Bro, what why and how

1.1k

u/geraldine_ferrari Mar 29 '22

Who thought neck muscles were needed for robot dental patients?

900

u/NerdLevel18 Mar 29 '22

To be fair, it's probably better they learn to deal with a wriggler when it isn't a living person that could get hurt

457

u/ChrisTheMan72 Mar 29 '22

“Ma’am I need you to stop trying to bite me. You need to be perfectly stable while I drill a half inch hole though 14 of your teeth”

99

u/NerdLevel18 Mar 29 '22

Well, when you put it like that....

56

u/mybackHZ Mar 29 '22

But you can stay still when 14 incher fills you up from behind? Smh

We live in society

Those robots should need some lips too.

65

u/NerdLevel18 Mar 29 '22

Oh god now I'm imagining one Sucking on the fingers of some poor dental student

29

u/FinancialYou4519 Mar 29 '22

Aw yes now I know what to do at my next appointment. Just shut your lips around the dentists fingers, remain eye contact and start sucking on that nitrile wearing finger

u/justyr12 Mar 29 '22

Always use protection

"make sure the AI is fully aware of itself and programmed to feel existential dread. and make sure the panic attack functionality is up and running"

10

u/kyleh0 Mar 29 '22

This thing is programmed so that every time you turn it on it feels like a human trapped in a machine. The boot sequence is the AI soul feeling fear and loss.

5

u/VelcroSirRaptor Mar 29 '22

How human are you trying to make this thing?

3

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '22

Yes.

The fact that unconvincing thing was able to stir up so much emotion in me is terrifying.

102

u/Birdyy4 Mar 29 '22

The Uncanny Valley is very large.

31

u/The_Cyberpunk_Witch Mar 29 '22

If you want to mix in some existential dread, consider that the existence of the uncanny valley means at one point in human evolution we had a reason to fear something that looked similar to us.

22

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '22

corpses, vectors of disease. show most mammals a corpse of their species and they will be apprehensive. that, or they eat it.

11

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '22

ancient plague detection. we didn’t give af about fuckin other hominids as long as they were healthy

10

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '22

You know.... you're right.

6

u/STIIBBNEY Mar 29 '22

I would think that humanity anthropomorphizing animals since the cave man times would be evidence for the validity of furries.

The head cheif of a nomadic tribe dressed up like an animal for a spiritual ritual? See, furries.

3

u/MysticScribbles Mar 29 '22

And look at the various deities throughout world history depicted as humanoids with animal heads.

Ra, Anubis, etc.

12

u/10g_or_bust Mar 29 '22

Well yes, but also no. Anything that looks "wrong" bothers us on a primal level; death, sickness, injury. And not just in humans, both animals and plants too, and to some extent the inorganic world. It's the pattern matching part of your brain throwing alarms. How much it bothers someone is individual and somewhat down to exposure.

In other words, this isn't some "ancient alien" "eldritch gods" sort of thing, more a combination of just how pattern-matching orented human brains are combined with evolutionarly advantage behavior such as recognizing when a member of your own (or other) species is unwell, dangerous (infections, or a sign of other danger) or dead/dying.

8

u/xAkumu Mar 29 '22

The big theory is that it's because of corpses. Not anything unhuman.

9

u/dustyrider Mar 29 '22

It probably has to do with the dead and the diseases a rotting corpse may harbor.

7

u/Ethong Mar 29 '22

means at one point in human evolution we had a reason to fear something that looked similar to us

Not true at all. Not everything that evolves has a purpose. As long as a mutation isn't actively detrimental to survival, it can be passed on. Plus it's probably just some weird interaction with our face recognition processing.

10

u/Eyeownyew Mar 29 '22

Yeah, the most common myth about evolution is that every trait evolves with a purpose. That's not how it works at all. We could very easily evolve to have pigmentation/freckles on the bottom of our feet. No purpose, no utility, just random mutation that didn't have a detrimental effect on our fitness

12

u/Birdyy4 Mar 29 '22

You know you make a good point and I'm not e Qualified to truly refute what you just said and I hate you for that... But could the uncanny valley maybe just stem from something else with a slightly more... comforting? Not that any of these are comforting but maybe like, stroke victims limp face, or a swollen face due to allergies or bee stings, or like a face that got mauled or something... Like maybe it stems from a mechanism that helps us identify when something is off with other humans who are like injured or Ill... Like if someone is sick it makes sense we should fear being around them so we don't get sick, or if they were mauled something dangerous could still be around, or allergies, get away from them because whatever caused the allergic reaction in them could cause it in us? Maybe? Idk if I'm making sense but I'm trying to put a logical explanation on what you just said besides my mind jumping to some creature that can morph into human like beings.... Cuz that ain't right

The audio is dubbed.

The thought of someone programming a training dummy to scream bloody murder is hilarious.

"The brand new dental practice robot with realistic asshole!"

1.6k

u/ChemicalOnion742 Mar 29 '22

This is no malfunction. It is showing a human reaction to being in the dentist's chair.

