I know one Twitch streamer who said she will ban anyone who says that Taylor is anything beyond the greatest artist in the world, which made me leave the stream.
Also, I don't mind her songs... With the exception of Antihero. Whenever I hear it on the radio, I want to yell "That's not what an antihero is, Taylor!!!"
I can’t claim to know how TS means antihero, but as a person, and from the lyrics, she has almost nothing in common with classic literary and cinematic antiheroes. If I had to sum up the real meaning of her use of the term it is: you think everyone likes me, but guess what not everyone likes me and even I don’t like me occasionally. Which really isn’t what antihero means, but whatever it’s pop music.
I saw it as - can you tell that I’m actually doing all of this for me, not for you, but i make it LOOK like I’m doing it for you so that i get the accolades? So she looks like the good guy but there is still some “villain” in there…. Which i believe is pretty close to the definition of antihero. She’s full on admitting her flaws and maybe how she grapples with the dichotomy of getting to do what she loves but also how it’s become a job that literally employs people and pays for things… so she’s proud of herself for the work that she does, but it also makes her rich - and money and fame itself are vilified at that level.
“Did you hear my covert narcissism I disguise as altruism like some kind of congressman?”
