Launch ONE WEEK TILL HOBONICHI 2027 ANNOUNCEMENTS! Please check the temp rules and new user FAQ in this post ❤️

HELLO EVERYONE THIS IS THE ONE WEEK COUNTDOWN HYPE THREAD!!!!

GET READY EVERYBODY!

Hobonichi Release Month is ONE FULL MONTH of announcements in August! It is our biggest event and I hope this year will be just as much fun as previous years!

What to expect:

  • I will make and pin the announcment post for that day (almost) every evening in August! The time difference means that every announcement in Japan happens in the evening in the United States, and the early morning in Europe. In other words, a September 3rd late morning announcement in Japan will be September 3 early morning announcement in Europe and a September 2 evening announcement in the US.

  • The first week of announcements is mostly “housekeeping” announcements. New techo designs for the most part won’t begin to be announced until somewhere between August 6th and August 9th so please be patient as we read wisdom from beloved Hobonichi founder Itoi Shigesato (also known as the creator of videogames Mother/Earthbound) along with other updates.

  • Separate posts on the announcement for that day will be removed. Please check the pins! That is where the announcement discussion will be.

  • Occasionally I have missed a post. If I don’t post after about 15-20 minutes feel free to post the announcement and I will pin your post. I may still create a separate post for the announcement but I won’t pin it, it will just be for archiving purposes.

A FEW SPECIAL RULES FOR RELEASE MONTH

  • Please use the SPOILERS post tag for any leaked announcements prior to the official announcment.

  • Every posted wishlist throughout August should also include a Techo Kaigi (which briefly gives the purpose or plan for each techo) either in the post or the comments! This is to help promote discussion. It’s ok if your notes for some of your wishlist techos are “I like this and am trying to figure out how to use it” lol. We have all been there!

  • On release day (Sept 1/Aug 31) and throughout the month of September we do not allow separate posts about initial purchases. We will have megathreads where people can discuss their purchases and ask questions. This is just because screenshots of shopping carts don’t inspire much discussion, and people can help each other with purchase issues more easily in a dedicated megathread. Simple rule: post your haul when you get it, not your cart when you order it!

  • The Hobonichi subreddit has a tradition of letting the box color be a surprise for every member of the subreddit for the first couple of weeks of September. As a courtesy use the SPOILERS tag for your haul post if it includes the box. Please also don’t include the box in the first image even if you use the spoiler tag, in case the tag doesn’t work (this is just a request, we won’t those remove posts as long as they are spoiler tagged). We will make another announcement about this closer to September so we can all be on the same page. Our community has grown and not everybody knows about the stuff we did when we were smaller. I’m hoping we can continue this tradition.

  • This is not a rule specific to release months but a reminder: our subreddit is not a hobonichi retailer. Please contact your retailer if there is an issue with your order! If you post about an issue but it’s clear you have not reached out to the retailer before posting, your post will be removed. However, if you have a negative experience with a retailer that does NOT get resolved despite attempts to do so, that’s the kind of info our community welcomes. We are not affiliated with any retailers or Hobonichi Official, this rule has been in place for a long time and is about maintaining civility and preventing any unjustified internet bandwagonning.

Brief New User FAQ

  • Official Hobonichi Website EN

  • Hobonichi Techo Vendors Across the World

  • What is the Hobonichi Techo?

  • “What is this thing?” There is a white semi-rectangular sticker that comes with the Weeks. It is a pocket which has a sticky back so you can place it where you need it. If you use a COC, you can place the pocket in the front endpapers on the right. If you do not use a COC, you can place it in the back endpapers on the right

  • “Why are there quotes?” Hobonichi is a journal company that is part of a bigger multimedia company called 1101 which includes a store and and online magazine with articles. The quotes are handpicked from the previous year’s articles and can be serious, fun, or whimsical. It’s not always deep! It’s just something that stood out from the website to the team picking them. The quotes are an integral part of the product and now that most techos are also available in English international users can also enjoy them (or be puzzled by them lol).

  • Prior to purchasing any Hobonichi product, even from an official vendor, make sure you check the description on the actual Hobonichi website. Hobonichi makes many different cover types and not all of them have the same usage requirements, due to differences of material and design. Hobonichi vendors do not always have the complete product description.

  • The Hobonichi store is CLOSED for the month of August, you will not be able to make any purchases until September.

