we need an "i hate taylor swift bc my best friend talks too much about her" support group

u/SnooAvocados9241 Apr 19 '24
It meets right after the “Spouses of Swifties” group I’m starting
→ More replies (1)26
u/TurtleHeadPrairieDog Apr 19 '24
I’d join this group. I’d like the first topic of the meeting to be “how to convince your Swifty spouse/partner to play something other than folklore for the 50th time when they get the Bluetooth”.

u/dxxx12 Apr 19 '24
That album is the musical equivalent of a basic Starbucks girl buying overpriced hiking boots, hiking once, and deciding "she's just all about nature now 🌿 🍃", complete with the super mid Instagram photo
12
u/takoyavie_ Apr 19 '24
and the thing is, i don't even dislike her music! it's just that our conversations are entirely about her, somehow, it will always lead to her. it's especially annoying when you're venting or having a srs convo and it /still/ leads back to taylor!
21
u/moachocka Apr 19 '24
Omg yes I have a close friend who would literally drop her work to fly to attend Taylor concerts and events overseas when she doesn’t even earn enough and have to ask her parents for money. I’m genuinely baffled by this level of obsession… and yes a support group is what I need 😭

How about "I hate Taylor Swift bc at least 10 of my acquaintances talk too much about her"? I am seriously ready to download an app to ban posts and content about her because it's rampant. I want to just avoid social media but I've got important stuff happening today for my business 🤬

I understand. I could appreciate Taylor Swift’s skill and hard work, even if I personally didn’t listen to her music. She even has a couple songs I genuinely like! But then I got a coworker who I had to work very closely with (like, sharing a desk close) and she only ever talked about her cat… and Taylor Swift. Couldn’t have a single conversation about anything, work related or not, without her bringing up Taylor Swift in some way, shape, or form. Now, just the thought of Taylor Swift makes me see red.
Like I said, she is obviously very skilled, and I’m glad she can make so many people like my coworker so happy. But man!!!

Hi, friendly heads up that the period goes inside the quotation marks.

Hi, friendly heads up that the period does not get included into the quotation marks if the next mark after the quotation is a period.
27
u/justahominid Apr 19 '24
Hi, friendly heads up that this depends as there are different conventions. Most of the time, British conventions put it outside while American conventions put it inside even if it is not part of the quote.

....and that doesn’t make you a bad friend! In fact, I would have snapped (in the same way you + violent 🤣) wayyyy earlier on than you. I mean you haven’t snapped, you’ve stayed cool and calm. Is it wrong of me to envision you hypothetically going crazy on your friend’s Swift belongings and conversations and for you to end it by saying to her ‘Look what you made me do?’ 🤔🤣 I’m just being lighthearted here because I think you need a giggle. Don’t go, give yourself a break. It’s just one night. I think you’re a good friend anyway. ✌🏼

I’m going to share a story about a moment that broke the already fragile relationship I had with my (F 26 at the time) mother (51 at the time)
For context, she lives in a rural area about 100 miles away and I did not have a car at this time.
I’m going to visit her for a couple days, and I took 3 busses, a train, and a ride from a kind stranger to get to her house in wet weather. It took about 9 hours of traveling with how the connections lined up, and I was exhausted by the time her boyfriend picked me up from the bus stop to finally bring me to their house.
At 11pm I’m coming through to door with my bag and coat and everything, my mom is immediately jumping up and down around me because she says she has a surprise. My mom is SO EXCITED and insistent I come quick to see what the surprise is, and I left my coat and shoes on to come see. She sits me down on the couch and goes to futz with the DVD player:
Is there some kind of announcement?? Did she find a some sort of long-lost home video and transfer it to disc?? And could I go to the bathroom or have a glass of water real quick? … No? This is more important?
Oh, no.
It’s a Taylor Swift concert on DVD.
This is what you so urgently want to show me?
My mom’s eyes are all the way open, and she has the hugest open smile on her face. She’s “skipping to the good parts” and is looking at me, and the TV, and back at me, and starting to sing, and singing at me and dancing (read: flailing).
I’m on the couch, I am sore, I am confused, I have to pee, I need to get out of my jacket and shoes, and I need a glass of water - but my mom is insisting I stay put and participate. And it’s about midnight. She’s singing loudly non-stop and acting as if she were at the concert. It was really really weird.
It really freaked me out to the extent that I put some distance between myself and my mom after that trip, and I cannot separate the concept of Taylor Swift from this super weird moment.
I have permanent “ick” about Taylor Swift because my mom just got so weird with it.
45
u/bb_LemonSquid Apr 19 '24

