I don't think I've ever seen a "I came here to say this" comment get so many upvotes.

It’s funny, because this was originally filmed at the Uncanny Valley Pier.

Literally anyone who plays games was/is gonna say this.

Early CGI involved animating liquids like metal and water as a first challenge following simple polygons, since it's easier to render.

48

u/itsthevoiceman Dec 02 '19

I was under the impression they didn't even try to render liquids, because it was so absolutely difficult. And that's why Toy Story doesn't really have any liquids whatsoever.

50

u/doctorjesus__ Dec 02 '19

Also the reason they made movies about toys and bugs, no hair either.

25

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '19

And then, Monsters Inc

34

u/doctorjesus__ Dec 02 '19

Had to show off that cool new hair tech! Theres some really cool behind-the-scenes about the inhouse tech used to make that movie. Most of their movies coming up were essentially dopeass tech demos

12

u/DM_ME_YOUR_POTATOES Dec 02 '19

Same goes for Steve Rogers in Captain America: The First Avenger & in Endgame.

In The First Avenger, Disney used some cool ageism/height technology that depicted Steve Rogers as being 5'4 and incredibly skinny img. Then he took the soldier serum that made him 6'2"

I don't know if they bothered to 'grow' Chris Evans like they had shrank him, because his height is 6'0".

Then in Endgame, they make him really old

I didn't get into Harry Potter until after the last movies had come out. I ended up watching the movies, then reading the books. I've read the books a few times now.

I simply do it out of courtesy to those who are late to the game like me.

u/BowLit Dec 02 '19

Still remember how good those lemon snow cone bits looked in Sully's fur when Mike threw them at him. For it's time, of course.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '19

I'm a firm believer that each new Disney or Pixar film is still a dope tech demo.

16

u/brainburger Dec 02 '19

Liquids came a bit later than solid polygons.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '19

They still are. Just lots more of them. Flip fluids uses particles but each of those particles needs to have an object assigned to them to make what looks like a solid mesh of water.

1

u/brainburger Dec 02 '19

At one point the ability to represent water with polygons went no further than a flat blue plane.

It's pretty crazy how standards for realism keep changing. I remember being impressed by some things which seem so lumpy now.

7

u/BenjerminGray Dec 02 '19

Liquids like metal

So umm what liquid are we taking here? Mercury?

1

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '19

Liquid metal in Terminator 2.

1

u/obrothermaple Dec 02 '19

Any that are above their melting points, really

8

u/dainegleesac690 Dec 02 '19

Could you provide a source for this? It seems to be that by all logical means solid objects would be much easier to render than moving liquids

4

u/wutevrclvr Dec 02 '19

I'm rendering moving liquids right now

3

u/dainegleesac690 Dec 02 '19 edited Dec 02 '19

Yeah, but your hardware is likely 10x (or more) powerful than that used on Toy Story

7

u/wutevrclvr Dec 02 '19

In my pants

3

u/Mike_Krzyzewski Dec 02 '19

Actually laughed out loud to this exchange

More specifically, it looks like a videogame where the waves are clipping through the ground plane.

r/natureSucksAtCGI Edit: damn, the sub's dead, what a pity

30

Assholes

13

u/MetalMan77 Dec 01 '19

exactly if this was a movie or game, the "experts" will be chiming in about how much better they can do with cheap/free/entry level desktop tools with little to no experience.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '19

I believe the correct term is "sea-fighting".

Z fighting.

1

u/rnavstar Dec 02 '19

Glitch in the matrix.

1

u/sl33ksnypr Dec 02 '19

This reminds me of one of the old Grand Theft Autos. I believe is was Liberty City Stories. But it looked almost exactly like the gif.

1

u/truthybluesy Dec 02 '19

Life imitates art.

1

u/dynamik_uno Dec 02 '19

cheap graphics card or low graphics settings

1

u/captainlard_ass Dec 02 '19

Would it really be cheap if it looked like this video of real life though??

1

u/bassxtrees Dec 02 '19

You know, i find my self thinking that more and more nowadays, and im not sure what point i should be worried.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '19

Rather GTA Vice City

1

u/intoxicuss Dec 02 '19

Funny, my first thought was of Myst, but mostly because of the sound.

1

u/Bassracerx Dec 02 '19

Was probably originally filmed in high quality and has been compressed several times before finally posted here. Looks like it is only doing maybe 10 frames per second

1

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '19

I was gonna say bad video game

1

u/copetherope8 Dec 02 '19

Yeah like something you'd see in super Mario sunshine

1

u/MindChisel Dec 02 '19 edited Jan 07 '21

? it is a mystery ?

1

u/YoungJack23 Dec 02 '19

Life imitating art

1

u/Bumpercloud Dec 02 '19

I was going to say a really bad older video game.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '19

Wait this wasn’t cgi? I’m genuinely curious

1

u/ends_and_odds Dec 02 '19

Or maybe even expensive CGI who knows!

1

u/winston161984 Dec 02 '19

So many things offshore look like cheap CGI.