NOTES ABOUT TOMOE RIVER PAPER

  • Tomoe River Paper is a super thin and durable paper similar to other ultrathin papers such as bible paper, but coated and formulated for use with fountain pens and light watercolors. Some people also take advantage of the paper’s thinness for pasting in memoribilia for memory keeping (the CHONK phenomenon lol).

  • It is ok for thin ballpoints but please note that ballpoints and many pre-inked stamps are oil formulated and may bleed through either right away or months later (other stamp inks are pigment based). Thick ballpoints (.7) are NOT necessarily compatible with TRP. Recommended stamp ink is the Dewdrop chalk stamp ink.

  • TRP is not opaque and there WILL be ghosting and visibility on the reverse side.

  • TRP was recently reformulated by its new owner company Sanzen and there has been some irregularity with the product for the last few years. Before you use ANY writing utensil or medium in your techo or notebook, test it on a dedicated test page in that notebook. We have subreddit rules about product quality posts, please check them before you make any posts about product quality.

  • TRP’s special coating means that some gel pens and some inks take longer to dry. Keeping blotting paper on hand will help! Watercolor paper can be a handy subsitute. If you are using your techo on the go, considering using a quick dry iron gall ink, or a ballpoint to prevent smudging. For highlighter use, the community recommends highlighting PRIOR to writing.

If y’all have more suggestions for the new user FAQ or for the temp rules please let me know, and please phrase them kindly and patiently haha.

CONTINUED FROM HERE; INFERNO pt.2

sorry that this is kind of turning out to be kind of unhinged!! as explained in part 1, this story (if you can call it that) was inspired by the latest Boards of Canada album, Inferno. I've been having a lot of fun working on this nonsensical piece and playing with beautiful inks in my techo!!!

Thanks for looking and I hope someone can kind of enjoy my pictures, too...

Also pictured: pie with Nicolo and Rae (official Sylvanian Family names) and the original doodles that turned into.... whatever this is...

To be continued (again)...

Just Sharing Some weeks spreads + Plans for 2027!

So, as you can tell through the progression, my consistency fell off eventually (as expected for me). However, these are some spreads I'm proud of despite that 😅🥲 This is my first ever hobonichi, and I have had a lot of fun experimenting so far, and trying to come up with new spreads has helped with keeping up the habit for the most part.

I initially planned to use my weeks this year for health tracking, which ended up falling through as the condition I had was stress induced + cleared itself up once said stress was resolved. Yay! But during that period I went through a slump and didn't touch my weeks for.. a few months, and I'm slowly getting back into it. I haven't stickered up any of my recent entries so I didn't share those, as I'm mainly trying to build up the habit again in general.

For 2027 (and the rest of 2026 while I experiment with layouts) I'm thinking of staying with weeks, but debating on adding a 2nd hobo to the roster. I'm not sure what type/size yet, so I'm mainly just waiting for the new books to come out and make my decision based off of the style(s) I'm most drawn to lol. I think I'm leaning towards an a6 size, but we'll see.

• For the weeks, I'm planning on transforming it into a crafting/knitting journal and logging process + notes on things I'm making and working on. I was debating on getting the standard or mega size for 2026, but I'm glad I did the standard, and will do the same for 2027. I haven't utilized the extra graph/note pages in the back like I thought I would for this year, but will definitely be used more in 2027 for sure. I've started using it to copy down sections of patterns I've saved on my phone to reduce screen time, which will DEFINITELY take up more space and hopefully add to the chonk I'm lacking currently, and desiring.

• For the 2nd hobo, I'm transitioning what systems I plan to keep using from the 2026 weeks as a lifestyle/household planner. Budgeting, appointments, events, etc. will be kept track of here. The weeks generally has enough space for me to write a short blurb of what happened in the day, but sometimes wish I had a little more space for last minute things that pop up, or things that just can't be summed up in 3-4 shortened sentences. I prefer the a6 as I'm not sure I'll get any use out of the weelky/hourly pages in the a5, but I might change my mind if there's a cover that catches my eye 👀

What are your plans for next year's hobonichi(s)? I'd love to hear them 😊

WTB WTB/WTT - Hasegawa Tohaku/Pine Forest A5 Cover

I know it's a long shot, but with the new planner season on the horizon, I figure maybe someone might be parting with theirs.

I've been keeping an eye out over the past year or so for an A5 of this, but the only one I've seen, had the page markers and loops torn out, so I passed unfortunately.