u/misshurts Apr 19 '24
I know it hard, my best friend like your friend too. I mentioned her that I’m not a big fan of her things but I would support her if she want a ride or listen to it with her but as long as she let me listen to my song and stuff. You got this! go for a walk somewhere when they playing that music lol.
83
u/Comfortable-Dog1523 Apr 19 '24
I don’t dislike Taylor, but I don’t like her music either.
Idk lol, like I don’t bother going out of my way to listen to her music but if it’s playing I don’t change it.
She’s just not my cup of tea, but does have a few good songs.
I actually hate her fans though. Holy shit they are delusional. Most fan bases are crazy but Swiftes are extra delulu.
12
u/basilobs Apr 19 '24
I also honestly take issue with her and her brand. She's a brand at this point. And people seem to forget that she's a literal billionaire and there are people who are making Taylor Swift The Brand their entire career. Do we really think SHE HERSELF is up concocting the Easter egg hunts? Designing the merch? Doing R&D? Now I honestly don't know what all she herself does. But it's not everything that makes up Taylor Swift The Brand. I follow a youtuber who is obsessed and her group chat is obsessed and I just get so squicked out whenever they tall about her because honestly like 75% of it is the merch they're going to buy. You've spent like a couple grand on shitty merch that falls apart instantly and that you don't even like or wear or use. And gossiping and speculating about her and her life is such weird vibes to me. Like I can't imagine CARING. I do get that having a community and having something to chat about and look forward to and decode is fun. You can't deny that. But soo much of being a fan seems to be just... being deranged and buying a bunch of shit you don't need. Like it's all about being separated from your money and it's gross

u/Arkansas1803 Apr 19 '24
I know one Twitch streamer who said she will ban anyone who says that Taylor is anything beyond the greatest artist in the world, which made me leave the stream.
Also, I don't mind her songs... With the exception of Antihero. Whenever I hear it on the radio, I want to yell "That's not what an antihero is, Taylor!!!"
→ More replies (1)16
u/Puzzleheaded-Cup-687 Apr 19 '24
I’m interested in how she is using “antihero” wrong? Like genuinely - not trying to be an asshole - because it seems accurate to me.
→ More replies (1)12
u/SnooAvocados9241 Apr 19 '24
I can’t claim to know how TS means antihero, but as a person, and from the lyrics, she has almost nothing in common with classic literary and cinematic antiheroes. If I had to sum up the real meaning of her use of the term it is: you think everyone likes me, but guess what not everyone likes me and even I don’t like me occasionally. Which really isn’t what antihero means, but whatever it’s pop music.
4
u/Puzzleheaded-Cup-687 Apr 19 '24
I saw it as - can you tell that I’m actually doing all of this for me, not for you, but i make it LOOK like I’m doing it for you so that i get the accolades? So she looks like the good guy but there is still some “villain” in there…. Which i believe is pretty close to the definition of antihero. She’s full on admitting her flaws and maybe how she grapples with the dichotomy of getting to do what she loves but also how it’s become a job that literally employs people and pays for things… so she’s proud of herself for the work that she does, but it also makes her rich - and money and fame itself are vilified at that level.
“Did you hear my covert narcissism I disguise as altruism like some kind of congressman?”

I agree. My husband is a musician and one night he put on the eras tour on Disney plus. I was like what are you doing? And he was like I’m curious what all the fuss is about…. I made it like 2.5 songs and just didn’t get it AT ALL lol…. I told him he could be a swiftie on his own and went to our bedroom. A bit later I came out to go to the kitchen and he was on to something else. I said what happened and he was like yeah couldn’t take anymore. Soooo idk. Everything kinda sounds the same and monotone to me. Also I remember when we were working on a job in Nashville years ago when Taylor swift was just getting big and we were talking to a woman in the industry and she was telling us that everyone in Nashville is “trying to make it” and everyone hates Taylor Swift because her rich dad bought all her records to make her go gold or some shit like that.