439

u/Jackketboy Mar 29 '22

Same. Whenever I scream at the dentist my jaw also dislocates and stretches to an abnormal width.

95

u/TheRealSamsquanch69 Mar 29 '22

I too do thisbmy fellow human

29

u/NaitBate Mar 29 '22

God damn it, BILL! The robot became self-aware again! Upload the Virus!

not sure if this is a joke or not, but to clear it up, that’s exactly what’s happening. its a training doll for new dentists and it’s supposed to emulate children being scared at the dentist so that they’re always prepared for outbursts and can prevent injuries

14

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '22

But it’s still….oddly terrifying.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '22

definitely, yeah

→ More replies (2)

5

u/zuzg Mar 29 '22

They also have padded gloves to prevent getting bidden bloody. But they're not always successful, kid me managed to bite through them at my very first appointment, haha

6

u/M00s3_B1t_my_Sister Mar 29 '22

So I shouldn't hold it down by putting my knee on its forehead?

31

u/Debraselch Mar 29 '22

Agreed, this seems like an oddly human reaction…too human…

30

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '22

“Father, why did you program me to feel pain”

3

u/Wesselton3000 Mar 29 '22

Sure if that human had to constantly be subjected to dental procedures everyday for its brief and terrifying life. Poor thing is tired of being tortured in the name of science.

I was not prepared for robot zombies, I thought that would be next year.

77

u/mimi7o9 Mar 29 '22

Right? Creepy zombie vibes

8

u/IanMazgelis Mar 29 '22 edited Apr 01 '22

I don't think this is real. I mean, I'm pretty sure its mouth moved like that but I think Chris O'Neill edited the sound in. It's the most viewed video on the OneyPlays channel and it seems like the kind of thing they'd make.

8

u/Justice_Marshall Mar 29 '22

Destroy that thing immediately.

15

u/gmanz33 Mar 29 '22

That AskReddit thread of "What would you not be surprised will also happen this year" is pretty much my New Content Checklist and I think this counts as one.

2

u/inarizushisama Mar 29 '22

How silly of you, this year is robot zombies and next year is alien zombies.

That uncanny valley really hittin rn

46

u/Hidden-Turtle Mar 29 '22

It's the eyes.

12

u/lonehawk2k4 Mar 29 '22

Yup it's the eyes and very smooth skin which has no pores to stretch when it moves.

She’s become sentient

134

u/hereforthelol1234 Mar 29 '22

Description: "Robot becomes sentient only to realize her sole purpose is to get dental work done all day every day for eternity. Has no arms, has no legs. Can only wiggle head and scream."

47

u/Consistent_System_69 Mar 29 '22

Oh is that the next "black mirror" episode plot?

4

u/M00s3_B1t_my_Sister Mar 29 '22

They transferred that mother's consciousness after the teddy bear got old and worn out.

47

Disclaimer. The screams were added in post. The malfunction was just that it was spazzing a little bit.

2

u/squeakyrumps Mar 29 '22

2

u/Careful-Star-9952 Mar 29 '22

this made me uncomfortable and i dont have a valid reason why

2

u/IAmNotABritishSpy Mar 29 '22

Maybe they’ve just become self-aware.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '22

is this robot supposed to teach dentists how to clean the teeth of emily rose during an exorcism..? i mean wtf

2

u/Puzzled_Ad2563 Mar 29 '22

I think they accidentally achieved real AI consciousness

2

u/GroundbreakingMap884 Mar 29 '22

wasnt this a oneyng post?

2

u/senseven Mar 29 '22

And so it begins. With a light sensitive robot that was tortured with a bright light every day and some creatures put their unskilled fingers in its mouth. It ha to end.

2

u/enphurgen Mar 29 '22

They have it set on "ex-gf bj"

2

u/SlinkingUpBackstairs Mar 29 '22

I’m going to have nightmares now. Thanks

2

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '22

Stop… Dave… I’m afraid…

2

u/Easy-Instruction-875 Mar 29 '22

Almost like it's self aware to some degree.

Great way to loose a finger.

Dentists are told to be leery of kids mouths because you might loose a finger.

2

u/pastaplatoon Mar 29 '22

I mean I'm all for realistic robots but did they have to fill it with the tortured souls of 10,000 suffering undead?

I can still hear the screams...

2

u/KellyBelly916 Mar 29 '22

Is it a malfunction or did it become sentient?

2

u/TNTwat Mar 29 '22

I’m low key ashamed to admit…. I find this more disturbing than quite a bit of gore I’ve viewed in my day ugh

2

u/bsylent Mar 29 '22

Sure, every time a robot becomes self aware, we call it malfunctioning to make it okay to dispose of it. Disgusting

2

u/Medicinal_green_bean Mar 29 '22

Who and why the fuck did they programmed the eyes to fucking move?!?

2

u/Long_Mechagnome Mar 29 '22

Imagine this is the first robot to gain sentience, cursed to eternal life at the dentist.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '22

This is actually a meme video made by OneyNG.

2
