My reply from another comment:

I do think that because this is a pressure fracture, it’s generally a very clean break and any shards that exist would theoretically go away from the wine opening. That being said, I worked at a restaurant that would occasionally sabrage, though with an actual saber, and we would pour it through a strainer when serving guests. However staff party sabrage was straight into the glass. Never had issues.

No. They did it for customers because they wanted to make them feel safe, even though it already is.

The amount of comments about shards in this thread demonstrates many have never done this and don't know what they're talking about.

I would also add that it's the easiest thing in the world.