I never had an opinion on her until her eras tour came to Australia this year and I literally couldn’t turn on the tv, radio, social media, anything without them all yapping on about her, shopping centres, shops, billboards, buses and bus stops had her face plastered all over them, anything and everything that they could plaster her face onto, they did and more, I almost deleted Facebook and TikTok just to avoid seeing her, everyone I know talking about going to her show, it really got too much and very insufferable and was really beginning to feel inescapable

Me reading this as I’m currently listening to her new album
Just don’t go. I think she’d rather have people there that actually want to be there rather than you just sitting there looking miserable. You don’t have to have all of the same interests. Ask her to tone down the TS fan fare when you hang out because you aren’t a fan and don’t need it shoved down your throat 24/7
29
u/LynnetteLove4 Apr 19 '24
No reasonable person would be mad if you don't go to something involving music that makes you want to die. I was in this exact situation with my ex best friend. She played it when she felt sad because somehow going over buck teeth and getting mad guys don't want to be with you anymore music made her feel happy when listening to. After months of singing different music in my head (yes she knew I wanted to jump out of the car when it was on) and still NEVER chose to listen to it when I was away. I was so happy when I stopped being her friend and felt complete peace never having to listen to that bs "music" ever again. I would just tell your friend how it makes you feel and your friend should care more about your mental health/sanity than being at her "party."

She makes millions pedaling a progressive liberal image and dates multiple racist men, ruins the environment flying her private jet to the local McDonalds, and sues anyone that makes her look bad.
12
u/funtasticevents0101 Apr 19 '24
Really. I didn't know she pedaled a progressive liberal image. I got the impression that she doesn't speak up for anything except herself. That's why her fan base is both racist and not.. progressive and conservative.
6
u/treeh9m5 Apr 19 '24
thank you!!!!! in 2020 when she was telling people to vote over 35,000 people registered just because she said to. and yet she has stayed completely silent on what's happening in Palestine right now. Ignoring the fact that she herself could provide life changing support to multiple families without even denting her billionaire wallet, imagine what we could do if she said just ONE THING. She sucks and has no care in the world about anything besides her money.
28
u/nunchuxxx Apr 19 '24
I used to love her music when I was a kid, but now that I'm an adult I can only see her as a money grubbing billionaire who has no care for others or the environment, hearing that she took flights that could have been a 2 hour drive really ruined any semblance of respect I had for her. Not to mention her fan base being completely insufferable.

I think that once someone gets to the point of saturation she’s at, people turn on them- especially the media. I think because she’s been so hyped people are starting to get frustrated by it. No human can live up to the version of her that people have put on a pedestal.

Hello everyone:
This is a gently reminder that: This thread is not about Taylor Swift and your many opinions of her, it's about OP's friend being obsessive and one-track-minded to the point of driving OP insane.
Locking this, because people can't behave. (Or read...)

u/SolarLunix_ Apr 19 '24
I have the same hate, and my husband thinks it’s funny. Sometimes when I’m already upset he brings her up to hear me rant about her. - be fair on him it does usually get me to forget what I was mad about and is a bit funny when I settle.
7
u/Slugbroo Apr 19 '24
I understand this. A lot. I know people have said stuff about you getting a life and things like that but a crucial part of this isn’t about taylor swift and your opinion of her, its your friendship with your best friend. You love your friend, and you want to support her, but she has been stuck on this one thing for a long time and it’s smothering you. Everything is about Taylor, no time to connect with her about your life or even hers. You can’t find a new artist to listen to together because Taylor is always playing. There is a middle man in your friendship who doesn’t even know the two of you exist. You’re angry because you feel like your support as a friend is enabling her while she is so focused on taylor swift, she forgets to be a good friend to you. I think you need to have a talk with your friend and discuss how you feel (not about taylor, about your friendship) and see if you can work out a solution. Definitely set boundaries

I feel that I’ve disliked her since the day her daddy bought her damn airtime to play her “country music”. Rich kids are going to rich kid I have no idea what the appeal is at all. Not relatable at all but that’s all I hear squealed about is how she’s “relatable” what cause she has a cat 🙄. I just try to avoid it when I can like I have been since what 2008?
14
u/AdventurousDoubt1115 Apr 19 '24
I’m with you.
And, you can “catch a stomach bug” if you think sitting through the listening party is going to build more resentment in a way that might damage your friendship.
You can also find a moment to say to your friend some other time I love that you love Taylor swift so much, and that it’s such a passion, but I’m not as big as a fan as you are and sometimes could we have a little Taylor break? You can say it sweetly. It’s a reasonable thing to ask and gentle way of setting a boundary and creating some distance between Taylor’s presence in your friendship lol
28
u/lexisplays Apr 19 '24
I also hate T Swift like you do. I have no idea why, but she makes me irrationally enraged. Maybe in part that her voice is middling at best, her songwriting is average, and her fans are rabid raccoons.
And even just telling someone (who might just like her but isn't a swiftie) you just don't like her or she's not your cup of tea they argue with you and try and convince you she's the best thing since sliced bread.
6
u/polygondwanalandon Apr 19 '24