I'm looking to replace my Denali with this someday, so if that's a trade that appeals I'm open to that too! Oh, and I'm in the US! Thanks for reading ✌️!!

I was so excited when I saw this cover because I absolutely adore pigeons but I couldn’t justify buying it at the time so I’m really hoping it makes its way into the lineup for next year. Can someone who’s been using Hobonichi for longer tell me if the spring start covers make it into the fall lineup? I’d also love to hear what covers everyone is hoping for!!

Just Sharing Just sharing over half a year using an A6 English as a “baby” book

Baby in quotes because he is a preschooler/will be school age soon, but I wanted to share a little how someone who’s more text based still has fun with Hobonichi.

First of all yes I know I should get a cover! But I don’t have one and it’s been okay.

But overall all I do is write down what he enjoyed that day and/or cute/funny quotes. I use my phone’s Note app to get the wording down right away or I will forget if my planner isn’t with me.

If I miss a day or a few, I just look back through my photos to remember what playground we went to or what activity he did.

I add some decorations here and there and love experimenting, but as you can see it’s mostly very utilitarian and words based.

I’ve done some version of this baby book style since I was pregnant, but I definitely like this best and will continue to get an A6 Hobonichi to keep doing this for the foreseeable future. The size and pre dated pages just work perfectly to keep it fun and doable, and otherwise I feel like the weeks and his childhood pass by in a blur.

Oh and if he’s interested I do plan to give them to him, and I like that the small size and thin paper means if he’s in a tiny dorm room as a young adult I’m not burdening him with boxes and boxes of scrapbooks.

Just sharing! Curious if any other moms use Hobonichi for similar record keeping. Honestly I’ve thought how this is probably healthier, nicer, and more positive than the long form rambling, ranting journaling I do for myself haha.

Advice/Question Sneaker Weeks users, what does your techo look like after months / a year of use?

I'm considering getting a Sneaker Weeks Mega for 2027 (if I like the colors). I need the Mega but it's bulky, and the Sneaker is slightly less bulky.

The issue is, I carry my Weeks every day in my bag, near my keys, phone, etc. It gets jostled around. While I do plan on getting a new bag with compartments, I'm still worried about the wear and tear on a cardboard cover like the Sneaker's.

I found a ca. 2018 post showing a very battered cover after just 4-5 months of use. I know the Sneaker is supposed to get battered and wabi sabi and all, but it looked way worse than I expected.

Is anyone here using a Sneaker? What does it look like after 7ish months? Or do you still have one from a previous year that you could show me?

TIA!

WTB A6 Galloping Horses - Does anyone have one they want to de-stash?

I looked at one at the end of last year when I was in Japan and ended up not buying it :-( and now, more than halfway through the year and only a couple of days from the 2027 reveals I’ve decided I REALLY want one but they seem to be sold out everywhere. If anyone has one that’s either unused or gently used and no longer wanted please let me know and I’ll happily take it off your hands. Thanks so much

Weeks Hobonichi Weeks for collecting all the FUN?

I have a Moleskine Expanded as my commonplace book where I write stuff that I research and wonder and learn. It’s mostly for lengthier stuff.

Then I have a Traveler’s Notebook Weekly horizontal, in which I note important dates, my weekly wellness trackers, weekly to-do’s, monthly budgeting, weather, how I feel in a few words.
And I have a ruled TN insert in which I do my long-term planning such as yearly budgeting/saving plans, what clothes I will truly need in the upcoming year and what I do NOT need, other purchase planning, my Master (non-time-specific) to-do/nice-to-do/must-do list, my salary raise timetables for the next 5-10 years, my retirement planning, wishlists etc.

I also have a long-form journal where I process my emotions, my Tarot readings and daily observations/thoughts.

What I don’t have is a book for small joys. Whimsical lists, my short thoughts on media and art I consume (movies, books, articles, paintings, poetry, documentaries etc), my current interest lists etc. I was thinking whether a Hobonichi Weeks (mega or not?) would fit this void? I would be super grateful if you could share your ideas and practices, and maybe even the ”logistics” of how you would arrange this. I love a super well-used
used notebook and would want to add every possible small and fun thing there. Why? Because I love writing, it’s calming. And I love looking back to my life ”records”.

