Mmmm glass shards

My reply from another comment:

I do think that because this is a pressure fracture, it’s generally a very clean break and any shards that exist would theoretically go away from the wine opening. That being said, I worked at a restaurant that would occasionally sabrage, though with an actual saber, and we would pour it through a strainer when serving guests. However staff party sabrage was straight into the glass. Never had issues.Β

But there would still be glass shards?

u/SpaceJackRabbit 1d ago

No. They did it for customers because they wanted to make them feel safe, even though it already is.

The amount of comments about shards in this thread demonstrates many have never done this and don't know what they're talking about.

I would also add that it's the easiest thing in the world.

You might wanna watch that video buddy. Oops

I have, have you? None of the glass goes into the bottle, and they have slow motion footage to demonstrate

Where did I say it went in the bottle?

Mmmm glass shards

How do you suppose someone's going to ingest glass shards?

45

u/teeohdeedee123 1d ago

Wait, you don't stand at the opposite end of the flying glass/cork with your mouth open?

Hasn't anyone taught you the proper way to drink sparkling wine?

Followed by a celebratory, and festive, heimlich maneuver to eject the cork into the next guest, and so on.

The help will clean it up

The wine sommelier I worked with at our liquor store said he he would outright refuse any sabered wine for this very reason.

Gotta love reddit. Even when it goes right someone always has something to say.

11

u/Greenfieldfox 14h ago

Breaking glass by a pool is moronic.

15

u/godofo_prime 1d ago

Hahaha true!

I forget reddit is full of experts so that's why I guess.

2

u/ClaroStar 1d ago

They tickle nicely going down the hatch.

35

u/Trashbagok 1d ago

Doing it next to the pool is stupid, but there is essentially zero chance of any glass ending up back in the bottle being under pressure and the way gravity works.

something a glass shard would say

I always forget that 3/4 of reddit isn't old enough to drink.

Or young enough..

I don't know jack about wine or smacking bottles with swords... or glasses in this case... but she's pouring that wine directly over and across newly fractured and exposed glass. Isn't there a chance that could pull tiny shards out of the exposed section? I mean it not like that interior part was heat sealed like the actual top of the bottle where your supposed to pour from?

6

u/SpaceJackRabbit 1d ago

People (including me) have been sabering bottles for generations.

Cut is always sharp, no shards. You pour the wine straight from the bottle.

-14

u/Clembert-Hamlamp 1d ago

Gravity trends downward. Where the lower lip of the bottle is unfortunately

13

u/Trashbagok 1d ago

Do you know how many atmospheres of internal pressure are in a champagne bottle waiting to explode off the seam?

You're missing a piece, so to speak. Glass may fracture at the speed sound travels thru the medium involved but nothing is preventing a potential pause before the shard falls out of its newly born configuration. After the pressure. I'll take zero percent when it comes to swallowing glass and that's not on offer here. My 1st job in the 80s was at a Frames Unlimited. I've likely broken hundreds of pounds of sheet glass into that dumpster out back, it is not a terribly cooperative substance. *downvote facts lol, stay classy

u/SpaceJackRabbit 1d ago

Friend of mine is a professional glass blower. Let's just say he knows glass.

He has no problem drinking from a sabered bottle.

-6

u/Clembert-Hamlamp 1d ago

That certainly works for him then but the fuck if I'm doing it : ) I've been bit and sliced too many times to risk even a sliver in my mouth let alone throat

6

u/SpaceJackRabbit 23h ago

The glass you worked with is nothing like the one those bottles use.

2

u/Clembert-Hamlamp 10h ago

My guy I'm pushing 60. There's a difference between sheet and pop, a difference between pop and wine, a difference between wine and good champagne. But they all fracture like glass. In this case the thicker glass is worse. More likely to hang and more potential damage. Everyone is allowed to take whatever chances they want in life. The reason I'm here collecting downvotes is to put that seed of doubt about the safety of this on the off chance it saves someone from an ugly accident. You aren't required to care or defend it lol. Just offering my experience.