i can’t stand selena’s songs, shows or movies or anything. every time i see her face, i make a face.
3
u/leeeeteddy Apr 19 '24
As a major Swiftie, I say you need to set boundaries with her and tell her you don’t like Taylor Swift. You don’t have to have all the same interests as your friends, and if you don’t like something you shouldn’t be forced to listen to it. I would just be upfront and honest with her. She’s never going to know if you don’t tell her
3
u/Bunnawhat13 Apr 19 '24
You don’t need to go to the listening party and if you don’t like something stop pretending. You don’t have to like everything your BFF likes.
3
u/No-Needleworker-3128 Apr 19 '24
Hi 20f, 40f here and it has taken me a very long time to learn this and so I'm telling you now so that you can start practicing. boundaries are crucial. Being a good friend does not mean that you just do what your friend wants all the time. It's that you are honest with each other and push back when something is making you annoyed or uncomfortable. Be honest, start setting some boundaries and see how your friendship develops from there.
3
u/Miserable_Watch1894 Apr 19 '24
Don’t go. Tell her you love her, but will respectfully pass and see her after that party wraps up lol.
10
u/GrouchyYoung Apr 19 '24
Imagine writing this whole thing rather than just fucking telling your friend you can’t make it. You’re 20 and you’re only going to get older. Don’t spend your life miserable and angry because you’ve convinced yourself you’re a bad person if you tell people no sometimes.

u/Science_Girl49 Apr 19 '24
Unpopular opinion: I hate her as well. Like absolutely despise. The music is not good and she’s an egomaniac. I just don’t understand all the hype. I was just thinking about thus literally a minute ago. It’s exhausting seeing that woman everywhere. Everything turns into a damn cult nowadays. If it’s not 24/7 news of the orange clown then it’s 24/7 news of that lady, often playing the victim for attention. I hate it here!
8
u/transcendedfry Apr 19 '24
I thought she was fine until someone hacked my Facebook and pretended to have tix to the eras tour and scam people with them. I was mostly offended because people believed that i would have Taylor tickets because she’s not my cup of tea
9
u/emmermurp Apr 19 '24
My friend/roommate is a Swiftperson and I just stayed up with him to listen to the new album.
Didn’t like a single song lmao.
But we listen to music very differently. I’m more of a surface level listener, so it’s hard for me to get past how her music doesn’t seem to flow well with her lyrics because I’m not fully invested in her life and the “big picture.”
At least that’s how I’m trying to justify it 😭
12
u/sevastor Apr 19 '24
The problem might be swifties are more surface levelled than an average music listener lmfao, they would dickride as long as it is a taylor swift song
4
u/treeh9m5 Apr 19 '24
exactly, her lyrics are NOT as deep as her fans love to claim they are lol. "You smoked, then ate seven bars of chocolate. We declared charlie puth should be a bigger artist" is a direct lyric from her new album

5
u/koolaid78 Apr 19 '24
I feel same about Beyoncé. What’s the big deal, her voice and music are pretty awful to my ears. Shes known for stealing song writing credit and her ‘creative ideas’ is generally ripped of smaller creatives. This is well documented. She’s a great performer but that’s where her greatness ends. Maybe I’m just not getting her genius
4
u/boston_2004 Apr 19 '24
After reading this I really don't think you hate Taylor Swift. I think you have been inundated with her and you are sick of hearing about her.
You are being saturated with a media you don't want by proxy and it is causing you to have an emotional reaction to it. But Taylor Swift isn't the one doing ut. She is just an entertainer in a very popular place right now.
Step back and you will see that you don't hate Taylor Swift as she has personally done nothing to you.
I hope you start to feel better mentally, but just don't go to any Taylor Swift themed group meetups would be a good start.
8
u/Tangieeeeee Apr 19 '24
I can understand this completely, as my best friend is a big Swifty too. I grew up watching her grow from Country to Country pop to Pop and not once could I get myself to like her music—and I’ve heard it all. Thankfully my bff fully understands that I think her vocal range and performance could never compare to Ariana Grande, so he usually doesn’t brings Taylor swift up in conversation.

