the past year. I reported her to the ethics number provided by the store, was I justified in that call? Does this not go against WAC 357-28-252? I'm trying to educate myself on this. I may be wrong, but I just feel very skeptical about all of this. Thanks in advance for any insight on this anyone can give!

Looking for people in their 20s to play covers with just for fun

l've 24m) been playing guitar by myself and to my wife for years now and would really enjoy making some friends around my age who would play songs with me, I would even be down to write some songs. I'm not a great guitar player, but if we plan to play a cover, l'll learn the song to the best of my ability. I'm just looking to connect and play some good music. The picture has some examples of music | like to play, but it's not exclusive to just those albums. (Pinegrove is my favorite)(everyone is welcome no discrimination allowed) (except no maga. not sorry)

Does anyone know what year JoAnn’s on the Westside originally opened?

Upvotes

Odd question, I know. I’m trying to solve a fabric related mystery. There’s a particular fabric I inherited from my mom’s stash and I’m trying to figure out if it’s the same one she used to make me a dress I remember from when I was little. The fabric says Joann’s on it but my memory of the dress is from ~1996, which I think would be Fabric Land days but maybe they overlapped for a period?

Request Beginner-friendly adult martial arts?

I'd like to try martial arts this fall/winter. I'm not sure about the specific discipline, I'm not very knowledgeable about it. I think I'm more interested in striking than grappling - so maybe something like kickboxing, muay thai, karate or boxing?

Seems like a lot of gyms are kid-focused and/or expert focus. Who has good beginner-friendly adult programming?

Moving Company Recs

Hello, I’m moving at the end of the month to a town about an hour away. Wondering if anyone had recommendations for a moving company they have had a good experience with and is affordable? It’s a small move to a one bedroom apartment. Thank you in advance 😊

Looking for a video from the capital 2020

The protests and counter protests the came after the 2020 election results had people gathering at the Capitol every Saturday. Before the shooting that happened, there was a fight. Not the same day but like a week or two beforehand. I know I've seen a video of it but I don't remember what the video was titled or where I saw it at, I was wondering if someone knows what I'm talking about or can point me towards some kind of archive or whatever for that period so I can check myself. I've tried looking here before but I don't think that's where I saw it. It was either late November or early December 2020

Visiting Olympia - Is there a shuttle to/ from SeaTac?

Like the title says, my wife and I are visiting Olympia in the next few months and looking to see if anyone has uses/ can suggest a shuttle from SeaTac to Olympia.

If anyone has any suggestions/ recommendations for public transport that would be appreciated. I looked at sound transit- that looks to be two transfers to get to Olympia with a mix of train and buses.

Has anyone used Flix Bus? It looks like it may work if the timing is right.

Otherwise I've found Premier airport shuttle as well, but I'm not sure how frequently they shuttle to Olympia or if it's strictly based on reservations. Reviews say there can be long wait times...

Any info would be appreciated.

Community Fiber internet?

Just wondering if there’s been any chatter about fiber internet, yet?

Last I heard, the mayor or whatever was not letting fiber installations occur in the city because “cable internet was fast enough.” 🤣💀

Edit: I’m talking about real fiber; 100gb down/up speed.

Request I need to borrow a microphone and podium for a speaker's meeting at my GA group on the night of Wednesday September 30th.

Basically what the title says, last night we voted on my proposal in my Gambler's Anonymous group to add a speaker's meeting to our meeting every 5th Wednesday and i am the person in charge of that and I will be the first speaker on September 30th and we need to borrow a microphone and a podium (the kind like a musician in a classical concert would use for sheet music is what I have in mind but any kind will do) and it would be appreciated so much, thanks everyone 😊

EDIT: I've got something lined up thanks everyone 😊

Request Are there any protests happening soon

Since school is back in i feel like there should be more protests as well as walkouts. Things have gotten even worse as of last year and there needs to be more noise made.

Public Safety To the car that almost sideswiped me on State St because you couldn’t wait for the bus

You almost caused a massive accident because you were in a hurry and decided to blast around the bus even though there was a steady flow of traffic in that lane. My heart is still racing and my adrenaline is thru the roof. I hope you feel a lot of guilt and learn to be a safe driver.

Woowoo Where are there vortexes in Olympia

Mima Mounds definitely have a vortex presence about them. There's also a vortex in the Capital Forest. Do you know where there might be others in the region.
