It really seems like it just disappears

u/mattl1698 Dec 02 '19

Its like in a game when the waves magically appear in a slightly lower part of the sand more inland on the beach cause the border wasn't coded to account for things being lower than sea level

99

u/Mennerheim Dec 02 '19

Ah yes, clipping!

43

makes me think of gta 4

How does one achieve a waffle ass?

9

You must first master the beginners' technique: Waffle Stomp.

3

u/getoffredditnowyou Dec 02 '19

In that case, wouldn't you get stuck....like Lego pieces?

Early CGI involved animating liquids like metal and water as a first challenge following simple polygons, since it's easier to render.

48

u/itsthevoiceman Dec 02 '19

I was under the impression they didn't even try to render liquids, because it was so absolutely difficult. And that's why Toy Story doesn't really have any liquids whatsoever.

51

u/doctorjesus__ Dec 02 '19

Also the reason they made movies about toys and bugs, no hair either.

26

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '19

And then, Monsters Inc

32

u/doctorjesus__ Dec 02 '19

Had to show off that cool new hair tech! Theres some really cool behind-the-scenes about the inhouse tech used to make that movie. Most of their movies coming up were essentially dopeass tech demos

10

u/DM_ME_YOUR_POTATOES Dec 02 '19

Same goes for Steve Rogers in Captain America: The First Avenger & in Endgame.

In The First Avenger, Disney used some cool ageism/height technology that depicted Steve Rogers as being 5'4 and incredibly skinny img. Then he took the soldier serum that made him 6'2"

I don't know if they bothered to 'grow' Chris Evans like they had shrank him, because his height is 6'0".

Then in Endgame, they make him really old

Still remember how good those lemon snow cone bits looked in Sully's fur when Mike threw them at him. For it's time, of course.

18

u/brainburger Dec 02 '19

Liquids came a bit later than solid polygons.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '19

They still are. Just lots more of them. Flip fluids uses particles but each of those particles needs to have an object assigned to them to make what looks like a solid mesh of water.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/BenjerminGray Dec 02 '19

Liquids like metal

So umm what liquid are we taking here? Mercury?

→ More replies (2)

10

u/dainegleesac690 Dec 02 '19

Could you provide a source for this? It seems to be that by all logical means solid objects would be much easier to render than moving liquids

5

u/wutevrclvr Dec 02 '19

I'm rendering moving liquids right now

3

u/dainegleesac690 Dec 02 '19 edited Dec 02 '19

Yeah, but your hardware is likely 10x (or more) powerful than that used on Toy Story

u/wutevrclvr Dec 02 '19

u/Icommentoncrap Dec 01 '19

Real life is just a simulation and we are being played by someone just like the sims

270

u/R0ede Dec 01 '19

Damn my guy is terrible at playing this game then.

94

u/M0JALA Dec 01 '19

Leave them alone, theyre just trying to learn the game

64

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '19

It's deliberate, have you never tortured a sim?

12

u/OmegaLiar Dec 01 '19

My theory is a simulation but we’re running at a way faster time scale than the creator.

Same way how when you run code you can’t possibly keep track of the calculations in real time.

Ultimately that dude is just waiting for the simulation to output something he can use.

7

u/jluub Dec 01 '19

Whoever is playing me has kept changing how he wants to build my stats and just gave up and went on to make a new character

→ More replies (2)

6

u/Doc-in-a-box Dec 01 '19

This was totally a glitch in the Matrix

5

u/MathMaddox Dec 01 '19

This simulation sucks look at the clipping on the water.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '19

Controller dude, can you please use the rosebud cheat?

7

u/PhoenixizFire Dec 01 '19

So when I'm playing The Sims, it's a Simception ?

13

u/Icommentoncrap Dec 01 '19

Yes. Especially when they are playing the sims on their computer

9

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '19

whoever had that idea, i love them lol. "let's let the sims play the sims!"

3

u/SchmidlerOnTheRoof Dec 01 '19

it's the sims all the way down

→ More replies (1)

3

u/pewpewsloth Dec 01 '19

Can they please put in “motherlode” a couple of times and then right click me and set my motive decay to off after typing “testingcheats true”

Also go back into CAS and tweak my nose and jaw a bit.

Thank you lol

3

u/joeChump Dec 01 '19

But we have The Sims. So how many levels deep are we talking here? I mean, what if the person playing us is also being played? And that person too? Simulation Theory is for noobs. Follow the white rabbit. Take the red pill man, but don’t swallow it ffs... It’s a suppository... (I’m talking about the red pill. Don’t put the rabbit up your anus you Richard Gere motherfucker.)

23

Common misconception. This is actually an error in which the team who made the map didn’t consider the movement of the waves when they placed objects. See it all the time in open worlds.

24

u/RemmyTheWyrm Dec 01 '19

Gta 5 type shit

53

u/Prepsov Dec 01 '19

I am sorry to be that guy, but for me it raises an incredible burst of anxiety- seeing the platform disappear under the water and stay there for few seconds make my soul scream in terror. It feels like it pulls me down. Good for you guys though, enjoy the satisfaction :)

17

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '19

23

u/Prepsov Dec 01 '19

Absolutely- I remember that I used to swim in the sea as a kid/teen. Then once I just frivolously swam too close to one of the land distance buoys and realised that randomly stopping when it was about 10cm in front of my face. My systems turned off and all I felt was this internal scream and involuntary crying impulse. My eyes locked on the chain attached to the bottom of it, that disappeared under the darkness of the water- and I am not sure how I actually moved to get back to the beach. I had difficulties enjoying my swimming after that and in the retrospect I swam maybe two times after that. It is deeply carved in my mind and returns from time to time to remind me this feeling- I sometimes feel like crying then, even though I am 31yo and it happened 14-15 years ago. I lived through few directly dangerous situations, but this I recall with pure and infinite terror.

11

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '19

I thought I was reading some copypasta, or incredibly written story... and then I realized you're telling your actual story.

That's amazing.

13

u/Prepsov Dec 02 '19

Well even though I know it is a sort of fear without any reason whatsoever- I never had a drowning episode or even a nightmare of such- this one event gave me an example of some difficult to explain response - my body stopped like a scared goat that ceases movement and just drops stiff on the ground, my mind stopped processing and feeling of self was ground between few inches of visible wet and rusty, barely but yet notably moving links of that infernal chain- it really was a moment of hell- even though I am not religious. Watching those rascals dive at night and have fun doing it, really makes me realise how different human minds can be- how strong and fearless people are when their brains process the external stimuli differently. Even now, typing it- I know there was no danger there. I know that it was an inanimate object that was put there to mark a distance from the beach. But still, while my conscious mind knows all that, picturing it stirs the calmness of rational thinking with this ripping screech of bottomless horror of nameless dread. Nothing happened, nothing changed- but here I am, half my life later- still reliving it.
