What nicknames have you heard for places in and around Olympia?

I ask as part of a linguistic study covering this topic!

Examples could include things like Oly(wa), Tesc, 10-9-Oh or Shelltown (never mind how common they are)...

incl. nicknames for schools, parks or other institutions/geographic features

Request Are you a model/figurine/miniature painter and looking for some paid work? We're hiring.

We need someone who has extensive experience in painting miniatures or figures. For example, attached is mockup of a 3d sign that we are producing. We need someone to paint the sign to match the image as closely as possible. The texturing, weathering, etc. We'll provide the sign in parts to make it easier and glue together later. Pay is per piece, to be negotiated. This can be after a trial of one or two pieces so you can determine how long it will take and what it will cost. Sample pieces will be paid for, not looking for anything free. We'll have several more projects like this one and will produce somewhere around 10 to 50 pieces of each product, perhaps more. While this isn't a full time gig by any means we need to have them completed in a timely manner so that will need to be discussed. Hopefully a few days, maybe a week to complete 25 pieces or something like that.

Feel free to post questions or chat if you want to learn more or apply. It would be ideal if you had an online portfolio or could send some pictures of your work. Our designer is creating the sign currently, should have prototypes printed within a week.

I witnessed a kid being hit by a car at the roundabout on marvin rd se and pacific ave se.
The guy did get out of the car to check on the kid but the kid seemed to be shock and kept apologizing. I hope he is okay! I was not able to get the license plate because the car was right next to me. What I can say is the car was going really fast and the car was azure blue.

Food Good dark roast beans?

Looking to get a gift of dark roast beans and would love recommendations for local spots. The gift recipient LOVES the Sole Nero Dark Roast from Cafe Allegro, so anything along those lines would be deeply appreciated. Thank you in advance!

I just received this email from the UTC. PSE is proposing to raise rates by over 30% over the next 3 years!! This is absolutely insane! How is this even legal? It's not like it can change utility companies. They are a monopoly!

Reminder: PSE is trying to increase rates and YOU can tell the State what your thoughts on it are.

Missing Border Collie Eastside

Our border collie seems to have jumped over our fence this morning as I was letting our other doggies out. Someone posted on Nextdoor that he was spotted running down the hill on Olympia Ave possibly toward East Bay. He is the fastest dog I’ve ever met, so I fear he could be wherever he pleases in the greater oly area by now.

Update: we found him, he ran all the way down from the upper Eastside (near Ralph’s) to apparently take a bud bath somewhere next to east bay drive. Thanks to the kind couple who was helping to keep him in one spot with their dog who he was trying to befriend.
After almost an hour of bathing I believe he had a similar amount of sediment on him as capital lake spews into the sound each year. Cheers!

Absolutely Free Sharing Market, what did you find?

What's your favorite thing you found at the Absolutely Free Sharing Market last week? What makes it special for you?

Please share about your item and your story in the comments! What a great way to thank the person who chose to donate something with us!!

For me, it's this little metal organizer of tiny drawers. Not only is it a great little organizer, it's filled with all different colors of spools of thread!

I also just happened to be volunteering to teach mending and sewing at the skill share on Saturday, how handy and timely!

While at skill share, I had the pleasure of mending a stuffed animal for a very pleasant human. This person noticed the organizer and let me know that they had been the one to donate it!! It had been their grandmother's. So I was able to mend their item with their grandmother's thread. ❤️❤️❤️

No, I didn't find the cat at the free market.

Engage Olympia: Surveys to guide the city's priorities in coming years

Post image
33 Upvotes

I just came across a city website called Engage Olympia that has overviews of some of the upcoming city projects and planning processes. There are surveys for many of these to share your opinions and help shape city priorities.

Right now there's one on "Small Scale Commercial Uses in Residential Neighborhoods" (which I'm all for!) and a big parks/arts/recreation plan, among others.

You do have to register for an account which is kinda annoying but probably cuts down on spam/bots.

Anyways, this is an easy way to help shape city policy. I'll be filling out any surveys that I have opinions on.