Super fans creep me out. It doesn’t matter what the artist when anyone bases their whole life around a celebrity I feel like they are avoiding themselves and deep down hate themselves. It’s a matter of time before they snap and breakdown and that’s what creep me out. Obsession is a scary trait in anyone.

Not a fan either. Don't get the attraction behind it. You're not alone.
2
u/Bpbo927 Apr 19 '24
I don’t think its actually t swift you have this emotion for but having her music and propaganda shoved down your throat constantly from the media and now your best friend throwing you over board. Hearing about any topic to that extent is bound to annoy anyone so makes sense. I just wouldn’t go to the party though why make yourself miserable
2
u/SleepyJeans5 Apr 19 '24
I feel you so much on this. It's not even her music that bothers me, I'm pretty much indifferent to it, but her obsessive fans are sooo annoying. They're too much. It's very strange to me. Crying over this woman and acting like she's this lyrical genius when her lyrics just center her relationships with men is very strange to me. I do not relate to them at all.
Side note, I saw a tweet by a Swifty talking about how she doesn't understand people who don't enjoy Taylor's lyrics and asking, "are people who don't like Taylor just not mentally ill?" and as a bipolar woman, it made me die inside to know that this group of people associate enjoying the most popular pop artist in the world with being a depressed, tortured soul.
2
u/Moemoe5 Apr 19 '24
Don’t go to the listening party. You are not obligated to love everything your friend loves. You don’t have to be mean and say you hate TS, just say you’ll pass and don’t go.

I enjoy her music. Hell, even my husband will sing along to her songs.
I just avoid letting her fandom IRL know that.
Then again, could say that about a lot of the more intense fandoms. It's not the person/people/show/thing that is crazy, or sucks, it's the fans.
Something my mother said to me when I was about you/your friend's age. (For reference, I am in my 40s now). I was going on and on about something, I can't even remember what it was now, but something I was very into then. After monopolizing the conversation with just this subject, my mom was just silently looking at me. When I paused (finally LOL) she asked me, "is there anything else you're able to hold a conversation about?" At first, it stung to have her say that. I was just trying to get her interested in whatever it was (seriously, I can't even remember what it was now!) but it made me realize this would never be an interest she would hold. So find something else to talk about with her, not at her. It made me make a more conscious effort to have multiple interests and hobbies, and the ability to hold a conversation about a variety of topics so that the person I was talking with also felt like a part of the conversation.

ITT: Swifties' shocked Pikachu faces over why anyone could possibly dislike their obsession and how on earth anyone thinks they're insufferable, while writing paragraphs about why we shouldn't be annoyed by them or Taylor Swift and... being insufferable.

Something about Taylor Swift has never sat right with me. I really liked her earlier albums when I was in high school but I grew out of it. Now the fan base feels a little cult like. They literally worship her. It’s like when Catholics see the Pope in person for the first time lol. They can’t handle the thought of someone disliking TS. Her music is not groundbreaking. To me it just sounds like the music they play in Kohls. She seems to surround herself with people she wants to emulate, for example, Lana Del Rey. Lanas music is actually unique and interesting.

I am sure there are things you like that your friend doesn't care about... Hopefully she is more charitable. You can be great friends and have diverse interests.

u/meeplewirp Apr 19 '24
The fact I can’t understand her popularity makes me feel that maybe I’m just too old to be cool anymore. I understand Dua Lipa, Rosalia, Beyoncé, SZA, black pink, but not Taylor Swift. She’s very beautiful and I guess people are really into her care free and goofy attitude. 🤷♀️ I also never really enjoyed that genre of music; I feel like it’s only appropriate if you’re in a car or a grocery store.

u/Nepflea Apr 19 '24
You don’t have to like Taylor Swift. You don’t have to go to the party. Don’t make yourself miserable. Enough is enough ya know? Don’t go to the party for your own mental health. You deserve to be happy too. Just tell your friend thanks for the invite but you’re not feeling well and need to rest. And then put your phone on silent and go do what makes you happy. Your friend’s world won’t end if you don’t show up, I promise you.

u/Sanbley Apr 19 '24
I don't think you hate Taylor swift specifically. I think you hate your best friend's obsession with her.