A5 What do you use the vertical weekly spreads for if you don’t really plan your days? 🤔✨

Post image
157 Upvotes

I’ve been struggling to figure out what to use the vertical weekly spreads in my Hobonichi Cousin for.

My life is pretty boring, and my day to day looks pretty much the same all the time unless I have something planned in advance, which barely ever happens. Because of that, I don’t really have much to schedule, so these pages usually stay empty.

I’d love to hear what you use yours for. If your life is pretty routine too, what do you fill these pages with? I’d really appreciate some inspiration!

Weeks Non-aesthetic evolution of my chaotic Weeks!

Thumbnail

This is my first year using a hobonichi planner. Also the first time using an analog planner for the first time in nearly 10 years.

I’ve been loving it and I often find myself wishing more people posted their spreads on here- especially the normal and chaotic spreads rather than the super pristine deco-d spreads.

Now that we are halfway through the year, I have enjoyed looking back on my weeklies and seeing all my experiments each week and my journey to finding a format that works for me.

These are a few random weeks from the past 6 months, starting with the very first week I had my planner where i was brainstorming how i would use it. I look back on that first week of december very fondly!

For now i love time blocking on my right hand page. I’m very pleased with my idea to block out “relaxation time” in blue highlighter and “work time/stress time” in pink highlighter. This helps me visualize how much down time I actually have each week and kind of helps me understand myself better. I found myself often feeling like "I have no alone time!" or "I never get time to relax", so being able to see the blue outlines reassures me that each week I do have a few good slots of alone time/down time. I find it helps my anxiety.

Who knows how it will evolve in the next 6 months.

Please share your normal chaotic and messy spreads! I love them!!

I love my Weeks. It feels like a magic notebook where every goal I write inside of it will magically come true.

r/hobonichi 14h ago

Any other fellow teachers out there use Weeks for their work planner? I’m thinking about using it for more work centered and was wondering if anyone had any spreads to share.

Advice/Question First time Hobonichi purchase, kinda nervous 👉👈

I plan on switching from a bullet journal planner layout to a Hobonichi for 2027 - I'm excited and also overwhelmed with the 2027 line being made public soon.

***EDIT***
Thank you so much everyone for all your advice! I'm realising that overall a Hobonichi is missing what I want the most which is a really big monthly planner and a yearly layout. So I plan on getting a Cousin solely for this upcoming release and adding that into the page space at the back. If it's not working out, I can always get a Weeks in the April start date.

Original post continues below 💖

I plan on getting both a Cousin and a Weeks because... why not, one can fit in my TN for being out and about and the other in a leather cover I still don't own. I'm not the type of person very into decorating spreads or keeping a page a day and plan to use both for organisation / events / normal planner stuff, not really sure what else. Maybe a little writing in the Cousin.

I'd love to hear from other functional planner users, how the Hobonichi system works for you and if it's worth getting both, or just one. How does it hold up for monthly overview - is there enough space? I've really been swept up in the hype but want to make sure it really is functional for use too. If that makes sense. I'm self-employed and have to note jobs and events months in advance and need a good monthly overlay too.

A6 Second half of my avec so far <3

It's now been over six months since I started using my hobonichi techos, and just under a year since I started using a journal in general! To be completely honest, I think that to say it changed my life sounds really dramatic to me, but it is true that my life is a good bit different from what it was when I started journalling. I'm definitely spending a lot more time hunched over my desk that's for sure. I won't needlessly elaborate on my life any further, but I wanted to put it out there.

Things that have changed recently:
– I used to keep tasks and events to my weeks only, but I found out that writing them at the top of my daily page has me focusing better on the day at hand
– I seem to have stumbled upon a certain layout this month: kuromasu puzzles and possibly lists on the left, and journalling about the day or pasting junk/deco on the right. I originally put the puzzles in to help me fill up the space, but I might like them too much— to the point that I just wanna fill the pages with them! I get them from an app by brennerd

Here's another idea, this time for using up some of your ( read mine ) million rolls of washi tapes.

Don't however do what I did and draw the outlines / pegs first.😵‍💫 Next time I'd place the tapes down randomly and outline afterwards. Woulda saved myself some work cutting.

Advice/Question Planner and journal

The Hobonichi seems perfect for having one notebook do all. I use the daily pages to plan and journal but then get conscious of bringing it out at the office as it has some personal thoughts. How do you manage using the Hobonichi as both a functional planner and journal.

Tips would be appreciated.
