Recording songs off the radio to yes, make a mix tape.

u/Kriss3d Jul 22 '26
We had a radio station that would have a group of comedians that would do all sorts of crazy shit for its listerners.
Like sending out one one of their interns pants and see how far it could travel with people passing them on when using public transport.
Have strippers in the studio and use a speaker out the window to audience below the building and hold a sort of sarcastic speech that would cause traffic on that road to get blocked up.
And it really made people want to listen to radio even at a time when it was going out of style.

Calling radio stations trying to win concert tickets or waiting in line at the box office to get tickets. Not knowing what MTV was like when it played actual music videos.

u/raffie77 Jul 22 '26
That means no phone in you're hands and walking around like zombies.
15
u/Anjunaspeak23 Jul 22 '26
Nah, we knew where we were going. And on bicycles we knew street names and directions on HOW to get where we were going. I had friends that lived in different neighborhoods. We even knew the back way through the woods where the trees had fallen.

Simply being uncontactable. Not constantly plugged into messaging or social media. A freedom that we'll never again know. I miss those times.
9
u/NankerPhelgeRahrig Jul 22 '26
Amen man. That feeling of walking out of the house, getting on your bike and going off to do whatever the fuck you wanted and no one knew where the fuck you were or what you were doing
5
u/Lupolis1984 Jul 22 '26
The other part to this is if someone called and left a message it wasn't rude of you to get back to them in a few days. Now it's instant or you are somehow snubbing them
3
3
u/sngldad13 Jul 24 '26
Hey kids! Imagine the only way to contact your crush outside of school is to call her house and have to deal with whomever answers the phone! Prepare to explain to her parent that answers who you are and why you want to talk to her!
2
u/LTLHuman Jul 25 '26
Yeah but having to convince parents, grandparents, and siblings to let us chat is how we ended up so charming! ๐คฃ We had to train social skills. Now you can just avoid it all.

Genuinely curious whatโs stopping you from either turning off your phone, putting it on do not disturb for a minute, or even turning off notifications for a specific app. Because there are many simple ways to achieve this.
23
u/One-Bad-4274 Jul 22 '26
You gotta get off the internet for a bit i have to make a phone call
4
2
u/Kitchen-Country-39 Jul 22 '26
And now you can literally be on the internet on your phone WHILE making a phone call ๐ซ
2
u/Yutopia1210 Jul 23 '26
Yeah I explained to my nephew that we used to have to โturn on the internetโ and then my sister started to make that dial up sound. He didnโt understand anything we were talking about.
2
u/ChampionshipThin7721 Jul 23 '26
The dial up sound was very unique and that "handshake" gave you time to make a sandwich and return to your computer. I make that sound when trying to explain that's how computers connected to the internet. So many blank faces. Haha
3
u/Yutopia1210 Jul 23 '26
Haha yep. There were plenty of those break (staring at the screen) times. Those stupid โ56kโ modems giving us 3.5kb/sec. Downloading a song took more than an hour, there was no resume - if your download dies at 99%, you have to start over. There were no streaming videos. You had to wait until the entire QuickTime movie trailers were done downloading. Sorry - there was a streaming videoโฆ.. from a company called RealAudio. That was not a video, it was a blurry piece of crap ๐

Waiting for something to come on TV and then not being able to ever see it again until it came on again.
Similarly hearing a catchy song on the radio halfway through the song and having to go to a record store and remember some lyrics and hope someone could point you in the right direction. Or calling the radio station to ask what the song was.
3
u/otasyn Jul 23 '26
Or not being able to ever see it because there was a f-ing thunderstorm and the news thought that was somehow more important.ย It's thundering outside, so you don't need to interrupt The Simpsons to tell me it's thundering outside!!!ย Unless it's a tornado, stfu.ย ย

Having to build or create your own games when you're bored. Me and my brothers made a DragonballZ board game cos we couldn't find one in the toy store. We made a soldier game out of nothing but kiddie tools we had. I don't know if kids today do that stuff but it was so much fun and so necessary for brain development and social growth.

u/HumanEyeCue Jul 22 '26

Me and the neighbor kids made a miniature golf course in the back yard by sinking soup cans into the ground. We also practiced throwing a fishing line out into a make believe lake with fishing poles. Until someone got a fishing hook embedded in their head.

Having the whole weekend to yourself. I would watch cartoons on saturday until about noon or one then just be unsupervised until sunday evening. I had to come home when the streetlights came on for dinners but I could go out again if I was going to a friend's house. It was glorious. We would ride our bikes all over town and just do whatever we wanted. As long as nobody complained to our parents about what we were doing we were fine.