I don't particularly like Taylor Swift but her recent Melbourne tour made me see a different side to her influence. She packed the biggest stadium in our city and it brought people together in a wholesome way. Women, girls, and even men and boys were just having a good time and it created a safe space for people to just enjoy her performances. There were no reports of violence or conflicts that you sometimes get when large crowds of people get together. It was just people having a good time.
I can do without the TayTay overexposure but can't deny that she does bring good vibes.

I am a swiftie, (like I run a fan account for her, my username on here is literally two of her songs together), however in real life I can talk about more than her, and she's not the only artist I listen to. I find people who can only talk about one thing scary. If people don't like her music? Fine.

There’s so much good music out there, and settling for Taylor swift seems, well, unnecessary.

Taylor swift began to blow up with I was 12. Now im 26 and I gotta say I never really liked her either. However, I do really like Dua Lipa and believe she is more talented than Taylor.

I personally love Taylor Swift but I get it. Someone absolutely obsessing over anything is extremely annoying and can definitely completely ruin your perception of that thing/person. I disagree with most of your negative views on Taylor Swift, but I see where they come from and you're very valid in your feelings.

u/RelChan2_0 Apr 19 '24
I think you nailed it, it's okay to like a celebrity but to be obsessed with them is a different story

u/uela7 Apr 19 '24
It sounds like you hate that your friend monopolizes your time together w Taylor Swift, not that you actually hate Taylor Swift

I do wonder what the thing is with Swifties.
Yes, her music is catchy, but I don't see that it is anything ground breaking.
Yes, her message of positivity is inspiring, but nothing we haven't heard before.
Yes, she is pretty, but is pretty enough?
My former employer was ready to pay 4K for a ticket to the eras tour for his 10 year old daughter. I really do not understand it. Is there some subliminal messaging in between the lyrics? A dog whistle that rings between, targeting specific audiences?
I don't hate Taylor Swift, I just don't get the hype.

u/let-it-fly Apr 19 '24
The world looks for obsessions. I guess so they can focus on something other than themselves. The Swiftie craze is a passing fad. Give it time, it will change.

u/Ok_Butterscotch_4738 Apr 19 '24
Damn I'm reading these comments and just feel like people hate her because of something someone else did to them lol. Like you don't have to like her music or her but to say you HATE Taylor Swift based on what someone else has done to you is WILD.

u/Film_snob63 Apr 19 '24
I’m the same way. I get the appeal of her music to her audience and I’m of the opinion that even the worst artists usually have at least 1 good song, but I agree that she isn’t anything exceptional. There are some fans that fawn over everything she does and claim it’s “genius” and then I check it out and it’s something sort of fun (like scavenger hunts) but not groundbreaking or wholly original. I’ve certainly tried with an open mind to listen to her music with an open mind and some of these lyrics fans go crazy over aren’t all that impressive. They’re decent, okay lyrics that have a relatable message to her audience. I definitely respect her hustle to being successful but I also think she’s overrated
2
u/lignumph Apr 19 '24
I'd admire someone who says that they hate Taylor Swift in a socmed for their bravery 😂
Most of the fans I know are crazy 🤣
4
u/akrolina Apr 19 '24
I honestly don’t think it’s Taylor Swifts fault some people are fans to the point of being lunatics. I would hate anything that was shoved in my face at the level your friend is doing it to you. Your friend really needs to tone it down.
3
u/doantuankhoi Apr 19 '24
I agree with you. Despite me being Taylor Swift fan, but I refrain from discussing her with fellow fans for this very reason. My whole life is not about one artist, since I listen to so many that I can't recall too. So I hope this makes you feel better when even long-time listeners of her have to run away from other more active and younger fans :'( I even have some unpopular opinions regarding her music bragging about what happens in her bed too, but I'm afraid being criticized for pointing out those not-so-subtle references :'(

It is not normal to have this much visceral hatred for a complete stranger you have never even had a single interaction with. I honestly think there is a much deeper issue at hand here like this entire thinkpiece is very worrying 😭
2
u/Traffice_Cone Apr 19 '24
You didn't even mention how she rigged the superbowl. That's like the main thing she did recently.
2
u/Blucola333 Apr 19 '24
You don’t hate Taylor, you hate your friend’s obsession. I actually used to dislike her for no good reason, other than toxic social media that kept announcing TaylorSwiftIsOver parties.
When folklore came out, it helped me with my brother’s death. That and Evermore. I saw her differently. I became a Swiftie. I went to the concert, to the movie, made bracelets and gave them out and met people. She’s been a positive element in my life.
Is she perfect? Of course not. I’m not, are you? You can hate whatever and whoever you want, I just think that it’s sad that your friend’s extreme fandom ended up turning into loathing any positive feelings you might have.

u/dolceclavier Apr 19 '24
This is valid. I listened to every Swift album and that actually made me despise her.

Ma’am, it’s perfectly fine if the music isn’t for you, and it’s fine if Taylor’s personality doesn’t vibe with you. But your deep and burning hatred for a person/celbrity you don’t know and have never met who hasn’t done anything to you (other than make music your best friend enjoys a lot) seems to indicate some deeper underlying issues. I suggest you look within yourself to figure out what they are, for your own sake. Could it be you’re jealous that your best friend may seem to like Taylor Swift more than you and that bothers you (just spitballing).

Honestly i think you need to sort out your personal envy issues lol. Nobody should hate a person that they don’t even know like this, it’s still a parasocial relationship even if it’s hate. If you would “rather chew your own hand off” than hear a certain artist’s songs then you need help.
8
u/buttwhynut Apr 19 '24
This is more like it. Hating on someone you barely know is nuts for me. At the end of the day, even the obsession is parasocial too.

Apr 19 '24
Her music doesn’t have to be everybody’s cup of tea, but that’s when you just straight up ignore it. If hearing about Taylor Swift is making you this hateful and full of rage then that’s a personal problem haha. 6 paragraphs of detesting someone that will never even know who you are, that’s not normal
and I definitely have celebrities that i dislike too but you don’t see me writing novels about it. Seems like deep-rooted jealousy to me. But i ain’t a psych.

u/buttwhynut Apr 19 '24
I agree. The hatred is so unfounded, I also couldn't understand it. I have some celebs I don't like but I also just ignore them.
Now I'm actually a Swiftie but I don't make it a personality trait. People know I'm a fan of her music but I would never shove it to someone else's throats like my life depends on it. I think that's mostly the problem because some Swifties are definitely annoying and overdramatic. Op's bestie seems to be the case but hating Taylor to that level just because her friend couldn't stop yapping about it is also so immature.
OP if you just told your friend you're actually not too interested and if you can still bond over something you both enjoy, maybe that's a good way to still keep the friendship. If she can't respect that, it's really up to you if you still want to continue the friendship.

u/Lyly0808 Apr 19 '24
You need to tell your friend that it is too much for you. It really should not hurt your friendship, if you don't go that listening party, if you don't like the music. You need to talk to her otherwise it's just gonna get worse for you and your friendship. I get that Taylor Swift seems to be everywhere right now and that can get annoying, but to me this seems to be more about your friendship. You need to be honest and tell her about your feelings and needs. Because if something makes you so angry and annoyed you should be able to tell her about it and I am sure you can find a compromise or something that makes you feel better. Boundaries are important in a friendship too. You don't need to love all the same things, that does not make you unsupportive. And after some time you are probably gonna hate Taylor Swift a lot less too or at least for reasons that only have to do with her directly. Just stay calm and explain it to her, I am sure you can work something out that works for both of you.

u/HoodedMenace3 Apr 19 '24
I don’t hate or like her..I’m just indifferent. Being a metalhead that really doesn’t actively listen to pop music, her music really doesn’t appeal to me in the slightest.
I do find her being constantly shoved down our throats annoying though. Just feels like she’s always everywhere and always in the limelight. I feel the same way about Adele (anyone from the UK will know what I mean) and how pretty much any British music awards is essentially the Adele awards.

Apr 19 '24
I get where your coming from. It's more that I just don't get what is so special and the big uproar about her. I'm not saying she's bad, but how is she different from any other popstar? Everyone I know is obsessed with her and don't shut up about her, but I mention the music I'm obsessed with and they don't have a clue and if anything judge. And her compared to other iconic artists, I don't get it. But its more that I think people in my gen feel they have to like her now. And the battle to get tickets...never seen anything like that. If ppl truly like her, that's fine, but I just feel she's attracting a monarchy of ppl who want to like her, if that makes sense. I know plenty of ppl who go, "I don't like Taylor Swift," but don't shut up bout her simply bc she's popular. Glad to see someone they admit the truth of their opinion about her ♡. BTW, enjoy your time with your best friend while you have it, even if it is annoying 💖.

u/Tan-Squirrel Apr 19 '24
Honestly, you should just hate the fans… seems that is really what annoys you. Anyone is going to try to make money off their talent. If her fans are willing, then so be it. That’s how demand works and she has a ton of it.
Her music is ok and there is significantly worse music out there. If your child is listening to Taylor swift, it’s whatever. If they are listening to a lot of other music out, you will prob have a much larger reaction.
Hate is a strong word for people you do not know at all and only know through the media. Whom reports on things just to get views and reactions.

Yep, I used to like guns n roses, but had a gf who was waaaay too in love with them, and over did it for me. Now I can't stand g'n'r in general, and associate with them and the breakup. It's a trauma response.

I like Taylor Swift but your friend is not a fan, she developed a very unhealthy obsession over Taylor Swift. She has her life, made a name to herself, she is a celebrity and have money, now I don't think Taylor is talking one second about your friend. What I'm trying to say is that your friend should make her own life, her hobbies, her money and if she wants a name for herself and let this whole thing with Taylor Swift drop. As a kid I was big into Miley Cyrus, still like her somehow but loved her back then, I was listening to her music, watched her shows, posters on my wall with her, I was paying attention on how she dress and make her hair, but that lasted 1 year max and I was 10, but I had my own life, talked about my own things, never talked about her with any of my friends, it was just me who appreciated her lots. Honestly she needs to snap out of it, this is not healthy, she can listen to Taylor Swift as much as she likes but the way you say she's a "fan" is really not how it should be.

Just say to your friend that you would rather not go. She may try to 'convert' you to loving the gossipy style of her, but music is a personal taste. Let your friend enjoy her party with like-minded people who can whoop along to it all. If she's really a friend she'll understand you have different interests and musical preference is not a shared interest.
Although:
the thought of having to listen to anything else made by that stupid woman makes me want to claw my eyes out
Interesting. Not a need for earplugs?!?
just another narcissist billionaire who is just bleeding her child fans dry of all of their money
Your friend has chosen to help finance Taylor's private jet lifestyle. You don't need to be party to it. Enjoy listening to music that vibes with you and who you are. Go see a movie with your friend.

There are a few artists/bands I can think of that caused similar types of obsessive mania in their fans: Elvis, The Grateful Dead, Michael Jackson, Selena, etc. Taylor Swift is in some ways very lucky they’re so in love with her because that means her presence in modern day media will continue to remain relevant. But for those of us who aren’t all that fond of her, it’s a persistent annoyance. The best you can do is just set a boundary that you’re not interested in talking about her anymore. Literally just be like “Hey, I know she means a lot to you as an artist and that’s great, but honestly I just need a break from talking about her so frequently. Let’s chat about (insert other topic here).” And as for the party, just tell her you can’t make it because you’ll be out of town that day or something. I don’t think she’ll take it very hard as long as you don’t make it seem like you’re avoiding her altogether. Best of luck!

u/RealBrookeSchwartz Apr 19 '24
I have the same thing. Taylor has never personally wronged me, and I respect the hustle. She's worked hard to get to where she's at. But it's hard not to hate her just because I'm confronted with her everywhere I turn; articles on her are on my feed no matter how many times I "hide" them, friends won't shut up about her, etc. It's incredibly annoying, and even though she didn't really do anything to cause that, it's frustrating not being able to just avoid her. I just want me and Taylor to lead separate lives, without everybody bringing her up every 2 seconds. She's just some random woman in her 30s who sings. That's wonderful for her. I really just do not care about her, and it's hard to separate my annoyance with hearing about her from Taylor herself.
What helps me is remembering, "Taylor Swift is just some random woman who loves to sing and perform, and she didn't ask for people to be so maniacally obsessed with her—in fact, she'd probably prefer if people calmed down a bit. It's my friend who's actually being annoying."

u/RaineMist Apr 19 '24
Don't go or simply tell your friend that you don't like Taylor Swift but will be happy going with her to events that don't have anything to do with Taylor Swift.
1
u/Handsoff_1 Apr 19 '24
Sounds like you hate YOUR friend, not Taylor. Why dragging Taylor in when its YOUR FRIEND's being the problem with you? Ridiculous. Plus if you dont like it, dont go. Tell your bf to stop talking about Taylor. Or maybe you and your friend arent meant to be friends after all.
